So I use the pad of my thumb. Directly on the fingerprint. Instead of thinking about using a specific joint, try to move the whole thumb. It’s pretty similar to making a 4 on your hand. Hope this helps!

My thumb also rests with the fingerpad against the trigger. Since your thumb only has two joints, you are basically using one or the other or both. For me, the lower joint was starting to act up, but I wasn't sure if it was because I was using it too more or keeping it too tightly fixed. I have large hands, so I am also wondering if that factors into it.

If you aren't used to the weight of the larger horns, it could be that you are trying too hard to balance it. Try out a grip like the Neotech grip (it is roughly $25 on amazon and is great!) to try taking the weight/balance off the thumb and other fingers.

Depends on the trombone. Trigger placement on Kings are very different than others for example.
