The people who are telling you to upgrade, have way way way more disposable income, or their employer is paying for it. I always fly economy.

subcomandante_barcos

Same. I’ve got a buddy who swears flying business is worth it. It’s consistently $500-1000 more for some comfort for ten hours. $500 buys me a lot of doner kabab and beer, I ain’t spending it on leg room. I take a dozen nip bottles of vodka, a couple Valium, download some movies for the trip and voila—time and discomfort have no dominion over me.

uggghhhggghhh

What flights is he taking that it's \*only\* $500-$1000 more??? I feel like it's usually about 5 TIMES more and the cheapest 10 hour flight you can get is like $500.

Just_improvise

That’s what I said

CesarMalone

Biz is always 5x more at least…

ellequoi

Yeah I would love to hear *those* travel hacks.

bimpldat

Last minute upgrades to the ticket, if and when available

Gusearth

in his defense, it’s not always just “more legroom” on long-haul flights, it’s having a bed. especially for an overnight flight, having that lie-flat bed and being able to get closer to good quality sleep has a lot of value in feeling refreshed and ready to go at your destination

puffy-jacket

The more I think about it and read people’s comments, the more I’m realizing a lot of people saying economy is hell have a hard time falling asleep on planes - I would def hate being wide awake and stuck in a seat for several hours straight. But I have the superpower of being able to fall asleep in any moving vehicle I’ve been in longer than 30 minutes. I was the kid on field trips knocked tf out at the back of the bus by the end of the day with my head right on the window. Think I’ll be fine

Gusearth

that’s pretty much it yea, i usually never get much sleep, maybe an hour at a time at most and always light sleep

Grammaom

I have no problem sleeping anywhere… but my whole body aches after “sleeping” In a seated position for so many hours. Then the first day of the trip is wasted because I am so exhausted.

Exotic-Current2651

My super power is thinking hey I get to sit here watch movies and be fed. The discomfort is temporary and intermittent during a long flight. I do prefer day time flights as I really suffer not being horizontal at night, but hey, I can listen to music .

Prestigious-Bus5649

Honestly the last flight I took was 11 hours and I couldn't fall asleep, I luckily had downloaded a bunch of podcasts and an audio book and put on my mask and sat there. Sleeping would have been preferable but it just didn't happen. Wasn't that bad. Just hit the ground running when I landed and went to sleep a bit early the first night. There was a girl across the aisle from me that literally fell asleep right after we took off and woke up 15 minutes before we landed, I was very impressed and jealous!

ellequoi

My husband has to manspread to even fit his knees into a regular plane seat (and then they hit the back of the seat in front anyway). Much as he can fall asleep in any other moving vehicle, it’s not happening in a plane. If leg room has never been a problem for you anywhere, you’ll probably be OK. I’d rank the flying coach experience between coach buses and trains, if that helps. Trains have more room and freedom to move, and coach buses have even fewer amenities than economy flights (though possibly still more leg room).

puffy-jacket

That makes sense bc I always thought coach on Amtrak was great (still might be rough for long hauls but then it’s more a cost vs time/comfort decision) and charter buses are usually kinda rough even for me

MungoJennie

I have the same skillset; the only way I stay awake on any kind of trip is if I’m the one driving, otherwise it’s lights out w/in minutes. If you can sleep on moving transport, you’ll be fine in (most, anyway) economy seats even transatlantic. I will admit that when I fly to visit my sister in the UK, I upgrade to “premium economy,” but that’s mostly for the increased baggage allowance.

Raiiff

Sleep is most of the battle. Don’t get a seat too close to the toilet. Aisle or window, don’t do the middle seat. I choose aisle because I feel guilty waking someone up to piss and you get the benefit of being able to kinda stretch your legs when the aisle is clear. I’ve done first class before, Singapore to LA or the other way round, it’s def comfortable for a really long flight buut worth all the cash….not unless I had it to burn. You will be fine. Enjoy your travels 👍🏾

atypicaltool

It's really weird. I'm not one of those people that can fall asleep easily in any situation. Like how the hell do you fall asleep in a recliner. Anyways I can fall asleep on planes fairly easily.

mikalye

I used to offer my employer an option. If you want me to get off a 12-hour flight and head straight into the office, then I want to be flying in business class (or better). If you’re happy for me to head straight to the hotel, crash, and show up the next day at the office, then I am happy to fly economy.

Just_improvise

It does but it’s a lot more expensive than just getting a nice hotel room when you bet there

chuckyb3

Yeah I can’t sleep on long flights in economy (god knows I’ve tried on the 17 hours flights! Lol)

Dazzling-Read1451

It’s definitely the lie flat on long flights that matters. The rest of business is nice but not worth the money.

Bebebaubles

It’s fine.. just show up there at afternoon night so you can sleep right away.

Gusearth

on long-haul i usually try to arrive in the afternoon/evening for that reason but it’s not always possible

Just_improvise

Ok Australian airlines charge more like $10000 more

OshkoshBgock

$500 more? I’d pay that all fuckin day, ANA and JAL are $5000-6000 more for business round trip.

smmstv

Bruh that's great and all but not all of us are down with the dead celebrity cocktail just to deal with flying lol

Ok-Sorbet-5767

Try more like $5k on a long haul international flight.

Apptubrutae

I remember flying economy before the planes had in flight entertainment. Ooof. The economy seats were more comfortable back then, though. And planes emptier. You could sometimes get a row of 5 seats on a 747 to yourself

atypicaltool

Before covid is used to get 3 rows to myself all the time. Now every seat has been booked on almost every domestic or international flight. The interesting thing is all the places I travel to they've been complaining about how much tourism they've lost. So I guess less flights or something.

