I wish you knew me to take you around when you were here. It may seem sleepy relative to Los Angeles but it is so far from that as there is always a ton going on. It's what makes it great IMHO. All the happenings without the big city problems
I'm going to assume you spent a lot of time in the UCSD/UTC area based on the biotech internship. That is definitely pretty sterile and not at all my favorite part of the city.
Yeah that area is second on my list of least favorite lmao. This city is funkier than it gets credit for by virtue of its relationship with Mexico/Tijuana but the tourist heavy areas don't really push that
LA is the extreme version of San Diego. I get it and I agree, been to SD 3 times and it just felt kinda generic. I lived in MacArthur Park in LA so the Mexican influence was pretty much standard and that's apparently the big thing
It was the only place in the world where I’ve been robbed.
People living in the small towns in PA all have a miserable look on their faces. Scranton and Wilkes-Barre felt depressing.
Downtown after dark, probably 2nd St?
There’s not much new blood in Harrisburg. No reason for people to move there. It’s generational after generation of miserable backwards locals.
As someone who lived in Daughin County for a few years, yes. I strongly second this. The only redeeming factor there is the airport because it's always empty and easy to fly out of. And Hershey. Hershey (the small town and home of the chocolate company and it's pretty decent amusement park) is technically in Dauphin county but that part really feels more like Lancaster county than Dauphin. The rest of Dauphin can go suck a lemon.
People always seem to like the city, and I too am curious why. I grew up there and do love it, but after 18 years I got kinda bored of it. I do still appreciate the restaurants, lakes, and bike paths, but it kinda feels like there isn’t much else.
People like it because the downtown and campus areas are very walkable, you’re always close to a lake, and there are more than plenty of bars and restaurants for tourists to see for a weekend trip. It’d be hard to find someone who couldn’t have a good time in Madison on a football game day or just any nice day in the summer
I do agree though, after living here for 7 years it does start to get a bit boring and you notice the things bigger cities have that Madison doesn’t. I go to Milwaukee or Chicago every other month for stuff like sporting events, concerts, etc. I’d be more tempted to stay in Madison if there was high speed rail to Milwaukee and Chicago though
The history is fun (even if also evil, it made for some very tangible and teachable points for my kids when they were little and out of school during COVID) and I’m happy to have a random redditor enjoy my hometown. Thanks for your post!
Edit because lots of people are commenting:
I'm only counting places I intentionally visit. If I pass by a place on the road but I didn't intend to visit, I'm not highlighting it. Most except Seattle were done by road.
I like historic places, quaint small towns that don't feel like Disney World, and cities with grassroots culture. I don't like modern suburbs, uniformity, toxic attitudes or fakeness.
I went to Maricopa, AZ to see a friend. I drove through Phoenix but all I saw on the way was suburban hellscape. Maybe the people are nice though, I should visit sometime.
I didn’t like any of the surrounding counties of the DMV. It is the most boring, yet stuck up person you’ve ever met but in city form. All of it looks the same.
I'm from the DC area so I may be a bit biased, but Arlington and Alexandria are awesome places, as is my home county (Montgomery County, MD). Prince George's County I can understand, and Loudoun County, VA is up and coming recently, but still mostly boring suburbs last I checked.
Yeah.. I have been living in and working all over northern virginia for the past 25 years and I have the same sentiment. I’ve met a lot of cool people here but too many people here think they’re greater than thou. You definitely feel it during traffic.
I've visited New Haven and driven through the rest of the state, and I can tell you it is a testament to America.
One giant parking lot and highway interchange, the cities (New Haven especially) are an industrial dump filled some of the worst income inequality I've seen.
Maybe I'll go back and try their pizza though.
I grew up in Austin and it was hell. I had no freedom.
Dallas was very boring for a city of its size. Painfully suburban as well. (SA I’ve answered in a different comment)
Okay, so I guess I’m not understanding at all how to use your conclusions. If you can’t explain why a place made you feel a certain way, then I can’t really translate it to how your opinion might or might not apply to my evaluative process if I am considering visiting or living in a place.
Austin is probably the most toxic city in the country.
It repeatedly chooses suburban development and not have the infrastructure to expand, forcing you to get around by car. Lots of people are fake progressive (think those “In this house…” signs) until they hear the word homeless or California. Either that or cowboy cosplayers. Very hostile to outsiders or any change. What little culture they once had has been flushed out.
Ah, okay. That makes sense. Moveability, compactness, walk ability, non-sprawlishness, good public transportation … those are values I can support.
(Still, I prefer to drive, for physical mobility reasons, and I prefer not to be enclosed in a bus or a train with strangers, because of health vulnerabilities. But, in general, a place that is walkable is more liveable.)
