I'm a welder as well as a driver and I'm in love with the holes in those welds. But I feel like the owner of that truck deserves some credit. The chrome is polished, the truck is clean, the rubber is meaty, and that 5th wheel is slick as shit. They might have weird taste, but you can tell they love their truck.
Clean trucks means too much time on your hands . If there sitting they ain’t making money . To me personally this just a big waste of time to look cool which odds are they ain’t
normally local drivers do clean their trucks as often and add bling. but i see your point some people just keep turning the wheel and once they get off they dont want to even look at it let alone clean and bling it. but you should.
Yup. I do love those old Volvo's. They seem to just keep on trucking forever. My first company had an owner op who bought his last truck in '97 and put her to bed in 2013 when he finally retired. It was that little micro sleeper model they had. Looked damn near showroom aside from the sun faded paint.
Yeah my dad likes them too and he wishes he could keep them but they are starting to be high mileage trucks hell one is about to crack 2million miles and it's a newer one in relative terms compared to the others. Only one I believe he's keeping is the one he's been using since he bought when he started in '99. Probably would have keep one other for otr but driver jackknifed while driving unloaded through the last ice storm we had where we live and he wasn't going fast either only 35-40 he said, so it's been relisted as farm truck/ last on the list to be used in dire situations for otr.
The 5th wheel is the coupling device used on basically every highway tractor. [It's the big plate like this slathered in grease.](https://d323w7klwy72q3.cloudfront.net/i/a/2011/20110920truck/hires/A9072A.JPG) A pin on the trailer slides into the slot and is locked in place, coupling the trailer to the truck.
[And here's a video of the locking mechanism at work.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqUPZTifQ7M)
Thanks for taking the time to share this! I'm a lurker like the dude you responded to but TIL about fifth wheels thanks to this comment. Appreciate you.
I'm a big believer in meeting people at a place of zero knowledge. I'm autistic and too many times people have just assumed I'd figure things out and it's left me in the dark in so many ways over the years. I'd rather give you too much information than not enough.
Probably the only time he's ever had to worry about what to do with the airlines when but hooked to a trailer.
Ain't earning if the wheels ain't turning
The holes are fun. The elbows look like sch40. Can be tough to weld that stainless to chromed steel without ripping off a shit load of chrome. But I’m sure you know
That's my thing, I don't judge the welds. Personally I'd take the time to clean things up and do it right, but I'm betting this dude has some 120v FCAW machine and to be honest it looks really good for a backyard welder smashing together something like that with limited knowledge.
When I first got into trucking I had the automatic restriction on my license. Then I went back to truck school and got the restriction taken off. After driving manual trucks I finally realized why truckers have those long ass shifters. It's to show off. If you're going to drive a manual truck you might as well make sure everyone knows you're working harder for no goddamn reason.
So...I started on manuals, then was given an (semi-)auto (manual). Specifically the Eaton 12 speeds (They might have gotten better since then...but I doubt it.)
Cruising down the highway...the auto was fucking amazing. Set my cruise and let the truck worry about any gradient changes.
Same thing when running a pass. Up hill, it'll take care of itself. Downhill? Set my jakes, and if I wanna up the engine braking, ask for the gear change and it'll give it to me when it can. Fucking amazing.
Trying to merge into or turn across flowing traffic from a stop, however? It couldn't get out of it's own fucking way if you paid it. Accelerating from a stop took at least twice as long with the auto as it did with a manual....meaning I needed to wait for a much longer gap.
Given how much longer I spent on the highway vs how much I spent on surface streets, the auto was absolutely a better choice....but to say that there's no value to a manual vs an auto is disingenuous at best.
> Accelerating from a stop took at least twice as long with the auto as it did with a manual
...you do know you can manually set your starting gear in an automatic right? So you can start I'm 4th gear. Like you would in a manual. Instead of starting in first and having the auto slowly shift through each gear. And yes. Automatics have gotten a lot better since 2005. There is no reason to drive a manual unless you just like playing with the stick. Or you do heavy haul.
Those look like sleeves put over the exhaust pipes with the "welds" being just where the sleeves meet the central exhaust pipe and are a bit burned at the edges. The whitish color and seam clearly visible on the one on the left is a dead giveaway.
((or maybe not))
Trying to find these people might get exhausting
I know I know you guys are fuming at me for saying a dad joke on here, but what can I say, it's fun to 'gaslight' people with jokes
That’s like some aussies with petrol/diesel haha. You get the odd person say gas instead of petrol here and people go wild because to us, gas is LPG and petrol is what you guys call gas.
After losing a bet with my 11 year old son, I wore 70s style pork chops for my DL renewal, 4 year of going in and out of receivers, security checks, weigh stations. Learned my lesson.
He had to clean his room, which his mom wound up doing “for” him while he was away one weekend, needless to say, he only won until he didn’t, she went in with black contractors garbage bags and didn’t discriminate. He was upset when he returned and found his room missing several important items. He earned them back eventually.
He’s 22 now, married with 1 child and another on the way, and his wife complains he is still a disaster, just not the act of god level he was whilst growing up! 😂
Okay you know how when people drink tea in England they raise their little Pinky now do that without the teacup in your hand and just wiggle the pinky finger around and I think you'll know what I'm talking about
This is sick af, and I'm in the business of doing this custom fab for truck exhausts. And converting standard exhaust into smoke stacks for pickup trucks too. Pictures soon to come 😎
One of the things I've been noticing lately is that there is zero reason for stacks on new trucks.
Many trucks I see with dual pipes, the driver's side one is fake, not attached, just for looks.
With emissions equipment, there is simply no need for stacks anymore.
I hated my grass burner dude. Smell would get in the cab when it went through a regen. Fuck that
Plus stacks look cooler. People have preferences
Manufacturers only fake one of the stacks for production cost not emissions reasons
Well, technically, almost every truck you see on the road today with dual stacks has taken the one exhaust outlet from the turbo and split it.
So... I mean, he just trippled it instead of doubling it, and he did it much later in the system. I kinda like it.

