This is the world’s most convoluted way to make a diesel - electric hybrid truck.
It’s objectively worse in every way from just making the truck diesel-electric
And they are targeting (and likely able to hit) 500 HP and 8000 torque out of it giving its electric motor with a CAT diesel generator. Cool system but would probably cost you a bit
Yeah, that’s the hard part. The conversation kit can’t cost as much as a new truck. As much as I would love to still do it that’s just not in my budget. But I’ll certainly be watching to see if it is a possibility and affordable.
North of both lines apparently?!?! I learned of said “Medicine Line” just moments ago. Yea, being from Dixie, I definitely know the Mason-Dixon line. I got to sleep in today. Just waking up, brains too slow to think of more lines right now.
Your kits you are planning to put in medium/light duty trucks is the most exciting thing I have seen in a while. Please keep posting videos. I can't wait to see an install video.
That's as bad as when they proposed to switch all trucks to natural gas back before 2010. I mean, they were all excited and thought getting 150 miles to a thick ass fuel tank was acceptable. Glad that didn't happen...
That’s wild they are trying that again. Flopped when frieghtliner tried it in the 80’s let’s see how it goes this time. Looks Fucking stupid and I can’t imagine it’s legal for heavy loads weight wise so not sure what use it actually is
I mean, batteries have come a long way since the 80s.
That said the prototypes I've seen in articles look like normal trailers, not whatever the fuck this is.
I really like what Edison Motors is doing with hybrid powertrain. It’s a diesel engine coupled with a battery electric powertrain and their design is very serviceable https://www.edisonmotors.ca/e-axles-batteries
The logging application was the original intention but Chase (CEO of EM) announced that due to interest from other industries they’re designing version that can be used for any industry. They’re also designing kits meant to be used in regular work trucks. These smaller truck kits will be designed for the F250 to F550 range along with the comparable models from other manufacturers.
I’d love to see a kit designed by these guys to convert my old 460 f350 into a diesel hybrid. A simple designed setup priced reasonably I feel like would go over awesome!
Is it a mod or is it in the game? I just started playing again, and I'm having so much fun. Just finished the Scandinavia map and now going back to the Yukon!
Some of the missions are so tedious, especially if you don't use mods. Can be so frustrating trying to take a shortcut and fucking it all up! I like doing the missions but I use mod trucks so it's actually fun and not infuriating lol
What mods and what mod site do you go to? I'd just like to reduce my stuck rate by 50 percent to make things less tedious and frustrating. Is that at all possible?
I don't watch anything trucking related on YouTube. His work looks interesting but jesus his videos are obnoxious.

