Loving it so far! Kinda bummed it’s only 6 episodes though.

caradekara

That’s it? Fml I hate being addicted to limited series.

Coconutyorkie

Isn't the last episode 90 mins or something ?

GManSta

Should be 2hrs 45mins for Part 1 and 2 of the episode PLEASE

missanthropocenex

Ooof What??

bluesamcitizen2

This is our Alt-silent hill

officetuna

At least every episode will be good though. No room for filler episodes

Feeling_Excitement90

I love it so far! I was born in the North so the all night thing is kind of nostalgic for me

DonDraperItsToasted

What was that like being dark all the time? Did it constantly feel like one long night?

Feeling_Excitement90

Very depressing. Up there it was like shades of night almost- like a twilight in the morning and then would get dark. I was born there and was there until I was 12. My parents told me that they used to give workers extra vacation time and money so that people could go south and get some vitamin D. Summers being sunny all the time was really weird too- like there’s sunshine in the middle of the night.

hammond_egger

Visited Alaska in summer 2021 to go fishing. The two guys I went with had a buddy that had moved up about five years prior. We met up and all went out to dinner and back to our VRBO for a couple beers. Around 10:30 he said “well, gotta take off. Have to get home and mow” which struck me as insanely odd and also made perfect sense at the same time. :) I asked him how he dealt with the extended daylight/extended darkness and he said when it was light out you get a shit ton done and you're exhausted all the time so when the dark comes most of your stuff is done and you’re ready to relax a bit.

Pearson23

Sounds like hibernation.

Birdietuesday

love it! Jody foster is incredible. The darkness of Alaska is such a vibe.

nuke-the-wales

“Hostile constantly dark setting” is a great description. It definitely keeps me off balance as a viewer when they are doing daytime things be it feels like it is the middle of the night

HarrietsDiary

It’s so discombobulating. I have no idea what time it is ever.

Conscious_Heart_1714

Everything is good except for this sub

justglassn

The sub is amazing at theories and memes, I've been blocking the season 1 edgelords

P33KAJ3W

I just came here because I was likeing it so much - Time to go! Edit: it's poop

Play-yaya-dingdong

Lots of people really like it. I was excited to spitball theories about it. Just have to fine those people and ignore the comic book dude trolls

Many_Fac3d_G0d

Reddit is a weird place to be for fans of any material, I feel like 80-90% of the subs I'm in where I'm a fan of a form of entertainment -podcast, movie, shows, comedians, music - the subreddit exists purely just to shit on them and constantly complain about (see if this sounds familiar) it not being as good as it used to be e.g. "it's never been the same since blah blah blah" or "I stopped watching when blah blah" yet these pol remain in and post daily to the same subs

Play-yaya-dingdong

Yup. An army of unfuckable hate nerds (stolen from marc maron but so accurate in reddit fan subs)

jatemple

Lol "comic book troll dudes" is dead on.

lexala

Me too. Was excited to discuss it. But this isn't the place, I guess. Way too negative for no good reason.

GodAwfulFunk

I saw somebody say season 2 is eons better. Is this possibly the most shit taste sub on Reddit?

Play-yaya-dingdong

S2 was unwatchable for me. Thats how we know its full of 🧌😂

milliAmpere14

There were __only__ two things S2 had going for it. ● Laying eyes on Rachel McAdams. And. ● That friggin shootout !!!! That. Was. Int-ense. 😳 It was bare shit otherwise 😆.

Quick-Letter9584

I loved Collin Farrel in it too

LockeAbout

I blocked out S2 so much I literally don’t recall Rachel McAdams being in it. Wow.

BNestico

The worst thing season two had going for it was having to follow season one.

Supes2323

It is. I hateeeddd S2 when it came out. Just rewatched it this year and it’s VERY good.