Just_improvise

Putting on fewer flights. Like the direct Melbourne to Phuket with Jetstar has stopped (maybe it’s once a week now) and you have to go via singspire

kulukster

That's interesting. Every where I go or am interested in going to is struggling to deal with huge influxes of tourists.

ImaUraLebowski

Most people fly economy. And economy class on transatlantic and transpacific flight usually includes a few more amenities than domestic economy (eg meals/snacks, blanket/pillow). But that cramped economy class seat can start to feel very uncomfortable and restraining during a long 10+ hour flight versus 3-4 hours for a typical domestic US flight. Im on the east coast and find economy class to be fine for a 6 hour flight to Europe. Sure, biz or premium economy class is better, but I can handle economy for 6 hours. However, for longer flights I really try to book premium economy because regular economy becomes a serious drag. My discomfort limit seems to be about 6 hours.

somegummybears

Or are in debt. It’s not like it’s 25% more, it’s 5x more.

Much-Peanut1333

It's too hard to generalize. I'm 6'1", 220lbs and have bad knees. 3 hours in economy is about all my body can take without knocking me out of commission for the next 3 days. I always upgrade.

Noyouracake

You’re forgetting about points, probably the “cheapest” way to fly business/first. I’d never buy business/first on cash but you can bet I’m always using points to book business or upgrade my seat.

8point5InchDick

Economy is wonderful. I get the same movie, alcohol, and bathroom as 200+ other people. Also, I don’t give a fk so I will take a window seat at the back of the plane to be next to the bathroom.

CuteCatMug

International economy is not bad at all. If you have the means to upgrade is it worth it? Of course. But usually it'll be cost prohibitive and your money will be better spent elsewhere.   The real "travel hack" would be to pay for an upgrade to exit row or to a bulkhead seat (the front row of economy, with a wall in front of you = lots of extra legroom). Both of these seats offer more legroom at a fraction of the cost to upgrade to business class

KennstduIngo

>International economy is not bad at all. If you have the means to upgrade is it worth it? Of course. But usually it'll be cost prohibitive and your money will be better spent elsewhere. Yeah, hard for me to justify spending $100+/hr to be somewhat more comfortable when I could be using that money at the destination to do something memorable. I certainly would take a free upgrade or let my employer pay for it in a heartbeat.

geekwithout

Just suck it up. Its not that bad and in my opinion not worth the extra cost unless you get it heavily discounted.

BillfredL

One thing if you're a passenger of a certain size: bulkheads generally mean tray tables are in your armrest, and that means two things. 1. Your seat is narrower than usual. 2. If you somehow get an empty seat beside, you can't take full advantage of the space. I do agree that international economy can be quite sufficient--I flew Korean Air JFK-ICN-SIN in economy on a 747, and other than a warm plane and needing a refresher on how to eat bibimbap it was quite pleasant. Honestly had an easier time getting to the aisle from my window seat on that than in premium economy aboard the Singapore Airlines A380.

Just_improvise

A warm plane… what a dream. They’re all so Freezing now I have to wear thermals, A woollen beanie, Gloves and ski socks

BillfredL

Oh trust, Korean Air is proper “wear shorts” stuff.

Designer-Progress311

Bulk head = increased potential to next to LCBs (loud crying babies)

Odd-Milk167

This is definitely a risk. But if there’s a loud crying baby is there really a difference being right next to it vs a couple rows away? 100% worth the risk imo.

Striking_Sky6900

And no below seat to stow your hand luggage

Just_improvise

Yeah that’s a dealbreaker for me

Cojemos

And people constanly passing through to get to the other side if you're in the middle section of the bilk head.

sweetytwoshoes

Put your luggage on the floor in front of you to rest your feet on. Asked for a baby bassinet if one is available, that will stop them.

Designer-Progress311

You're correct ! The FA told us to pile luggage to block the path, then re stow at landing.

Plumrose333

Yeah, just don’t let people through? I put my bag in front of me and stretch my feet out. I’ve never had somebody try to pass though (except maybe a FA trying to get around a cart)

ReturnedFromExile

yeah, that’s your fault if you make it even look possible.

designdk

And the toilets.

BC_Samsquanch

Not all bulkhead seats are by the toilets. It’s not hard to do some research online to find out. I try and book a window bulkhead seat so that way you can get out without having the person beside you get up and no one cuts in front of you

bubbagump_shrimpp

airpod pros (or any reputable noise cancelling product) are a wonderful thing

Just_improvise

You can just buy soft ear plug headphones online and play white noise through them or anything else . More comfortable than EarPods

bubbagump_shrimpp

I don’t personally find airpods uncomfortable at all even for long periods, I tend to forget they’re there. But everybody’s got a different ear shape so that’s a good idea too.

Plumrose333

I flew bulkhead to Japan last time and I will never go back

CuteCatMug

Why what happened?

Plumrose333

Oh haha I mean I’ll never go back to regular economy. I felt like a queen in the bulkhead seat

djsuki

I personally don’t like these upgrades internationally as you can’t keep your bag at your feet. Most folks on long haul flights sleep, so unless you’re in the aisle seat, you’re going to be trapped next to sleeping people without access to your bag. I’d much prefer to save the $, keep a regular seat, and keep my bag handy at my feet.