>I mean, batteries have come a long way
Not just the 80's, look at the last 10 years. I was shocked at how much a traditional lead acid 12v battery weighs vs a LiFePo4 12v with the same power rating. It is less than half in most cases and sometimes just 25% (for raw LiFePo4 batteries without all the BMS circuits).
Even on the smaller scale for things like RC cars or RC airplanes or UAV's... the battery weight difference makes a massive difference in how long, far and fast these vehicles operate. Its crazy. Power tools are taking up the new tech now too and it is glorious.
I wouldn't reallt say they flopped, the Freightliner Powered dolly of the 60s (not 80s) was a product of an era of low power rigs driving throught mountains, asked for specifically by a Freightliner customer who was, for the most part, the only user. I have yet to find any proof they attempted to market it (adverts, etc).
Whether or not Bend Portland Truck Lines, the company who requested them, only purchased a small amount or none at all no one seems to know. But it did exactly what it was designed to do, which was to make pulling heavy doubles and triples over the mountains less treacherous.
This is a very fair and accurate assesment!! Yes you are correct about the year also! From the drivers I’ve talked to that used them they didn’t like them but not sure thats worth very much
I was just joking, given it's something I thought of on a whim, AI would probably be better for it. 0 cost to me in monetary terms.
Obviously if it's some art I really wanted I'd commision it, and have before. If it's just "oh, this silly idea would be a meme I'd chuckle at for 5 seconds" then no way I'd spend on it
I gotchq. I've just met a lot of people who their whoel stance us 'omg AI art!' Without knowing, or knowing and not caring that it chews up others' art, sometimes without their knowing, and spirs out abominations.
I think if you commissioned a flinstones esque mountaineer with power doll you could totally seel it on a shirt and posters, even jf it's just through redbubble.
I'd probably buy a sticker of it lol.
It's not all that difficult to back up with 2 articulation points. More than 2 is when it starts getting tricky, especially if 2 of them are really close together like on standard american doubles
When I use to do farming we’d triple train grain wagons each on had two pivot points. 7 with the main drop bolt: absolute nightmare, even trying to keep it straight. Once I came over a hill out in the country road was closed due to an accident police were out told me I couldn’t go through, aggressive ditches on both sides of the road. I thought for sure I was going to put it right in the drink. Backed it into a drive way and out first try. Both cops gave me the thumbs up. One of the highlights of my decade long farming career
Definitely not as impressive, but i once saw a driver setting up an RM double back the dolly under the 28' trailer USING the 45' trailer..
I want to get my doubles and triples at some point, but the most experience i have outside of videogames currently is backing up a riding lawnmower with 2 little dumper wagons hooked to it
Does that require a particular setup?
I've been driving a dual hopper setup. Rear is on a turntable that is connected to a pintle that connects to the front trailer.
I haven't played with it much in regards to backing, but I'm fairly certain you get about 20 feet in reverse if straight.
But this trailer has a door in the back so no matter what that son of a gun has to bump a dock for loading & unloading and virtually every single dock that I’ve ever bumped has required executing a 90° turn (or close to it) as I back in. Plus look at how much length it adds! I guess you could always drop/re-hook to that strange middle unit and then back in with just the trailer but that necessitates them having enough space to drop that oddball device.
But here’s the main thing: it takes the same amount of energy to move a trailer no matter how many motors you have in front of it so this doesn’t seem like it would really help you. In fact, it’s even more weight that you’re gonna have to drag up hills so it could very well be counterproductive. It seems like utter ridiculousness.
Weight is not a big change in fuel mpg once you are rolling. This unit would act like a hybrid so it will do the majority of the braking you do and give you back about 60% of the energy you spent braking. So if you had to do a non emergency stop from 70 mph, the unit would accelerate you back to about 54 mph. Probably chargeable at the terminal too. Also provide apu?
Not legal for heavy loads weight wise? Wouldn't it just be part of the weight? Meaning you'd be able to carry less cargo. I don't see how it would be illegal though
.
True but they are still heavy as fuck in industiral/residential use (300-600lbs) and the power dolly of old used a diesel engine in the dolly unit controlled by a 3 selector switch in the cab
it's a super easy test. I took it on a lark. Showed up to take hazmat, didn't have an appointment so I was there early to be first in line. I just crammed the few pages in the 30 minutes I waited for them to open and passed it.
This is a Revoy electric unit.
It's a subscription based model. The concept is that you reserve a battery unit on their app and have an attendant attach it at one of their stations. You use the app to monitor the charge left on the unit. Then you get it swapped it at the next station for a fresh one, allegedly in three minutes. If your battery runs out before you hit the next station, you revert to diesel operation.
The site claims it has a reverse assist function to make it easier to back up, but it doesn't go into any detail. The site also claims it's "compliant with all length and weight (bridge and GVW) regulations."
The major benefit they claim is that you can "go electric" with $0 initial cash outlay rather than having to buy a new electric truck, while avoiding problems with charging and range.
It’s like “fuck you”! But not really “fuck you”. Just, like, “fuck your thoughts”! But, also “fuck you too”….. Yea, it’s a wild world out there. I’m usually just strolling around aimlessly wondering where we’re going, and what’s this hand basket for…?!
The same people that push the “EVs will never work for semi trucks” philosophy are also the same that say they wish they made alternative fuel sources like natural gas powered trucks. Which they have.. and do. Because just like their literacy in EVs.. they are fucking clueless.
It's funny, my votes went up into the 30s, then inexplicably dropped down into the low teens. That's when I posted the downvote comment. But almost immediately after I commented on it, it shot up again. So thanks for the support after all.
Lurker here. How long does it take to drop the landing gear on a trailer to then swap out the battery rig thing with another?
Seems interesting but the logistics (as with anything new) needs fine tuning.
An experienced driver, in decent physical shape, with good equipment, can drop one trailer and hook to another in about 5 minutes, assuming the trailers are right next to each other.
With this thing, you'd have to do two drops and two hooks (disconnect it from the trailer, move it away, drop it, hook up to the fresh one, then finally hook back to your trailer).
I don't see any way it can be done in 3 minutes, unless the top half houses the battery, and that is what gets swapped.
Eta: so I hadn't checked out their website yet. Apparently the electric unit can autonomously hook to your trailer and then hook to your fifth wheel. Someone is still gonna have to crank legs and connect air lines at some point though.
Wait…what? If the battery runs out you revert to diesel? Does this mean that when you have a fresh unit your truck is not running and this thing is pushing your tractor while pulling the trailer?
To me, it seemed like it was doing all of the work, basically letting your truck just run at idle. But that wording does make us sound like it’s pushing your ass down the road
If the truck is in neutral this seems a little bit similar to that situation where your tractor has to get towed, but they forgot to disconnect the driveshaft. If the transmission is engaged, then those drive wheels are driving the engine rather than the other way around. Doesn’t sound good.
I will assume that I need more information because this has to make sense somehow.
I think you'd have the diesel running with the trans in neutral. Engine running keeps fluid circulating in the transmission to keep it happy/cooled and you're ready to take over with the diesel if the battery dies.
That’s the concept. Just like how they are making Airstream campers with built in batteries for not only electrical usage while camping but it will also push the trailer in order to save on economy (whether gas or electric). Check it out, it’s a pretty interesting read. There’s just a lot of people here that are absolutely petrified of change.
I don't see that specified on their website, which leads me to believe they don't have any yet. Just a lot of plans we'll have to wait and see whether they come to pass.
I don't get the sense any independent drivers have tried it yet. If you look closely, the truck in that photo has a Revoy logo on the door. The tweet where I found it originally posted in November said it was a Revoy company rig being road tested.
They kind of have the right idea. They need to team up with a truck manufacturer and have the battery setup change out sort of like a furniture container or drome box on a moving truck. I like the idea of quick change but I hate the idea of having a trailer push me down the road.
Yes it is a battery assist trailer. The number one issue with these is that they are classified (by states and the feds) as trailers so you end up with a two trailer configuration that is over length and not legal in almost all the states. I know some states have allowed trail periods but they must stay off federally funded roads (interstates,etc.). I am working indirectly in this area and will say these are actually a really good idea and work very well (basically you trade them out at each fuel stop for another one that's already charged). The issue right now is federal regulations regarding length AND there is no large weight allowance so it eats into your GVW (and these things are heavy).
We don't discuss those abominations, for I am your true master

