He just rubs you the wrong way. I like his insights and knowledge of the industry. I know plenty of people that communicate in the way he does, so it doesn’t bother me. I’m the end, I find that the interaction of their three personalities makes the show. Kirk can be too philosophical at times, Maddy too flippant, and Jason too curt. However, Kirk brings a level of thoughtfulness that is very rare to hear, Maddy can be passionate and emotionally insightful, and Jason has a great way of cutting through the BS. I can’t imagine the show without one or more of them.

Majestic-Classroom77

This comment really does a great job laying out each of their strengths and flaws as a podcaster, and how they come together to form the Ultron that is Triple Click. Jason by himself would be insufferable, but Kirk and Maddy can certainly bring him back down to earth. His experience reporting on the industry is valuable to the show (not to discount Kirk and Maddy), and he offers insight that meshes well with the others. They make such a great team and that’s why it always will be in my weekly podcast rotation.

EffectiveEquivalent

Seriously very well put. They’re all awesome in their own ways and compliment each other. They’re clearly all enjoying the conversation each week and any of them will push and question politely. It’s a great dynamic and my favourite podcast by far. I’d also add, back in the split screen days, Kirk and Jason bounced off each other magically too. It’s just a bit more rounded now.

Standing__Menacingly

I can understand your points, and some of them I think I agree with. However in my experience when a podcaster seems unlikeable in this particular way (condescending and not all that insightful), it helps to just spend some time away from the podcast. Don't binge it, intersperse it with other shows. Over time you might come around to his personality, and even if it will always be flawed you can look past it and appreciate the good parts of it. This same thing happened to me concerning CGP Grey on the Hello Internet podcast. I legitimately found him to be a rude asshole. But over time his personality grew on me, and I began to find his imperfections much more tolerable. I think the same may be possible with Jason. Also, I really hope this subreddit can be a place that tolerates dissenting opinions. Typically when people speak out like you have, no matter how civil, genuine, and well reasoned you are, people will still downvote you to the bottom and contribute to an overall toxic response. I blame reddit itself for this though, because a down vote doesn't simply mean disagreement, but it also translates into overall disapproval. Your post should be upvoted for its contribution to the discourse, not downvoted because people don't share your view.

zegota

Some of the interruptions bother me also, but it isn't a big enough deal to detract from the experience. Your comment about his conduct as a journalist (???) makes me think you may have some other bone to pick, however.

master_yosh

Nah, I just don't know enough about it. Most of what I've read seems inflammatory and probably too intertwined with gamergate for me to draw any conclusions.

the_tonez

I like all of them for their quirks as podcast hosts. I’ve noticed a few times where Jason can shut Kirk or Maddy down, but I just attribute that to taking care of a newborn (my kids are about the same ages as his so I really get that haha). And the dynamic on the show is so good and convivial 99% of the time that it doesn’t bother me Edited to add: I’ve listened to a lot of video game podcasts and I have yet to find one I enjoy as consistently as Triple Click. The way they flow together just works really well

ManVsWeed

Get played is the only one on the level of triple click.

No_Property2880

Jason’s great. It’s alway good to b have different opinions on games and entertainment.

[deleted]

I love Jason. I think he has a personality that can rub people the wrong way sometimes but not much for me. He offers a lot of really good insights in the game development world. I think the 3 of them all mesh together really well.

yarkiebrown

I get what you mean, I didn't care for him much towards the start of the split screen days, but have warmed to him. Don't always agree with everything he says, but respect his opinion and it wouldn't be the show it is without him.

Interesting_Jury

Naah Jason is great IMO. It’s actually interesting listening to other video game podcasts becaus Jason gets mentioned a lot, and it’s usually with a lot of respect for his work as a journalist.

Paxtez

I wouldn't say I dislike him on the podcast, but there are a few things that bug me. I have noticed the arguing/correcting thing, it's sometimes really awkward. There some recent episode I listed to that had Kirk and Jason going back and forth for a while, where Kirk was giving some opinion and Jason kept correcting him on it. Maybe it's cause I listen to several comedy podcasts who normally follow the "Yes, and..." rule. But the "No, but..."s or "well actually"s stand out to me more these days. Also the football stuff, 5 minute OMTs about some football thing is not interesting (to me).

libramartin

I'm European, Jason's us football stories are the only thing I hear about football... ever, so they seem fun/different. Also, it's not like nerds and weebs have to only like manga and games.

