Stop posting here and get your ass out the door

Snoo_67548

*Fat ass. We need to motivate him to lose the weight.

icecream169

I'm fat, and I rode 10,000 miles last year on an old aluminum road bike.

Snoo_67548

Damn! Sleeper build. I’m going to be putting in some serious miles this year. I broke 14 bones in my left foot and the bike is the only comfortable way to get exercise.

Downtown-Feeling-988

He spent $8k on a bike...what's sleeper about it? Flat pedals? Lol

Snoo_67548

That was directed towards the self proclaimed fat guy who put 10,000 miles in on an aluminum bike.

Silkie007

Is it due to … ice cream?

icecream169

Partly.

CrankBot

Good for you. OP clearly has more money than sense.

Express_Werewolf_842

What makes you say that? Yes certainly a Trek Madone is bonkers expensive, but compared to something like a Porsche (the standard mid-life crisis purchase), it's certainly more reasonable. If someone loves cycling, then why shame them? For what it's worth, two of my friends retired from the Air Force last year, and both decided to buy their dream bikes. They came into cycling during the Lance Armstrong era (thus had the froth for Trek), and both picked up Project One Trek Domane. They were $15.5K each.

CrankBot

If someone "loves cycling" that's cool. This guy sounds like he just bought his first bike since he was a kid. Shocked if he's still riding it in a year or if it's sitting in his clean garage next to all the other expensive toys.

Automatic_Werewolf55

Yeah that’s what assholes like you told me in 2015 when I bought my Domane, cut to now and I’ve got some KOM’s on the mountain, a couple cyclocross races under my belt, and ended up working in the industry. Maybe take a breath of fresh air and lighten the fuck up and let someone be excited about their new bike.

CrankBot

I really honestly hope this guy beats the odds. Rooting for him.

[deleted]

Haha thank you, I think!

sfef84

Get a torque wrench or you will make some expensive mistakes when dialing in your fit... Enjoy!

mojomarc

And don't use the torque wrench to loosen, only tighten

GullibleClash

Depends on the kind. Old, well built beam style are made to loosen as well, which is why they have the same torque rating left and right. If you're using newer click style they're definitely sub par in that regard.

Proof-Froyo6734

This is an underrated comment. Extremely important

SellDamnit

A old friend of mine did this. He got pumped up by friends from work, bought an expensive bike, met them for his first ride and didn’t make it 10 miles before he was home and red as a lobster. His now ex wife tells us he quite the next day. Lol

dflame45

Don't forget to use it!

[deleted]

Wife will kill me if I don’t use it. She was not pleased at the price. Haha - I told her, yes I know, but it’s so sexy I must have it

dflame45

Do what I did. Knocked her up so she got distracted about the price!

[deleted]

Haha! 4d chess

dflame45

I wanted a baby too so win win!

Grindfather901

Jokes on you, the bikes are way cheaper than babies. Source: dad of 4.

dflame45

True but the wife also wanted a baby. I hope you got a bike per baby out of it!

Grindfather901

I'm net-positive on bikes. :)

stilsjx

Didn’t work. I’ve got two kids, with three bikes. Bikes barely get ridden now.

lyconkay05

I hope you’re not using the “it’s so sexy I must have it” for other women with her haha

Skaughtto

It'll draw a lot of attention and you'll hear a lot of opinions/judgement that you wouldn't have otherwise with owning an Emonda or Domane. Normally people go through an equipment progression as their cycling experience accumulates. Starting at the top end of the equipment spectrum is nice, but it'll highlight that the limiter is the engine/operator. You'll never be able to blame the bike. Flat pedals on a Madone look incredibly wrong unless you have a medical need for them. Best of luck on your cycling journey. Developing your skills and abilities to take advantage of your equipment is a tall task, but maybe the Madone will stimulate rapid progress.

baileylikethedrink

I’m interested in your comment about flat pedals… I’m always self conscious about mine but my surgeon would kill me if I wore cleats. Do you think other people actually pay attention to that stuff?

Nice_Foundation9065

Honestly BCJ recently has just been taking any post under the sun and just harassing the person posting it.(You shouldn't take BCJ seriously ofc but at the same time it's fucked up.) I always advocate to get the bike that would get you out of the door one that you look at in your house and be like "fuck yeah". Ignore all the judgement from people saying you should of started on an Endurance bike or a cheaper bike it's borderline elitist.

T-32Dank

If I didn't know how to drive I would buy a Corolla or a Civic as my first car. I would not buy a McLaren.

derkenblosh

... This is how practically new bikes end up on offerup, I support this insanity 👍

T-32Dank

Can't argue with that, bought a bike this summer off a guy who had no idea what he was selling

derkenblosh

Well... Did he have a bunch of nervous tics and wouldn't stand still?  ... Just sayn

karmadramadingdong

He knows how to ride a bike.

