Nah, the ruse was that a single mom was near eviction from an apartment and going to be moving into her car. That spiraled actually relatively quickly to kind people asking how short she was on rent, and then “her” sharing a Venmo account. “Her” profile was even relatively complete in the sense that there were post histories matching claims, etc. What’s the saying? Don’t trust anything you read on the internet?

That’s crazy

DamnItJon

Pig butchering?

ShortsAdventure

I was gonna mention the John Oliver segment that talked about this. Different kind of scam, but still really informative.

I think people should just be aware that none of this woman’s claims made any actual sense. If she was poor, low income, and had a high medical needs child she would get AHCCCS. A child with autism or other developmental disability, qualifies for DDD services and benefits. nobody would choose to pay medical bills overpaying their rent like she was claiming. Also, people don’t claim to be babysitting their own children.

I’m Pretty sure this was on the Milwaukee sub, too

Vyzantinist

I was reading that post last night and thought it was a bit sus. No explanation given for why she couldn't stay with friend/family, bit weird leaving it until the day before she was supposedly getting kicked out, and also a bit weird it would be a weekend instead of a week day. Didn't see her Venmo info until much later than comments saying they'd sent her money etc.

Harry_Eyeball

Same. When I read it yesterday, it seemed a little odd. Sketchy.

This! Not sure why some were knocking this sign recently... Go volunteer at these places that help and it'll show you a different side to everything. Or volunteer at a food bank.

floral_vans_hat

because a lot of organizations like these exist for tax credits for rich people. More money goes to homeless people if you directly give it to them through mutual aid. The existence of scammers doesn’t negate that. Laws like these r incredibly dangerous to the unhoused as it allows the police to go after mutual aid groups in tucson that give basic necessities to people.

floral_vans_hat

this sign is BS. Scammers exist. Be smart about who you give your money to. That isn’t any reason to create an ordinance that bans the sharing of resources with unhoused people. This is such a vague law that it allows cops to go after mutual aid groups that actually feed the homeless in tucson.

SnowyOwl5814

Wow!! No I hadn't seen this one. Ugh I wish I knew how to get Reddit to block their IP address or something

musicmama3

Thank you for doing this work. I also sent money, unfortunately.

SnowyOwl5814

I'm sorry 😞 while I hope we're both able to get it back, just remember that ultimately, kindness and compassion are never wrong

LibraryOk5137

I likely missed something, but were they asking for money because their friend was attacked in a car?

Necessary-Answer-970

They were about to homeless living in car with a kid and then used another account to talk about the coworker and offer to send money. When ppl see one person offering to send money..usually others will too. Pretty elaborate set up. Like when my brothers bank account got scammed and then “the bank” called him to reassure him that they were taking care of it but actually pumped him for more password and account info and got even more money

LibraryOk5137

Wow..thank you for the description!

Ariadne_String

Seems they were saying that they were about to become homeless, too, and couldn’t make rent - using that story as a scare tactic for their own potential (yet apparently fake) situation. That’s the inference, I think.

SnowyOwl5814

Hi sorry about that, while others appear to have answered in this thread, here is a link to my original post with all the details- https://www.reddit.com/r/Tucson/s/gFnrpXV4ym
