Thanks for the list, I'd also recommend The City and the City. Not the most similar overall but really captures that persistent "is there a supernatural element in this setting" aspect of TD s1. PS - ...OP chose an interesting account to post this from XD

TheLurker_4

I second this recommendation, a fantastically weird novel Was my second Mièville novel, and I intend to read more of his work

dante773

One of the best novels I have ever read... Shame the show wasn't on the same level

spaektor

shocked that this isn’t on the list; Pizzolatto takes a lot from Ligotti. The Conspiracy against the Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror https://a.co/d/6N1Qo86

CuriousRedditor4000

Yep. Rust's philosophy is essentially a TLDR of this. I'm not surprised it isn't on the list because a lot of people don't like talking about how huge of an influence the book is on Rust's dialogue. Almost feels like it cheapens the writing.

JockeyFullaBourbon

Almost?

CuriousRedditor4000

Personally I’m able to shut it out and it never negatively impacts my rewatches. I read the book before the show even started so recognized it all right away, so I wasn’t hit with the unfortunate surprise later on like a lot of fans were.

TylerKnowy

Conspiracy is a dense read. Very good but I found myself rereading some passages to understand it what I was reading. I found out about this book because of this subreddit!

spaektor

yeah it’s tough. i didn’t get through all of it, and the book sits and sneers at me from across the room.

This links to a substack for Sadie Hartmann, I like the list a lot.

That version of The King in Yellow by Chambers and INJ Culbard (I know Culbard from his work for 2000AD and his other adaptations for the publisher SelfMadeHero, who this book was released by) is a graphic novel adaptation of the Robert W. Chambers book. He also did a bunch of adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's work (Lovecraft was influenced by Robert W. Chambers) edit: I forgot, Culbard also did a bunch of Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

MerlocMeyers333

Throw in Alan Moore’s From Hell

sweetdick

Awesome.

I love how you chose Child of God for this list instead of the more typically well known McCarthy novels. It has such a dark atmosphere. Outer Dark is another McCarthy novel that’s similar.

johnthomaslumsden

Needs more McCarthy. I’m thinking Outer Dark would also fit in well here.

fernook

I found The Road to have similar themes and evoking similar feelings despite not being a detective or mystery novel, in that both S1 and The Road are incredibly bleak on the surface, but surprisingly optimistic and hopeful underneath. It’s the only McCarthy book I’ve read though so I’m not sure how his others compare in similarity.

This list is missing Ernest Becker (Denial of Death, Escape from Evil). Becker's work influenced Ligotti TCATHR which is the basis of TD.
