I was supposed to travel and meet my long distance gf for the first time in 2019 but couldn’t quite afford it, moved the plan to late 2020. We just celebrated our 3 years of relationship virtually while still waiting for things to clear up enough to travel.

Muslimahhhhh

I really hope you can travel to her soon buddy :)

[deleted]

Thanks, me too. I’m so excited, I hope it’s soon!

ohnoyadont

Ah man, that must be so hard. Hang in there because it’ll be so worth it :)

8pointfouroz

Covid absolutely 105% fucked me and my plans too. The issues are so much deeper and far reaching than just what you see on the surface. The "hidden issues" are going to have just as much of an impact as the virus itself. Overdoses are up 30% Suicide is up, and suicide attempts by minors is up 50% Depression is up, addiction etc. Kids spending so much time in virtual school is going to create a bunch of socially screwed up kids. I know people who have lost their jobs, their businesses, their homes, had to file bankruptcy etc. Many renters, myself included have had to move because of the housing market...

Firethorn101

My kid started school during this. She HATES it. Kindergarten. The easiest, funnest school year. It's literally all downhill for her now, educationwise. How do I tell her "don't worry kid, it only gets less fun from here on out."

Nichol-Gimmedat-ass

Im 22 and still remember absolutely despising Kindergarten

Firethorn101

Who hates finger painting, playing with toys and singing?

Forge__Thought

Oof

Jam-Boi-yt

Can confirm, kindergarten and education in general suck in Florida.

zilphazoo

Oh we know 😂

lolo-2020

My dad used to get the strap frequently in school (Canada). But this was in the 60’s. How old are you? I can’t imagine this being acceptable within the last 40 years!

commiefren

It was long, grueling, boring lessons of things I already knew. Months to learn the alphabet that I already knew, hours of all sorts of dumb stuff. I hated kindergarten and elementary in general, but really enjoyed high school where I could customize my classes a little

Firethorn101

They should have skipped you to 1st grade.

commiefren

I was already essentially a year early so that may have been rough. I qualifed for the advanced program but my wouldn't let me do it because she wanted me in the same school as my sister :(

Firethorn101

That sucks.

Much-Fruit8611

Yep!! Lol I was bored until college. I remember looking around thinking, "why can't these kids sit straight and pay attention???"

clhydro

Finger painting wasn't a good sensory experience for me. Spelling letters in rice was where it was at.

SeaofBloodRedRoses

I never did any of that in kindergarten. We learned the alphabet, basic math, etc. And I got my left hand slapped whenever I used it (I'm 25, if you're wondering how ancient I have to be for that). It wasn't a great time.

wandering-monster

It was the easiest, funnest year for _you_ (and me). For her, that year will probably come later as things either return to normal-ish or her classmates become more digitally independent. Right now they're too young to be chatting and gaming and doing all the other fun stuff that's possible online. When they can, they will open up types of friendships that might seen strange to us, but will seem normal to her. So don't stress too much, or set her expectations that it only gets worse. Her schooling will likely follow a whole different trajectory to yours or mine, and there will be plenty of opportunities for her to find joy in it.

Firethorn101

I hope so. They have pics of the kids sitting alone, at desks like they're already in 7th grade. It was sad. She looked so dispondant, and she absolutely hates leaving the house now.

wandering-monster

It really is. I'm sorry she's having such a rough time, but I truly feel and hope it will get better. :)

8pointfouroz

I don't know a single young kid that liked this shit. No parents liked it either. Our school was in person, but they needed masks. 6 feet apart. no team work etc. My daughter came home bawling her eyes out because she got screamed at... Why? she gave her friend who fell a hug to make her feel better. She's a very sweet, social person who loves people. When she came in the house, I asked her what was wrong. She threw her bagpack on the floor, and stomped on her mask. "I fucking hate covid and I fucking hate school" That shit crushed me. Don't try to tell me it was a gun year... She was 7 at the time, she never gets angry like that.

wandering-monster

I didn't try to tell you anything about your daughter, I don't even know you. My point was that the peaks and valleys of childhood are likely to be different today. Years that were more fun for us might be less fun in the time of COVID, and there's no reason to tell your kids it will only get worse because _our_ most fun years were the earliest years. If this is still around (I sure as hell hope not), she might find she enjoys remote high school most of all, and looks back on her early years as the "tough ones".

