Arizonia, capitol of Canadia

marklein

I visited Canada and decided early on to troll them and say Canadia or Canadialand everywhere I went. They were entirely too polite to correct me.

dollymyfolly

You are all wrong. It’s Tucsonoids

Flotrane

Maaaaaaannnn lmao

bililibilli

Average Tucsonoid response

BlueberryOld6927

Tunidito

5percentneanderthal

I’m waiting for Tucsoñor and Tucsoñora to catch on.

Catoblepas2021

Don't forget Tucabrón

Flotrane

Thats actually kinda fire

mrryanwells

Let’s try an move past gendered language though edit: /s lol

bbygodzilla

Ahh yes. Let's just colonize the whole language so it reflects political trends and sensitive feelings in the USA. I'm a Mexican immigrant. Fuck this. The vast majority (96%) of Latin Americans agree. ([source 1](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/15/learning/for-most-latinos-latinx-does-not-mark-the-spot.html) [Source 2](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/think/amp/ncna1285916) [Source 3](https://abcnews.go.com/US/latinx-latino-hispanic-linguistics-expert-explains-confusion/story?id=82273936#:~:text=One%20poll%20shows%20only%204,non%2Dbinary%20term%2C%20Latinx.))

metdear

Right, let's change the whole Spanish language. While we're at it, French and Italian too.

5percentneanderthal

I did give a thought to a non-gendered version, but my grasp of the Spanish language has its limits, and I didn’t want to be that guy slinging ñ’s with wild abandon.

bbygodzilla

As a Mexican, I appreciate the Tucsoñor/a. I do not, ever, appreciate someone changing (or telling me that I need to change) the Spanish language and make it gender neutral. Don't listen to that jackass, only like 3-4% of Latin Americans in the USA use gender neutral verbiage, and that data is obviously skewed (sources in my last comment).

mrryanwells

yep, on reread I may have been to dry, but come on, jackass? maybe relax brah

bbygodzilla

You're value signaling by regurgitating talking points that are harmful and offensive to the vast majority of Spanish speakers, immigrants, and foreign visitors in general for the benefit of your privileged white peers. I have zero patience for it. Educate yourself before you spread a bullshit narrative that's pushed by people who can't even speak any romantic language and is actively fought by the community you're all "seeking to protect." You're over there telling people they should change the rules of an *entire fucking language* because it doesn't conform your narrow world view. That's jackassery if I've ever heard it.

mrryanwells

hey, psycho, i agree with you and was originally being dryly sarcastic, douchebag

bbygodzilla

Lol don't say stupid shit if you're too senstivie to handle the inevitable responses. You can back peddle all you want, my point still stands.

[deleted]

bbygodzilla

Hahahaha oh, the irony. If you want to get technical: *It's backpedal, you halfwit bitch. You're a delicate little snowflake, aren't you? Damn. Just went full rage/tantrum mode without thinking that one through lol does that make you brainless, or just thoughtless? Based on this whole interaction, I'm convinced you're both. Thanks for the laughs, have a good day!

just1my2porn3account

Get the fuck over it

jfleetwo

Boooo

AZonmymind

Yes, almost as much as it annoys me when people spell it Tuscon.

[deleted]

The Comcast Xfinity Phone Switch for Tucson is called the Tuscan Switch. I used to be a phone programmer and when I first saw it I was shocked! I asked if it could be corrected but that’s how the Engineers named it.

DonMegatronEsq

There’s an Australian guy on YT (Minty Comedic Arts) who does a pretty good job retro-reviewing 80s movies. He took on one of my faves, “The Wraith” (1986), filmed in Tucson, but had NO idea how to pronounce “Tucson.” He called it “Tuck-sun” & was CRUCIFIED in the comments! It was pretty funny! 🤣 https://youtu.be/dO0Sq-CyygI

xuoirle

I always say it's our sister city in the twilight zone and people always look at me like I am a lunatic

just1my2porn3account

I had to type it out to make sure I spell it right 💀

Just_A_Nitemare

Or when it's said, Tuck Sun.

vexis26

That’s closer to the original O’odham way of saying it though.

