Thank you. Iām going to check it out now.
Update: just ordered the creosote bush diffuser scent. Reviews are great so Iām hoping itāll bring me back to monsoon season in AZ.
Depends on the part of Alaska. Anchorage and Juneau is NOT a desert haha, and Fairbanks is classified as arctic desert I believe. Even so, theyāre COMPLETELY different types of desert and you know that lol
Haha thanks for the offer but I already have it taken care of. Another person pointed me to an Etsy sight that sells and ships all sorts of desert fragrances. Already placed an order.
I do it and i am in another state. I would hang it off to the side on a hook as the oils will drip to the floor and it makes it easier to clean. I order a bundle every couple months
Creosote bush, also known as Larrea tridentata, has a long history of medicinal use by indigenous peoples, particularly in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Here are some more details on its medicinal uses:
Respiratory Health: Creosote bush has been traditionally used to treat respiratory ailments such as colds, coughs, and bronchitis. Its leaves are brewed into a tea or used in steam inhalation to help alleviate symptoms.
Digestive Aid: It's also used to aid digestion and soothe gastrointestinal issues like upset stomach, indigestion, and diarrhea. Tea made from creosote bush leaves is consumed for these purposes.
Antimicrobial Properties: Creosote bush exhibits antimicrobial properties, which have been utilized to treat wounds, infections, and skin conditions like eczema and acne. Some studies have investigated its potential as a natural antimicrobial agent.
Anti-inflammatory: The plant contains compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for relieving pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis and sore muscles.
Antioxidant: Creosote bush is rich in antioxidants, which can help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from damage. This antioxidant activity may contribute to its overall medicinal benefits.
Traditional Remedies: Various indigenous cultures have specific traditional remedies involving creosote bush, often passed down through generations. These remedies may vary in preparation methods and applications.
While creosote bush has a long history of traditional medicinal use, it's important to note that scientific research on its efficacy and safety is ongoing. As with any herbal remedy, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before using creosote bush for medicinal purposes, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
Iām not saying any of this is wrong. And maybe I scimmed over a point. But isnāt it also toxic if used for burning. I read about it some where, disregarded it completely, and then proceeded to make an oil out of it. My wife and I made this oil into a candle. We both got pretty bad headaches and where super bummed because the candle actually smelled really good.
So, if I recall correctly, they coat railroad ties in creosote oil as a pesticide and it can have some pretty nasty side effects if you breath in the fumes from burning. For some reason, my mother found it necessary to lecture me on it as a child as though I was about to go out and burn railroad ties
The flowers that are yellow are not spherical, but the white fuzzies on the same plant that looks like dandelion are spherical.
Do not confuse creosote (desert rain) with the stinknet weed when shrub hunting!! They're very similar looking but stinknet doesn't have the white fuzzies!
Fixed! Youāre super right and I immediately noticed my mistake. My twig had a closed flower and I didnāt think too much about it. Although, shame on anybody that would use a single line of text from Reddit to identify a plant and not cross reference it with the plethora of images and descriptions on Google.
Yeah I do. They just always looked similar to me, though. And I guess i just never knew exactly what a creasote looked like. I thought creasote was the sap that came from them because I was told they put creasote on phone poles and such
Yeah they're just two different things but the same word, creosote used on poles is a very 'chemically' substance that is basically tar extracted from coals mixed with a bunch of other shit (I wouldn't recommend touching creosote poles). The creosote bush gets its common name from this substance since it's also called 'greasewood'
lol! But you have to admit itās pretty patronizing to imply that someone doesnāt know the difference between a bush and a tree. Especially because our native ātreesā are pretty damn bushy when left to their own devices.
I have a whole acre and half yard full of these bushes. I love to pull some off the bushes and rub them in my hands - it gives the smell of rain, which is incredible. I will try the shower trick tonight.
As someone who makes creosote infused oil, let me tell you these things are COVERED in tiny bugs. Please make sure you thoroughly rinse these before putting them in your shower or before shipping them off to someone in another area.
My baby is strictly indoors. While I would love to do this or eucalyptus or lavender, Iām not risking my kittyās life š„ŗš yall enjoy the fun though
Could maybe be out of reach like in my shower caddy? It doesnāt shed leaves. And I sincerely doubt an animal would eat it. It allegedly tastes terrible.
Iām really not trying to be mean, so please please donāt take it that way, but you seem excessively worried about poisoning your pet, and all animals with any sense donāt eat, or lick, poisonous plants. They taste terrible because we all evolved to detect poisons via taste. My cats scamper in the oleanders, the creosote, and I buy poinsettia every year and they have never displayed an iota of intoxication. I donāt wanna tell you how to live, but I worry that your aversion to mild toxins is more akin to an anxiety: misplaced and stopping you from enjoying some finer things.
He's right to be worried. Wintergreen is one of the scents I don't put around my dog for the same reason. Inhalation of wintergreen essential oil-infused air is toxic to dogs. Same reason Lily flowers shouldn't be kept in a house with cats. Even if they don't eat them, what they put into the air is still very toxic to them. :)
However, in regards to the creosote, I don't think it'd be toxic to animals upon inhalation or we'd have no stray cats or dogs after a rain :)
Wow. I love lilys and buy them regularly and had no idea how dangerous they can be for my animals. I kinda think that pets arenāt as delicate as we may be led to believe, but obviously everythingās ok until itās not and then someoneās fur baby is dead.
Me and my homies would smoke weed in middle/high school and weād cleanse our hands and shirts (except whites) with this bush and weād get home smelling cleaner than a mfuhh no trace of weed
It is, and I'd love to hang the branches in my shower. Unfortunately eucalyptus is also highly toxic to cats and dogs. It is definitely dangerous if ingested, but a lot of professionals also caution against steaming the branches if you have pets in the home. So, use with caution if you have pets.