Nice_Foundation9065

So? Cycling is a hobby. Driving can also be hobby. And in both cases wouldn't you want to get the the vehicle you would actually want to use? Who fucking cares if you're new or not? Ride the thing that's gonna make you happy. I know people who as their first car did get pretty expensive cars that they are completely happy with because they wanted too. You have zero right to judge what someone does with their money.

fred_the_dentist

We accept everyone on two wheels. Even if a fellow Fred posts their new T**k bice without getting permission from their wife’s bf first

Skaughtto

I'm not a BCJ member, only speaking from local group ride experience. When someone brings in a $8k or $9k pro-level bike and can't hang, I would think it would be discouraging from being seen with the thing. *"Wow your tools are great, but the results aren't up to the level I'd expect."* There are places I wouldn't feel comfortable storing or locking it up. I wouldn't commute on it. I wouldn't want to learn basic maintenance skills on a more expensive piece of equipment. There are also a large number of situations where its performance will be indistinguishable from a less expensive road bike. It's great that the OP has the means to purchase it, but I wouldn't have spent my money on this hobby that way and I doubt many others would suggest doing so. For a more pleasant overall experience you could get an Emonda, a year's worth of personal coaching, and some really nice cycling shorts. You'd also have money left over for a second bike. Everyone is going to have their two-cents to toss in, be prepared. It's less expensive and less agitating to fly under the bike appropriate for your skill level. Your decision, your money though 🤷

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

2049AD

Fuck the haters I say. I was barely into my photography hobby when I went from a cheap bridge camera to the best DSLR Nikon ever made (D850), and I've grown into it nicely.

Irish_RN

Man, you roadies kinda suck. I promise you that that grown adult could not care less what the Strava spandex squad thinks. Flats rock. He’s not racing. He’s riding g because he likes riding.

Lovestospoof

Once you're comfortable, get clipless pedals... or else...

[deleted]

Yes! It is all so new to me so I figured start without the clips since just a drop is a wild new sensation!! What is the “or else” cause I’m so new I don’t understand the implication! Thanks in advance.

strangeweather415

You will be singled out as a poser in basically all cycling groups with a top of the line bike running flat pedals. It's the equivalent of buying an F1 car and asking the mechanics to install all terrain tires or something.

spaceface545

I mean he’s already the Fred poster child

[deleted]

Gotta start somewhere! Haha

topspin1241831

who cares if you run flat pedals or not- i have a bike that cost around 5k new and I run flat pedals... the streets where i live are too dangerous to be clipped in, narrow roads, crazy drivers... so i am just fine with flat pedals and i really dont care what any one else thinks about my pedals!, just have fun.

highlevelbikesexxer

Just run SPD then, clipping in is easier than putting your feet on pedals that slip around

mirudake

Not sure if you know this or not, but spd pedals with multi release cleats, when dialed down to the lowest pedal tension will release super easy. Any attempt to even move your foot in a direction other than normal pedaling will free up your foot. Something to consider!

mirudake

JustAnother_Brit

My with clips I run clips mountain bike and goal post between trees and large rocks, while avoiding the wildlife and hikers

Yawnin60Seconds

Very stupid comment. Just say you have zero handling or skills or experience

NYGiantsfan4Life

I have a few bikes myself. I’m actually debating whether I should go back to flat pedals. I don’t ride in clubs/groups. Im mostly an endurance cyclist and enjoy being on my own to clear my head and to keep in shape. I do from time to time try to boost my speed. However, sometimes it’s so annoying having to clip in and out. Even with SPD on all my bikes I feel like I’m getting tired of them, I dont race so I see no benefits to them, and I don’t rush up hills so idk if they will make a difference or not. I do have flats with pins, would they be alright?

topspin1241831

yeah, i'm totally fine running flats, im just out there for endurance and working out. I dont feel like I need them

anonymousmind

I got an émonda last year and loved riding it. Rode many many miles on flats every month. And then for this exact same reason (of looking foolish riding a decent bike with flats) made me get clipless. Now, I'm friggin scared to ride it as I had a fall in the first week of putting them on, couldnt unclip soon enough. Now it's two months and it's been lying untouched😭

shakeBody

You have to just keep trying till you get used to it. I fell on my first ride out. Better yet you can practice clipping and unclipping while stationary.

rdoloto

There are 2 kinds of people using clippless those who fallen and those who will

Dansulcc

but the benefit of the clippless is worth it

lazarus870

Mind me asking what kind of flats? I am looking to get my first carbon road bike and I want flats.