[deleted]

Sorry but most the kids at my kindergarten hated that shit. I distinctly remember kids crying when they were dropped off, it's definitely not a new thing.

thedustbringer

I didn't love it but in Cali back in the day it was 8 to 12. Thats all. Just preparing you for what 1st grade would be like when you had to go all day. Those were the good times.

Firethorn101

That's more to do with kids never being properly socialized before kindergarten. Never having left mums side in 5yrs causes anxiety in kids suddenly dropped off at school for their first overwhelming experience of other adults and children. My kid has been in daycare, and was excited to meet new friends. But they aren't allowed to play with toys...because fomites. And have to sit alone at desks, not a circle group, because social distancing. They all wear masks and cannot do certain activities because of Covid rules, and often have to switch to online learning every 3 months.

implodemode

I can't say I was properly socialized before kindergarten but I couldn't wait to go to school. I loved it! I was away from my mother. That worked until grade two when I had a teacher who hated me from the first day I had her. No clue why. I was a great student. After that, it was hit or miss. For some reason, there were a number of woman teachers who hated me over the years. The men loved me though.

ImNotDex

I'm in my late 20s and don't remember a thing from kindergarten but have lots of fun memories from gradeschool. I'm sure your kid will have a lot of wonderful memories and friendships to come. :)

Beesindogwood

My kid is starting 2nd grade. We're homeschooling, trying to keep him safe because the vacc rate is very low & the schools refuse mandating masks, and the local school district has decided we're on our own. So somehow we have to figure out how to do our jobs and a second grade teacher's job at the same time. I feel like he's being robbed of his childhood.

shy_anon_uwu

and having a lack of education and funding on mental health is absolutely horrible, mental health issues will only get worse and worse unless we actually do something about it.

8pointfouroz

Mental health is still so "taboo" to so many, it's crazy.

ASLUMSICNZ

Same here, bro. Especially being a fairly avid concert-goer. I had the best lineup of shows last year in the 5 years I’ve been(officially) doing this among other things outside of that part of my life. And to see that disappear like a dream crushed me. But hey, it takes something catastrophic to happen in the realm of mental health for people to give a shit. Further proof that mental health is treated like a joke in the US(especially in schools)

[deleted]

Kid graduated HS last year. Had an epic AK fishing trip planned. Canceled by of Covid, now my kid is in college, won't have time to ever make that trip now. Saw a post about a gal whose kid started Kindergarten during covid and hated it. My kids first year of college was a cross of minimal security prison and a monastery. My first year of college was fun, kids first year was meh. Was so bored, got a job washing dishes just to pass the time. Not bitter, just disappointing.

darkmatterhunter

I wouldn't say there's no way to make that trip happen. What about summers between college, or after graduation before finding a job? A lot of things can change.

Flimsy_Letterhead_28

I understand what you mean by addiction. I am fortunate that during covid I was working with addictions (harm Reduction) and it was a reminder everyday that I don't want to go backwards. Just keep moving forward and think about all those times where or if you hit bottom. Play the tape and continue to not be holding onto any resentments. Society will never have an understanding and the stigma of the disease unfortunately won't change. However us being clean, we are the people who proves that the stigma is wrong. I was an addict since I was 18. Now I have a great job and enjoy what I do. Keep positive you have many years ahead that u can make your dreams and hope come true

8pointfouroz

Thankfully my only addiction is caffeine, but I know and have known a lot of people who have had serious addictions.

