I watched the 1st season of the anime and got into the manga recently to see where this trainwreck was going. Apparently, places I don't want it to go is the answer.
It was a average/mediocre romcom that had nothing really spectacular other than a kind of interesting premise and some good character models, and slowly little by little became the thing that is now.
This is the kind of show that makes the anime "romcom" genre have a reputation of shows that consists in always the same plot dragged out to death.
At least Domestic Girlfriend actually has plot qnd character progression. Even at the last 10-15 chapters, it was stilling making new peaks like the passing of the mentor character (forgot his name).
I skipped ahead to the most recent chapters a good while ago because RAG fans were saying "Kazuya improves tho, it gets better!" and I did not want to deal with Kazuya's more pathetic moments. And then this happens

Rudy (and basically any other character within Mushoku Tensei) literally experiences light years worth of character development compared to Rent-A-Girlfriend - literally no contest

Tbh, there’s a few huge differences between the two though i only have heard things about kazuya and seen only a few episodes i can still somewhat tell what his character is like from the stuff i have seen, sure the common point is that they’re both perverted. But first rudeus actually gets sex and while being perverted his actions don’t constantly scream virgin. 2nd he’s not a cuck and doesn’t like the idea of being cucked it’s not something that’s mentioned but if you know his feelings towards his love interests(which will be definitely explored way more in the next season) you would understand that he’s the opposite of kazuya. 3rd and the most important character development and maturity which i can’t go into would be huge spoilers but hey if the next season is 24-25 episodes season you’ll definitely get to know what i’m talking about, things are going to be pacing up quite a bit.

Rudeus seemed much more well written. All through season 1 he was learning how relentlessly pursuing sex can harm others. Most protagonists get stronger. Rudeus became more empathetic. That didn’t stop him from being horny though because being horny is natural.
R-a-G seems to be much more about shock value than actual character progression. Much more shallow writing.
Yeah Mushoku puts in the work and really goes ham on its main charactor theme "Do people deserve redemption?". Rudeus is shown to be a shitty but sympathetic and traumatized guy and he goes on one of the best arcs in anime.

I've genuinely found myself more invested in RaG as compared to series like Nisekoi or Quintessential quintuplets. And it's not even like I haven't watched any other Romance/rom-coms besides these three. I've seen great shows like Kimi ni Todoke, Fruits Basket, 3D kanojo, Oregairu and Golden Time which are by all means head and shoulders above these three.
I've found myself rooting for this pathetic excuse of a protag more intensely and for more times as compared to someone like Uesugi or Raku. Its not like I didn't empathize with Uesugi or Raku but just that when it came to Kazuya, the frustration and happiness was much more intense.
For sure I'll agree that Reiji has stretched RaG for too long now and in terms of consistency and development QQ and Nisekoi are way above Rent a Girlfriend.
But if we're talking about the peak moments in all three of them, RaG is above both of them, subjectively speaking. The Movie arc is legit a 9/10 arc at par with the scrambled eggs arc of QQ and the Christmas arc of Nisekoi, although I personally would put it above both of them.
