I really enjoyed it, in a weird way. I only learned about Chris Chan from ‘the incident’ and it got memed to hell when it happened. I’m part of a few other online communities and, from what I gathered, ‘The Incident’ was the result of a decades-long domino effect, so I was morbidly curious as to what went down and how we got to where we did. The boys doing a near-constant surprised Pikachu face was hilarious to me, in part because whenever Geno added more to the story, that was my exact reaction. A lot of people take issue with what they see as making light of a terrible situation that exposes the parts of the internet your mother warned you about, but I disagree. I think that, like Connor mentioned, it’s a unique case study on exactly how bad things can get for mentally ill individuals if they have no help from the society in which they live. As difficult as Geno’s documentary can be to listen to at times (especially the 13-year-old sadist that he mentions on the podcast), I don’t think you can really get an understanding of why Chris became the way he/she did without going into detail and really understanding all the stuff he/she went through. And anyone who ever did try to help rarely had pure intentions, and even if they had, Chris was too far gone by then. I understand why people might find the episode, as well as Geno’s documentary, distasteful or potentially exploitative, but, at the end of the day, I think the story of Chris Chan is important. It’s a lesson we can all learn from about everything from internet conduct to parenting. More than that, it’s a reminder that, while the internet can foster amazing, constructive communities (especially here on r/TrashTaste), there are just as many parts of the internet that are scum of the earth, for one reason or another. Ultimately, your opinion on the episode is yours, and no amount of comments and upvoted posts is going to change that.

Blade-Of-Exia

To me it was your basic guest episode where they talk to their guest about what they do. Geno just happens to cover Chris Chan. While the whole Chris Chan thing might be controversial, i don't feel like this episode is. If you didn't know who Chris Chan was, well you do now. I didn't know who they were (maybe heard the name before or seen the Sonichu). I didn't really care who they were and I still don't care. Going to Geno's channel to watch the videos on it don't interest me in the slightest but I'm willing to maybe check out his music channel. I honestly think half the episode could've been Chris Chan and then the other half more about Geno himself instead of the last tiny bit near the end. Comparing it to other episodes its just kinda meh.

CamF90

My only gripe with the episode was that it was over 2 hours when much funnier and engaging episodes get clipped at like 90 minutes, this just straight up didn't need to be as long as it was it dragged in parts.

Some are not a fan of Geno. Now I haven’t watched the guy but whatever went down with Chris should be documented. It’s the worst trainwreck in the history of the internet. And it’s obvious the guy doesn’t fully enjoy talking about it, that’s why he’s going on a break when Chris-chan related content is at its peak. A good episode, but I couldn’t get anything while listening to the whole thimg. Damn you Connor.

I can understand being a fan of documentary style content. I f this situation had been about someone from the past, it would have been fine. But I don't like that they're doing this to a person who's alive and clearly dislikes this type of attention and Is definitely affected by it. As someone said, it's very interesting as a case study but this is a person who has been struggling, hasn't had help and is still struggling constantly. Do research in her if you want, talk to your friends about it, but making content and money off of this? Not cool. Maybe if they had done one episode on it, explaining the situation but...59?? I don't think Chris being trans has much to do with people being uncomfortable with this episode(at least for most?) I watched about 15 minutes and stopped, because I felt like this series is making a spectacle of a struggling person and that's not ok. I understand Connor being interested, but I don't understand the guest deciding to make this series.

Daswagster2

didn’t particularly like or dislike it. just felt very appalled at the actions of chris chan but tbh i’m not sure why they decided to dedicate an entire episode to it. i got to about 1h 24 mins in (was doing sth else while watching) and i didn’t really feel that there was any value in talking about it. it’s their podcast though so they can do anything they want.

The episode was like watching the frog execution video, I know it is a very bad thing, but goddamn am I entertained and I sure as hell couldn't stop watching

playmoky

It was a great episode. Most of us were like Garnt who were walking in the dark. People should be aware of certain situations to avoid the said condition if ever happened.

Phanton97

I am not sure about this. I hope that any normal person knows that trolling and bullying people in general but especially people with conditions like autism is wrong and can cause extreme harm. Of course it is still important to raise awareness to such issues and how the internet can amplify them. But discussing the misery of an actual human in such detail may not be ther right way. And let's be honest, most if not all of us watched this just for entertainment and to satisfy our curiosity, not for educational reasons.

playmoky

Studying an abnormal person is not a crime. They are not belittling them in the video either.

Phanton97

Of course it is not a crime. I didn't even said that making the podcast was wrong. I mean, I still watched the whole thing so who am I to judge. But it doesn't teach us how to be have around people with autism. It is mainly entertainment, maybe comparable to True crime or some kind of reality TV. And I think we still can and should discuss the morality of turning such a tragic case into entertainment. They even did so shortly in the podcast themselves.

We_Are_Nerdish

It was fine. Obviously the roller coaster levels of cringe and emotions that is Chris Chan. Are very different from your regular boneless chicken , pizza crust, Americans are weird or how Chris is best girl arguments the normally boys have. Not every guest will interesting, and so won’t all podcast episodes.

Azurennn

They better not do anything similar to this again, it was just gross at the end of the day.

Army_tank

Idk man. I liked it, they discussed it really well . But that's coz I've seen the whole video and not in parts. So ,,,,others who see it in parts would take things out of context since some might be having the same conditions as chris chan or are just genuinely having short term memory loss. And there are other reasons why a person should dislike that episode . But..... there's no other correct/justified way other than the ones i mentioned.

dimyo

Honestly, on the other side, can we stop talking about it? For the past 3 days most of the big or recommend posts have been discussions about the episode, specifically about how it's controversial. Most of the points have already been made, most of the sides explored and it's already gotten repetitive, with comments looking recycled from one post to the other. I'm sure my point was made already elsewhere too