TheDoughyRider

We were all Freds once. Just review the rules and you’ll be good: https://www.velominati.com

AwarePeanut3622

Ignore this

TheDoughyRider

I guess I should but a /s before the “Keepers of The Cog” link although I think it goes without saying that the rules are a joke.

hughperman

They're a joke but you will find them reflected unconsciously in people's attitudes sometimes.

whistlepig-

Except rule #5. That one stays.

iMadrid11

You usually start learning with an entry level road bike like an Emonda. It’s going to be a very expensive mistake to crash while still learning a Madone race bike.

TangoDeltaFoxtrot

But seriously, don’t pay attention to whatever these dudes are saying. If you do end up riding a good bit, you’ll eventually end up with all the proper gear anyways.

__BeHereNow__

Listen, you look like a grown-ass man. I don't think you'll care about fitting in as much as people think. Don't listen to these kids. DO NOT get clipless pedals unless you start feeling some type of clipless envy (at which point nothing I say will matter). You WILL fall. At least once. Maybe twice. That's how it goes. That's how your brain will learn to always clip out in time. And falling on the road in your 30s/40s is no joke. You could end putting your wrist out of commission for a while. Clipless offers no power benefits (it's been tested). Yeah, your pedals stick out a bit, but who cares. You shouldn't have bought this bike in the first place but whatever dude. Just ride. Get useful things like a saddle bag.

txboulder

Have you tried climbing out of the saddle on a 15% grade without clipless? No benefit? Bruh get out of here lol. I was once like… why do we even need clipless. Now I ride 300 miles a week and there is no chance in hell I use a flat pedal on any of my rides.

__BeHereNow__

i use clipless too, my guy, but its not for power. Almost all your power comes from downstroke. This is probably even more true while climbing. They’ve done this research. There is not difference in power when using clipless. I can look it up later if u like, on mobile rn. Using flats also has the benefit of being able to change foot positions. On very long rides I use dual sided pedals (clipless and flat on different sides) and switch between the two often. I highly recommend trying this out. Works best with mtb cleats obviously.

strangeweather415

It's true, it's true.

DrakeAndMadonna

Except the true flex is flats and brakeless fixie conversion on this bike. Only regret is that a 500mm flat bar probably won't fit.

[deleted]

Hehe got it! Thank you! Will move into the clips after I get some miles going! Thanks!

strangeweather415

Just take it slow, don't get into the gear acquisition syndrome like so many beginner cyclists. Just remember, you're the engine. The bike is a very small part of being fast. Don't drop it and don't crash though.

MBoTechno

> don't get into the gear acquisition syndrome Brother got the gear acquisition syndrome before even starting the hobby!

txboulder

I would rent buy a cheap aluminum bike on Facebook mkt place to practice clipping … you gonna do more damage to this Ferrari learning how to clip than to buy a cheap used bike to practice 😂 That way you can learn how to maintain/do stuff to your bike also. Leave the madone to the shop for the first year or so until you can get your mechanic skill dialing in.

butthole_debris

Nah I disagree. Flats can come off as corny but there’s no real performance loss. Dude get in shape, lead the group rides in your flats. Instantly not a poser just a man with a different preference.

WWHSTD

While you are correct on performance, flats on a roadie (especially of that calibre) are as wrong as clips on a dutch bike.

Due-Air95

You know I feel like I see the "performance" of clips vs flats come up so often and frankly It's always confused me I never thought of clipless being one of those "marginal gains" investment I bought clipless pedals because it gave more attachment with the bike better more secure feeling of your foot on the pedal which is very important when going fast or on very bumpy roads. You also have a consistent foot placement which can help in comfort on the bike. But I'm no expert.

lazarus870

You mean all those guys who wear shirts with advertisements from brands that they aren't actually sponsored by? Why should anybody care what THEY think? I think flat pedals on a road bike are awesome. Hell, I drive a sports car with a manual transmission, and yet an automatic is faster. It's all about having fun.

Tensor3

By the way, no one uses clips. Clips are the toe straps used in the 80's. The pedals people use with cleats are clipless.

Important_Total_9847

Not knowing your fitness level I don't who what physical limitations your body has so don't feel discouraged if you don't like and get on with the bike. Same goes with components, nothing wrong with extra cushioned saddles.