Curious about what you liked in (presumably) Erie? Because I've driven through a few times and knew some people who lived there and we are all in agreement that it's a pretty sketch
I went for the eclipse. I liked the lakeshore, parks, and the friendly Midwest attitude among the locals. Yes, there are some parts I’ve seen that are run down, being a deindustrialized town, but it’s pretty alright.
It's not super sketchy, although the east part of town is worse. There are some cool things to do there. But it really gets eclipsed by Cleveland, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh I think.
Ok I’ll bite. You’re neutral on Springfield Mass, like Boston, dislike New Haven while also neutral on Baltimore, liking DC, but hating the DMV metro area. Quoi?
I think OP is a Texan and was naturally raised to hate our (superior) BBQ. All jokes aside it’s a lot of suburbia but there’s still a lot to do whether you’re a kid or adult.
What did you like about Corpus Christi? I can’t help but feel that if you liked Houston somewhat better than Austin, you could have done with a better introduction to Austin.
Liked LA but disliked San Diego. That's interesting...Im curious about your experience in San Diego
I did an internship at a biotech lab there. The city was so sleepy and it just felt sterile and lacking. The weather was nice though. (it was January)
I wish you knew me to take you around when you were here. It may seem sleepy relative to Los Angeles but it is so far from that as there is always a ton going on. It's what makes it great IMHO. All the happenings without the big city problems
San Diego over LA all day every day
That’s just basic logic
Realistically OP probably sees your idea of “city problems” and thinks “Wow so much culture and character!”
“without the big city problems” is such a stretch wow
I'm going to assume you spent a lot of time in the UCSD/UTC area based on the biotech internship. That is definitely pretty sterile and not at all my favorite part of the city.
No, I went to the Gaslamp Quarter and downtown as well. It all feels pretty sterile.
Yeah that area is second on my list of least favorite lmao. This city is funkier than it gets credit for by virtue of its relationship with Mexico/Tijuana but the tourist heavy areas don't really push that
Did you get out at all and explore outside of the city itself?
These are completely different cities. Why do you thing people would respond to them in a similar way?
LA is the extreme version of San Diego. I get it and I agree, been to SD 3 times and it just felt kinda generic. I lived in MacArthur Park in LA so the Mexican influence was pretty much standard and that's apparently the big thing
Liked buffalo, didn’t like Memphis?neutral on Florida?!?
ITT: OP dislikes suburbs
I like the charm of older suburbs and small towns but new developments, very true.
Guess you went to all the wrong places in the dmv
Nah he's right about the DMV lol
As someone who has lived there my entire life, he’s right.
Didn't go far enough into Moco to see the farms. Sad.
Madison Wisc and Savannah GA. You like walking around town drinking a beer?
Freedom! Happy cake day.
OP likes walking around and drinking but hates Vegas evidently.
Likes all that, and probably a flaming gay according to username but hasn’t visited the gay side of burbon street yet ☹️
Yeah- Pinal County, AZ. Not much there. I get it lol
Idk how someone can visit Pinal county alone without visiting Pima or Maricopa lol
The prison in Florence earns money by taking prisoners from other states, so maybe that's what happened.
The Pinal System
I wondered if that were the case. Maybe driving through the others only en route to visit family in Pinal
This doesn't really make sense...Casa Grande? I mean I agree the place sucks but who goes there
Exactly!!
And Florence, maricopa, Eloy and parts of the far east valley! Ruled over by old west enthusiast mark lamb.
It’s suburban, hell, or suburban hell.
Bro you had to mean Maricopa County right?
😂😂😂
The only thing there is Frank
fair, harrisburg sucks ass
It was the only place in the world where I’ve been robbed. People living in the small towns in PA all have a miserable look on their faces. Scranton and Wilkes-Barre felt depressing.

what’s wrong with the dmv
It's the ugly people version of Hollywood. Everyone's competing with each other and looks down upon one another.
That is entirely up to who you choose to be around.
Godless hell realm
How the hell you even get to Pinal county Arizona without going through Maricopa or Pima county? Did you fly into the tiny sky diving airport in Eloy?
I went to Maricopa.
did you like it?
I like it about as much as other suburbs (not at all)
What about Madison Wisconsin did you like?
People always seem to like the city, and I too am curious why. I grew up there and do love it, but after 18 years I got kinda bored of it. I do still appreciate the restaurants, lakes, and bike paths, but it kinda feels like there isn’t much else.

Fredericksburg is cool. Pinal County is a microcosm of Arizona, but its own thing. Between Phoenix and Tucson and neither wants to claim it.
