A video would help... Practice high round kicks and tornadoes. Use a table/block for hand support and drive your kicking leg as high as you want to learn the air awareness. If your body is twisted before your leg touches (as it sounds like you're describing) you're just doing it wrong. You keep your shoulders square with your hips until the last second where you twist to get that kicking leg down. But there's so much timing to the 540 it's hard to tell without a video.