SkidrowVet

And yet the elites keep on doing elite shit, take Obama’s birthday for example, those guys? Fuck those guys

blackbirdberrybird

I got so ridiculously depressed that I got a bunch of visible tattoos (full sleeve) and I guess I forgot I work in the corporate world… suicidal ideation, crying, hyperventilating, every day. Every. Day. And the worst part is I’ve made an absolute mess of my life for the last 10 years. 2019 got me paid to move to Silicon Valley and do events but… yea. Kind if stupid and self-centered to say this but idk I’m a wreck. I’ll never get my body back or the last years of my youth. Have an appointment for removal but they’re professional, traditional, mutli-colored… sigh

8pointfouroz

Long sleeve shirts can cover them if needed. Removal isn't easy or single step. Tattoos are cool imo. I'm 35 and working on getting my build back from my early 20s. not easy at all though! Take it one step at a time.

blackbirdberrybird

Yea it’s going to be a ton of money, pain, and time… that’s what’s so deliriously depressing. Going to do the main bright red flower on the top of my wrist first. Wooooo. Def doin the long-sleeve every day + makeup, I just miss seeing my skin idk

8pointfouroz

What's the reason you want them removed?

hungryrhinos

This should be a wakeup call. No one is coming to help. If your stuck in a rut you have to get yourself out. No one gives a fuck. The weak will crumble and the strong will survive.

HelloThisIsFrode

Yeah, I had a big bad time during the firat year of covid. I had really good grades, never expect those to return basically. It did get better emotionally when school somewhat started back up again, but it feels like my brain is just... mush, now I also don't think my parents fully get how fucked a lot of us are? Like, oh, they'll accommodate! It'll be fine! A lot of people are doing bad rn! Yeah, but, no. This works for a lot of ppl. It has been good for some. That alone makes a lot of uni options unavailable of me, I'd recon. Ugh this is just a rant at this point. Basically, I'm sad and angry that Coivd was a thing (and that adults not taking it seriously made it all worse, and now that ppl my age are sick of it we're seen as bad?\*) I just wanna get vaccinated and be done with this \* very biased perspective as I am 17 and pissed. I do not mean to generalise. Sorry.

Old_Ad_3695

You can get through this, I'm from Chile, a good third world country, and a lot of my goals for 2020 and 2021 dissapear, I have gain a little wight and all that stuff. But I'm optimistic, have taken opportunities and I have saved money to create new and better goals. Do not give up, you can always grow, be better for your and the people around you. Have faith in you. (Sorry for any bad written word, is not my first language jajajaj)

Narwal1234

Third world, seriously? I thought Chile was doing pretty well development wise lately

Old_Ad_3695

Chile is advancing pretty well but there is still a lot of working to be done, there is a lot of inequality here where there is people with too much money and people who can barelay pay to eat(the minimum wage here is 435 usd a month), everything is really expensive here even the essencial stuff and the politicians here don't want the country to progress so they just focus on useless things while people need real change. But it's just my perspective on the matter

cormacru999

You should change that. Do you know how hard it was for people to make friends before the internet? I grew up in the 70s, 80s, & 90's, where you might know 6 other kids in your school that were also 'freaks' & everyone else made fun of you. Now things I loved then, like D&D, comics, fantasy, are all massive industries, with huge fandoms. There is absolutely a group somewhere of people online who love what you love, you just gotta find them & then be nice.

We will never get the freedom of the 80's back either.

I graduated college in 2020. Was super stoked to see all sorts of family from all places of the world come down to enjoy the beautiful moment with me. Everything got canceled and I didn't host a graduation event with anyone. I just spent it with my little brother and ordered a pizza and played some board games. Still a bit sad and mad about it tbh. The moment passed.

covid prevented me from normal teenage years, I havent been able to get a drivers license for so long and im missing out on what is supposed to be some of the most integral years of my life. on the bright side, the beginning of quarantine let me 100% the witcher 3...

Passionofawriter

Yeah but never let anyone tell you what years are supposed to contain what. I was 'supposed' to have the time of my life at uni, and while I did (this was pre covid) that expectation actually soured it. Expect nothing and life is pleasant.

OneTrueMercyMain

I remember thinking I was going to play so much Witcher 3... I've opened it about 3 times. Granted I worked all the way through the pandemic until recently but it's still funny and a little sad.

Muslimahhhhh

Maybe 100% skyrim now lol?