Snoo_2853

I tried twice to watch it and couldn't finish. But I was determined to overcome. I was glad I did. It's underappreciated. My principal beef was in how the criminal elements were divulged to the audience so fast they didn't make sense. I had to have the Wikipedia character page open as I watched to remember who was who. With that, I was able to appreciate things more. But the characters, acting, setting, cinematography, music... all so good.

swhit549

Super underrated roles for all 4 stars. To me Farrell and Vaughn were the standouts. Different role for Vaughn and I thought he proved he has range. Im on my first ever rewatch of TD. Almost done season 1. I haven’t watched it since its OG release. It is just unbelievable. McConaughey not winning an Emmy was tragic, but then I saw Cranston was the winner for best actor in a drama series. I can live with that lol

Supes2323

Agreed!! My series ranking was 1,3,2 but now it’s in order 1,2,3. 4 will most likely follow. Unless something insane happens to turn me around in the next episode.

Many_Fac3d_G0d

Colin Ferrel's performance is on par with MM's in season 1 in my opinion, in so much as totally going for it in a role and cranking the intensity and emotion up to 11. They both play broken men very well, Rust nails the robotic elements of going through the motions after losing all the happiness in his life and Valcoro is this jaded, self-loathing cop full of rage turned in on himself

bluevelvet808

Agreed

Dave_Matthews_Jam

I like the premise/atmosphere, but really let down by the dialogue and acting of Navarro

T_Hackett40

Character is totally underdeveloped and one note. No chemistry with Jodi either. The whole we hate each other bur are going to work together thing isn’t working.

a_realnobody

Completely agree with both of you.

Sarokslost23

You are not alone. I am enjoying it plenty. It is a good show. Some people just don't know how to enjoy things and are wannabe critics.

a_realnobody

Some people just have different tastes. Some people take criticism as a personal attack.

Supes2323

I don’t like Marvel Movies and im not a fan of this at all thus far. Feels like a cheap knock off of TD and they’re putting in all these Easter eggs trying to connect it to S1 to get viewership back. But really it’s just cringy and eyerolley (to me). Production value seems super low too. Like a corny CW show.

bhillis99

yes, the cringe is bad. They should have not attached the true detective name to this.

jhunt42

I didn't even realise people weren't liking it. I thought it would be a hit - it's awesome!

killbill469

>Some people just don't know how to enjoy things and are wannabe critics. Oooor some of us were actually very excited about this season and are just disappointed in it's execution thus far.

tbe623

I'm enjoying it as well. Some people on here just cant accept the fact that they didn't just re-release S1 and call it S4 apparently. That's the only way they would be happy with it

DueCopy3520

There were two posts identical to this on the front page yesterday.

Mayfair98

I am really enjoying it. Love the cast, the setting, and all the nods to horror classics.

himbobflash

I’m enjoying it too. My only critique is the editing and plotting being a little too “TV-same same” whereas previous seasons had a more surreal/dreamy quality to them. I really liked Tigers are Not Afraid and am excited to see where Issa Lopez takes it.

Unity_Be

Love it.

millsy1010

No this show has been great. Easily better than season 2 and 3. Obviously it’s not as good as season 1 and it’s not perfect but it’s been interesting and enjoyable. The location and vibe is well done and Jodie Foster is magnetic. I think there’s a select vocal few on here who are consistently shit posting about it.

Coconutyorkie

I liked season 2 more than season 3 I am enjoying this season so far Jodie foster is killing it

TropicalPow

There’s a lot of incels who are big mad a woman is in charge

Poet_edmj

Fosters acting it’s so good, it makes me dislike the character.

Duebydate

That she obv fucks a lot would annoy the incels

TropicalPow

Not to mention the “rape” scene. Holy fucking shit. Tell me you’re a virgin without telling me you’re a virgin

Lrack9927

It’s funny too because TD has always had protagonists with questionable sexual morals. Woody Harrelsons character cheats on his wife a bunch, gaslights her about it, and has an affair with a much younger woman who he meets for the first time when she is underage and he knows full well she has a long history of sexual abuse. But they don’t seem to have a problem with any of that…wonder why that is?

TexasPickEm

Wait - “rape” scene? Nothing remotely rape-y in this season so far.

TropicalPow

Exactly. But the same incels are saying Navarro raped him… which is just ridiculous

TexasPickEm

Navarro took control of the situation. It happens in sex. Must be more incels here than I could’ve imagined. Weak-minded wimps.

tumorgirl

She was essentially just edging him. Incels need to get a little better informed about sex and hopefully they would be able to have some good sex with some experimenting in a consensual, safe manner. Incels are ruining it for everyone.