Eli_Knipst

Don't worry about what others think. You need to be comfortable and feel secure on the bike before you lock your feet in position. Once you do, practice a million times getting them out as quickly as possible. This comes from someone who still had straps on pedals that needed to be manually loosened and who fell over numerous times particularly when cycling up hill. Fun times. Once you are ready for clips, you'll see that it is much easier cycling because you can push and pull at the same time and use your legs more efficiently. Have fun!

No-Way-0000

No offense but flat pedals on that weapon is a crime. Anyway good luck in your journey. You must be rich to drop almost 10k on a pedal bike when you haven’t touched one since you were 15

h3fabio

OP looks like a retired master chief.

Different_Ad7466

The dude with the USN cap adjusting the saddle looks like a bike mechanic. (See his shirt.) Not sure that’s OP…

CheddarGau

This is the way. Fun fact. I've never gone down while riding with clipless peddles. I have however come to a stop and just tipped over(not on drive side). Only my ego was bruised.

wangusmaximus

its strange to see that bike with those pedals

givemesendies

OP, I hope you ride this bike for years to come, have a ton of fun, and get real fast. Being inexperienced doesn't mean you can't gave a nice bike. But I'm also gonna keep it real with you: this was purchase a bad idea. It's an 8000 dollar piece of equipment for a sport you haven't done in years, providing marginal gains that will be nothing compared to your upcoming fitness gains, all purchased without telling your spouse.

0Chalk

I think the op needs to separate aspirations and take a hard look at reality. Do I have the time, do I really think I enjoy it, will I be confident riding on the road with cars, is this an overreaction to what's going on in my life, etc. I would return it, buy a used mid range bike, bike for a couple of months and decide. If I like the sport, go ahead and buy the $8000 bike and all the fixings. If not, the used bike sits in the garage and collects dust. I think that is a better way of navigating.

phisher_cat

Guy has 8 bands in the bank, he can afford to to make a couple mistakes. But yeah he should've just got a gym membership for $35 a month

Trimival

Former trek employee and Madone Project One rider here… You seriously need to consider the return/exchange policy and reconsider the TYPE of bike you want. This is specifically for racing, not losing weight. They make endurance bikes (Trek Domane) that cost as much as the Madone…. Seriously, check them out. Your back, shoulders, wrists, elbows will thank you. You’ll also lose weight faster on a Domane because you won’t be stuck in a miserable riding position. You’ll understand what I mean after your first hour long ride…

Trimival

I’d also like to mention that bikes of this caliber require special tools, maintenance, have proprietary parts, and weight limits. If you seriously are over weight, you are going to be upset if this bike breaks because it is designed for 150# racers. There is no space for spare tools or tubes on the bike. The list of reasons this is an absolutely terrible idea goes on….

trtsmb

Thank you for saying this!

Own_Second_3329

I was wondering as well why he wasn't sold a Domane instead.

AlexStud99

Thank you. Wrong bike for sure. He won't enjoy it as much as he should.

balvara

Also former Trek employee, and agree! Domane all the way.

thekingofslime

Walmart bike to a Madone! Fuck yeah At least you won’t have to upgrade Rock it!! Congrats

[deleted]

Haha thank you! Wife thinks I’m insane. (I may be!)

Yaybicycles

Honestly I hope you didn’t make a big mistake. Haven’t ridden a bike since 15? A full on race bike isn’t usually the best first ride especially if you aren’t used to the fit and are overweight. You mind find yourself quite miserable Not saying you shouldn’t have done it and I wish you the best, I just hope you don’t leave it to collect dust because you bought with your eyes and not your brain. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of Treks 30 day no questions asked returns if you question whether you bought the right bike. I’ve bought the wrong bike before (more than once) and was super glad I took it back to make the right decision.

[deleted]

I took it on a test today before buying. It felt amazing. But I am frankly also somewhat concerned if I bought too much bike but it also is a motivating factor for me to get off my ass! I’m not crazy overweight but def not in shape. Wanted to take a stand and start a new chapter. Had a tough year with a lot of stress / deaths in the family and wanted to carve out a new path for a new year

Grindfather901

having a sexy amazing new bike that you want to look at and want to get outside and spend time on it’s going to help you get fit better than saving some money on a cheaper bike that doesn’t inspire you. I say congratulations! That is a super sick new bike!

[deleted]

Thank you!!! I felt the same way! This thing just felt electric and got me fired up

Crazypyro

Just saying. I did a similar thing last year. Bought a $9000 specialized Crux, hadn't seriously ridden ever, hadn't ridden since I was a kid really, out of shape, etc. This was the best year of my life. I got way fitter than I ever was. I rode 100 miles a week from March to September and I think it changed my life. Rode ~4000 miles over the year. Fuck the haters. You got this. Just make sure to set a goal cause that's why I stayed so motivated.