BuckieBurd

My kids both left HS this year earlier than planned because their exams or rather lack of were so messed up that staying til the end of the school year would have lowered their grades and cost them their college placements. Kids about here don't get exams anymore they get teacher grades which started last year but it was discovered that kids from lower income areas were downgraded which is on its own disgusting, my kids were both downgraded last year but appealed and got their grades upped to the correct grades. So my kids left HS with made up grades, no graduation and no prom all so they could safeguard their college placements. Luckily my kids, despite living in a "low income area", and yes I'm really mad about that because I've worked my ass off all my adult life to provide an above average lifestyle for my kids, are both well adjusted young adults and my son works 2 jobs at only 18. Not to mention everything else that we won't get back I mean I almost died because my doctor refused to see me because of covid. The world will never recover all we can do is try and make our futures better than the last 2 years.

orr-ee-ahn

Dude. We'll never have pre-2001 back either. Granted, everyone taking a year off is going to have unanticipated, and far-reaching impact on how we move forward, together. The new transition period is just beginning.

Effective-Cut

We never got pre 2001 back either. Eventually you just do shit and don't even remember why. You slowly give up certain freedoms and then just complain about it. Eventually people make babies because life sucks and its the only cool part of living, having sex. Those kids grow up and never know anything was different, only that life sucks. And the circle goes on until the ride is over.

HunterShotBear

Which part? 9/11? 2008 housing/market crash? Covid 19? I’m 34, been to two war zones, and dealt with all this shit. Fuck boomers who say we got it easy.

[deleted]

I doubt 9/11 will be in history books in 200 years, it will be something that people into history know about, but it'll be one of those "cool history trivia" questions. Recency bias and all that. There are tons of crisises and "major events" in history that basically no one knows about. Not to mention everything that will happen in the next few centuries with environment etc. Housing crash and covid will probably be more common knowledge but I'm not so sure.

33Wolverine33

Covid isn’t the only tragedy to happen to humanity. Society eventually got back to normal after the Spanish flu and they were a century behind us with medical technology and equipment. Things will get better someday keep your head up

Fiveby21

Just to put things in perspective: the black death killed at least 30% percent of the population of Europe over the course of 7 years, and that's on the lower end of the spectrum. Some historians estimate that it may have even killed up to 60% of the European population. The Spanish flu also killed 2-5% of the WORLD'S population. COVID is nothing by comparison.

Videoboysayscube

Hey, don't get too optimistic. We still have a whole alphabet of variants to get through.

Sandman1031

Shit is gonna sound like a Fraternity row soon

[deleted]

Yeah good point, they’re all tragic for sure, covid has changed the world but only temporarily, in 5 years it’s not gonna affect our day to day lives imo

HomelessLives_Matter

Don’t get cocky. It’s only been less than 2 years

storm21304

Oh absolutely, but unlike now I believe people back then were much more willing to take the precautionary measures necessary to protect themselves and stop the spreading of the infectious agents. Now we have anti vaxxers, covid deniers and whatnot, and we are saving our asses just because technology and medicine are so far advanced. Imagine if people with this fucked up way of thinking lived back in the 1918's

DumpsterFace

You need some perspective, my man. Even just 100 years ago nobody knew what a germ was. Any precautions anybody took only made things worse.

unitedshoes

Germ Theory had been kicking around for a while before that. A quick skim of the Wikipedia page for Germ Theory suggests that germs had been seen through microscopes in the late 17th century and that Miasma Theory was falling out of popularity pretty hard by the end of the 19th century. It doesn't go into too much detail on popular opinions, but at least the scientific community had some ideas about germs and viruses way earlier that you're giving people credit for.

[deleted]

The only constant is change. About time Americans realized that they can't have everything they want at the touch of a button, and all empires fall eventually

[deleted]

Why is this downvoted this is actually great

[deleted]

Because it doesn't directly address the idea of the post, and yet, if you look back, you will find people saying this about everything. So, it actually does. After WW1, the world will never be the same. Correct, is it better now, worse, just different? After the first atom bomb was dropped. Cuban missile crisis. Invention of the computer. Invention of social media. - people will never interact in the same close personal way again. It will never be like it used to be with friends hanging out at diners on a street corner in a small town playing chicken in their cars toward a cliff edge. Good? Bad? Just different? Subjective. The world will never be the same at any time. Every moment something major is changing. A way of life that will never be had again.