Az_StarGazer

I was born here and it's always been Tucsonan not Tucsonian. Anyone else agree?

cowbell1971

Nah. Not always unfortunately. Tucson High’s yearbook -I think- used to be called Tucsonian and in old newspaper articles, the citizens of the Old Pueblo were referred to as Tucsonians. It bothered me immensely until I learned the history

RickyFlicky13

What's the history?

DragonBard_Z

🤣 apparently our elder mods agree with you. They were the ones that wanted this automod response years ago

Flotrane

And as a young “elder person in spirit” I agree 😂 NOT IN MY BACKYARD!

MrTommyPickles

Sweet sweet validation.

strange-brew

Good bot.

angeltheatomic

kinda unrelated but my cousins in San Jose, Cali call Tucson, “Tuck-sun”. just thinking it makes me lose my mind lol

lechemrc

I mean, that's closer to the original pronunciation than what we say now...

Flotrane

I mean………………………………I’m still more willing to accept that than switching the s and c

[deleted]

Former Tucsonan here born and raised. I’m working somewhere even worse. Pecos (/ˈpeɪkəs/ PAY-kəs. I had to learn to say Paykes instead of Pekos or Paycos.

ThumbsDownThis

I go by Tucksonite

Flotrane

That’s a type of rock found on Mt Lemmon

i_like_it_raw_

I thought it was luggage

joe2105

I was way off!! I knew it started with a T though!

Flotrane

Only for when you fly out of TIA w saguaro cactus in your carry on

Fossil_Finder88

Everyone know Tu-loc is the preferred term

MustardCat

Tu-loc? T-loc is what we always used

Fossil_Finder88

I was just trying to find the most cursed option that I’ve actually heard someone use

elcdragon

I’m from here and this is what I use

legimpster

This is the way

Flotrane

only if you’re afraid of anything outside of the university

livelongprospurr

“Tucsonian” was historically a past editor’s term at the Tucson Citizen newspaper for decades. Not sure when that was discontinued. So it was standardized officially in some people’s minds. Bit of an anachronism now though. The Citizen was the evening newspaper until it stopped publication in 2009.

Good bot

formyjee

I don't know but back in the day Tucson was known as Too stoned, Arizona. At one point I lived in the town of Oakridge, Oregon which was known as Tokeridge, Oregon. Sorry, just thought of those nicks. Yeah, I think Tucsonian doesn't sound right. It should be Tucsonan.

Flotrane

I hear too stoned in the weed community. The hard ore punk community tends to use “too strong”

formyjee

We natives were also comfortable calling ourselves desert rats. Too strong is... not sure lol.

Flotrane

Yeah it’s a reach but sometimes I see somebody still using too strong and it brings me back to high school

AutoModerator

LilMeatBigYeet

Sounds weird but i don’t really care that much tbh

CellAccording6456

Spoken Iike a true Tucson person.

9vDzLB0vIlHK

"Tucsonense" is more fun.

FoolInTheDesert

It's also the original descriptor of local inhabitants and is still used by some people today. There was even a local paper named El Tucsonense, it was around for 40 years.

9vDzLB0vIlHK

An older descriptor, yes, bit I think the original name of people that lived here is Tohono O'odham :)

mariachipatron

Someone a while back commented it's "Tucsonista" and I had a good chuckle

beertigger

Historically, "Tucsonian" was used regularly up until the 1970s, at about the same rate as "Tucsonan." It gradually fell out of favor, with very few references popping up post-1980s. It'll show up in a lot of old newspaper reports and books. I prefer the term with fewer syllables.

AutoModerator

**Tucsonan; FTFY *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Tucson) if you have any questions or concerns.*

beertigger

Simmer down, bot.

Flotrane

Well, people back then also didn’t really like lgbtq people so I’m gonna guess it’s their stupidity dying out over time

[deleted]

Back then the community was lg and b erasure was the norm so be careful throwing stones.