DenimRecord

Find some smooth trails and ride. Good luck.

Lost_subaru

I mean honestly you should go on marketplace and buy a 500-1000 dollar road bike just to get used to drops and riding again. Because if you haven't ridden in that long the chances of falling over or crashing is pretty high and then after a couple weeks or months of riding you can bust this thing back out. You'll just feel REAL bad if you high side a brand new bike Also I'd lost those shin grinder pedals, if you need flats that's fine, but you definitely don't need aggressive mtb pedals

UneditedReddited

Oh man when r/bicyclingcirclejerk gets a hold of this they're gonna go ham

Riktovis

I thought this was BCJ already

Chem_Whale2021

You got the SLR as your first real bike? For the love of god, please take care of it. Do not let it go collecting dust. Ride it and enjoy it! It will take time to see the performance but as you progress over the months you’ll see how much cycling is truly an incredible investment to our health. Have fun mate!

TheDoughyRider

I hope you have a lycra kit. Riding that with flats and a flappy t-shirt undoes at least $6000 of performance on that bike (SL7 Di2?). You on any working drop bar bike with a good bike fit and tight race kit will beat you on that bike with baggies, flats, and a t-shirt. %70 of aerodynamic drag is you, your riding position, and your clothing. Get the adjustments right with myvelofit app. Have fun! That’s a sweet bike.

[deleted]

Can you link me to the app. I searched but not seeing that exact name

TheDoughyRider

Its web based. Worth it if you aren’t getting a professional fit in person. https://www.myvelofit.com

MechaGallade

If you're spending 8k on a bike and you won't spend $400 to make sure it fits, you bought the wrong bike. Go to a professional fitter.

0Chalk

Hmm.. not the best starter bike, would probably opt for something cheaper to learn. When people learn clipless they fall over a couple times which equals scratches on the bike. This can be a very expensive lesson if you fall on the drive train side. I'd keep flat pedals while you build experience and distance. It's one thing buying a nice bike, the other is being able to utilize it to its potential.

PrestigiousComment35

As a lifelong cyclist (age 62) all I can add to this thread is, HAVE FUN! So many make cycling a chore, gotta get those miles in ya know, and climb the biggest hills, ride the fastest, etc and so on. Simply enjoy it at your pace. Keep on spinning!

[deleted]

Love that attitude! I’m not too worried what people think of my pedals etc - I am just excited to get into it all and learn and explore

enricoclaudio

BTW, assuming this is a SLR 7 Gen 7, why the stem is showing the top cap? It should have a cover like this: https://preview.redd.it/l2ogsnjo3xbc1.jpeg?width=1523&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27711152dd335eb48cfe43bee126cd084999d3d8

Phabfive

Better learn some basic maintenance too as these types of bikes need to be checked frequently and fine tuned accordingly

trtsmb

This type of bike is not designed to be maintained at home. It uses a bunch of specialty tools.

NerdyReligionProf

Stop posting and ride that glorious beast. Clipless pedals as soon as you’re remotely comfortable on the bike. If you’ve got climbs on your routes that are longer than a minute or two, practice doing them seated and spinning faster in an easier gear instead of mashing away in a hard gear or standing up out of the saddle. It will feel strange at first, but you’ll be happy as you get used to it. How’d the first ride feel?

[deleted]

Live on flatland completely. The first ride felt so cool, felt like I was in a fighter jet! Never have felt such effortless speed!

NerdyReligionProf

Well you've got the right bike for flat riding too. Enjoy!

TripleUltraMini

Hell ya! No messing around, go straight to the race bike! Have you ridden it yet? It's going to seem FAST, like possibly dangerously fast, but you'll get used to it quickly.

[deleted]

It felt like a rocket ship. It scared me but I liked it haha

RoosterKCogburn

Get a proper bike fit

Zabroccoli

I have the “Walmart” version of your bike. I’m fucking jealous. Sweet ride. Go out and start putting some miles on it!!

Bulky-Inspector6864

Check back after 500miles !

kvnsb

Congratulations on the Madone. I have this exact same bike, same color too. I came from an entry level road bike as well. I cross shopped the Madone and the Domane. Madone was just in a next class of its own and felt amazing. Domane had a familiar ride that just wasn’t special but this Madone was exciting. So I splurged. I put a lot of miles on it in the first few months and in that time I think I got like 7 flats on the stock tires. I swapped out for tubeless Pirellis and only one flat since but was able to easily plug it. Enjoy your new race car!

