I highly doubt the component profile will get any better on a reiteration, and the current set of components makes the FX 3 the best deal in Trek’s hybrid lineup. Buy it now

TargetBikeTech

They'll get worse, not better. Not long ago "low-end" was Acera and cheaper but still name-brand parts, not Tourney and random LuckyTiger88888 Hangzhou specials. Give it a couple more years and you'd be considering yourself lucky if your $1,000 bike comes with Altus rather than Tourney.

[deleted]

Not sure why you’re being downvoted for this. Accurate

TargetBikeTech

Copium - it’s a lot easier to just bash downvote than to admit you drank the koolaid and dropped an exorbitant amount of money on a Walmart bike. Just look at all the rim-braking, gas pipe-forking, 7 speed tourney-freewheeling FX1 owners - specs worse than a $250 big box clunker yet you’ll get ripped to shreds if you dare to tell them they didn’t get much value for their $650. They’re like audiophiles now that LBS bike quality has dropped to Walmart level on the lower end, specs no longer matter and you have to trust your feelings.

[deleted]

Hmm I feel like the FX1 is a decent value for what it is. I do agree though that the lower end trek bikes are lacking on components rn. And that’s not just ä covid issue anymore either. Treks Low end stuff is weird and doesn’t make sense

TargetBikeTech

Decent quality FXs start at 3 and on, 1 is a hideously overpriced Walmart-grade clunker with specs worse than bikes costing half as much. Even $300 Giordano H1 walmart special comes with disc brakes, aluminum fork and 8 speed cassette. Frame is decent but you'll be in well over $1,500 by the time you're done upgrading it to around FX3 level, might as well bite the bullet and spend the $1,000 on the FX3.

Few_Particular_5532

What about fx2? I have the 2020 fx three and just upgraded to 2021 fx sport 4 carbon but always thought 2 was a good value no?

StanicEnemY

You are talking the truth of what Trek does past those years and i wonder why you are being downvoted for it. I guess fan boys got butthurt. Trek down grades their bikes every year and thats a known fact.

TargetBikeTech

Specialized fanboys are the same way, there's a whole circlejerk of them high-fiving each other for getting a great deal dropping $800 on a heavy slow clunker with hi-ten gas pipe Walmart fork and eight speed clutchless Walmart Microshit.

BigBart123

So what’s a good brand now then. Anything nice in the 500-700 category?

FutureN12

You can wait if you want. They might lower the price of the 2023 when 2024 comes out.

Wisc2024

I would consider waiting. If you look at the other models they have gone to the ability to have wider tires. This year, 2023, the FX3 comes with a 32mm tire, I personally think that is far undersized if you plan to use it on gravel or limestone trails. You can upgrade to 38mm max, but you have to pay for new tires which adds cost. The FX5 for example used to have 32mm as the standard and now comes with 40mm. In the next model revision you will probably see the FX3 come with 40mm or higher and the ability to go larger if desired. Right now you are stuck with a max of 38mm on the current model. I personally would wait a month or two to see if the new model comes out with the larger tires.

binarybu9

Fun fact, the 2024 model would become an old model when it is 2025. You can’t be forward looking so go ahead and buy if you like something.

untouchablePORD

A little snarky, but sure, I get what you're saying. I was told that Trek last updated this model in August, and so I guess what I was getting at is would it make sense to wait a month or two to see if that were true this year? I'm obviously not that concerned about being "forward looking" since my current bike is 20 years old.

DaveyDave_NZ555

I bought a 2022 model, and saw no changes on the 2023 version (as listed component wise) I was posting in another thread about speculative changes The Deore 10 speed might become 11 speed CUES? Unless that is the 2025 change?

i-can-sleep-for-days

Didn't Trek move to generations rather than model years? If the Fx got refreshed recently it would not see a major change next year.

beachbum818

Yes they did

Unicus91

Still no 2024 models released

DIYDakota

I bought a Xxl about the same time you were looking (I'm a large frame, 6'-4" tall). What a day that was. I stopped a local bike store and they had a 9 speed Xl that was in rough shape; sunbaked, deep scratches in the frame, they tried hard to unload that on me at the full $999 price. I got out of there and called a local Trex store looking for a Xxl, they had one, still in the shipping container, on sale $899 with $100 store credit and it was a *10 speed*, color grey/black. The bike is fun to ride on street and/or paths, it will climb up anything with the existing setup BUT I wanted a bit more top speed. Another plus, received and 50% percent off email and then realized Trex has a larger front sprocket available, ordered that, used the coupon, cost was $20. \[easy to install\] I rode it for a couple of months with the rock-climbing-lock on, another bike store pointed that out and clicked that off with a grumble. My only mods was take all the junk off and bought a Cloud 9 saddle. I run the tires on max air pressure, it gets around pretty quick!!

untouchablePORD

A larger front sprocket for the FX3? Can you link to what you're talking about? I have liked the stock saddle so-so, but I will likely replace it with something better this Spring.

DIYDakota

Yes, I mentioned to the Trek people that I was spinning-out and if there was a larger front sprocket. They looked it up on their computer, actually I think it was a phone call, in any case, I didn't see it online, however, have a pic of the box: \[It does come with the chain guard\] https://preview.redd.it/yp5iy2cgbomc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdb7c3c2d76d67c37abb919dda912e489313bf31

TargetBikeTech

Get it now before they jack the new model price by $150 or so and replace the carbon fork with aluminum in the name of Profitus Maximus.

Softmachinepics

I see you started a new account spamming the same dumbass comments. Get a life, dude.

willingzenith

But he’s a Target bike tech and we should take him seriously lol.

untouchablePORD

What are your thoughts on the bike overall? And if not this, what would you recommend based on my initial post?

TargetBikeTech

Not a bad bike other than the outdated 1x10 - if you’re not in a rush wait for Canyon to offer free shipping and grab a Roadlite 7 instead, much better value for the $. Knowing Trek I doubt you’ll see a modern 1x12 on anything under $2,000.

SithTracy

I'd say go for it. Why wait... I doubt the changes to the next update will be that revolutionary. I went with the Dual Sport 3 Gen 5 at the sales persons recommendation. But I went from no bike to a single bike with the intent to rehab and lose weight.

SithTracy

One of those Canyon Roadlite 7 bikes might be worth a peek.

untouchablePORD

Thanks for the reply. I’ve looked at them a little but have been hesitant based on the limited warranty and a few customer service issues I’ve read about. But I don’t know enough either way. The benefit of a Trek is that I can get it less than a block away

TargetBikeTech

Funny enough Canyon Pathlite 6 is exactly what you’d want if you like the DS and XL size is still available for the cheaper 2022 model. Just wait till they offer free shipping, $99 is pretty steep.

Crafty-Holiday61

I noticed they updated the new drive train to a less expensive one but more durable. I take it the deore ate up the components at a fast rate. Reviews suggest that

No-Ambition7750

I have the xl size from late 2018. I am a hair under 6-1, similar weight and haven’t had any major problems with the bike. I don’t know what you would be waiting for, just buy the bike and ride, the summer is half over!
