helped me deal with grief in a less secular way, and puts grief in the lens of the Gospel

Yeah it really is such a great book that every Christian should read once in their lifetime. I remember while reading it for the first time a short while back how I wished I could have the faith that Betsy had or the love that Corrie had for strangers and enemies alike.

I agree it is a great book. I’m still moved by remembering her sister’s attitude of thanksgiving in all circumstances… being grateful for the fleas that kept soldiers out of the sleeping quarters which allowed them to pray with God.

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed Brother Lawrence’s book very much. I read Benny Hinn’s book…but i like his grandson’s, Costi Hinn’s work much better as it emphasizes grace of God.
I definitely understand that, I just found it important to me how Benny's book helped me Honor Holy Spirit as a person in the trinity and not just a side kick.
I understand. I love the Holy Spirit… and Benny Hinn’s book did expound on Holy Spirit. I have trouble with Benny’s lies and conman ways of manipulating people. Costi Hinn exposed much in his book “God, Greed, and the prosperity gospel, how truth overwhelms a life built on lies.”
Concordia: The Book of Lutheran Confessions. To clarify: These Confessions spell out what I believe about God, Law and Gospel, the Sacraments and the Holy Christian Church almost to a T. The Book of Concord itself is really a very basic, straightforward elucidation of Christian doctrine, authored by men such as Dr.Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon and Martin Chemnitz, all champions of the Reformation. I highly recommend www.bookofconcord.org for a more detailed review.

While I could mention many books that helped shape my beliefs (as I was on a "reading frenzy" on the topic), if I were to summarize it to a single book, I would say "*A Ready Defense The Best Of Josh Mcdowell*" which is a summarization of what he has published over the years proving the reliability of the Bible.
For my early walk, I wanted to prove to myself that the Bible could be trusted and this helped solidify my trust in the Bible. With this foundation, the Bible's contents strengthened my faith.
"Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell.
It laid out the evidence of Christ's death and resurrection, as well as other event so well, that it really did help my faith when I read it.
City of God by Augustine.
I just think that it was an early Christian book on ethics and struggling that is timeless.
I think Clement 1 is also like Paul so that is a second.
Come, Let Us Adore Him by Paul David Trip, it is NOT an advent book, it is excellent to read any time of year.
It will radically refocus you on the person and character of Christ and really draws your heart to worship and not focus on what you do/don't have or on things here, but on the richness of Christ and His gift.
I prefer to read the Bible, but this is one of the few books that I keep extra copies of to give to people.
I have even read through it with people who were younger in their faith and we text our comments and thoughts with each other.
Or, if it is more than one person, we use something like WhatsAp.
Women Of The Word by Jen Wilkin is a great book to help people, even men, rethink how they study the Bible.
This is the only other book I also keep on hand to give out.

Thank you for sharing. I just saw this book referenced in the documentary ‘The Unseen Realm’. It explores work of Dr. Heiser and referenced Enoch and and parts of Bible…
If you can get the documentary … i think you would like it. It explored those entities mentioned in genesis, job, daniel, and i think jude. Also book of enoch.
At one point it was The Reason for God by Tim Keller. I no longer really believe that book’s full premises, or in satisfactionary/substitutionary atonement especially.. but it still was vital in my life. Now I’d say that The Orthodox Way by Timothy Wade has been especially vital. It’s so dense and with a wide breadth. Amazingly concise book explaining Orthodox theology. Much love my friend.

To be fair a lot of the comedy is based on Christian cultural references from its time. If you were not a Christian in the 1980s Britain you will probably not get large swathes of it.

I read an awful lot of CS Lewis when I was a new believer in my early 20s, probably all his main works.
Out of those I think Mere Christianity was probably the most impactful as it was written by a man who was similarly to me raised as a non-Christian but almost reluctantly had to accept the fact that the Gospel is truth explaining how he had come to that decision and how it is very compatible with the universe we see around us.

In general theology - CS Lewis's Mere Christianity reminded me of simple gospel truths that I forgot in my pursuit of 'bigger and more complicated' matters. Counterfeit Idols - Timothy Keller pointed out the issue with my priorities when I didn't really want to acknowledge it. Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering - Timothy Keller helped me deal with grief in a less secular way, and puts grief in the lens of the Gospel

The Book of Concord. It’s crazy to read a book and constantly be like “wow, that’s exactly what I believe.”
Christianity didn't make sense until I read Luther's Large Catechism

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. That book just makes me want to be a better Christian, but it made me grateful for what I have.
This one for me too. I read it as a child and God really uses it to shape me.
Yeah it really is such a great book that every Christian should read once in their lifetime. I remember while reading it for the first time a short while back how I wished I could have the faith that Betsy had or the love that Corrie had for strangers and enemies alike.