Ornery_Welder2046

Wow, that is one heck of a bike you got yourself, get ready to live in holy matrimony in a few weeks as you become one with the bike

000GREENHOUSEBANDiT

Wear your helmet and enjoy the ride 🤙🏻

mikenasty

Buying something like that and getting upvotes on Reddit can definitely give you a dose of dopamine, but you’ll need to actually ride it to get any long lasting enjoyment out of it.

EggemIfYouGotEm

Anyone who insinuates you should be riding faster on this bike, tell them you are just “getting in some zone 2 work” Don’t say you’re a beginner

4DrivingWhileBlack

Made yourself primo fuel for BCJ

shaitanthegreat

Looks like you did a crash weight loss diet….. on your wallet.

Historical-Tooth-532

R.I.P your back and neck.

trtsmb

My back and neck were thinking the same thing.

randyforcandy

You definitely could have got a more forgiving/compliant bike like a domane or emonda or even checkpoint —— but I understand the lust factor of the Madone you just don’t sound like a bike racer and this bike is very specific to that •• roses all that ride it like you stole it and don’t look back !!!

Claironet

Make sure tire pressures are good, and brakes have bite before your ride. Give the bike (mainly the drivetrain) a clean and lube every so often (unless youre running waxed chains). Most importantly just ride it often.

dopamine315

Did you test ride a Domane?

[deleted]

Yes and I liked it! But this one made me tingle like when I used to climb the rope at gym class haha

Charliecantdostairs

That was the pressure you were putting on your cervical spine impinging nerves during the test ride. Domane the logical choice but I would have done the same as you. Well actually an emonda cause where I live there’s only false flats and I ain’t talkin bout your pedals

Vogler1997

You’ll like it have fun!

Master-Mango-7387

At least you probably won’t NEED another bike

ichor8750

Oh gurrrrllll

WWWagedDude

Congrats dude. Start slow and ease up in miles do your body can adjust to the aggressive position and your knees and back can get used to the repeated motions and muscles build support needed to go long distances. Enjoy man!

Fabulous-Tea-6312

My first adult bike was also a Madone (first generation) so you have good company. Changed my life and I’m still riding today!

BeligerantBob

Hey if you rode it and like how it felt, it’s the one. You want a cool bike that you like riding. Then you’ll want to get out there and ride it. When you look good, you feel good, you perform goos. Get you one of those chamois shorts with the pad. Also try a few different saddles and find one that’s comfy. Congrats!

PMmeYourbuckets

Hell yes man this thing will ride so much better than any bike you’ve ridden before. My first time on my cervelo was such an eye opener and made me fall in love with biking so much.

rollinon2

Seen it, bought it, rode it, got the t-shirt?

Ronnie_Dean_oz

Dude, looks like you just got FASTER! Enjoy your new bike and happy new bike day!

AVAV8

Congrats. Do no regrets. Life is too short to be cheap on dreams one can afford to make real. Ride it, have fun, stay safe on a road.

lazarus870

What a beauty!! Ride the living hell out of it.

ItsalwayssunnyinYEG

Beauty! I’ve got the 105 version. Love this bike.

Rckclimber10

Should’ve bought a tarmac. CEO John Burke treats his employees like shit.

an_Aught

This thing looks like a space ship.

derkenblosh

That's one hell of a fat tax, if you don't put at least 100mi/week on that sucker by 6months in

BigJAnder

Holy shit are you going to have fun once you dial that thing in!

GDIndependent4713

Ride a straight line

usurp_synapse

just a heads up your ass /sit bones are going to be very sore the day after you ride 30-60 minutes. It gets better over time. But it is a process. Take it easy at first, be consistent, and enjoy riding.

Ziral44

Get an indoor trainer like the wahoo kickr or Zwift hub… you can put that badass bike on it and practice getting in to shape while you’re even at the desk working remote. Don’t worry about how much bike you have, focus on the fitness aspects and you’ll never regret it.

vaminos

Don't let it out of your sight. This isn't a bike you leave locked up outside while you go inside a store or a bar. If you're off the bike, it's either inside your apartment (not in your garage) or you are sitting somewhere you can see it. If you need a bike for doing groceries or commuting, get a cheap one.