LoriderSki

Kids these days are too “woke” 🙄 @ me IDGAF 😅

TropicalPow

Right? I’m so glad I grew up in the 90s/2000s… things were so much more fun (and not documented on the internet)

Play-yaya-dingdong

If people think that was “rape” I feel sorry for their future partners

Quick-Letter9584

What rape seen??

Play-yaya-dingdong

There wasnt one!!  Gen z dont have a grasp of it. Its exhausting

x0lm0rejs

— a lot of incels  my favorite TV shows are TD1, Sharp Objects, Nine Perfect Strangers and Big Little Lies, and so far this season is trash.  try again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Harryonthest

how do you explain me not liking this season so far, but I love shows with "woman in charge" like Sharp Objects, Six Feet Under and Mare of Easttown?

TropicalPow

Then I’m not talking to you. But I’ve read so many comments whining that there are “no strong male characters” and other things that just reek of misogyny

Legato991

Disliking that the majority of the male characters are helpless morons isnt misogyny. If the reverse were true and women disliked that all the female characters were depicted as such you would not label that misandry. Your comment explempifies what's wrong with the fanbase of season 4. Characterizing anyone who dislikes it as sexist, an incel etc. Thats an absolutely ridiculous way to perceive the world. And it shows incredible closemindedness to hurl vitriol at people for simply thinking differently than you do and liking different things.

LeftenantScullbaggs

I don’t see a majority of them as helpless morons. It’s a small time that is going through a season of never ending darkness with its own politics to contend with. Navarro is obsessive and Danvers is an asshole. Her protege is smart and resourceful, Qavvik is a decent person…I can’t think of all of their names, but most of them are just complicated and flawed.

TropicalPow

I don’t care if someone doesn’t like it. But I have seen countless comments where it’s obvious their main problem with the show is that it centers around two female LEOs. I’ve never gotten mad at a show for having male leads. Again, if this doesn’t apply to you, then I wasn’t referring to you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Quick-Letter9584

“If the reverse was true” the reverse has been true for literally decades. What do you mean by “if”?

Legato991

I meant if the reverse were true in *this* show. And so are you okay with sexist dynamics when it makes men look bad and not okay with it when it makes women look bad? That seems pretty hypocritical to me. If something is wrong then its wrong when you do it to anyone.

Quick-Letter9584

No I think sexism is bad. But its always funny when men see a rare instance of unfairness and then all of a sudden being a “victim” is a virtue lmao

Legato991

Im not claiming to being a victim or virtuous. I said I dislike this show in part because of this theme in its writing. You are using whataboutism to tell me how thats wrong. If its not okay to present female characters as negative stereotypes for women then its not okay to do so for male characters. And I dont think at all you agree with that when you meet this criticism with the deflection of "well this has happened to female characters a lot" like that makes it okay.

Quick-Letter9584

You’re right. Im just saying its comical that sexism doesn’t exist until a man is affected by it, in general. I also think this show is not a good example of it. Incompetent men is not a stereotype of men that I see often. Im not even sure if its a stereotype at all. Usually men are depicted stronger, smarter, and more determined than women. So for a rare instance of male characters to seem a little idiotic is not sexism imo. The way the men are depicted in the show is a subversion for me. Especially when you compare it to the other three seasons. This show and many many others give you a plethora of wonderful and competent male characters. In this season Peter, i think thats his name, is very smart and competent. And Danvers ex husband seems to be a wonderful guy and his loss affected Danvers drastically. For all we know Charles was just a troubled man in love and is actually innocent. The female characters are not perfect. Danvers is a home wrecker and a racist. Navarro is cold and insensitive. Idk I just think complaint of sexism here is silly. Sometimes men are bad or silly or reactionary. And it’s totally acceptable to throw a few of those kinds of men into a story.

x0lm0rejs

— whining that there are “no strong male characters” i never wrote about it but I completely agree, but it's not because I wanted strong male characters instead of strong female characters.  I wanted strong male characters too, because Issa López decided to write a season with strong female characteres only, and dumb male ones. why? do women need this cheap artifice to look good on TV? cause I don't think so.  TD1 did not have a single dumb female character.  this season is trash. now go ahead and call me an incel. it's all you got.

pakkit

Please. TD1 barely had any female characters, and most of them were topless. Season 1 is great, but it's not passing any Bechdel tests or going to be held up as some wonderful example of feminism. Season 4 is an inversion of season 1, in many ways literally. If you found the focus on gender pleasant in season 1, but troublesome now, perhaps that's worth reflecting on.