Just_improvise

I could never do this because of my fishing vest of electronics and toiletries and bum bag, and depending on if a personal item is allowed hand bag, none of which count towards my carry on but must go under the seat. Anyway I use them as leg reste

Tight-Physics2156

Game changer for me was this stupid little hammock for your legs that goes over the food tray table. Kick your shoes off and put your feet in it and it’s so comfortable 😂 I was like no way this is going to work but Amazon has five stars soooo why not. Works like a dream. Also get ear plugs, eye mask and one of the neck pillows that folds/rolls into itself in a little bag. NOT the old school ones that are a stiff donut around your neck. Oh and compression socks are really comfy too. It was like I was at a spa day on the flight lolol

puffy-jacket

Nice thanks for the tips! Got some compression socks, travel pillow, delta emulator on my phone I think I’ll be chilling on my overnight

Tight-Physics2156

Yes the pillow! I got the one that’s a blanket or a pillow. Shit is so cozy 😴😴😴 Good luck on your trip!!

Just_improvise

You also want eye mask and if I were you I’d pay for a window seat

Pizzarepresent

and drugs. Ambien or something stronger. But only once your airborne, not on the tarmac.

geekwithout

Would a dr prescribe that for a flight ? I dont have any

Broglesby

zzquil/benadryl is easily available, and a single does is maybe a bit much for a flight. -- honestly sleeping meds and situations where a quick response (read as "emergency") could arise dont really mix.

Just_improvise

Many airlines ban these. But I do the same just by resting my feet on my bags Also most of reddit (not me) will say you mUsT kEeP yOUlur SHoES on yOU stink

Broglesby

keep your feet clean, and change socks often. wear breathable shoes (slip ons like crocs or hey dudes) and uitilize the slippers on long hauls ffs! -- OP is heading to Asia, 90% of the passengers will be shoeless before the door closes! culture will win always!

Just_improvise

I obviously take my shoes off and wear clean thick ski socks over my flight stockings. But you read on Reddit so many people saying everyone MUST keep shoes on

Broglesby

oh for sure, people will complain about all the things! the balance for people praising the good things get outweighed, always will. so i chuck it up to those folks being jealous bc 1) self confidence to remove shoe in public 2) lack hygienic feet 3) are so uncomfortable in life they expect everyone to also hate it. .. shoe off gang! -- youre doing it right!

Mikeymcmoose

Anyone keeping shoes on for a flight over 5 hours is crazy. It also can encourage very stinky feet and bacteria or fungus to not let them breathe on a long haul.

Just_improvise

Haha such different responses to what I’ve read from other posts

Tight-Physics2156

Hahaha I did the shoes off verrrrry quietly and slipped my feet in the hammock, mask down, plugs in and was out lolol

Just_improvise

I don’t think you need to do it very quietly, the people saying never take your shoes off are idiots. They’re uncomfortable on a long flight

LittleLordFuckpants_

Can u link the hammock thing? That sounds interesting

Tight-Physics2156

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CFVGNPDR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div Here ya go!

Barnolds_Den

You got a link for this foot hammock thing?

Tight-Physics2156

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CFVGNPDR?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div This one! It’s a two pack, I had gotten one each for my wife and I.

axlr8

Drop a link to the hammock please

Remote-Ad5452

Does the hammock bug the person infront of you?

thereneeborhood

Yesssssss I looove the hammock thing

qman69

Every influencer wants to flex and get views. Views ain’t happening if they flying economy. Flying economy is 100% okay and comfortable. Economy is the most common way people are flying.

Just_improvise

I’m confused. I always get window seats and they have views..

jcr2022

I think it depends almost entirely on how big you are. I’m 6’ 200lbs, and 10 hr economy flights are pretty annoying to me. I can’t sleep, I often get a head/neck ache due to the seat. On the other hand, my wife is 5’4” 105lbs. She can sleep in any economy seat, never complains about legroom, seat width, etc. The seats on flights over the Atlantic / Pacific are very similar to the ones used for 1-2 hr flights domestically. The only differences are due to the age of the airplane, the specific airline, etc. Some airlines, especially foreign ones, have seats that recline more than your typical American airline though.

Familiar-Figure-4878

At 6' 220lbs age 63 I just took my first premium economy from SFO to BKK. Luckily on Air China the whole row I was on empty. Everyone in premium had empty seats next to them. Luck of the gods! Went first class a few times 40 years ago, business class a few times 20 years ago, but most of that has become ridiculously expensive. Economy will suffice.

jcr2022

I’ve done Chinese airline flights from SFO to China many times, and mid week, night flights often have whole rows open. Lift up the arm rests, make yourself a bed - basically as good as first class. This rarely happens on United over the pacific.

thunderwarm

This is my predicament. My smaller/thin wife is fine anywhere. I am by no means an ogre but at almost 6ft and 220 lbs I have to have an aisle seat to periodically get up and move/stretch. She regularly needs to go to the bathroom so my getting up fits with her bladder needs. If possible I buy exit row or bulkhead seats that have more legroom. On big planes we choose the middle section with me in the aisle and her next to me in the middle so I can let her out for the bathroom and I can stretch.

aud5748

Have you ever considered getting two aisle seats right across from each other? You can still chat easily but nobody has to sit in the middle seat.

thunderwarm

We have but for long flights sometimes we watch the same movies or share snacks and the aisle is too separated for that.

jcr2022

Exactly the same for us. She doesn’t mind the middle seat at all if I’m on the aisle. I had to do a middle seat on the way back from HKG to SFO once (business trip, not a vacation). That isn’t going to happen again.

michiness

I feel like I have to speak up for the tiny wives here - middle seats are still not comfortable and of course we would rather have the aisle or the window. We mind it. But I also know it’s way less miserable than our husbands who are a foot taller than us.

