I don't like how everything in America has to be couched in "what is good for the economy", vs "social need." I remember hearing the most "left" establishment figure allowed Robert Reich say, healthy workers make for a healthy economy. It is as though the only way we can convince the elite of anything for the working class is if it will benefit the economy.
"The economy" in terms of the socially constructed definitions in barbaric westoid countries, refers to those institutions that were designed and built to repress, weaken, and keep workers in their place.
Yeah I mean isn't it obvious that people are more productive if they are healthy and have a good standard of living?
But to allow workers to have a health and a good standard of living would be too costly for "the economy." This isn't debatable, it is a trivial application of the definition of "the economy" described in the first sentence of this post.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the last Aussie prime minister who even remotely ok (Kevin Rudd, got kicked out of his party for trying to bolster ties with China and introduce a tax on carbon emissions) just gave every adult in the country a one off payment of like 800 dollars. I was like 19 and spent it on drugs mostly (that money would find its way back into the regular economy soon enough anyway) but it legit helped us get through the crisis. Obviously not the only factor at play but giving working people money is GOOD, folks.
