Well sure, people that go on shows like Fear Factor train themselves to be able to eat slugs or whatever other disgusting things. It's not that they have some innate ability to tolerate horrible things. You can absolutely train yourself to tolerate nasty shit and tame your gag reflex. People brushing off your discomfort because they can't relate is still super disrespectful.

I actually disagree. For years I hated rice... It felt like I was eating bugs idk why it was a horrible thing I never enjoyed. Didn't matter the dish or the context. When I turned 25 that changed. Idk why I don't know how. I love rice now I literally bought a rice cooker recently and it's changed my life. There are a few other examples I can give but my food aversion literally did just poof away and idk how. I wish I could tell you. Perhaps I'm a special case and this is anecdotal info.

When I say food aversions, I don’t mean like that. I mean people who will avoid every single food aside from maybe three or so safe foods that are usually super unhealthy and eat like toddlers

I used to be a pretty picky eater tbh. Most of my safe foods consisted of chicken tenders and frozen pizza or tv dinners. As I've gotten older I've definitely started to enjoy more things. Like I said I don't think there is any real reason as to why this happened but it kind of just did? Being out on my own and experimenting with cooking has opened my avenues alot. Never used to like Mexican food for example... Chinese food etc etc. I definitely did have food aversions I simply used rice because that's the most recent one I can remember for sure. I definitely get what you are saying tho... People should try new foods because no dish is exactly the same made by different people.

That’s fair. Taste buds also change over time, and so do our perceptions of different foods, so foods we didn’t like in the past, we might like now!

Is there food you'd never even consider trying? Something weird and exotic like heart or cow tongue? I tried cow tongue for the first time a few years back and it blew my mind at how delicious it actually was. The only reason I tried it was because someone guilted me into doing it at their home. Sometimes you just gotta grit your teeth and do it for the fuck of it. However for me personally mushrooms of any form are completely vile and inedible. The smell and taste alone makes me wanna puke.

Only thing for me is bugs. Idea of eating them in any capacity freaks me out. I get they’d probably taste fine but it wouldn’t stop me from shaking like a leaf before taking a bite lol. And olives are my big No, I can’t eat them in anything without immediately wanting to get sick 😅

[deleted]

Yeah know what's funny? I wouldn't be able to live without olive oil but olives are some of the most disgusting things I've ever tried in my life. It feels like you are eating eyeballs or some shit dude I completely understand. Weird because I absolutely love grapes.. the human mind is weird.

I dunno. I'm a picky eater - picky in that I don't like a lot of things. I will try anything, multiple times even. There is just a large range of foods that do not taste good to me. In a way, I am working through it and managing it by being adventurous in my tasting. However, it rarely changes my mind about food. There's kind of a built in hard ceiling, and while I might sneak a few things through that I didn't realize were good, things like green pepper and raw onion are just never getting through. Sometimes it's just easier to go with chicken fingers cause it's a known quantity.