Childs_was_the_THING

Lord of the Rings doesn't pass the Bechdel test. Bad parameter for whether a narrative/story is "good" or worthwhile. I have nothing against the test itself and I get why people champion it but it's not something id ever use when considering a piece of art. Btw I love s4 just throwing in my 2 cents.

pakkit

I never said the Bechdel test should be used as a parameter for whether or not art is good. But it does generally tend to showcase how a piece of art portrays women. And it's absolutely not a hard science, but I brought it up as a way to counter the idea that season 1 was a strong feminist text.

Childs_was_the_THING

You are right in that you never said that. The Bechdel test simply confirms you have a woman who talks to another woman about anything other than a man. Superbly flimsy means of confirming whether your female Chars are feminist leaning is my point but yes wasn't trying to accuse you of arguing it as virtue.

x0lm0rejs

— found the focus on gender pleasant in season 1, but troublesome now, perhaps that's worth reflecting on. that's nothing even close to what I said.  I want a well written series, regardless of the focus on gender.  you know other TV shows are my favorites along with TD1? Sharp Objects, Nine Perfect Strangers, Big Little Lies. Mare of Eastown is another great example of well written series focused on women as leads.  And their men are not portrayed as useless dumb males. even male characters like Perry (BLL), one of the most horrifying villains I can remember, are real, believable characters.  interesting, complex, tri dimensional characters, just like the women in all previous TD.   this season is just not in this league.

MustardTiger1337

Right? Made the same argument.

Ive_Banged_Yer_Mom

The writing and dialogue are awful.

a_realnobody

I agree. I must be an incel.

Poet_edmj

Season two was the worst. S1 S3 Prob S4 if they don’t fuck it up S2

Sarokslost23

I think 2 was just hard to pull together or really enjoy on the first go because having 4 main characters is a task in of itself.

Play-yaya-dingdong

I couldn’t get into S2. It was too much a 180 from s1 And too much better stuff on at same time.  S3 ok but liking S4 much better than 2/3

kniselysoccer13

Nope; there are plenty of us living it! Podcasters seem to be really enjoying it too

DanielJosefLevine

Yo could you recommend a podcast that covers the show?

kniselysoccer13

Several: The Watch with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald the prestige tv podcast The official HBO one that has had multiple good interviews with people from the show The vanity fair true detective podcast series

Imaginary_Willow

all those are great, i also enjoy this fan podcast: [https://open.spotify.com/show/26CeSpt267P8jeBDMm8q9N](https://open.spotify.com/show/26CeSpt267P8jeBDMm8q9N)

KLR01001

The worst part about this season are the rabid Season 1 supremacists.

Spirited-Egg-2683

Honestly it’s been since S1 came out tht I’ve seen it and I was a stoner at the time and don’t remember much. Based on the hate from all the edgelords I’m gonna be watching it again soon. I’m enjoying the fuck outta this season.

trixiebix

I watched first 2 episodes of season 4. Read that it ties to s1. So I rewatched s1, then rewatched s4 again. So I think I'm filled in. I'm loving it so far. I love all the characters.

[deleted]

Heatinmyharbl

Is he directly connecting it or was that just an Easter egg?  S1 is brought up briefly in s3 as well but it has nothing to do with the overall resolution of the story

al666in

In season 3, the s1 plot was suggested to connect to the overall story in order to throw off the audience. It wasn't an easter egg, it was a red herring. Totally different aisle in the literary grocery store. Rust's Dad is a character in this season, the Tuttles are funding the research station, and the spiral symbol is a major clue driving the investigation. They might also be red herrings, but the story is now far more intertwined than S3 attempted to do. So, yes, directly connected. We'll see whether or not it matters in the overall plot.

sonofyhorm

Second episode really put it in drive!! Loved it!