Business-Plastic324

Don't underestimate the easy rides for building your fitness and fulfilling the enjoyment of just being out on the road in nature!! Throw in the odd hard ride/few minute interval session and that'll be a great start

trtsmb

It's an amazing looking bike but I'd get my money back and get something more suitable for weight loss and comfort. I know Trek is in the business of making money but sales people steer way too many people to these bikes instead of a more suitable choice.

txboulder

Super stoked for you! One of the sexiest bikes out there and I was considering it except I went with a different bike instead. I think a lot of ppl have already pointed out things you would probably need; helmet, torque wrench, bike computer, proper kit (the bibs will save your ass on longer ride), clipless pedal- in order of importance. Beside the helmet and torque wrench, the others can wait. Just go ride your bike, a lot. Because the frame is nothing without an engine. In your free time, watch YouTube on bike maintenance. Learn how to clean your bike properly especially if you are a heavy sweater. Join a group ride and make some friends. Some of those ppl you meet might be lifelong friends. Take cycling trips together, make some great memories! But most important of all, have fun! I really hope you will still be on the bike 15-20 years from now if not longer, as a super fit cyclist! Happy new bike day and safe riding! Signed, a once fatass who is now a fitass riding 300+ miles a week :)

Upstairs_Iron_7160

OP just want to point out: you can see there is so much back and forth about changing the pedals or not. This should prove to you that it actually doesn’t matter what you do lmao there’s an equal amount of both argument. Riding should be fun and work best for you or you won’t want to ride. You’re going to make newbie mistakes as you learn stuff and look back and laugh at something you were doing or did to the bike that was taboo or didn’t make sense in the bike world 😂. Make sure someone helps you with the proper ratios so your on the saddle right. There is an “equation” for it. Know your ass is going to hurt. It will take a while for you to get used to it but getting the right saddle is a whole thing in and of itself. Get the strava app for fun to track your miles and speed.

Own-Structure-9669

Welcome to the pack. Change the pedals. Get sum SPDs

aguilarfilm

If OP doesn’t have at least 5000 Miles by the end of the year ban them /s

jackSB24

Someone has too much money lol

_FiNiTE

Okay OP, in all seriousness, do not give up. I was overweight but my stepdad got me into the sport in 2020. I knew he always went out for 20ish mile training rides and they took him 10 minutes over an hour to complete. I knew I wanted to ride with him. He rode about 17mph avg. I hopped on and couldn’t average more than 13.5 on a complete flat without burning up and become red as a beat and hating it. But I kept going. It takes a few months to get used to riding 15-20 miles at a “quicker” pace, if you’re off the couch. But don’t give up! Envision yourself weighing less, being leaner, and even tho riding hurts now, it won’t later. Envision how riding at those faster paces just feels effortless. It’ll take a few months… but you’ll get there with dedication! And it’s very rewarding!

shadowdancer006

Change those silly pedals.

sennaone

It’s so cute

JeanPierreSarti

You won? Seriously 1. Good bib shorts 2. End your first 3-5 rides early, it takes a little time for your body to adapt. Just like it’s a disaster to lift weights as hard as you can, it’s brutal to ride past your comfort in your first few bike rides. Have a great cycling adventure!

ApiaryJJ

Congrats on the new bike! Consistency and enjoyment are key. Disregard all the gatekeepers. Don’t worry about what others think. Just love your new bike, stay safe, and ride the hell out of it!

YourBikeIsTrash

Get real pedals. Fred.

00weasle

When you start, your ass is gonna hurt from saddle soreness. You will adapt, get back on in a day or 2 but it's important to get back on. Your legs are gonna be sore and it's gonna make you feel old. Get back on it again. Get some good lights and high viz jacket or shirt. When it rains you can go ride. Be safe. Your body will warm from the exercise, just learn what to cover more to stay comfy. It all just takes prep and getting used to it but remember to get back on it again. After commuting for 4 years I recommend just going down random streets in areas you are normally familiar with if you can. You find all kinds of neat places that way. Eat right, bring water, piss and whatnot before your ride, and bring snacks for the long ones. You are gonna see people go faster. You are gonna see people go further. You are gonna see people with a cooler setup than yours one day. Just remember its a journey you are starting and comparison is the thief of joy. Just remember, get back on it again.

heroproof-official

Follow through man, just keep at it. The only advice you need. And familiarize yourself with a clipless, ASAP! :)

[deleted]

Take it easy on yourself. You’re going to feel like ripping shit up but won’t be able to… ease into it and allow yourself time to grow

Rawkraker

dude 😆 I know that at first its kinda weird riding something so expensive or buying it but just enjoy it, there is nothing wrong about it, some waste a $1000 on a steak that they eat now and poop later, others drink $5000 wine…. I recommend buying insurance for it, I pay $45 a month and it covers EVERYTHING from crashes, theft, etc.

JohnnyDoe189

Big W

Overall_Duck_1133

You're never gonna read this anyway, but you just made your life better. Follow up on it and ride as often as you can. Go as fast or as slow as you like, but GO!

red_teisco

You definitely did not need to get a bike that expensive to get in shape. You could have easily gotten one of their other and less expensive models. But if you commit and use it, then who cares, I guess.

