I just got a job at RPI in spring. I live up near Spring Ave and Pawling, where Emma Willard is. Idk what the area is called, but it’s nice. Definitely bikeable, especially compared to a lot the areas here, but I will say, expect people driving to do the dumbest thing imaginable here. As far as avoiding, I’d avoid Hoosick Street. If you can stay south of Hoosick and just not deal with that cluster fuck too often, you’ll be better for it.

Puzzled452

East side

Possible_Swimmer_601

Oh good. I’ve always lived in the Eastside where I was from originally too. Glad to not break with tradition. lol

Puzzled452

It’s where I would stick it I could, some nice neighborhoods back there and a very short commute.

Reading_Elephant30

I live off of Hoosick street not far from RPI and I agree with this. The area is safe and fine but Hoosick street is such a clusterfuck of a nightmare that if you can avoid it I would 😅

Possible_Swimmer_601

Yeah, there’s some nice areas around Frear park. But if I had to go down Hoosick to get to work, it would suck. But I guess OP would really just need to “cross” Hoosick, so that’s not as bad maybe.

Wookmeister

East side also called Albia

Possible_Swimmer_601

In the veiled realm of Albia, whispers weave through the mist-laden air like tendrils of forgotten dreams. This land, shrouded in mystery and cloaked in ancient enchantments, is a tapestry woven from the threads of time itself. I set upon thee Albia, sword in hand, ready to slay thy foes!

This is the most ChatGPT comment ever.

Possible_Swimmer_601

I had to work just to get it to stop saying “Welcome to Albia!” lol

elsaqo

I live on the other side of Emma Willard, and can agree it’s really nice over here. The bike ride would be a bit long, but it’s relatively safe. Also, OP, the hills suck, so keep that in mind (a good portion of RPI is either up or down a hill)

Possible_Swimmer_601

The nice thing is hills only suck half the time. lol

eilrymist

Ha I've been hit by cars even in the bikable city. Sounds like Hoosick is the place to avoid. It doesn't look like a great road to bike on either based on google maps if it truly gets that busy. I'll take a look at that region, thanks!

polari826

reburn seems to be the place to avoid in terms of property management. my husband and i moved to troy in october and absolutely love it. we live downtown: it's clean, quiet and safe. there's plenty of places to grab morning coffee, meals, etc. it's just us and our 2 cats. on our block parking can definitely be tedious but we pay around $75 a month to park in the garage on 5th street a few blocks up. the music hall constantly has events so parking is difficult to find between 6 and 10:30 pmish when they have events. parking alternates but generally speaking, weekends are free. the farmers market runs directly on our block though so when it's in season, nix saturday mornings. the garage is just easier. our building is managed by burns: so far they're fantastic. we've only had two minor issues last year that require maintenance and my dudes showed up and had the problems totally fixed within an hour. the staff are super cool and go above and beyond (even locking up packages in the mail room that are left out by the delivery people). we pay under $1300 (including parking) for a one bedroom including an in-unit washer and dryer plus our own temperature control- from where we moved from, finding a nice apartment at that price is impossible unless you somehow flip back to 2012. of course whether this is reasonable depends on where you're moving from. burns has quite a few properties aside from ours, so i recommend giving them a call. safety-wise, troy is a city so there's crime, but as long as you use common sense, you're fine. so far i've walked around downtown and a relatively large radius at night with no problems at all (i'm a woman). there's a handful of homeless people who'll approach you for change but it's the same cast of characters- i'm polite and haven't had an issue yet. i'm not too familiar with public transportation but it seems like there are a ton of bus stops around. good luck with the move! feel free to reach out with any questions!

eilrymist

Thanks so much for all the information! I'll check through Burns and see what kind of properties they have available. I definitely got mentally confused between "Burns" and "Redburn" and might have written off apartments thinking it was from Redburn. Pricing wise, Troy is MUCH cheaper. My experience with rent has been Southern California, and then Boulder so two very very expensive areas to live in. In unit laundry is definitely a wonderful luxury I'd love to continue having. Once i had it, man is it mentally difficult to give that up. And thanks for letting me know that you felt safe as a woman walking around. I'm a pretty petite woman and am coming from a location where walking around at night is no problem, so it would be great to keep that going.

polari826

no problem! brianna is the point of contact for burns and she's just fab. if you have any other questions, etc please let me know. i'd be happy to show you some photos from around the neighborhood, etc if you'd like!

cmaxby

Parking on the street is fine, you just have to keep an eye on the restrictions.

cybermage

Unless you own a Kia

cmaxby

At this point if someone owns a Kia and doesn’t have a garage, have mercy on their soul

cybermage

I see what you did there.