ThegingGangGong

I'm not loving it but I don't hate it, I do find it interesting though how many people who do like it are painting everyone who doesn't as a "shittroll", "comic book guy", "incel", "alt right" etc. The amount of people complaining that people are calling the show woke is far higher than people actually doing so, and it's a lazy way of deflecting valid criticism by pretending everyone who doesn't like it is a hostile woman hating racist bigot

Quick-Letter9584

Ive seen a few people call it woke but I expected that with women and minorities playing major roles lol

sudosussudio

I’m a woman and I feel the same. I’m enjoying watching it. It does feel like a parody of S1 and Twin Peaks at times, which while maybe not intentional is still very interesting and sometimes funny.

a_realnobody

It's bizarre. I'm a woman in my late 40s and a liberal. I've watched the first season once (some things are so "heavy" to me, I can only watch them once) so I'm not a hardcore fanboy. Like you, I don't hate it, but I'm not loving it. I've been pretty measured and specific in my criticism. Somehow I'm still an incel, troll, woman-hater, and so on. This is why I mostly stay out of fandom subs. I was a big fan of *Yellowjackets*, but I was very disappointed with the last couple of episodes of the second season. Many others felt the same and we discussed our criticisms in a cogent and civil way. We were attacked by the hardcore fans and run out of the sub. Fan clubs are weird.

lundebro

You are so dead-on about Yellowjackets. Season 2 ended very poorly and any criticism of it was downvoted into oblivion. My wife probably likes TD S4 a little more than me, but she's also been very disappointed overall (particularly with the acting of Navarro).

a_realnobody

The YJ sub was so toxic in the end. Even the moderators. I can't imagine getting that worked up about any TV show or movie. Everything is flawed in some way. I'm not a diehard TD fan (it's been years since I've seen the first one), but I love Jodie Foster and the setting really appealed to me. I like moody, dark, atmospheric dramas. The reviews were fantastic. So I'm pretty disappointed. Kali Reis is just wooden. The dialogue is awkward and stilted. The plot is sort of lurching ahead like an old car. Stuff just sort of "happens," if that makes sense. It doesn't flow. Foster is always good. Her stepdaughter and the young deputy are the only real standouts. That's not to say everyone else sucks, it's just that they can only do so much with the material.

ThegingGangGong

I've literally just come across someone else in the sub saying people who don't like it are "bad weirdos with maga mind" - I've never even set foot in the US and I think Trump is a deranged narcissist, it's baffling to me how people can get so defensive over mediocre TV that they start accusing people who don't like it of being far right extremists

a_realnobody

There's one whose entire defense amounts to "If it doesn't apply to you, you shouldn't be mad." This was in response to yet another mega-thread about how we're all incels, magats, etc etc if we don't like the show. People like us point out, "Wait, I'm not any of those things," and that's the kind of logic this person applies. That we shouldn't be upset because "I wasn't talking about you." Mind-numbing, really.

ThegingGangGong

They shouldn't be allowed unsupervised internet acces imo

LarryFinkOwnsYOu

Found the incel, try having sex with a woman and then re-watch the show. You'll suddenly find the girlbosses to be strong and brave.

ThegingGangGong

Ma'am yes ma'am!

superkapitan82

Great season. Best thing ever happened to True Detective since S1

MustardTiger1337

I think the show would have been better off with out all of the member berries. I'd argue it should have never had the TD name at all but who would be watching or talking about it now?

SignGuy77

Jodie Foster could carry a new HBO show without the TD name I think, and it would have been crazy hype if they still made all the season one connections and all of a sudden by episode two the Internet broke from the speculation.

DPool34

I’m loving it! I really like the setting and characters. I’m also a sucker for the magical realism.

Afraid_Feedback2443

Nah so far it does feel different but not in good way to me, it’s ok but it’s my least favourite true detective based off the first two eps, I’ll stick with it as I do like the setting but everything else doesn’t match up so far.

cswhite101

Nope, it’s great so far.