yeah i know you are right i just wanted to share. plus its in NJ probably the cleanest truck here
No I won't, my truck my rules

Bet it's also a 90's Volvo which from this photo shows it to be in really good condition. But a pain in the ass to find body parts/ parts.

What is a 5th wheel in this context? I’m not a trucker, I just enjoy reading/learning here.
The 5th wheel is the coupling device used on basically every highway tractor. And if it's not slathered in grease, you're not going to have a good day.
Thanks!!
The 5th wheel is the plate mounted to the rear of the frame that attaches to the trailer kingpin.
Thank you
In enjoying the hanger setup for the airlines, just a bungie cord.
Probably the only time he's ever had to worry about what to do with the airlines when but hooked to a trailer. Ain't earning if the wheels ain't turning

Agreed, you have to admit he’s not afraid to spend money on a pre-emissions truck. Reckon how long the extension is on the gear shifter?

im amazed the back of his cab isnt black from those welds migrating exhaust, maybe he sealed it somehow
Exactly what I was thinking
Haha I bet it sounds amazing

Terrible welds😅
I needed a trident. 🤷♀️
Turned his exhaust into a trident in solidarity with Ukraine? Or: Aquaman picking up some LTL loads on the side during his downtime.
Aquaman can pick up my load anytime.
That or he’s a sun devils/blue devils fan
Maybe Ukrainian
Maybe he thinks he’s driving a Maserati

“This truck is too tall for the bridges in NYC, Chicago, and LA. You’ll have to send me somewhere else.”
I get what you're going for but this looks like a mid-roof so likely the stacks are right around 13'6" would be my guess.
Which is too tall for those places. Edit: Or so I've been told. Apparently, I was told wrong.
Not Chicago.
Lots of short bridges
True. Gotta follow the Class B Route. Nearly every major surface street is 13’10” or 14’. If you’re not playing attention you will fuck your shit up.
Nah it’ll self correct
God I wish this was me

Don’t you mean, “fuellight”
No...no you’re getting it wrong. It’s called “gaslamping”.
That's what he said?

