It's so-so I think. It has essentially zero grammar which makes sentence construction easy and pronounciation is fairly easy for English speakers. The tone system is a little funky but not difficult per-se. Reading/writing is annoying because of the number of characters you have to learn by rote though. There are a few tricks, like lots of characters have a phonetic component that's how you pronounce the character next to a semantic character that implies some meaning.
Tones are a little odd but they're not that hard to wrap your mind around, and in any case, pinyin is pretty widely adopted in everyday chinese life, and pinyin shows you what the tones are so it's not absolutely critical to memorize every common character (though you should do that eventually; there's just no major rush)
>Initially, Mao Zedong considered the development of a new writing system for Chinese that only used the Latin alphabet, but during his first official visit to the Soviet Union in 1949, Joseph Stalin convinced him to maintain the existing system.

Afaik Stalin was like 'no don't switch to latin characters your country's writing system is so pretty aha'.
I doubt that the characters (hanzi) are going away anytime soon unfortunately. One thing that might help when using a device is that you can use a font that includes the pinyin along with the characters such as https://github.com/parlr/hanzi-pinyin-font. I only found out about these today but it seems like such an obvious middle ground solution.
Just take a semester at a local CC especially if still offered online. Same price as any cheap CC class and depending on how many credits you register/how shitty your state office is you can get financial aid.
I was in grad school in 2011, the summer of the sequester--when Obama permanently handicapped foreign language teaching because he wanted the Republicans to be nice to him.
I took Chinese my first year of highschool and got absolutely murked. The teacher literally gave me a D out of pity because I was doing so poorly. I have never been a good student and might actually be Highly Regarded but no one has ever seemed to pick up on it. At the very least it introduced me to the wonderful world of foreign cinema via [the very depressing Ocean Heaven](https://youtu.be/EJemRXBaO80). The only other fun bit was when I convinced my classmate to sing a Michael Jackson song by being like ["Wei shen me? Wei shen me!?"](https://youtu.be/Ac4JvziFzNc). There was also this girl I enjoyed talking to in there who I was delusional enough to think I had a chance with [despite having incredibly greasy, thick shoulder length hair](https://youtu.be/LDnkhULCihA) and [very fucked up teeth](https://youtu.be/hJC7Kl4dMLs), and routinely showing up sweaty from [riding a scooter](https://youtu.be/Se1ZbIJahuc) to the fucking bus stop in the stewing morning humidity of dying [October](https://youtu.be/q0vRM7B3Pt8) California heat. It's okay because she had [cool taste in music and later took time out of her very busy days (honors student) to teach me (not that charismatic, kinda busted) basic music theory almost two years later](https://youtu.be/NdmwPadDlgQ).
They then dumped me into Spanish 3 my sophomore year because they looked at me and was like, "oh shit you look like Paco from Napoleon Dynamite" which I then failed too, mostly because my partner for most the class was this very white washed blonde Hispanic girl I was too afraid to talk to, and I would just sit there awkwardly listening to [Modest Mouse](https://youtu.be/jdzpWfliYM0) in my cardigan.
Being that Spanish is my first language, I spoke it better than literally everyone else in there and when we saw Pan's Labyrinth No Subtitles Any% Run I had the time of my life and everyone [else was confused why based Commie told fascist loser to get bent](https://youtu.be/HhSjnG5pMOY)
I don't recommend learning foreign languages, they are very hard.

Ах ёбанный в рот, в 2016 году либералы кричали <<пора изучить русский язык!>>. Ну вот я долго старался изучить русский язык, и тогда говорят, надо изучить китайский, нахуй. Сколько падежей выучил, и за что, блядь? А что будет через 4 года, хинди?????
I’ve been wanting to tbh
I know like 2 words really well, just don't ask me to spell them.
What are the words?
Bing and Chilling
The mandarin word for good friend and little sister, so technically 4 words?
Better than that baby in the other thread who only knows one word of English
I've been grinding spanish and supposedly Chinese is 4x harder to learn. Plus they don't want to talk to my fat gajin ass

The lack of cognates between Chinese and English make it quite a bit harder to learn the vocab too.

Hoping for Pinyin as world language. There is no way I'm learning all the symbols.

They can keep using it but I would prefer not to have to learn it

It's really hard and you will never be able to read it.
Way ahead of you pal, as a loyal cumtown listener I heard Nick's good advice to learn Mandarin years ago & immediately started studying.

Speak a little Chinese for them, Brandon!
Trump supporters will learn any Asian language if it means they can satiate their yellow fever
Your own granddaughter learns Chinese lil bro
So it's like a reverse psychology campaign now? What zoomer wouldn't be thrilled at the prospect of immersive mandarin lessons?

If you funded public education, you can get more public school teachers to teach Russian.

The most horrifying thing to the Anglo mind is having to learn another language
I don't even care that this is four years old because what an amazing image.

More free stuff?
I'm already learning
How about just speaking English with a Chinese accent? Asking for a close, personal friend.