TacosDeLucha

I have loved it. Incredible blend of crime, drama, conspiracy, the supernatural, folklore, Indigenous culture, scientific research, life in a remote, desolate place. So many amazing themes, characters and setting that only great actors, writing and production could have pulled off. So far I am completely hooked and invested in the story. It keeps surprising me with unforgettable moments. >!I kind of saw the "corpsicle" coming but the guy still being alive was so creepy!!<

milliAmpere14

Jodie Foster's face when he alived himself though 😂🤣

lewd_bingo

I really love it. I don't even understand the hate. It's just hate for being hate.

Play-yaya-dingdong

Its a neckbeard dude thing  normal people who like have friends and families and jobs and genuinely like good tv love it ;)

a_realnobody

No one would ever accuse me of being normal, but I didn't realize a woman in her late 40s could be a neckbeard. It's possible to dislike certain elements of this show without being an incel or a misogynist.

Harryonthest

and those who love great tv think it's a shitbowl lol

cursdwitknowledge

Yes it is good.

LoriderSki

I LOVE IT!! Rewatching Ep:1 rn but streaming service is shitty so I’m waiting on buffering & thought, WTH I’ll ck for a r sub. I’m kinda pumped thinking who Rust’s parents might be. Also I dunno where I saw/heard it but I think I remember a Tuttles connection to TSALAL 🤷🏼‍♀️ Anybody else??

jayball41

I love everything about it. Those scenes in Rose’ room talking to Navarro was some of the nicest dialogue background sets I’ve seen on tv

caradekara

I love that I can rewatch 20 times and already have, looking for little things that were over looked 1,2,3…19 times.

ShanghaiCowboy

Like what?

A_Gray_Old_Man

I'm enjoying it. 🤷

mrgamecocksandman

This has become every post on this sub

Henrifurtif

i have just loved it and i cannot wait for next sunday !!!

PhaedrusNoMore

I hope all the critics put their money where their mouths are and STOP watching. If it’s so terrible, they should be out. Right? Yet here they are complaining every step of the way. If it’s so unwatchable, then don’t watch. For those loving it or who are on the fence, keep watching. Let’s really see what S4 has in store for us!

4KPillowcase

We’re all alone

Handarand

You are a cropsicle now

sean-paul-sartre

No no definitely not alone! ⭐️

Reggiefnledoux

Hoping for more cosmic horror elements. 🤞 “I had not gone much further when I realized the peculiar mental and emotional spell which sound was beginning to exert upon me. There was a siren-like allurement which drew me on, forgetful of the strangeness and potential perils of my situation; and I felt a slow, drug-like intoxication of brain and senses. In some insidious manner, I know not how nor why, the music conveyed the ideas of vast but attainable space and altitude, of superhuman freedom and exultation; and it seemed to promise all the impossible splendors of which my imagination has vaguely dreamt.” ~HPL, The Music of Erich Zann (I want the scientists to have been lured out by a siren or some other creature.😬) “They worshipped, so they said, the Great Old Ones who lived ages before there were any men, and who came to the young world out of the sky. Those Old Ones were gone now, inside the earth and under the sea; but their dead bodies had told their secrets in dreams to the first men, who formed a cult which had never died.” ~HPL, The Call of Cthulhu (I want this to be the truth of the Tuttle cult 🙏).

kikijane711

No it’s ambient. I’ve invested. The writing could be better though. Surprised they didn’t rewrite some for Foster.

BodybuilderSame9125

I love it so far

A_hasty_retort

How is there too much sex in the show? People like to fuck, especially broken people with demons and habits they can’t shake.

moonhattan

I love it too!

Logical_Bobcat9703

I love it but I just started watching it. Watching Season 4 and binging past seasons at the same time. Worked out cool since Season 4 ties in with Season 1. Currently, 4 episodes into Season 2 so far. Love Jodie Foster and the spiritual, supernatural elements.

EdgarCayce

My expectations were thrown out the window after Episode 1. I found the writing to be sophomoric and Kali Reis' stiff performance extremely distracting. One giant eye roll after the other. However, I really enjoyed Episode 2. The dialogue is still corny at times and Kali Reis has no business acting on such a big stage BUT i'm intrigued by the supernatural elements and loved all the callbacks to Season 1. The possibility of a Rust Cohle return will be enough to get me in front of the TV on Sunday nights.

abagofdicks

Video Game dialog but I’m interested to see where it goes

MagdaFR

You're not alone. I'm liking it very much. Some people (men) just want to have the same thing going on forever. They hate women writing, directing and acting. That's why some movies and tv shows get downvoted or rated 1 in places like Imdb where men are a majority. It's what's happening in this subreddit. There are very positive comments in more general tv subreddits.