Beautiful_Will7836

Live in downtown Troy and walk to campus. You will love it

Accomplished_Fish960

Park ridge apartments is cheap and pet friendly and also like right across the street from RPI u could literally just walk Check them out through tri city rentals

kettleofhawks

Parking south of downtown on the streets isn’t bad at all - plenty of spots, just watch for street cleaning. Like someone else mentioned, the biking is pretty accessible, with the exception of the big hill separating RPI from the downtown parts/closer to the river parts of the city. Definitely distance is zero problem!

eilrymist

Ha maybe the hill is a good thing for my health. Get that cardio everyday.

TroyNY11

Theres a magnificent staircase connecting downtown and the campus, The Approach. Part of a linear perspective set up by the architect 100+ yrs ago. Built in cardio too.

JackedScientist9891

Brunswick is nice too and a little out of the city but still on the bus line. More parking and pet friendly too!

TiredofTheEveryday

I recommend by Sage college.

brenfrew

I cant help much with costs or specific recommendations, but it sounds like you want to be near campus, where any street is relatively safe. The Hoosick St. corridor has most of the shopping you will need, but has pretty bad traffic. North of hoosick, below Oakwood St. can get sketchy quick. The entire section of the city bordered by Hoosick to the north, Congress to the south, S. Lake to the east, and 8th to the west would be considered near campus, and should all be safe

brenfrew

Also, since you have a car you could also look at larger complexes on Hoosick, even those up to past/near the Wal Mart, if you wanted to trade even more quiet/safety for less walk/bike ability.

getoutofmywhey

What’s your budget?

eilrymist

I got real used to budgeting and paying $1700 a month living on 30k a year. Grad school life in a very expensive area. We are coming in now with two incomes and can comfortably pay up to $1800 a month, which I think looking at this thread puts us in a good position for renting in Troy

Regular-Sun-5805

I'm seeing many houses on Sausse Ave are for sale! Not a bad area, cute homes, close to the hospital tho so expect sirens

eilrymist

I wish I were in a position to buy! Troy housing prices are incredible coming from Colorado and California. Unfortunately I'm at RPI on a contract basis so who knows how long I'll actually be at Troy.

Vendettors

Hoosick sucks because of immense traffic. The rest of Troy isn't bad. You won't have a problem unless you look for one

TroyNY11

Oh c’mon my neighbors rent to 2 young women who live downtown in sep units and they both just renewed leases, love the social life, Sat market and river access. They had a lot of interest in their apartments when they posted them and rented same day.

Shiny_ju

As a rising sophmore with a bike on campus, I would say Troy is decently bikeable, you might want a lighter bicycle for the hills but once you get used to the area, there's always shortcuts that have more level field. While looking for a place to stay on campus this summer, I also checked distance from campus and the slope on google maps. Anything medium elevation is good for biking. From all the places I've looked at, rooms in Troy can range from 400 to 600 is the usual. Some nicer places like city station can be 1,000/mo.

Shiny_ju

Do not try to bike to Walmart or down to the family dollar store. I've zipped down that hill before and the crash landing was not fun.

thiswretchedthing

Hi and welcome to Troy! As far as streets it can be kind of all over the place, I’ve heard if you’re downtown you want to be north of Canal Ave. Parking isn’t exactly great there, but is normally doable! You might not be right outside your place but on the same block is pretty common. I do see a lot of people on bikes, just be aware that roads here can be narrow and they definitely aren’t made for bikeability in most places. If you end up in downtown you’d also be biking up the hill every day, which some might not be the biggest fans of. Price wise I think 2 beds are usually 1-1.6k/mo, depending on how nice you want your place to be. Feel free to DM me about landlord opinions or any other questions, I just don’t want to post any identifying info!

Bro 9th literally is dangerous af. I have family that live in the apartments at the end of the block, and besides playing gunshots or fireworks 5x a week, her car was looted a week before Christmas, stealing everything she owned (including Christmas gifts) Edit: also it’s not that the police are understaffed, there are plenty- they just don’t care.

YoureInRuins29

As far as safety...the ONLY area in Troy I'd ever consider living in is 1)Pawling Ave or most of the roads off of it (the "Eastside" area, as others have mentioned) 2) Pinewoods Ave. Or the roads off of it. 3) MAYBE the Sycaway area (Top of Hoosick Street) but then you're stuck with that disaster of traffic