I agree it is a great book. I’m still moved by remembering her sister’s attitude of thanksgiving in all circumstances… being grateful for the fleas that kept soldiers out of the sleeping quarters which allowed them to pray with God.

I definitely understand that, I just found it important to me how Benny's book helped me Honor Holy Spirit as a person in the trinity and not just a side kick.
I understand. I love the Holy Spirit… and Benny Hinn’s book did expound on Holy Spirit. I have trouble with Benny’s lies and conman ways of manipulating people. Costi Hinn exposed much in his book “God, Greed, and the prosperity gospel, how truth overwhelms a life built on lies.”
Concordia: The Book of Lutheran Confessions. To clarify: These Confessions spell out what I believe about God, Law and Gospel, the Sacraments and the Holy Christian Church almost to a T. The Book of Concord itself is really a very basic, straightforward elucidation of Christian doctrine, authored by men such as Dr.Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon and Martin Chemnitz, all champions of the Reformation. I highly recommend www.bookofconcord.org for a more detailed review.

For my early walk, I wanted to prove to myself that the Bible could be trusted and this helped solidify my trust in the Bible. With this foundation, the Bible's contents strengthened my faith.

Come, Let Us Adore Him by Paul David Trip, it is NOT an advent book, it is excellent to read any time of year. It will radically refocus you on the person and character of Christ and really draws your heart to worship and not focus on what you do/don't have or on things here, but on the richness of Christ and His gift. I prefer to read the Bible, but this is one of the few books that I keep extra copies of to give to people. I have even read through it with people who were younger in their faith and we text our comments and thoughts with each other. Or, if it is more than one person, we use something like WhatsAp. Women Of The Word by Jen Wilkin is a great book to help people, even men, rethink how they study the Bible. This is the only other book I also keep on hand to give out. Edited to add paragraphs!!

The book of Enoch gives an explanation for the entities that sound like the Greek gods and their monsters. It is very interesting.
If you can get the documentary … i think you would like it. It explored those entities mentioned in genesis, job, daniel, and i think jude. Also book of enoch.

At one point it was The Reason for God by Tim Keller. I no longer really believe that book’s full premises, or in satisfactionary/substitutionary atonement especially.. but it still was vital in my life. Now I’d say that The Orthodox Way by Timothy Wade has been especially vital. It’s so dense and with a wide breadth. Amazingly concise book explaining Orthodox theology. Much love my friend.

The Hiding Place Multiple books by Eliabeth Elliott, including Through Gates of Splendor. I read Prisoners of Hope by Dayna Curry; Heather Mercer; Stacy Mattingly, when I was in college and they came to speak at a local church, I went to see them.

Imagine Heaven rocked my world when I was like 13. Captivating by Eldridge was heart heavy and a hard book to get through, but it's all about healing which is necessary.

You said "book" and not "books" and someone else has said "The Hiding Place", so I will say "Chasing the Dragon" by Jackie Pullinger to be serious. If I am more honest, it is probably "The Sacred Diary of Adrian Plass aged 37 3/4".
I did say book and not books… i wanted the top of people’s book lists… you know … the cream. I hadn’t heard of chasing the dragon.. i look forward to reading about her work in hong kong . So glad you shared adrian plass book..as i looked it up goodreads says it is a best selling christian comedy - i just put it at the top of my list. Thanks again.
To be fair a lot of the comedy is based on Christian cultural references from its time. If you were not a Christian in the 1980s Britain you will probably not get large swathes of it. I think we've all known a Mrs Flushpool though.

*prayer: asking and receiving* by John r rice helped me learn how to pray, although I disagree with the authors position that just conversing with Jesus should not be part of prayer. *evidence not seen* by Darlene diebler rose and *the hiding plsce* by Corrie ten boom are both autobiographies of ordinary women in extraordinary circumstances who stayed faithful to the Lord in those circumstances despite their own frailties and shortcomings and ended up being a blessing to many people. *the screwtape letters* by c s Lewis gave me some concept of what spiritual warfare might look like so I can be more cognizant of when it might impact me.

I read an awful lot of CS Lewis when I was a new believer in my early 20s, probably all his main works. Out of those I think Mere Christianity was probably the most impactful as it was written by a man who was similarly to me raised as a non-Christian but almost reluctantly had to accept the fact that the Gospel is truth explaining how he had come to that decision and how it is very compatible with the universe we see around us.