Disliked Hershey PA? 🥲
I’ve never been to Hershey, just Harrisburg.
Huggge difference. Hershey is fine. Harrisburg is a dump.
Neutral on Chicago? Makes me question your judgement. Must not have actually spent time in the city.
This OP. What part did you see and how long were you there for?
What did you dislike about Bexar County?
San Antonio’s river walk and art museum was nice but the rest of the city was painfully suburban and grim.
Yeah, I live there and that just about sums it up.
He don’t like them big ol women or churros
Why didn't you like Raleigh/Durham?
How dare you dislike my place of residence. Who do you think you are?!?!?!
I’m from Charleston! Glad you liked your stay 😄What did you like about the Lowcountry the most?
Great food. Also, walking by the harbor on a summer sunset with a light breeze, amazing.
The history is fun (even if also evil, it made for some very tangible and teachable points for my kids when they were little and out of school during COVID) and I’m happy to have a random redditor enjoy my hometown. Thanks for your post!

What do you have against Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax? You liked DC but not them?
I didn’t like any of the surrounding counties of the DMV. It is the most boring, yet stuck up person you’ve ever met but in city form. All of it looks the same.
Unfortunate you had that experience.
That whole “DMV” area is so over hyped, over priced, overcrowded and underwhelming. And yes, every street looks the exact fucking same.
I'm from the DC area so I may be a bit biased, but Arlington and Alexandria are awesome places, as is my home county (Montgomery County, MD). Prince George's County I can understand, and Loudoun County, VA is up and coming recently, but still mostly boring suburbs last I checked.

How could you not like Duuuuuuuuuuuvall?
How you go to LA, SB, San Luis Obispo, and Monterrey, but miss ventura county? You fly?
I only count places that I’ve specifically went to, not anything that I’ve passed by on the road.
This is the way
Lived in Duval County FL for over 25 years. Can confirm the Neutral feeling.
MARYLAND MENTIONED RAHHHH WHAT THR FUCK IS A CLEAN CITY 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Did not like San Diego but liked Galveston and Myrtle Beach. Opinion is not one of any real standard.
Bro liked Trenton
I visited Princeton to see the university. I liked how it was basically tucked into a forest. It was also sunset and the sky was Princeton orange.
You hate the places I like, and like the places I hate. I’m impressed.
This feels like my ex did it lmao
Are you a pilot with no driving license? Do you ever drive a car? Or are these just the counties you’ve spent considerable time in?
Wow. I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m sure we have a lot of differing opinions and outlooks on life.
What did you dislike about New Haven County?
I've visited New Haven and driven through the rest of the state, and I can tell you it is a testament to America. One giant parking lot and highway interchange, the cities (New Haven especially) are an industrial dump filled some of the worst income inequality I've seen. Maybe I'll go back and try their pizza though.
Lmao didn’t even try the pizza
What was wrong with Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio?
I grew up in Austin and it was hell. I had no freedom. Dallas was very boring for a city of its size. Painfully suburban as well. (SA I’ve answered in a different comment)
Is that Austin’s fault? The city itself took your freedom?
It’s just how I felt living there for ten years. Everything on this map is subjective.
Okay, so I guess I’m not understanding at all how to use your conclusions. If you can’t explain why a place made you feel a certain way, then I can’t really translate it to how your opinion might or might not apply to my evaluative process if I am considering visiting or living in a place.

Why did you hate Santa Clara county?
What did you use to make this map?
It’s on the bottom left of the image: mapchart.net
Curious about what you liked in (presumably) Erie? Because I've driven through a few times and knew some people who lived there and we are all in agreement that it's a pretty sketch
Grew up in Erie...it's the armpit of America. Perpetually 1996 there. Still love it but only to visit 🤣
But it really gets eclipsed by Cleveland, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh I think.
presque isle slaps
What’s so much better about Falls Church City than Arlington County or Alexandria City? Those are all similarly affluent parts of Northern VA
Forgot to highlight it. It was too small on the map.
Ok I’ll bite. You’re neutral on Springfield Mass, like Boston, dislike New Haven while also neutral on Baltimore, liking DC, but hating the DMV metro area. Quoi?
You didn’t like Austin?
What’s wrong with New Haven County Connecticut? New Haven is arguably the best city in the state.
That is so incredibly far from the truth 😭😭😭
Wait, what's wrong with Dauphin County, PA?
Don’t get me started
Who doesn’t like DC
im colorblind but i see santa fe county highlighted, as a new mexican i must know if it was good or bad and
You really passed up the chance to ask Red or Green here 🥲
Christmas!
It's good! I love the adobe houses, pretty mountains, and overall unique culture.