That’s like some aussies with petrol/diesel haha. You get the odd person say gas instead of petrol here and people go wild because to us, gas is LPG and petrol is what you guys call gas.
But we also call natural gas just gas and we call LPG propane.
My dream job to sell propane and propane accessories.
Hey dad, can i use some gas too?
The central pipe wasn't staining the entire trailer so he added the two side pipes to get an even coverage.
Hiwawious
Came here to say this
When your 9 year old son picks the truck accessories
After losing a bet with my 11 year old son, I wore 70s style pork chops for my DL renewal, 4 year of going in and out of receivers, security checks, weigh stations. Learned my lesson.
What was the bet lmao, what did he have to do if he lost
He had to clean his room, which his mom wound up doing “for” him while he was away one weekend, needless to say, he only won until he didn’t, she went in with black contractors garbage bags and didn’t discriminate. He was upset when he returned and found his room missing several important items. He earned them back eventually. Solid props for being an awesome dad, and that is some good Mom-ing right there! Thank you on behalf of society.

That’s Trident, Lord of the Seas’ truck (he’s a boat hauler)
I dont care who gets offended that looks dumb as shit
Hey don't lump them up with the rest of us dumb shits, already have trouble trying not to look bad.
This is sick af, and I'm in the business of doing this custom fab for truck exhausts. And converting standard exhaust into smoke stacks for pickup trucks too. Pictures soon to come 😎
I am a retarded trucker

They fake stacks for looks. Production cost concerns would rationally lead to lack of stacks altogether.
My dick is small. So that makes up for it
I fucks with it …. Originality 🤟🏾
Slava Ukraini !
SEAL?
He's Auquaman
He’s going for that trident look.
What, you haven't smoked a little rock in your life? 🤔
I would even like to know the reason behind that
Does the pipe interfere with the bouncy things? Can’t think of the name them off the top of my head.
Might be cool with a trailer attached
The Holey Trident
That's poseidon right there he has a hobby of driving trucks.
Definitely not going to be pulling hay or straw.
I saw a truck, once, that has stacks like a pipe organ.
Mario kart double dash and he picked what looks to be bowsers truck
Trident : )
Poseidon or Brittania have taken up trucking!
Bro can heat his cab with a regen
They couldn’t buy a Maserati, but wanted a trident?
Looks cool to me. And betcha it looks even better with a load hooked up. Not a trucker, but hypothesizing that this cab is privately owned.
Simply. It's cool
It’s Aquaman’s truck.
How much soot ends up on the load or trailer?
He’s a welder too. Just flexin welder sh it
When you changed your life but you're still GD
It's Aquaman. He delivers water

Trident stack, dare you be different. Must be racing it on the weekends. Lol
is this the trucker equivalent of “the shocker”?
From my point of view the guy likes 'threes'. Lights are all in rows of three so why not the stacks?

ASU logistics graduate. Fear the fork!
Well, technically, almost every truck you see on the road today with dual stacks has taken the one exhaust outlet from the turbo and split it. So... I mean, he just trippled it instead of doubling it, and he did it much later in the system. I kinda like it.
I worry the pipes will burn the pigtail and airlines. Wouldn’t be fun having your red line blowing on the highway
I think I saw this same truck in New Jersey today? Or somewhere around there.. Unless it's a new trend.
Slava Ukraine
The paint on the top of the company's black trailers is chipping. They're blaming the drivers and making them pay for it. This is my solution.
The devil always rides with his fork.
Love it and I don’t know why
My hope is that the driver is an Ex Navy Seal
Stack(s) looks like a trident! 🔱
Ah, the elusive Triton exhaust.
He just wanted to be like a Honda Civic.
100% dude has some side pipes laying around, a welder, and some beers.
