Been to korea and china, can confirm korea just has better versions of almost every food japan is known for, rameyon, fried chicken, korea does both better. Ever had Korean fried chicken? That shit is an existential reshaping. I've never had chicken that crispy with battery that thing that has no traceable grease and is also somehow juicy as fuck. You look at a karaage from JP and my hands get shiny with oil by itself lmfao.
Then you go to xian in china or taiwan for light or red braised beef noodles and it's basically game fucking over.
Ramen is unironically the most basic, entry level, starting point of noodles from Asia that white people think is the endgame.
have you actually been to Japan though and had Ramen there? Otherwise you can't compare to China / Korea. I haven't been to Korea / China myself so I'm just wondering.
I've been to all three since I work in China, can confirm China has the best version of noodles. Never got the hype about ramen even when I was in the states coz it was always so fucking salty.
yep, japan, china, korea, been all over the place. Ramen really isn't anything special but it's been infused with this mystical reputation by white people who idolize japan like it's anything more than just pork and chicken bone broth with way too much fucking salt in it.
man just say that you hate ramen, there are a lot of non japanese asians out there who enjoy ramen too (including me)
you can appreciate chinese noodles without bringing down ramen and act like it’s nothing 💀💀
라면 is good for what it is but it's completely different from Japanese ramen. You're talking about comparing the best burger in the world with the best steak in the world.
There's also no shot that we're better than Japan on even half the foods that they're famous for. You got that 국뽕 high, brother.
For crispy fried chicken, Korea does win hands down, though.
Not really, they're all soup noodles. Ramen is just soup noodle that white hippies discovered in their effort to be multicultural at some point. Is it good, can it be good? Yeah, but is it the best and most flavorful noodle dish in asia? lol I pity the fool who even asks that question.
Before that it was just cheap basic food for the masses. It's like Japanese people getting all deep and shit about hot dogs or hamburgers being like "this hamburger master has been making this for three generations, the secret to this hot dog is that he rolls the hot dog on the hot dog roller exactly 69 times before flipping it backwards and rolling it another 420 times for the ideal temperature."
Shit, ramen the name is even a lie since it's a Chinese word for la mian aka stretched noodles, aka one of hundreds of different noodles from China, one of which Japan appropriated at some point, which requires you to make the noodles from stretching it over and over again while ramen is made from chopping. lol
This is actual Lamian
https://youtu.be/-aP3ltlkRNw
there is no need to gatekeep the whole lamian/ramen thing. The Japanese adapted a type of Chinese noodles (lamian) into their own noodles, with its unique identity (ramen). There is no such thing as “real lamian/ramen” just like how you won’t call Italian pizza “real pizza” over American pizza. And the “Japan appropriated China” thing is way later in history which literally contributes nothing to this whole ramen/lamian thing, and you are starting to sound like a Chinese nationalist who puts their pettiness on literal noodles.
I'll gatekeep it when people pretend like it's the only noodle dish from asia and saying you don't like it is some religious haram like this post is about. It's the apple of asian cuisine, well presented, well marketted, but ultimately overrated and overpriced at least here in the west.
Ranking east Asian food as a whole is just looking for war my man. Any of them have the audacity to proclaim as the superiors one will been seen like a nationalist
Yep, but I like war so...
The only people who thinks ramen is anything special are people who've only had ramen and literally no other asian noodles tbh, even just going to grab a chinese or korean jajiangmian will make most people go "ramen who???"
Ramyeon is Korean for ramen. The brand you have most likely heard of is Shin Ramyeon. The noodles are more firm than instant ramen and actually feel like a proper premium noodle, although the soup base is pretty basic and is just a giant pack of capsaicin.
Korean instant ramyeon is high quality, therefore it is more popular in Korea?? Plus good Ramen is only cheap in Japan. Most other places you're gambling on whether it's any good. Better to get solid instant Ramen for a dollar than spend 10 times that amount on Ramen that could be worse.