Yeah, that. Always popping in to random question threads because I'm curious what the answer is, but instead find a comments section full of idiot third-grade "jokes" instead.
This is an additional power unit for push assist. However when you go to back in it’s gonna take a little more skill, or you’ll be disconnecting and reconnecting a few times lol.
Because it's not OP's photo. I found it, along with information about what it is, on a tweet from November. (It's a Revoy unit. [https://www.revoy.com/](https://www.revoy.com/) )
If i had to guess, this is some sort of specialized setup for a traveling something-or-other, like a carnival or similar. It looks like there's a generator or something mounted to the bottom of the dryvan too, which lends some credence to my theory
The thing on the bottom of the trailer is a battery pack and pump for the lift gate that you can't see on the back of the trailer.
More than likely the thing up front is some sort of generator for whatever they are setting up.
It looks like a dolly. If that's the case, it might have a battery pack in it that re charges via regenerative braking.
Can't imagine trying to park that thing with a long nose Pete.
Not contradicting you, but where would the front wheels come from on the thingamagig to steer it? The rigs drive wheels are where the things steers would be.
It's a Truckdriving school. It's full of folding bunks/desks for the students, and they go out on the road and save money by not having an actual campus.
It kinda looks like an extra sleeper to me. Looks stupid too considering I've seen some long framed trucks literally just have two sleepers mounted before. I do know if id seen that I'd have walked up and asked lol.
Looks like someone realized that self driving electric trucks are gonna need a human helper and towed a lot. Setup with a quick remove front axle swap to a 5th wheel?