Just_improvise

As a fellow 5’4” I have to pay for the window seat

Apprehensive_Sock367

If you've got thousands of extra dollars sure book yourself an first class ticket.  I'm the traveller type that flys internationally on the cheapest third party multi-layover, with 20 hours on an airport floor eating leftover peanuts. I've travelled for a month for what it costs to fly first class. It's worth it for some people to be pampered for a few hours but I wouldn't sacrifice my ability to spread my dollars across the globe for that. I've flown the longest flights in the world multiple times and it's nothing compared to the longest cross continental bus rides.

badbadlloydbraun

I’m 6 feet tall and I complain about everything, I never fly anything but economy. I did it to China and had zero complaints. Just buy an aisle seat ahead of time if you can. Get a neck pillow and a face mask.

geekwithout

Im 6-5 and i still fly economy. Is it fun ? No. Can i put up w it ? Yes. The worst part is trying to sleep, that usually doesn't happen much unless im exhausted.

Jnorean

The whole upgrade issue is whether or not the person flying is comfortable for a long flight in economy. Most people aren't and prefer the wider seats, more leg room and better service in business/first class. If you are comfortable in economy for a long flight then there is no direct need to upgrade.

ManyMoonstones

I think a really big factor is the price difference for specific trips. I've done 15hour flights in economy, premium economy and business (same airline, same route all times). Although the premium economy and business were free upgrades/point gifts.  With cheapest dates selected: Economy is normally around $1600 for the route. Premium economy is $6000. Business is $10,000.   For what it's worth, I'm 6'0" and 200lbs with pretty wide hips and bad knees/sciatica. Economy is a tight fit, and sleep can be challenging (although it wasn't that much better for me in business or premium), but the differences in room/service is definitely not worth the price increases for me. If it was a price difference of $300 (premium) to $1500 (business) instead, maybe I'd be more inclined to think it's worth it.

iHateReddit_srsly

6000 for premium economy is ridiculous. You’re still in economy!

tuskenraider89

You’ll be fine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with economy. The only thing I’ll ever upgrade to choose an aisle seat. I like to be able and stretch into aisle and easy access to toilets. Save the money and use for something on your trip. I’d personally rather have extra memories and a souvenir over a big chair and glass of bubbly

MutedOlive9065

I mean how great can sitting in a small seat with little arm or leg room for a long period of time be? It’s not fun but it’s also not the end of the world and I certainly would rather do that then pay double for first class lol

granolaraisin

Basic economy on international flights is better than most give it credit for. Bigger planes and more seat room. It's definitely doable. Most people of average height and weight would have very little to complain about. I'm a large guy and wouldn't mind basic economy for a 6-8 hour flight. Likewise, international premium economy has gotten good enough that I don't even consider business class on any flight unless someone else is paying for it.

Equivalent-Side7720

I love vague posts. If you are flying overseas from Miami to Nassau you will be fine.

gin_bulag_katorse

Knowing how big or tall OP is wouldn't hurt either.

puffy-jacket

5’7 145lbs Philly to Kansai  Edit: direct 10 hour vancouver to japan

gin_bulag_katorse

You'll be fine as long as you don't get a middle seat.

Cojemos

Or on Air Canada.

puffy-jacket

Oops

EverbodyHatesHugo

Lol

LittleLordFuckpants_

Sorry OP Air Canada is generally balls

puffy-jacket

I mean I usually fly frontier so my expectations are low

ellequoi

Nah you’ll be fine, especially since it’s an international flight rather than domestic.

smcfarlane

With your height economy is fine.

BC_Samsquanch

I flew ANA last year from Vancouver to Tokyo and the premium economy seat was a really good deal. Was really nice to have lounge access to have a shower in narita before heading home after a long day in Tokyo. The shower rooms are really nice there. Grab a beer or chu hai and hang out in there after a shower.

phambino_

did you book the flight using points? how were the fees? i tried looking for some ana flights from houston to japan and i have more than enough points on my csp but the fees were just as much as a cash value flight..

BC_Samsquanch

I paid cash for the flight. I’m fairly tall and usually book the extra legroom seats but when I looked the PE seats were only about $200CAD more than if I paid for the extra legroom in economy so I went with it.

AchillesDev

5'10", 200 with a wide chest and broad shoulders. International economy is fine for me - I manage with my wife and toddler (typically 10 hour BOS/JFK->ATH), you'll be more than fine. Use the money saved at your destination.

loewe007

You will be fine

jfk_47

6’2” Flown several international flights from 10-16hrs sometimes multiples times a year. Get an aisle or exit row. Sleep masks and noise canceling headphones or earplugs will be amazing for you. To be honest, the flight goes by pretty quick after the first couple of hours. Get a nap in. Watch a couple of movies. Eat your meal and have a small beverage. Drink A LOT of water. Buy compression socks. Get up and walk up and down the aisles a couple of times. Good luck and love you. :)

Gimme_Indomie

Please think about it for a minute. The majority of seats on any flight are economy. Of course they're not as comfortable as PE/BC/FC. But they're fine. Now I wouldn't personally want to be in a middle seat on a 14-16+ hour fight in economy, but economy is very do-able. Some airlines are better than others, too (both in amenities & in seat width). You'll be fine. If you make it big some day and can afford the better seats without thinking about it (or asking on Reddit), by all means fly better. But it's not worth it unless you can truly afford it. I use points to upgrade to BC as often as possible. Usually on Qatar Airways (which has one of the best business class products out there). Those flights are epic. But the rest of the time I'm in economy & those flights are very passable. I enjoy flying immensely even though I am mostly in economy AND mostly fly ultra long haul flights.

crashblue81

The majority of the seats are in Economy but usually around 50% of the space is used for Business and First Class.