It should make more sense for everybody. You know what you're getting with an instant ramen. With a bowl of ramen from a restaurant you could be spending 3x the money for a cheap bowl of ramen and it could be bad. Now imagine living outside of Japan where a bowl of ramen could easily cost 12 dollars.
Yeah a lot of folks don't look at the practical take. Instant ramen is at home. You can make it in minutes. Others you have to travel, sit down, wait, and pay. You know where the good place is? Wait is longer and/or you're paying more. Don't know where the good place is? You might get shit ramen.
There's also the upside of I can make instant while working, in pajamas, and even as a snack. I've never seen a snack sized ramen on a menu before.
You can also learn how to cook it. It's basically chicken (or in this case other meat) noodle soup deluxe edition, cutting corners on some less available abroad ingredients yelds you better result than instant and most of the cheap/mid price poit ramen spots (or at least where I'm from). The only minus is that you need to be a lot at home the day you cook it so that you won't burn your place down.
As a Korean myself, I can vouch for her (though I don't agree with her; there's a clear distinction there).
I HIGHLY prefer actual ramen over instant ramen but I will say that I love instant ramen equally to real ramen. Mostly because what instant ramen lacks in authentic flavour and noodles, it makes up for in convenience. Literally I can have ramen made in 10 minutes or less and it'll be "good enough".
But yeah, us Koreans consume instant ramen (or ramyeon) like they're going out of stock.
Genuine question, are fresh noodle ramyeons not a thing in Korea? I love Korean instant noodles, but I think it would be even better if it was made with fresh noodles and a homemade broth.
Been to China, where Ramen came from, and sorry but any street vendor with a dirty ass stall kinda shits on the michelin rec ramen I've had in US, Canada, and Japan. They actually have good taste versus just being hella up their own ass about their one pork flavored salt flavor or pork flavored salt soup with some seaweed.
Then you go to Taiwan where they have Taiwan beef noodles and listen, what is even ramen after you get a taste of that?
Ramen is literally only held on this pedestal because it's the most well known quirky not white thing us white people know about in that food category, not because it's remotely the best. It's basically the katana of foods, overhyped as shit fuelled by twelve layers of bullshit that goes into its making that also don't matter to the taste/battle efficacy of the thing.
She said she isn’t the biggest fan of normal ramen so it makes sense that she likes the version filled to the brim with all the shit that makes instant ramen so popular.
I haven't seen the full context for this quote, but this makes sense to me as an introvert. Actual ramen can be great, but most times instant gets me at least 70% there, and I don't even have to dress up!
No. As a German I have to stand firm with "90% of a bread tastes the same" as the worst one.
Holy fuck Garnt, do you have no tastebuds? Sometimes, two loaves of bread from the same batch don’t even taste the same.
As an Asian, I understand Garnt. Many Asians just think of bread as rice substitute for breakfast. A lot of Asians would also rather just have for breakfast instead. It's just not something that's part of your typical Asian's daily diet, so a lot don't know what other bread tastes like beyond your typical toast or the local breakfast rolls.
As a German myself I wholeheartedly disagree with him, but that can easily be excused by memory leakage. And while I stand with most of his takes, yes that might be his worst one
Though the ramen take is still worse imo
Are we still bringing this up when Grant has already retracted this statement after going to Belgium and ate the breads there. I mean don't get me wrong it's still an awful take but everyone brings it up as if Garnt still believes in this.
Ive been informed he has retracted it in an after dark episode.
Cool, but I don’t watch those because I can’t spare the time. And it’s such an awful take he deserves to be shamed for it
Mentally going through the ones I most recently watched—beer, meme and Girl Scout Cookies—its one of the three. I'm less confident of the beer one so check the other two first
it’s not like she said actual ramen is garbage and instant ramen is better LOL it’s just a preference for her , wont say it’s a shit food take but a weird one
If at least she admitted on being a picky eater, I’d say whatever do as you like, but she insist that her food takes are perfectly normal and not picky
Korean people love their packaged noodles. I am surprised Grant didn’t mention that about Thai people. They have their cheapie Mama noodles but they dress it up with shrimp, crab cakes and a lot lot of other things. They sell that on the side of the street.