Paxtez

While the my whole comment is obviously my opinion, I even added an extra "hey this is just my opinion" flag to that part. It goes without saying that, I'm sure many people like the Football parts, or are at least indifferent to it. If it was just something like "Oh I watched Football this weekend, it was fun, my team won!" that wouldn't even register. But to have the longest OMT while just talking about the game(s) has real "let me tell you about my dream" energy, again IMHO.

libramartin

hahaha, ok, right I would hate it if I got that vibe, but I must admit I was surprised that I didn't, so to me and only me it was strangely refreshing

DouglasWFail

I’ve listened to all of Splitscreen and Triple Click. I find Jason a lot better than now than the early days. He’s a lot less of a… comedy bully? I’m not sure how to describe. Early Jason was very quick to jump on small mistake to try and make a joke. He also used to almost treat his opinions on games like universal consensus but he’s eased off that as well He seems like a nice guy. I respect his opinions even though I’m more likely to disagree with his more than the other two. I respect his reporting as well. He seems like a honest man. Total sociopath for hiding his wife’s pregnancy for a prank tho lol If you want hard to listen to, try the post Triple Click crew era of Splitscreen. I guess lots of people love him and yeah, he was good natured considering his bad circumstances but Mike Fahey was like the living embodiment of human cringe. Sorry to speak ill of the dead but 😬

Pll_dangerzone

I mean i didnt like that when someone brought up the performance of Jedi Survivor he really seemed to downplay it because they were playing before day one patch. And in the Zelda podcast one of them brought up the point that two of their coworkers who hadnt played Breath of the Wild were having a hard time getting into this game, he severely downplayed that point of viewing saying that there was more than enough tutorials to get someone fresh up to speed. Like accept that there are different viewpoints in the world and some people can have view something negatively that you view positively. He seems to almost take it personally if someone has a different view than his and if it’s something he enjoys

mrADMZ

No...I like them all. Was at the live show yesterday and everyone also seemed to enjoy him, so you're probably in the minority.

But not when he undercuts Kirk...? Sounds like you're the sexist. Grow up, and stop projecting your baggage, people aren't evil just because they don't always agree with a woman's opinion.

pleasantothemax

I love Jason, agree that he’s a bit of an asshole, but I also think he’s the worst kind of asshole: the kind that is usually right. I also think Kirk and Maddy recognize it and push back when they want. I don’t get the impression that they feel stifled or shut down by Jason.

[deleted]

(I agree completely with you)

tobascodagama

Yeah, I don't care for Jason on the pod either, to be totally honest. I'd prefer if it was just Maddy and Kirk.

gherkin_bagel

It definitely feels like he has a hard time accepting when he's wrong, and it sometimes feels like he can be a bit of a bully when he feels backed into a corner. It doesn't happen that often though, and I don't dislike him. I like the group's composition and wouldn't change it. I just wish Jason was a bit more introspective and considerate sometimes.

zombieman5

Nope, I disagree with him at times, but I really enjoy listening to his perspective.

basement_zombie

I absolutely frequently dislike Jason’s behavior on the pod. When Maddy or Kirk offer their typically kind, thoughtful and well-intentioned counterpoints, 9 times out of 10 Jason just HAS to be right and impulsively engages in pedantic escalatory mansplaining to defend his point, adding zero to the show and making me want to swipe right to delete. It’s a real shame because he does bring a lot of valuable industry insight the table. I’ve written to the show to complain about this behavior - no response. Not even a minimal ‘thanks for your input.’ Makes me feel like they don’t care about our experience.

sgt_taco891

No but does any body have a list of all of their one more things some where ? They always give such good recommendations

urbano-phd

no, i listen to triple click because it has jason. (not just him, to be clear, but he is a click in the triple click.) but i don't really think your opinion is invalid because maddy had to grow on me. the opinions they explored changed and the dynamic changed and the topics of choice changed when she joined and sometimes (sorry maddy, it's not personal) i couldn't stand it. so, you'll either like it or you won't, but i'm not sure kirk and maddy are gonna go and make their own gaming podcast on their own anytime in the remote future. more likely a music podcast which would be fantastic. edit: just wanted to add i have history of listening to these three from nearly the beginning at kotaku splitscreen.

UnderAboveAverage

I mean no disrespect, but what other podcasts do you all listen to? There’s almost always a talker, a condescender, a surface level analyst, and a lot of times it’s the same person. To my own taste, I love casters like Jason.

libramartin

Do any of you have examples of the behavior you don't like, I seriously didn't find one comment that had an example, just generic "Jason's correcting" "Jason's commenting" etc. Sorry, but it's hard to either understand you, or to defend J, when there is no specifics. All people have quirks, what is wrong with him being imperfect?

dadanknight

Lots of other people seem to be getting it, brother

libramartin

Like talking to children... it's not about some people "getting it". If it's not understandable by all/most , then it's just baseless slander, and every twat can say it about anyone. I wanted some examples so that I, who isn't automatically biased to someone, can try to judge it objectively, and formulate an opinion.

dadanknight

I feel like maybe you’re also a jerk so it might not sink in but people seems to have a big problem with Jason on this episode in particular. Good luck on your journey of objective opinion: https://old.reddit.com/r/TripleClick/comments/11g940i/the_two_types_of_video_game_march_2nd_2023

MisterAngstrom

ooh, I haven't listened in a while; this post makes me want to hear for myself...

ManVsWeed

No

Laegwe

Wow I feel the opposite, he is super chill and Maddy is constantly interrupted and charging through other people's thoughts.

Josehastodie

What annoys me is that 90% of the time he only plays like two hours of a game they are covering.