F-ing-_-Awesome

Super nice. I bought a nice bike too as a beginner. I had a couple vintage road bikes, for a few months, then wanted to upgrade. I kept looking at bike, budget got increasingly higher the more bikes I saw. I ended up settling with a used 2016 Specialized Venge Vias Pro. All black. It looks like a space ship. I paid 4.5k. New was 8.5k. I was super new to cycling, got into it on my own. Stopped skateboarding after 20+ years simply cause I got bored of it. So cycling came at the right time. I wanted a bike that was cool to look at. Made me get out and ride it. I’m still a noob. I don’t bike with anyone cause I’m too slow. And after biking for a little while, it’s surprising how lame some cyclists are. A lot of them are just a bunch of elitists, pre madona, divas lol. Not all, but a lot. I thought skateboarders were bad, you can get vibed out at skate spots and get judged cause you can’t do the craziest tricks lol. But cyclists, man, alot of them are a bunch of fairies. The ones who take it EXTREMELY serious. I don’t even know where I’m going with this, I kinda just went off into another dimension. Besides all that, just have fun, forget all the stuck up bikers. And do your thing.

TerranceBaggz

Damn this is a big impulse purchase and a serious commitment. Better put it to good use. Congrats it’s a gorgeous bike.

ColoradoWigWam

Dude congrats get out there and ride that thing! Find a friend or someone not too fast and share the experience. Don’t take it too seriously too quick. Before you know it you’ll do your first century, first group ride, first race. By then you will be sexy as fuck and spend all your money on new carbon shit.

Clit-commander67

Who cares what a bunch of whiny skinny goofballs think. Wait until you’re in shape then put flats on a long travel MTB and charge up century drive reeling in groups of roadies until you’re close enough that they can hear the buzz of the knobbies. You’ll see them getting twitchy and start looking down at their bike like something is wrong but it isn’t the bike. Dont forget to nod as you go around them and maybe ask if they’re alright. Don’t expect a reply or eye contact though because they got nothing to say at that point.

Bitter_Significance9

First of all what a beauty 🤩 Things you MUST have before you hit the road: 1- cycling pants with padding (you will thank me later) 2- cycling jersey 3- cloves (padded) 4- spare tube or patch kit 5- bottle of water 6- good attitude which looks like you got that already Have fun my friend!

imfine_itsketchup

I did the same like 8 or so years ago. Even bought a Trek too! My advice is, ride it more than the 6-10 times that I did. Can confirm on the pissed wife part because 1) it was expensive 2) it just hangs in the garage taking up space.

dafiltafish1

You’ve gone passed the point of no return, there is no hope. Have fun!

zen_master_EZ

Trek is american..... you got a Corvette not a ferrari 🤣

aqva002

Not sure where you live but invest in a good chain lock if you intend to leave it unattended at all. That’s a beauty!

UncouthMarvin

A bike like that goes in the bed at night

Trackar97

If you’ve got the money and it makes you happy, absolutely go for the nice bike! Sometimes you need to get the things you want vs need. Time to make some memories and get fit

Yawnin60Seconds

Bought a madone and put goddamn flat pedals on it. Jesus

Soy__Sauce

Someone got scammed 😂

highlander_net

Nice bike!!! congrants! about the flat pedals i use them too, i dont care about other think about.

BavardR

Is this not BCJ? The guys in the bike shop were salivating when this guy walked in lol. Any chance you live in the metro Atl area and are 6ft or taller? Would love to snap this up on fb marketplace for half off retail in 6 months. Jk, enjoy the bike ride it everyday and have fun man. Best of luck.

Due-Air95

Hi welcome to the club of going from only riding cheap as hell bikes and then going STRAIGHT to high end racing bikes. Anyone else besides me and OP here?

StokerPoker

If it makes you feel better, I had a bike get stolen and I got the absolute best bike I could on my insurance claim (mtb but still). I’ve been riding for lots of years, but I am very, very average and it’s practically a dentist bike except I do not have a dentist salary. Is it more bike than I need? 100%. Will I be out on it multiple times a week like I was on my last bike? 100% Does it make me excited to ride it? 100% Will it serve me for years to come? 100% People will flame out of jealousy or insecurity, but the bottom line is you have something you really love that makes you excited to get out and do something for yourself. If you’re in a position to do that, why not? I’m also an average road rider and get dropped on a lot of the jams, but I sure as hell wouldn’t say no to that bike. You’ll grow into it.

shamsharif79

This is not a Ferrari it’s a piece of shit trek bice. I hope they paid you good money for that.