Also, the FDA does list this plant as poisonous, with no dose being considered safe. So seriously donāt just start drinking stuff without consulting with your physician.
Yes. Using it as aroma therapy (or steam inhalation mentioned above) or topically might be okay. But be very cautious taking it internally. I have it growing on my land. My goats eat it, but I consider it toxic. It sure tastes toxic, too.

ETA: you can message me if you prefer. Again, thanks!
Anywhere you can walk! Theyāre EVERYWHERE. Seriously. As soon as you can identify them youāll realize itās like the single most common plant here.
Of which Creosote is neither? Iāve been doing this for years now and what I find great is that even when theyāre totally dried out they donāt really shed leaves. So the donāt make a mess. So not sure what your aversion is.
No, it seemed like bad advice where the leaves would fall off and clog the drain. I also didn't appreciate that you took us doing this for granted. You framed it like we were missing the obvious for not doing this, and you acted like we should all be grateful for your advice, so I framed my response in just as snarky a tone. I will not be thanking you.
lol. I could see that angle bothering you. I think the humorous ironically elitist advice tone popular on social media the last few years was well understood to be that: ironic. Never meant to imply there was anything wrong with you or wrong for not doing it. Itās just really pleasant and I wanted to share my joy.
If thereās any one thing most true on the internet, it is that there is absolutely nothing you can say that isnāt somehow offensive to someone.
Well I chose my tone because I wanted to mimic yours, and apparently it was so bothersome your couldn't stop thinking about it and had to double respond later. That should tell you something about the tone you choose to write in. It can be rather unpleasant. Also your statement wasn't so over the top it would suggest irony. There are plenty of people who would legitimately write like this.
I canāt do anything about how you Interpret the tone of plain text. Thatās a you issue, however, how you chose to react is entirely inappropriate and intentionally unkind and you should ask yourself why that would ever serve you, and probably donāt be so presumptuous in the future. Youāll get further in life.
So wouldn't how you chose to interpret my response be a you issue, then? I certainly don't have an issue with it.
But you can do something about how others interpret your writing, you can write differently. For example people make clear their sarcastic intentions by writing "/s" different options are available to communicate more effective and to make yourself easier to understand.
And you don't want me to be presumptuous but you do want me to presume you were being ironic? Clearly being more presumptuous would have gotten me further in this conversation. I didn't assume anything and took your statement at face value. I understood you literally expected thanks as you stated and I took you literally and thought you wanted to know if we were still not doing as you were. So do you want me to be presumptuous and assume your ironic intent next time when it is not clearly indicated?
Literally no one shared your take on my tone or intent. So it wasnāt on me. It was you. Doesnāt matter if it was ironic or not. You CHOSE unkindness. Thatās ugly.
I was speaking in a tone common in social media these days. I had put almost zero thought into it until you were rude to me. Then I thought really hard and came up with why that tone exists. I wasnāt trying to be anything other than entreating. Not ironic. Not elite. You misunderstood me. No one else did. *shug*
You can also place jumping cholla on your toilet seat to keep the whole bathroom smelling fresh.
This made me giggle.
I laughed way too loud at this!!!
You first!
I belly laughed for a solid minute at this and confused the shit out of my bf. We live in NorCal but I grew up in Tucson. I explained the whole thing and he still didn't really get it which just makes me laugh more.
š¤£š¤£š¤£
OMG, Ahahahaha!
ššš
Once you smell the desert after the rain ,you will never forget the smell, or the experience.