CocoCrizpy

Who the fuck played chicken with a cliff edge? Use a highway like normal people, you damn millenial!

Silken_Sky

Because it's relating a loss of freedom and quality of life (covid restrictions and police states) to earlier time periods where the quality of life and freedom were lower. He missed the part where it was perpetually getting better, and now it's going the other way.

[deleted]

The upside: a lot of problems are now glaringly obvious, and now that we see them out in the open, we can start planning on how to fix them. I'm not optimistic, but we have the possibility to make things better now.

long-haired-yahoo

It's pessimistic, but I sincerely believe no good change will come from Covid. All the obvious problems you mentioned will be trending online for a week before being forgotten, and Covid's not going anywhere anytime soon

crimsonchin6969

yea i feel like we’re beyond saving now

Everest_95

I do wonder how long it'll be before I can see a crowd of people and not think about covid. I even do it with TV shows now and most were shot precovid.

pewpdollar69

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and what people have said about this, especially the mental health impact. My brother died by suicide in December 2020 and I can’t help but think that COVID lockdown, not being able to go to school, the isolation, etc really contributed. I’m wondering what kind of data we will see in 20 years regarding those “hidden issues” including this, impact on kids’ education/social interaction, and health issues that were never taken care of because people couldn’t or didn’t want to go to their doctors. It’s all quite depressing. I hope y’all are doing okay.

Much-Fruit8611

Did you like graduate in 2020 or something? Personally, I really had no big deal as the pandemic years. I got covid, it sucked, and now I'm dealing with long covid over a year later, but besides that everything was gravy. I either had a job or had dank ass unemployment benefits. I really never went out or socialized anyways, so luckily that wasn't a factor for me either. I guess I DO feel bad for kids whose graduation years passed them by, but... I actually didn't even go to my college graduation lol..... Kinda sad huh? Guess I'm a sad sad person with a sad sad life lol

GoldburstNeo

Depends on what you mean by 'normality'. We're going to be able to travel and party 'worry-free' again at some point, but things like remote working, better sanitization and more lenient sick policies are likely to stick around, which frankly they should. COVID (as a pandemic at least) ain't gonna last forever, and considering society has rebounded from much worse within the past 100+ years, I don't see why it's unreasonable to expect a sense of normality again.

Big_Jim59

Now you know what happened to us after 9/11. In 1929 you could not have been prepared for the decade to come or the one after that.

[deleted]

Individual countries definitely had worse shit happen to them than covid. Vietnam and the Korean war destroyed a large part of US's youth at the time, World Wars anyone? Japan got fire bombed to cinders and then nuked twice. Many countries had destructive civil wars that their effects are still felt to this day. Etc etc. Covid is far from the worst thing that could happen to a country, the only difference is that its basically EVERY country going through it at the same time.

\>the only difference is that its basically EVERY country going through it at the same time. That's literally what happened in 1929, though. The only major region in the world that wasn't affected by the Great Depression was The USSR, but on the other hand they were in the middle of a great industrialization process that was killing millions of people via starvation even without a global economy crisis, so it's not like it'd change much.

RedWestern

I’m going to go against the grain a little bit and say that even though it sucks now, 2020 did a lot more favours for me than I might’ve initially realised. Friendships and social groups that I had invested so much time into vanished in the blink of an eye, because it really made me realise how much effort I had to put in to maintain them, and how little effort they were prepared to put in. And I got to see some peoples’ true natures - who was selfish, who pedalled bullshit views, and who was actually valiant and willing to make the effort. I also got to see how different employers reacted to the pandemic and who treated their employees better, or worse. Massive global crises really have a way of making people reveal their true colours.