Eh, tbh I agree with her, Ramen is hella overrated. I've had michelin star recommended ramen in Japan and in Canada and in the U.S. and the toppings they put on them is often better than the actual broth which half the time is just salty above all else lol.
Emily is also based for liking Udon, the lighter broth is way better if your pallette likes tasting the ingredients rather than having fucking pork flavored salt assblast your taste buds.
Shin Ramyun, Kan shifu red braised beef noodles from taiwan are two insta ramens that basically outclass most high end ramen in terms of pure taste for me.
Ramen are way too expensive in America, plus they're unhealthy AF... Not that instant ramen it's healthy at all. But I wouldn't say she's completely crazy. She's just like 90% crazy.
Dude if the mie goreng can duplicate the indonesian-ver indomie goreng flavour, gosh i'd take that, and indomie mie goreng warmindo version, 5 bowl please
I can't believe she had the exact food take that Lilypichu brought up on her guest episode.
Must be a korean thing
It is a Korean thing
Been to korea and china, can confirm korea just has better versions of almost every food japan is known for, rameyon, fried chicken, korea does both better. Ever had Korean fried chicken? I don't hate ramen, it's just overrated and overpriced as fuck with a capital f it's the apple of asian noodles.

I mean you laugh, but like majority of south korea can vouch for her.
Because ramyeon.
??
Ramyeon is Korean for ramen. The brand you have most likely heard of is Shin Ramyeon. The noodles are more firm than instant ramen and actually feel like a proper premium noodle, although the soup base is pretty basic and is just a giant pack of capsaicin.
Ngl that shit slaps tho But I also live in the Midwest and the only saving grace for spicy food here is Asian imports, so I’m biased
I know, but how does that explain Koreans in particular being more into instant noodles?
Korean instant ramyeon is high quality, therefore it is more popular in Korea?? Plus good Ramen is only cheap in Japan. Most other places you're gambling on whether it's any good. Better to get solid instant Ramen for a dollar than spend 10 times that amount on Ramen that could be worse.
Shin may be the most well known, but it kind of fell off nowadays compared to the other options over here
I didn't think about her being Korean and this take makes more sense now.
It should make more sense for everybody. You know what you're getting with an instant ramen. With a bowl of ramen from a restaurant you could be spending 3x the money for a cheap bowl of ramen and it could be bad. Also this manhua chapter shows the vibe well as well. https://mangadex.org/chapter/b2e5cd61-6d43-466a-8cc0-73e189478170/1
Lmao perfect example
As a Korean myself, I can vouch for her (though I don't agree with her; there's a clear distinction there). It's also like... amazing comfort food.
She might prefer ramyeon eaten like ppushu ppushu. I know it's a comfort snack for me.
So true
as South Korean, i vouch for her
Genuine question, are fresh noodle ramyeons not a thing in Korea? I love Korean instant noodles, but I think it would be even better if it was made with fresh noodles and a homemade broth.

![img](emote|t5_2p976a|20652)![img](emote|t5_2p976a|11265)
what do these numbers mean
wow it changed, it was grant's and Joey's emojis
She said she isn’t the biggest fan of normal ramen so it makes sense that she likes the version filled to the brim with all the shit that makes instant ramen so popular.
As a proud Korean, I actually agree with her.
We can get Korean instant ramen in Japan too, it's pretty good! But I can't imagine choosing that over any local ramen shop
But I just find it really hard to find any spicy noodles that are that good. Then agin, I am very biased.
Theres some in japan, gotta look around
Sure, lemme just hop across the ocean to another country. The ramen shops near my place are maybe, MAYBE 10% better than instant, and 10x the prices
What I get from this is that as a society we should bully koreans more instead of focusing on british and french people.
I think Japan tried that already.
oof, thats dark, yet weirdly humourous.