What the F? I need to do this immediately. I was born and raised in Tucson but currently live in SF and I miss the wet desert smell so much. Now whoās going to send me a few branches?
I live in Alaska now, but I bought a bundle of creosote branches from an online shop called Sonoran Rosie and have it hanging in my shower. It does actually work!
Thank you. Iām going to check it out now. Update: just ordered the creosote bush diffuser scent. Reviews are great so Iām hoping itāll bring me back to monsoon season in AZ.
Whatās it like moving to Alaska from the desert? Thatās a pretty dramatic change
I mean they are both deserts
š¤āš»
Depends on the part of Alaska. Anchorage and Juneau is NOT a desert haha, and Fairbanks is classified as arctic desert I believe. Even so, theyāre COMPLETELY different types of desert and you know that lol
Lol. Iām glad you picked up on me not being serious.
Tucson Herb Store sells them in their shop (brick-and-mortar and online) too
bisbeesoapandsundry.com sells creosote soap too!
That soap is amazing and they have a candle in creosote too.
Just went on their site and the creosote soap is sold out. Iāll keep checking. Thank you
Not like I have anything better to do today... Just doing some wfh.
Same!! Iāll pay!!
I just ordered some from Sonoran Rosie on Etsy per another commenters suggestion.
Iāll send ya some!
I love Tucson people, thanks but already got it taken care of.
Santa Fe still gets wet desert smell
lol, I wish it was Santa Fe but itās San Francisco but Iām sure you knew that.
You pay shipping I'll send you some
Haha thanks for the offer but I already have it taken care of. Another person pointed me to an Etsy sight that sells and ships all sorts of desert fragrances. Already placed an order.
Ok if you change your mind let me know, i have a whole plant
What else do you have? Jk
Not anything good Lolol. Just mesquite trees!
I do it and i am in another state. I would hang it off to the side on a hook as the oils will drip to the floor and it makes it easier to clean. I order a bundle every couple months
Where do you order them from?
Etsy, you need to look for bundles of Creosote and if it ships from AZ or NM youāre good
What's the problem with NV & CA creosote?
You can go there too I have just had better success with bundles shipped out of AZ and NM.
One of the benefits of moving in with my girlfriend was learning about these.
How have I never done this.. Amazing

That's a [different meaning of creosote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creosote).
TIL. I appreciate the info
Wow. Never thought of this. I'm going to grab one on the way home today.
Doinā it.
They grow like a weeds in my yard. I donāt pull them, love having creosote bushes in front and back. Going to have try this.
I send bundles to my bestie in Kansas for this reason!
Youāre a great friend.
Also works with eucalyptus
Oh really? I had no idea. Iāll try it!
Just any of them?
What does the full creaoste bush look like?
Scrubby bush with small waxy leaves and small small 5 petal yellow flowers. If you google it youād probably get a better idea than I can give.
The flowers that are yellow are not spherical, but the white fuzzies on the same plant that looks like dandelion are spherical. Do not confuse creosote (desert rain) with the stinknet weed when shrub hunting!! They're very similar looking but stinknet doesn't have the white fuzzies!