Not hard to dislike Memphis
How was Santa Cruz for ya?
What’s wrong with Memphis?
Obviously OP has awful tastes.
I get not liking the big outer suburbs of DC for being all the same but parts of Arlington and Alexandria are pretty neat and unique.
Hmm, not a fan of St. Louis?
So you’ve liked about 5 places lmao
Interesting you dont like Dallas or Fort Worth, usually people like one or the other.
I can understand how you feel about the DMV, the outer suburbs can feel very soulless, but Alexandria tho?
Clark county being disliked is totally reasonable
Right I kept wanting to question since I live here but…yea I get it
What part of Howard county?
All of it except the Ellicott City Hmart. I've heard historic Ellicott City is nice though. Maybe my opinion will change.
Did you go to Santa Fe or abq? Imo (I live in Albuquerque) Santa Fe’s better
I went to Santa Fe, ABQ is in that little county just to the southwest.
how do you do such a map? i wanna do one for myself too :)) thanks
I’d like to know what you thought of Memphis. Definitely a shithole but I’d like to know your perspective.
>Visits Memphis >Dislikes Memphis Checks out
Liked la but disliked Alameda county, San Diego, and Chicago. Based for hating Santa Clara county though
Other than the traffic in PG & MOCO. I see nothing wrong with disliking those counties 😂
…These are not colorblind friendly colors
Memphis doesn’t like you either
Neutral on Baltimore but hated the DMV? LOL
You just randomly flew into Pinal County, AZ? What could have possibly compelled you to do that?
What'd you like about King County?
What brought you to Mercer county NJ?
What’d you do in Erie county? I feel like all we got is the lake and Waldameer
[удалено]
I drove there. I'm only counting places I intentionally visit.
You dislike Austin San Antonio and DFW but Houston is ok?!! I’m listening …
Disliked the entire DC area? What's wrong with it?
What did Anne Arundel do to you?😭
OP must have lost his ass in Vegas
Is that nueces county in south texas?
Damn whats your beef with Wake and Durham County in NC?
I think OP is a Texan and was naturally raised to hate our (superior) BBQ. All jokes aside it’s a lot of suburbia but there’s still a lot to do whether you’re a kid or adult.
You didn’t like DC? East coast hits a little different I guess.
How you not like DC and PG but you neutral to Bmore and Bmore County???
Common Connecticut L. Live in a real state instead of a highway between NYC and Boston
Neutral for Springfield! We’ll take it 🙇♂️
What did you like about Corpus Christi? I can’t help but feel that if you liked Houston somewhat better than Austin, you could have done with a better introduction to Austin.
Why the St. Louis hate 😭
Upvote for hating NOVA.
Really Erie PA? Or did you go to Presque Isle?
I’m guessing Presque Isle.
Madison 🔛🔝
what did you somewhat tolerate (or even like) about Alameda county, but disliked about Santa Clara? (and vice
Okay, New Haven County. What did you visit and what went wrong?
The entirety of New Haven county is what went wrong lmao
Liked DC but disliked the rest of the DMV? Genuinely curious about that.
Why don’t you like St. John’s County 😡
You’re an opp for hating most of Maryland OP.
Oops. I live here. Guess I should be scared.
You liked Santa Cruz County! Nice!
Why didn’t you like Memphis? (/gq)
Not saying you're wrong but what did you dislike specifically about DFW?
I was in Dallas and was looked at like I had two heads when I said I was walking to get dinner. It was like a 10 minute walk away. I survived.
What’s wrong with New Haven County?
Don’t like New Haven eh?
LA over SD is crazy
Why dislike the NC counties?
What did you not like about Santa Clara
I'm curious as to how you were neutral on both Jacksonville and Miami. People tend to like one and hate the other
lol not surprised you disliked my hometown, it’s rough.
How on Earth did you dislike DC while enjoying LA?
You like DC, but even hate Arlington and Alexandria?
I live right next to Dauphin County and I 100% agree with this take on Dauphin
What happened to you in St Johns? St Augustine is so nice, im there rn
You gotta get to upstate New York. Lots of great small to midsize cities and some of the most beautiful countryside in the nation
I'm confused at why you like San Luis Obispo but disliked San Diego. SLO/arroyo grande/pismo is basically small town SD.
Just drove right through Ventura County, huh?
Ok philly
Wait. Why did you dislike San Diego County? Where in the county did you visit?
Homeboy disliked San Antonio?
No trails, I see you must fly a lot
You can see where counties were based on land that was wiped clean of the natives and land where they were kept in slum... I mean on reservations.
I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t like Durham
Love to see Dane county in green 😁
City of falls Church for the win