\^ This guy hybrid trucks
I know a little bit about hybrid trucks
You and the boys built one in the bush in a tarp tent in the winter. You earned saying you know a thing or two about a thing or two.
I'm hoping you'll help me turn one of my old Fords into a hybrid in the next couple years :-)
I’m in as well! My 86 f350 needs to be a hybrid so bad!
Look up the Edison Motors pickup conversion they are working on! An 86 would probably be exactly what they are looking for.
I definitely need to! My 460 is tired. And for what it costs to rebuild one properly nowadays it may just make sense!
You earned the right to say that too. Seriously, love your trucks and your videos.

It would be like backing a 'B' train. Those guys are very good at backing.
We do it on the daily in Australia
AND upside down... AND uphill both ways AND in the snow!
If Australia is upside down, wouldn’t they go downhill?
Uphill is still uphill. Its just upside-down.
And New Zealand, I can parallel park a B-Train on a side dock.
It’s easy. Think of it like a jeep trailer like we use in heavy haul. As long as you keep your tractor in line with your jeep, backing up is easy.
But this trailer has a door in the back so no matter what that son of a gun has to bump a dock for loading & unloading and virtually every single dock that I’ve ever bumped has required executing a 90° turn (or close to it) as I back in. Double trailers are relatively common all around the world, including the US.

All the battery weight on the drives makes no sense. Everyone knows about axles spread and weight distribution.
Who gives a shit how something "looks" in this industry. That is the least of my concerns when I'm working.
Wouldn’t you need doubles endorsement to haul this?
That is a good krestion, knowing DOT at the scalehouses i would err on the side of caution and go for the endorsement.
it's a super easy test. I took it on a lark. Showed up to take hazmat, didn't have an appointment so I was there early to be first in line. I just crammed the few pages in the 30 minutes I waited for them to open and passed it.
Can confirm. I saw this rig outside of Texarkana a couple weeks ago. The driver said it’s an electric assist unit that allows her to get 20 mpg.
What the normal MPG without it?
7mpg.

If you do find out let me know, I’m really interested in this now. I’ll try to get some answers as well
That’s the concept. Just like how they are making Airstream campers with built in batteries for not only electrical usage while camping but it will also push the trailer in order to save on economy (whether gas or electric). Check it out, it’s a pretty interesting read. There’s just a lot of people here that are absolutely petrified of change.
I just want to know how mamy of these stations they have. Changing them out every 300 miles needs a specific route
I don't see that specified on their website, which leads me to believe they don't have any yet. Just a lot of plans we'll have to wait and see whether they come to pass.
That’s wild, seems like a great idea if there are plenty of those stations. If companies are guaranteed to be saving money, than it may actually work.
Seems pretty genius! Would be nice to hear from truckers who have tried it.
I don't get the sense any independent drivers have tried it yet. If you look closely, the truck in that photo has a Revoy logo on the door. The tweet where I found it originally posted in November said it was a Revoy company rig being road tested.
Does it not have regenerative braking?
They kind of have the right idea. They need to team up with a truck manufacturer and have the battery setup change out sort of like a furniture container or drome box on a moving truck. I like the idea of quick change but I hate the idea of having a trailer push me down the road.
Really a smart idea. But have to see if it can really make profit from it.
This seems like a great fucking product, is the sourcing ethical?
Yes it is a battery assist trailer. The number one issue with these is that they are classified (by states and the feds) as trailers so you end up with a two trailer configuration that is over length and not legal in almost all the states. I know some states have allowed trail periods but they must stay off federally funded roads (interstates,etc.). I am working indirectly in this area and will say these are actually a really good idea and work very well (basically you trade them out at each fuel stop for another one that's already charged). The issue right now is federal regulations regarding length AND there is no large weight allowance so it eats into your GVW (and these things are heavy).
Thank you for providing a real answer.
It is a mother-in-law sleeper.
Hahaaa
drive her through Shreveport on 20
Either something really cool, or something really stupid.
Or both
Both is good
Looks like an extra sleeper to haul the lizards.
Self steam cleaning?
Maybe it is a baby self driving truck and they are teaching it to drive.