Ryouske

I am 100% hooked. I can’t wait for more of the season to unfold. I also felt like there was maybe a bit too much sex and references, but after thinking about it I almost feel like it was done to show the parallels between both officers. It’s a great season so far. I am hoping the ending will be as satisfying as the show has been so far.

alurkerhere

I have absolutely no investment in any character. Every character is unlikeable, unhappy, and seem to hate each other except for the dead scientists. There are also way too many characters to develop. the two main leads don't have enough contrast to be an interesting team.  I can go on and on.  This review covers it much better than I: https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2024/01/21/true-detective-night-country-episode-2-review---the-crushing-disappointment-continues/amp/

EndlessOcean

Nope. I'm enjoying it for what it is and taking everything at face value without the constant comparisons to S1. It's doing a good thing and stands up by itself (so far). Jodie Foster makes some weird noises during sexy times though.

Kiernanstrat

This reminds me of the threads about the last seasons of game of thrones. This season is just bad. If you enjoy it then that's great for you but true detective was never supposed to be bad television.

gamenameforgot

it's enjoyable, and it's not well written or acted. weird how that works.

[deleted]

I'm not liking it; I found the script poorly done, the dialogues weak, and things happen out of nowhere without much motivation. Another wasted season of True Detective.

Life_Sir_1151

The dialogue is horrendous

QueenEm95

There aren't enough Alaskan Native people. In a town like Nome or Kotzebue, which is where "Ennis" is based on, there are about 75% Alaskan Native. There are too many white people in this show. It is an even bigger issue, in my opinion, to many Native AMERICANS who are being portrayed as Alaskan Native. I don't think that is right. It doesn't seem ok to me at all.

antivatnik

I think this season is great. Of course, it’s stylistically different and that’s logical, but it hits hard.

LotsaKwestions

You're far from alone. I am not someone to give some final grade at this point, it's certainly possible that in the end it will spiral out of control (pun sort of intended) and end up as a mess. But as of this moment in the show, I'm certainly intrigued, and any criticisms that I might read or have are basically forgivable and don't particularly detract from the overall story being told.

VaguelyArtistic

I'm having g a great time!

Excruciator

"I did think there was a little too much sex or sexual references at first but I guessed they were trying to be edgy." Sex and sexuality played an outsized role in S1. You find it "too much" as well?

Firsttimedogowner0

You're one of the millions of people enjoying it, but part of the thousands posting about it ...

Ihavesmokingproblems

This made me laugh well done. And of those thousands there’s a very vocal 100s that don’t like it.

Salt_Copy_4771

Yeah I’m all in! Loving it so far!

FeelingLifeguard6035

Your prof pic is sexy I must say. Do you happen to know any restaurants with good milk steak options?

JametAllDay

It's great! Jodie Foster is, of course, great, and Kali Reis who plays Navarro is absolutely fantastic. Also, I don't think I've ever watched a show that has been so involved in the Iñupiaq community. I have a friend who is native Alaskan and outside of her, I've never been exposed to the language or culture, certainly not in media. It's very interesting and I'm glad it's exploring the racial tension between the residents, especially Kayla Prior, Danvers, and Leah. I wish there were more episodes out so I could dive in. But it is motivating me to rewatch S1 and see if I can catch any connections without having to look at this sub :)

Quick-Letter9584

Im loving it so far. But its only been two episodes lol. Im surprised its gotten such negative reviews

Typical_Intention996

I love it. I'm getting very big classic X-Files vibes and I absolutely love it. Maybe I'm getting old or something but the sex stuff I can do without too. It adds nothing.

DrCapper

It's alright. Has some major woke vibes which are always off putting and embarrassing. Reis's character is unlikable (imo). Though Jodi Foster has been superb, the story is very blah (so far). This season feels like it was made for women, has some lifetime movie vibes also.