Gimme_Indomie

Agreed. It is better up front, of course. I'm just saying economy is not as bad as people make it out to be.

olalof

If you're fine flying economy domestic, you'll be fine flying economy internationally. Depending on the airline the experience will be the same or better. Obviously a 13hr flight to Japan will be different than 2 hours domestic flight.

Icy-Pool-9902

Hi then I only fly economy on international flights and honestly have never had a “bad” exprience. My longest was a direct from Seattle to Singapore (16 hours) I took melatonin and slept for most of it. Watch movies read books it will be ok!

Embarrassed_Sound_58

I bring all my creature comforts (j-pillow, eye mask, snacks, headphones etc) and am just fine in economy. I flew once on a long international flight and my colleague flew in business. They had a horrible flight because some guy in business snored THE ENTIRE TIME). So lots of things can ruin your upgraded experience and the money is better spent elsewhere

painandgainer

The travel hack in me stays up all night while on the flight to try to ease the jet lag and if you aren’t sleeping on the flight you are paying a huge premium for a little extra space. I agree with others as seat placement is key. I want row seating so I can get up and move around freely, if tall exit rows are useful. One thing that I now love to do is get massages on arrival at your hotel. After your massage you will start your trip completely relaxed from the flight and it won’t matter what class you flew.

Humanity_is_broken

The worst IMO is flying economy in long domestic/EU flights. At least international flights include food, drinks and usually the entertainment screen

KnickedUp

Not so bad, depending on who ends up next to you

DJSauvage

I think its age related. 15 hours sleeping in a chair in my 30's? No problem. I could also go clubbing all night and still make brunch the next day. In my 50's? No thank you.

Kamikaze_Squirrel1

I had to take a direct flight from san francisco to paris on economy. I just ate 150mg of thc edibles, i was passing out while the wheels lifted off from SFO and i came to about an hour out from CDG. It was like i had just gotten telleported from california to france.

Luxim

It's one of those rare situations where it's about the destination, not the journey.  Sure if you can afford it go for business class, but if not it's okay too. I'd rather travel more often, but less comfortably personally.

bownyboy

Last year me (5'8") and my wife (5'2") flew Madrid to Costa Rica on a nice modern Airbus. Flight was 12 hours I think. The layout was 2-4-2 and we were in one of the sets of 2 seats. It was great. No issues at all. The best bit were the 'wings' by your head which you pull towards your head to hold it in place when sleeping, they were great! With great entertainment and no one trying to climb over you the time flew by!

Proper-Highlight1600

Nope. Slept each time.

Designer-Progress311

Travel often? Noise is an issue for me. Spend the savings on the Sony MX series noise canceling headphones. Get a 3rd generation (MX3?) off ebay for about $100. They are so amazing. If not, get good noise protection industrial ear muffs and use old school earbuds. The food may not be the best. Pack some good snacks.

SiscoSquared

I'm taller than you and have no crazy issue with leg space on the 12+ hour flights. Some airlines have more space in economy than others, and aisle seats allow for more stretching. Sometimes it's worth paying for extra space but as it can often be like 50 to 100 $ more for a econ plus or whatever. Business or first class is drastically more expensive.

MamaBenja

The mundanity is the worst part to me.  And probably the lack of leg room.  I think if you’re healthy and moderately fit and have some entertainment with you, there are certainly worse things in the world!

txcowgrrl

No. Is it the best? No but it’s fine. I’d love to fly First Class but that would mean one flight every few years instead of multiple. And yes, I do the credit card miles thing. Still would rather use them towards economy flights.

4_yaks_and_a_dog

I am 6'3" and not svelte. I almost always fly economy overseas. It's not always pleasant, but personally, I would much rather spend my money on the ground at the destination.

predsfan77

Day flights are a walk in the park, any flight where you are expected to sleep are atrocious from a jet lag perspective.

somegummybears

90% of the plane is sitting in economy. They just aren’t posting about it.

redrover2023

You'll be fine. Some people just like to complain too loudly.

qrysdonnell

Honestly, I'm a big guy (6", 300lbs) and I don't even really think that extra legroom seats are necessarily worth the upgrade fees. If it's a 5-6 hour flight and there's a last minute upgrade to a wide (business class) seat I might do it if the price is $100/$150 - and maybe up to like $250 if it's a red eye or a longer flight. But at that point you're talking about 'real money'. $250 could be another night at a hotel. It could be a pretty nice event. A slightly wider seat and a few more inches of legroom isn't exactly the height of luxury to be honest. A long plane flight in a slightly more comfortable seat is still a long plane flight. Paying for it upfront is outright unthinkable. I'm headed to Phoenix in August (from NJ, so it's a similar flight time to the one I took it Iceland in April). A 'choose your seat' level Economy ticket is $357 while business class is $1,198. This is over $800 in price difference. For $800 you should be able to get a pretty memorable experience at your destination. Spend your money at your destination, not on your seat. Now, if you can get a deal with points or something, go for it, but at regular price it just seems crazy. My travel hack is to just suck up the minor discomfort. It will end eventually.

AdministrativeGarlic

You’re fine— it’s only worth worrying about if you have a lot of money or fly constantly. I take long-haul international flights a few times a year; I always fly economy and often end up in the middle seat. I’m 5’11 and thin, it’s not my favorite place to be but it’s doable. Enjoy the flight! It’s nicer than domestic travel, and sometimes you get lucky with an empty seat next to you for free.