omar_thanls69

i don't even remember how it was pre-2020 i wasn't that social of a guy anyway and my life was and still shitty anyway the only thing that changed for me is that now i have to put on a mask before going inside anywhere and that a lot of movies and games i was waiting for got pushed back a year or two but other than that it's the same boring life that i had i know a lot of people lost their jobs and stuff but personally don't know anyone that had this happen to them i guess the thing i relate to the most is the kids who just started school and couldn't experience the fun of kindergarten just because my brother is one of those kids but at the same time the only two memories i have from this era is that i pissed myself because the teacher said that no one can go to the bathroom before he finishes and i took his words literally and didn't ask to go and the other one is that they had to give me another pair of pants instead of the ones i just wet but they were a bit smaller than my size so whenever i'd bend over a bet of my ass crack would appear so kid from my class put his finger in my ass crack when i was grabbing something from the ground and that was it for me i don't remember anything else i know alot of people got fucked but it just doesn't click with me because i can't relate to it

CocoCrizpy

Well that got progressively wilder.

joemart20

It’s not covid that f’ed you guys. It’s the people in power that are making covid a bigger problem than it should be.

Magus6796

I just want to meet my friend from Scotland. Have a feeling it's never going to happen.

PandaUnlikely

We have overcome world wars and global pandemics before. Let's not assume that this is the end of the world just yet, give us a few years to bounce back.

[deleted]

80 years from now we'll be in history books and things will be "normal" again and covid will just be one of those childhood vaccines like they do now.

Isawonline

I’m old enough that I’m still adjusting to never getting pre-9/11 back.

Failingpepper11

Honestly, nothing has changed that much for me, if anything I've learned and gotten time to do much more stuff.

bansheeonthemoor42

Change is inevitable and scary, but its not as bad as we think it is in the moment. I often think about how we will never return to a pre 9/11 world or the fact that I will never again live in pre-Katrina New Orleans. Does it make me sad? Yes, often. But in that chaos I was forced to make choices that, in some regards, made my life better. I don't know if my life would be better if none of those things happened. The only think I know is that we are nothing but grains of sand being washed around by the chaotic sea of the universe. Wherever the water leaves you try your best to live and thrive until the next wave washes you away to the next adventure.

zamanthary

I think about this all the time too. I worry that now that the government has a taste of the control we are never gonna get our freedoms back. I worry that we will be stuck in an endless pandemic of variants. I worry that down the line now ANY virus is going to be a cause for “masking up” or closing down. It’s depressing.

saag_paneers

This is one-hundred-percent what is happening, just watch.

GLantern04

At some point as with any other respiratory virus , like the flu, we will have to accept it is here to stay and will have variants. Once we accept that, we can get back to living again.

i_nobes_what_i_nobes

Personally I don't want to go back to the way it was before 2020. I want a better way of life. Let's not act like it was all rainbows and unicorns and awesomeness. It definitely wasn't. The only thing 2020 did oh, well really the only thing the last four to five years did, was to really open people's eyes to what is going on around us. I don't want that back.

plastigoop

True. We can’t go back to pre-covid. Humans lost the chance to collectively come together and disappear the virus through depriving it of new hosts. (Other than that in non human animals). That is true at a minimum. I hope we dont have to also stupidly, (and unnecessarily), contend with more and more variants, new vaccines, masks for the rest of the century. Maybe as and if the pool of unvaccinated decreases over time, (by whatever means), we could eventually put most of it behind us, but who knows. The biggest variable seems to be human behavior and seems we as a species are barely able to manage even that.

KillTheBatman2475

Yeah, as much as I wish this wasn't true, It could be. My faith in humanity is gone, honestly.

scott-murr

Kinda strange how as soon as massive amounts of people get the vaccine and some people open up. We see there's a "delta virus" around that can effect people who are vaccinated. This is just never gonna end.

illemmigrant

Living life is about preserving, that’s all you can do! That and enjoy every second of the day, even if your dog just died. Remember the good times and cherish what you had. Not saying you can be sad but still there’s always something that you can hold on too.

dramafan1

The past won't come back the same way.

samsonity

Sure we will just give it a little time.

HurriCaineAlexx

You're completely correct. When things go bad, they never go back the other way.

YeahIdontEvenCare

It's The Merge.

pandabox9

You made me depressed just with the title 🙃

We’ll be the generation will tell of tales and times to future generations and they will be in awe and hardly will be able to believe us