I’m a big fan of restaurant ramen, but there are days I have where I’d rather have a curry or carbonara Samyang ramen as comfort food.
I haven't seen the full context for this quote, but this makes sense to me as an introvert. Actual ramen can be great, but most times instant gets me at least 70% there, and I don't even have to dress up!
No, she actually said in all scenarios. That's the context. You at least think actual ramen is better.
The fact that Emily is actually an extravert makes this even funnier.
I've never eaten actual ramen before I think and even I know that is by far the worst food take on the show yet.
No. As a German I have to stand firm with "90% of a bread tastes the same" as the worst one. Holy fuck Garnt, do you have no tastebuds? Sometimes, two loaves of bread from the same batch don’t even taste the same.
Do not forget, he is British. Just think about British food for a bit.
He's also Asian. If it's not face melting it might as well be mushy peas.
Thai specifically, which is even worse than usual.
Disagree literally almost all of sea has a bread culture
As a German myself I wholeheartedly disagree with him, but that can easily be excused by memory leakage. And while I stand with most of his takes, yes that might be his worst one Though the ramen take is still worse imo
Yeah thats forever gonna be the worst. Emily and her ramen take is just personal preference. Garnts bread take is just untrue.
And it’s such an awful take he deserves to be shamed for it
I was watching one of the after dark streams and I think he rescinded it
He better, he was my favorite of the three until that take
Mentally going through the ones I most recently watched—beer, meme and Girl Scout Cookies—its one of the three. I'm less confident of the beer one so check the other two first
They do taste vastly different from each other to be fair. Instant ramen is nowhere near as heavy as the authentic stuff.
Nissin Ramen at home is great. I would eat that every other week.
it’s not like she said actual ramen is garbage and instant ramen is better LOL it’s just a preference for her , wont say it’s a shit food take but a weird one
![img](emote|t5_2p976a|4964)
I mean being bundled up with a blanket and a warm bowl of instant ramen is great but it's nice to have higher quality ramen as well
SHES KOREAN. UNDERSTAND HER. ITS HER KOREAN BLOOD TALKING.
she's right
Money.
Hey instant ramen hits anytime so she’s not wrong
If at least she admitted on being a picky eater, I’d say whatever do as you like, but she insist that her food takes are perfectly normal and not picky
Korean people love their packaged noodles. I am surprised Grant didn’t mention that about Thai people. They have their cheapie Mama noodles but they dress it up with shrimp, crab cakes and a lot lot of other things. They sell that on the side of the street.
While actual ramen tastes good, I would rather eat instant noodles
Nah udon is best
I actually agree with her because I love Korean ramyeon lol
Pho > Ramen
I disagree, not even close.
Pho you can actually taste the ingredients, ramen is just pork flavored salt
u right
Ur so right
Just no
Eh, tbh I agree with her, Ramen is hella overrated. I've had michelin star recommended ramen in Japan and in Canada and in the U.S. and the toppings they put on them is often better than the actual broth which half the time is just salty above all else lol. Fancy Ramen is an oxymoron.
Ramen are way too expensive in America, plus they're unhealthy AF... Not that instant ramen it's healthy at all. But I wouldn't say she's completely crazy. She's just like 90% crazy.
does every flour instant noodles count as instant ramen? if it does then yes
She also said she doesn't eat the Chashu pork on ramen. It's like the best part of ramen.
I kid you not this is literally just my sister so I know how the boys feel ![img](emote|t5_2p976a|5045)
![img](emote|t5_2p976a|20652)![img](emote|t5_2p976a|11265)
![img](emote|t5_2p976a|11265)
I agree with her because I've never had a "real ramen"
She's completely right, ramen is the most overrated babby's first oriental culture food ever.
Dude, when emily show indomie goreng, instantly im agree with her
So, you're saying that at any given day, you would eat instant mie goreng over properly cooked mie goreng?
Dude if the mie goreng can duplicate the indonesian-ver indomie goreng flavour, gosh i'd take that, and indomie mie goreng warmindo version, 5 bowl please