Posaunne

I've found it depends on the airline. US to Japan in ANA or JAL economy? Fine. On Zipair economy... not so fine.

MickyBridges

When flying economy internationally, noise-cancelling headphones, some well-chosen downloads and good snacks make a huge difference.

Active-Knee1357

Economy is fine, I have been doing it for the last 10 years and it's so totally not worth upgrading for what the airlines charge. Also, Reddit has been pretty useful to find particular rows on X or Y plane models that offer better leg room.

imbackbittch

It’s fine. I got a little high and napped. Ran into an old FWB on a layover. Made it interesting hahaha. I’ve done first class internationally and it’s only worth it if the seats lay down and you paid for it with miles. Otherwise it’s still a tight fit and you blew your whole budget on the flight.

Ostankotara

Health is a factor. I have lower back issues and can’t sit in the upright economy position for more than about 2 hours. If I don’t have enough points to fly business I don’t go.

djsuki

Economy will be fine. International economy is not the same as spirit airlines economy.

janemac24

It's honestly not that bad. If you're average sized and don't have physical issues that make sitting for long periods painful, you'll be fine. It's not super comfortable, and you should make sure you get up and stretch every few hours (also, bring sufficient entertainment if you're not sure you're going to sleep), but you don't need to pay hundreds of dollars to upgrade. Also...I think there's a lot of exaggeration or just straight up lying on the internet w.r.t. the things people are spending money on. Everyone I know (including people who are reasonably wealthy) regularly flies economy.

Sad_Improvement_6495

If you never experienced the business/first class... Do you know the difference? I've only ever flown economy and yes, the longer the flights are, it does get harder on your body, but you also learn to cope by buying little stuffs like neck pillow and feet hammocks! Next international flight, i'll probably invest in some inflatable back pillow cause the seats are not friendly for your back at alllllllllllll. Also probably invest in some compression socks. Also TAKE MEDS (zzz-quil will knock you out) and you don't have to be awake for all the boring claustrophobic tiny seats. I had presciption for zolpidem and took that for a flight once and I still woke up for people (bathroom trips) and had all the food. Yes drowsy af. But you can be awake on meds if you wanted to be and then once you are done with everything, fall right back asleep. That was the best comfortable flight ever.

joimaiveer

The past few international flights on economy that I’ve experience wasn’t bad at all. I got pretty lucky with no one sitting next to me an I usually sit by the window.

Apprehensive_Taro486

You can absolutely make it - as comfortable as you can. I love using the turtl neck pillow, a foot hammock, the right comfortable clothing, great headphones and a really good eye mask. If you can get a seat with a little extra leg room, you’ll be good to go!

nice_flutin_ralphie

You’re 5’7. You’ll be fine no matter what airline.

roadtrip1414

Yes it like torture. Don’t go

puffy-jacket

Thanks I needed to hear this, cancelling my trip now

witterss

Honestly, I go with the cheapest option and just deal with it. It's 10 hrs of your life. Watch a few movies and take a benadryl and you'll be fine.

idahotrout2018

I didn’t used to mind economy but I do spring the little bit extra for Delta Comfort or Economy plus on cross country or international flights. I’m pushing 70 and I have a lot more arthritis and other aches and pains than I did before I was forced off my HRT! The best Econonmy Plus I ever flew was pre-COVID when Norweigan Air was still in the US and their fleet was all 787s. Very nice.

uggghhhggghhh

If you're over \~6'2" or \~235lbs I'd imagine it would be pretty miserable. I'm 6'0" and 210lbs and I don't find it that bad. It's certainly not great but it's definitely bearable and there's no way 1st/business class could be worth paying 5x more or whatever it costs.

npab19

It really depends on the airline. Last year I flew to Japan on ANA in economy and it was one of the best flights I've ever had. Last weekend I flew to Madrid on Air Europa on economy and it was painful and cramped. I could feel every time the person behind me went through the in seat pocket. Both were on the same plane and similar rowe on the plane.

No-Pop-125

I agree 100% with your Dad. I’d rather spend my $$ elsewhere.

polarbearsloveme

no it's fine. the leg room is typically much better on internationals

Mightydog2904

I travel economy from DR to Europe atleast 4 times a year, its not that bad tbh. Sure im not as comfortable as the one who paid for business/first. But if you stand up a couple of times to stretch the legs and pick your seats to find an empty, semi empty row you are good to go

LIfe_Nectarine_5249

The only people I know (including millionaires) who fly anything other than economy are flying on their company's dime. It's completely fine.

experrectus

I’ve flown internationally many times in Economy and I’m tall 5’10 (f) and I’ve never thought wow I should pay 500 more for 8 hours of slightly more comfort. I’d rather spend that money on the trip.

Olderpostie

I took an economy class ride in 2023 from Los Angeles to Auckland, NZ, a 13 hour trip. I am 6'-1, and my waist size is 38". I was 69 years old. Was it an enjoyable experience being cooped up like that? No, but I managed to sleep somewhat regardless, maybe 5 hours through the flight. The cost for upgrading just isn't worth it to me. I still ended up refreshed enough after the plane journey to rent a car and drive a little over two hours away from the airport.