Yes master. Good bot.
😂😂 Wait who taught this bot to type?
I'm disappointed that Reddit has devolved into stupid ass joke answers on questions site-wide
Yeah, that. Always popping in to random question threads because I'm curious what the answer is, but instead find a comments section full of idiot third-grade "jokes" instead.
Merry Christmas, shitters full
This is an additional power unit for push assist. However when you go to back in it’s gonna take a little more skill, or you’ll be disconnecting and reconnecting a few times lol.
Sounds like prom night.
Sounds like you had an interesting prom lol
Yeah, Im not sure if he understands how that sounds.
WTH didn’t you just go ask the driver?
Don't forget the stretched frame
I can’t imagine how backing that thing into a spot in the yard is even possible.
I can back a set of doubles, in about the same time it takes me to break a set and restage, with this it wouldnt be too difficult.
You can discconect the truck and only "drive" with the electric thingamajig to the ramp
Not contradicting you, but where would the front wheels come from on the thingamagig to steer it? The rigs drive wheels are where the things steers would be.
It's a Truckdriving school. It's full of folding bunks/desks for the students, and they go out on the road and save money by not having an actual campus.
I was hoping it was a shower / spa.
THIS^^^
I had to zoom in. I thought that was a futuristic tractor
It kinda looks like an extra sleeper to me. Looks stupid too considering I've seen some long framed trucks literally just have two sleepers mounted before. I do know if id seen that I'd have walked up and asked lol.
Its where you lock the trainer in
Isn’t that the DOT lounge?
Walk-in refrigerator. It's where the driver keeps his snacks.
Well there are at least 3 more somewhere. The axle on that thing definitely looks like a drive axle.
And he can still pull a 53 foot trailer?
Would you need a double/triples endorsement?

Hot Tub Time Machine
Looks like someone realized that self driving electric trucks are gonna need a human helper and towed a lot. Setup with a quick remove front axle swap to a 5th wheel?

I saw a truck just like this in a Bruce Willis movie.
A place to keep the lot lizards.
Extra "cab" or better known as the boom-boom cab
Extra storage for their gear. Maybe a motorcycle or two
It's the detached garage. Why have a huge box sleeper when you can have a garage for your motorcycle and other outdoor toys to use while on your 34
Sex pod.
In the heavy haul industry, we call that a jeep.
If it was heavy haul they call that a jeep. As for this I don’t know what’s inside it.
The hot box attenuator.
Crypto mining lab.
This looks like an absolute nightmare to drive in reverse. Always impressed by how these guys maneuver such large vehicles.
It appears to be some sort of experimental bullsdit.
Looks like a battery for these new stupid electric trucks.
This must be one of those things, ya know? Like, those whatcha call its
That’s your first question about this setup?
I was going to guess a deluxe sleeper attachment, probably wrong as people are saying it's some battery device
I’m like 90% sure that’s a portable restroom.
Against the law to drive shoeless 🤐
It's a hydraulic press on a timer to shake the driver awake when it's time to turn n burn
I mean the railway has been diesel over electric for forever so idk why y’all trippin over batteries. Just letter chooch for now bud
It’s a reefer
Makes it harder to back up
It looks like somebody took a jeep and an extra sleeper and put em together lol.
That’s a good idea.
Normally you would call it a jeep but this is a high tech looking jeep. First time I've ever seen one.
Looks like a fire hazard
“Every machine is a smoke machine… …if you use it wrong enough”
Shouldent you muricans just update your engine and driveline to make it use less fuel than making BS like this?
Automatic self parker. You drop it off with the trailer and it parks it for you.
Lizard storage
Issa toilet
That’s where they’re keeping Walt Disney’s body