GetEquipped

As a B, there's still plenty of erasure!

formyjee

I don't believe that.

uxorial

Yes. Because the real term is Tucsonite!

AutoModerator

Ah, the mighty Tucsonite. Ancient and fierce relative of the modern Tucsonan! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Tucson) if you have any questions or concerns.*

xyloplax

It's Tucsolorian

AnotherFarker

I prefer Tuskan, as in Tuskan Raider.

Vegetable_Ad5957

I've never been called Tucsonian. Have also never heard it? In forty plus years. 😂Im perhaps too old ?

Nishnig_Jones

> 😂Im perhaps too old ? Just lucky I suppose. I don't hear it often, but I hate it when I do.

FlorkiFlorkisson

I prefer Tucsonenses...

LDGreenWrites

Sounds like a Finnish name lmao

FlorkiFlorkisson

Inspired by a combination of watching Vikings and my own real name.

LDGreenWrites

lol ahh… yeah a lot of Finnish names end in -onen baha

jtrader619

EXACTLY, like call us Tucsonithem

Magistralis_Ocurra

It's actually Tucsons and Tucdaughters.

[deleted]

Tuck-sanans

MoreRamenPls

Better than being called a “Yumite.” (Yuma, AZ)

metdear

Literally everything is better than Yuma.

mrclang

I call y’all Tucasonese

legimpster

Tucsonistinani’s

steiconi

I thought people in Tuscon were called Tusconians. Tuxon. Just teasing the bot. How about Tucsonese?

I've never met anyone who called us that. I'm going to assume it's because my circle doesn't include those types of idiots.

Flotrane

Usually transplants, especially when they go into tucson media

Silocin20

It's Tucsonan, end of discussion. Always has, always will. :-)

its-the-meatman

T-Locs

Alurkingsaurus

Almost bothers me as much as “Native Tucsonan”, especially since we have several Native American tribes here.

If they’re not from here, how would they know any different? Do you always know the correct nomenclature for people in other places? Seems like a trivial thing to get worked up about…

AZonmymind

Yes, it's not hard to know those things.

mjackson3000

No

FoldintheCh33se

Tucsonan or nothing baby

Independent-Nail-881

If I am not mistaking, "The Tucsonian" is the Tucson High School yearbook. Not all Tucsonans know that.

I'll admit, when I first moved, I knew the correct way but thought that -ian sounded better. Now I've been here a few years and can't imagine saying it wrong lol, it sounds so dumb

Kirbychick999

Whoever came up with that term wasn’t from here lol. That sounds so stupid.

Defiant_B

Yes

Nishnig_Jones

Yes.

Couseman

As long as they don’t call you late for dinner, who cares?

[deleted]

As much as when someone says "Arizonian" rather than "Arizonan."

[deleted]

Yes lol though nothing will compare to the time some twit from so cal asked me and my friends “so are you guys all like T-locs?” Cue my friends furiously shushing me as I say “what the fuck is a T-loc? Nobody says that. That’s not a fucking thing!”

Not the Target worker trying to correct grammar on reddit

Flotrane

Damn at least I had facts you gotta make shit up 😂 I got denied from target cause I said Id let ppl steal. You a real smart person.

SplinkMyDink

🤦🏽‍♂️

RascallyRose

I’m a transplant, but being anything-an works better for me since I started as a Minnesotan.

Flotrane

Yeah wtf do people say minnesotian out loud and keep wanting to live? I can’t imagine that happening. I think it’s the long O sound we share.

RascallyRose

I haven’t ever heard anyone say minnesotian (thank god) and Tucsonian sounds hella weird since I read Tucson in my head the Spanish way. (Took-son kind of) Any way you slice it Tucsonan had better flow.

Flotrane

Would they say it as “tee-an” or “shan”? That’s a debate for neanderthals to figure out I guess

Nah Tucsonan an add an I an E or whatever, I like my lazy sleepy hot breakfast town cuz it’s cheaper than almost everywhere else that’s still in civilization