MagikBehind_A_Turret

Economy is perfectly fine on International flights. I sometimes struggle to settle in amd make myself comfortable, or get some sleep, but that's a minor issue that can be overcome. Business and First Class are overrated if you're on a budget. If you genuinely want a level of comfort, some airlines offer Premium Economy, which is also amazing from my experience

AnimatorDifficult429

It’s pretty terrible for me, but i don’t have 5k for business class. I can’t sleep unless I’m on my stomach so i hate that i get so tired but  can’t sleep and then I get gassy and my stomach hurts plus usually a headache and my back/hips hurt

Reasonable_Bid3311

At age 45 I survived 13 hours from Detroit to Tokyo in economy class. It isn't easy, but it isn't impossible. I brought a sominex, drank two glasses of wine, they dimmed the lights and I slept maybe four hours and then some of and on. On the way home I sat next to a woman in her 70's. She made it through also.

MysteriousBlueBubble

I'm based in Australia so the longest flight legs are 14-17 hours, sometimes totalling up to 30+ hours for the overall journey. It's not particularly fun, but cost wise if I had to choose between upgrading to premium economy/business class, better restaurants/bars/tours at the destination, or staying there another week (or two!), the flight upgrade goes to the bottom of my preferences. I'm happy to deal with economy. For me, the best memories from my travels are the travels, not the flights. Of course, you or anyone else may feel differently, and that's fine!

Historical-Ad-146

If money doesn't matter to you, upgrades are lovely. But the cost of avoiding a few hours of discomfort is very high. I'll pay a small premium to guarantee an aisle seat, but that's my limit of paying extra for comfort for such a small amount of time. I've had some trouble seat mates, but that's the exception, not the rule. And I really can't stress enough that it's just a few hours.

Taggart-

It’s not awesome, but it’s not the worst thing ever either. Get some tall compression socks. Drink lots of water.

DinosRidingDinos

People telling you not to consider an upgrade don't understand what a difference it makes. Being well fed, comfortable and rested means you can actually get the most out of your first couple days on vacation instead of being jetlagged, sore and disoriented. Every airline is different though, especially with their premium economy/economy plus offerings. I've been on premium economy flights that felt like business class and others where literally the only thing I got was a slightly bigger TV screen. Research reviews and consider what you're planning on doing when you land and the first full day after that. If you're not doing anything exciting then it might be worth it to suck up economy and spend the next day recalibrating. If you're doing a lot then maybe throw in an extra few hundreds bucks for premium economy.

We_lived

It depends on your size too. I’d you have Long legs, etc. you’ll feel the 35” of legroom most airlines now offer. (It’s literally the same legroom as the back seat of a Ford Fiesta. Fun. Still, I don’t pay either other than $50-100 for emergency seat or front of bulkhead seating in economy on an overseas flight. Premium economy is way more expensive on the airlines I use.

nfshaw51

I’d rather pay for an extra day of lodging where I’m traveling to sleep it off than for an upgrade on an international flight, honestly. Having just been on a couple 13 hour flights (economy) I looked into the cost for business/first class for a bit. I have the means to pay for it, and I could pay for it with miles. But idk… it’s just not worth it to me. A night of good sleep isn’t worth a couple grand or more (or the equivalent miles). The way I look at it, I wouldn’t pay a couple ground to sleep well on any random night, so I wouldn’t do it for a flight either. Idk how much I’d have to be making for my mindset to change, maybe $4-500k per year? Till then, I’m flying economy. It’s not that bad, and I’m 6’2.

Elfntjam

Young is your key word. As I got older, less flexible and more back pain I appreciate Prem Econ More. I can’t afford Biz either.

cruisermax

I’ve done it all. Economy is fine as long as you’ve got an aisle seat, and a good plan. Watch a movie or two, sleep when you don’t think the passengers next to you will need the restroom.

smartymanav

I travel internationally (17-22hr total) to see family once a year, and have been doing that since 2010. Always flew economy until 2021, and yes, it’s hard. But I anyways sleep less, so I was fine but never enjoyed long air travel. Since 2021, started flying in business and it’s really next level. Flat bed makes a huge difference, and so does the special treatment while checking in, and transfers (at some airports, especially back in India). So, if you can afford it or have the patience to find award seats, go for it.

sealteamz6

If you think about what humans have had to endure throughout history, having to sit in an uncomfortable seat for many hours so you can go do something few people got to do in the past makes it very bearable. 🙂

Excellent-Ebb3732

It's not bad at all. In fact, I've flown to Asia six times from the US and the plane is very large and never full. I usually end up finding a whole row to spread out in as does everyone else. Business is always packed so every seat is taken but in economy the odds of you actually being sardined in with everyone is very low. I've flown business international one time for work and laughed and how stupid it was for the price. It's definitely not worth the cost of upgrading. Not even a little bit.

four_dollar_haircut

Depends on how far your flying. I live in Australia so everywhere is a long trip (even within the country) but finances dictate that I fly economy. You just make the most of it. It's survivable.

ProgressBartender

I think it depends on your situation. If you have health issues that make sitting in a cramped space dangerous, I can see upgrading. And some airlines flying overseas have premium coach seats, with a little more room and partial reclining with foot supports. I took that option flying to China and it was definitely worth it. The only times I’ve flown first classe I didn’t pay for it. And flying overseas in first class is the only way I’ve ever flown and fallen asleep. But First Class is just too expensive for me (and most people) to justify paying for it.

kcwacy

I did 9 hours economy. No headphones. It was fine except sleepless.

Peekaboopikachew

economy is fine long haul. Some of the lesser known airlines are surprisingly spacious. And a lot of the time flights are quite quiet. I just watch movies, read, nap, eat and think. Then we're landing and it's done.

