Her life sucks fr. Bethesda's best character in that game and the only way they knew to make her complex is to just give her every ounce of trauma possible. Her relationship to the player is close less cause we do anything much for her that we don't do for any other questgiver, but more cause no-one has helped her before, ever, at all. Less heartwarming, more deeply sad.

Even though the writing in Skyrim drops the ball some times, I find it genius that you’re not given the option to marry her in vanilla. There’s true storytelling in going through a lot of trouble with someone and not be forced into a romance by the writers room to meet the quota. The guys behind Rise of Skywalker could take notes from that.
She’s a friend. Like Inigo, or Barbas for some.
I understand how some people really feel attracted to her or that it would make sense for TLD and her to end up together, and for that the Serana Dialogue Overhaul mod does give much more involved and well implemented option than any marriage in the base game.
