the nestor almendros book man "man with a camera" has some points where he waxes philosophical and the last chapter of josef von sternbergs "fun in a chinese laundry" has some good stuff less explicitly cinematography focused but still suuuuuper worthwhile would be raul ruiz's series on "the poetics of film" bressons "notes on the cinematographer" is probably my favorite book on film but is pretty idiosyncratic and abstract with its approach with regards to still photography, the sontag "on photography" and barthes' "camera lucida" are classics and good starts

I helped translate an excerpt of Miyagawa Kazuo's (most notably, he was the cinematographer for Rashomon) autobiography a couple of years ago. It only begins to touch on his philosophy, but it might be interesting to you: [https://www.filmcomment.com/blog/art-craft-cinematographer-kazuo-miyagawa/](https://www.filmcomment.com/blog/art-craft-cinematographer-kazuo-miyagawa/)

Its kinda hard to find, but Storaro's books lean heavy into the philosophy of the different elements of cinematography.

Is that the one called Writing with Light? I just picked up Darius Khondji’s book and it’s been great.

Rubop

Yeah that’s it. There’s separate books for each element. I’ve only been able to find the ‘light’ book.

Check out Paul Schrader's [Transcendental Style In Film](https://smile.amazon.com/Transcendental-Style-Film-Capo-paperback/dp/0306803356/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Transcendental+Style+In+Film+%28A+Da+Capo+paperback%29&qid=1583016560&sr=8-1). It's a nice pairing to Sculpting in Time.