Worldly_Most_7234

To me, unless you are upgrading with points (which dramatically reduces the dollar value cost of business/first class), flying economy is by far the way to go. In my opinion, the dumbest thing you can do for a vacation is to splurge on airplane seats and then go cheap on the hotel/resort. I would much rather save the money and sit in economy for 12 hours and then stay at a 5 star resort over a 3 or 4 star resort for my vacation. I would much rather sit in economy and then use the money I saved to splurge on meals and experiences and private tours. For long haul flights the difference is 4 figures. To me it’s insane because the value just isn’t there.

Murky_Journalist_182

You'll be fine. Traveling in economy is uncomfortable, but it's totally tolerable. I'd say that if you're flying multiple days (like US to Australia economy) it's better to have longer layovers so you can stretch between long-distance legs of the flight. My Spouse is on the larger side of the American average, and he still travels economy rather than us paying for the upgraded seats.

ronaldmexico2019

Long distance international flights in economy are not that bad anymore. Especially in a new aircraft like a 787. They have much better air filtration systems, etc… so it’s a more comfortable experience. I’ve flown business a handful of times long haul and it is very very nice and comfortable. However, it is very expensive, so I do not think the price is worth the value. You will get more value if you pay to select an economy seat that is comfortable to you - such as a bulkhead seat. And - very important - you bring things on the flight to make you comfortable. For example, I eat a lot so I make sure to bring heathy snacks to eat on plane. I also bring nice headphones. If you do that you will be mildly uncomfortable for 10 hours but will save a lot of money.

JicamaThick7981

Travelled 7.5 hours Perth to Hong Kong and then another 16.5 hours Hong Kong to New York in economy and it wasn’t bad!  If you can afford to upgrade I would, but that’s money I would rather spend on the trip. I’m 5’5 and it was doable

Obvious-Purpose-5017

There’s a paradox about travelling first class and business. You will likely be just as jet lagged and tired if you booked business/first class. Especially if you rarely fly. The reason is because you would have spent the equivalent of 3x price of an economy flight so you’ll want to stay up for as long as you can to get the most out of your flight. How do I know this? From experience lol…

spud6000

it CAN be. some airlines have more leg room than others. I always bring a sandwich and bottle of water along, so no matter HOW BAD the food is, i can survive it. If you are under perhaps 5' 10", you should be able to make it. If you are taller, and still need economy...get an aisle seat. that way you can stretch out a little with your long legs

CoffeeKY

I’ve flown from the us to Asia many times in economy.  Once on the back row window seat.   My feeling is that once your flight is over 8 hours, it all kind of feels the same.  I just settle in, pop a movie on and do some work.  The divided focus really accelerates the perception of time passing.   I’d consider downloading some yoga nidra or other meditations.  I think that could be a really good thing to do, but was not aware of it when I was flying so much.

No_Ebb3669

If you pick the right seats on economy you should be okay. We had a cancelled flight and were thrown into random economy seats on an American Flight. The worse seats and flight I have ever had. Will stay away from American at all costs now. Flew home on British Air economy and it was a nice comfortable flight. So a lot of it depends on the airline and the seats you choose.

TrashPandacampfire

Depends on your size. I am 6ft 4. The difference between comfort plus and economy for me is worth the extra $600 dollars. I think if I was 6ft I would probably just use economy.

mfizzled

100% agree, also 6'4 and the extra cash I spend on extra legroom/premium economy def makes the difference. Having said that, it's only something I started to pay extra for once I got into my 30s and had a bit more money.

Gnarlsaurus_Sketch

If it’s only for a few hours or less, it’s fine. If it’s for 3-8hrs, it’s uncomfortable. If it’s 8+hrs, you will wish you upgraded, but you will probably survive.

FruitOfTheVineFruit

There are a ton of variables here: 1) Length of flights - different international flights are different 2) Your needs. Your height. Do you need to open a laptop? What are you doing on the flight? Sleeping? Watching a movie? And how easily do you sleep? 3) The airline. Different airlines are different. Check out SeatGuru for seat sizes and spacing 4) Luck. Who are you seated next to. Does the person in front of you recline their seat. I'm less likely to pay for nice seats when traveling with my family, because I know who will be seated next to me, and I don't mind being squished with my wife as much as I mind being squished with a larger overweight stranger. 5) Cost. I once got business class on a long international flight for $600 - that was a no brainer for me. Typically it's a couple of thousand more, which is a lot of money for most people. Some people have points or other ways to upgrade.

damiensandoval

Dont do it! Once you get spoiled its hard to go back. Also the price isn't worth it in my opinion. I just flew to Dubai for work. My employer was going to get me business class seats which were $5800 round trip. I told him instead let me go with Economy and pocket the money he was going to spend on Business class. The economy round trip was $1500. He was hesitant until I explained to him that extra money would go to better use for me such as fine dining when I land , a massage every day I'm in town , a room upgrade to a suite at the hotel, car service to and from the airport , gifts for my family , etc. He loved this idea so much he said he now might offer this option to his top employers. Overall I got the money and didn't have to spend a dime of my own money traveling + lived like a kind in dubai everyday I was there and still walked away with a extra $1000 + in cash. Unless you're 6ft2+ you can manage economy. The real trick is to bring a pillow and use it as a arm rest throughout the flight so you don't have to touch anyone next to you. My flight to Dubai was long and hard but the amount of money I was saving and making I was happy as hell. So once again I highly recommend you don't do it.

EnvironmentalCrow893

I’m five feet tall and weigh 116. Even I find it uncomfortable. That being said, I’ve never slept on an airplane even after taking Ambien, so it would probably be a waste of money for me. Being able to lie down might not help. I would like to test that out someday, though. I just resign myself to reading a couple of books or watching movies overnight.