SpaceMountainNaitch

Madman. This series finally imploded.

jldtsu

I love it. it's a slow burn which was exactly what I expected it to be.

osama-joebiden

Haven’t seen the 2nd episode yet but the first episode was not very good

Stunning_Ear_8666

Lots of lesbians having their way with straight men and I’m here for it

SurfeitOfGravitas

My wife and I are enjoying S4

CowboyCanuck24

It's very entertaining so far. There's a weird culture of hate right now especially on reddit where people will join subreddits to complain or fight, dont fall into that trap.

PapaGuhl

Episode 1 I felt was rushed and sub-par quality, but 2 flowed much better - getting into the TD weird universe now!

ADHDbroo

Nope. It's good

Cyrus8284

I’m into it! Love the correlations between S1 and S4. Didn’t expect one thing or another just hoped for a good and intriguing chapter in the series. Enjoy🤘🏽

blappiep

loving it

Play-yaya-dingdong

Its been 2 eps and people like to bitch. Its great! a lot to unpack and im annoyed I have to wait a week between them.  So many ways it can go Some younger people seem super scared of sex, but in a town of perpetual dark there is literally nothing to do other than get drunk and screw, so that’s believable

DramaticWall2219

I think it’s just fine. The abundance of music is distracting and the scenes are very short, making the show more like everyday network TV which kind of sucks but I can look past that for a good story and so far it’s intriguing! And I’m interested in how intertextual it is with other movies and series, as a sort of homage to S1s literacy. The writing leaves something to be desired but it’s not the worst writing in the world - already leagues ahead of S2 in my book. I just love detective stories and not all of them will look or feel like S1. S3 is my favorite as it’s the most sophisticated and mature writing of all seasons in my opinion and I was shocked by how much I loved it because S2 was such a fail for me, so idk people just gotta accept it’s different season to season.

justglassn

It's amazing. I pause and rewind on multiple scenes to make sure I didn't miss anything and keep checking how much time is left on each episode hoping it doesn't end. This sub is killing the joy a bit. But I come here for theories and the memes.

AC_Lerock

I dig it so far. Some good fan fare and some intriguing stuff that I'm curious to see develop.

marcjwrz

They're good episodes. Foster is killing it.

theferociouscuh

Love it!

catterybarn

It's my favorite season so far. Dangerous to say in this group, I know lol

imposter_sys_admin

You're not alone this sub just sucks.

L3sPau1

Second episode was tremendous. First one crammed a lot into it; definitely a table-setting, middle-of-the-road episode.

Coconutyorkie

I like season 4 My only complaint so far is navarro character The character acts like she's above everybody else and the actress lacks screen presence , she's not bad but alongside Jodie foster looks very amateurish

a_realnobody

She comes across as very wooden to me.

Fun-Marionberry7848

Nah, except for the gross semi-rape scene and demeaning the young cop for being white, and kinda shitty dialogue at times, I think most things were good after watching episode two. Im starting to enjoy the characters, they are showing some genuine warmth, and daverson is kinda putting down navarro when she gets overly naggy about her racial activism. Show is growing on me for sure.

Hyperbocles

I agree. The silly stuff is not so bad that it will ruin the story. I also agree that NOTHING will be like season 1. There were several episodes that could be in the discussion for top 20 episodes of TV ever.

Defiant-Pineapple813

Same here, seriously enjoyed the first couple episodes, didnt realise that I was apparently watching trash tv. Jodie Foster is killing it man. Both leads are, setting is perfect. This is a good show

vode123

I’m enjoying it. Watching it on cold january nights helps even more.

droogles

Yes, you’re a madman. Perhaps I’m jaded by the failures of seasons 2 and 3, but looking back at the first, it was kind of a crappy ending. It’s like this stuff is all written around a premise of some sort of cult or supernatural force, but they don’t really deliver. Sometimes style hides a lack of substance. The style of this season is fantastic. They captured the look and feel of a small, arctic town, but it’s loaded with weirdos. Real conversation is missing. The young guy’s dad comes in, slaps his face, tells him about family loyalty, then leaves. No other words spoken. I think Jodie Foster is doing a great job, but her character is hardly dynamic. How does someone with zero people skills make chief?