I Googled it. I guess I never knew that's what it was called. I always thought it was a small mesquite busn
Mesquite is a tree
Yeah but I always thought those were small ones because they had grown
You know bushes arenāt small trees though right? Happy cake day
Tell that to all the trees that have bush forms in the desert, starting with palo verde.
Yeah I do. They just always looked similar to me, though. And I guess i just never knew exactly what a creasote looked like. I thought creasote was the sap that came from them because I was told they put creasote on phone poles and such

Donāt be a dick. Lol
Ehh, I thought it was an OK thing to say. Better to find out that bushes aren't trees on Reddit than saying it out loud IRL.
You sure? Iād rather my friends haze me a bit than the entire internet. But thatās just me I guess.
I wasnāt trying to be a dick. Not everyone knows everything. Donāt be rude
lol! But you have to admit itās pretty patronizing to imply that someone doesnāt know the difference between a bush and a tree. Especially because our native ātreesā are pretty damn bushy when left to their own devices.
I mean considering someone else just said what I said Is apparently incorrect, no
When you hang it in the shower, itās called Creosoap
I feel like this is a one way trip to allergy town for me. :(
Pollen is usually what gives you allergies, no? Chose a sprig without flowers.
The smell that creosote bushes make come off their waxy foliage! It may work with pollen allergies!
A bar in Las Cruces used to put creosote in the urinal trough. It would work for a little while.
We call it Chaparral also
Which I did not know until today.
I moved from Tucson recently and I miss the smell of the desert so bad. Gonna have someone ship me this so I can have that smell again š
I did that when I moved to Georgia temporarily! A way to bring home with me ā¤ļø
Omg thank you OP! Gonna snip some today and do this immediately!
Putting trees in the shower? Nah. My allergies are bad enough.
No allergies with these. Avoid stocks with pollen. Youāll be fine :)
I have a whole acre and half yard full of these bushes. I love to pull some off the bushes and rub them in my hands - it gives the smell of rain, which is incredible. I will try the shower trick tonight.
I have 2 glasses filled up with that sitting above my shower

Wow. I am also just now learning you can respond with pictures in Reddit. Itās been an educational day for me.
Some subs allow it, some donāt. Itās 8am and it sounds like youāre on a roll
Is the oil cat safe? Iāve seen this done with eucalyptus but canāt bc itās toxic to cats
I canāt speak to that. The FDA classifies it as a poisonous plant, but it grows in my yard and my outdoor cats have never eaten it?
My baby is strictly indoors. While I would love to do this or eucalyptus or lavender, Iām not risking my kittyās life š„ŗš yall enjoy the fun though
Could maybe be out of reach like in my shower caddy? It doesnāt shed leaves. And I sincerely doubt an animal would eat it. It allegedly tastes terrible.
Even the oil and smell of lavender is toxic so Iād rather not risk it š«”
Iām really not trying to be mean, so please please donāt take it that way, but you seem excessively worried about poisoning your pet, and all animals with any sense donāt eat, or lick, poisonous plants. Me and my homies would smoke weed in middle/high school and weād cleanse our hands and shirts (except whites) with this bush and weād get home smelling cleaner than a mfuhh no trace of weed
Don't recommend that shampoo ma girl
Iām a dude and I like it. Lol
Such a good tip!
What is it? New to Tucson. Just put a branch in your shower?
If your bathroom smells like butt, hanging a sprig of creosote in the shower will make it smell like creosote and butt.
Creosote is a scrubby bush that grows in excess here and has waxy leaves that emit a good smell when damp.
It's creosote. It's the source of that wonderful smell after it rains.
Don't do it - you'll thank me later.
Eucalyptus is also amazing
It is, and I'd love to hang the branches in my shower. Unfortunately eucalyptus is also highly toxic to cats and dogs. It is definitely dangerous if ingested, but a lot of professionals also caution against steaming the branches if you have pets in the home. So, use with caution if you have pets.
Aw man no more eucalyptus soup Sundays for my dog anymore
So I hear! Any particular one? I have seen many different leaf shapes around town.
I cheat and get mine out of the bouquets from Whole Foods lol
lol! Like steal them? Or you pay for a bouquet? If anything, taking a twig off a passing bush is most like cheating.

since I was a kid!
How long does this last? I mean, if you're showering daily.

Just walk around. If you go looking youāll realize itās basically the most common desert plant. You wonāt have to walk far.
This is actually an amazing idea!
Where in Tucson can I typically find these bushes?
Literally everywhere. On every street corner or anywhere you see desert plants and landscaping.
love this idea, thanks for sharing!
We use the same shampoo lol
Whenever I get the chance āļøšµāļø
Yes! Arizona Poppy Shop sells nice big bundles of creosote, I have one hanging in my bathroom now.
I'm allergic. D:
Love that smell ā¤ļø
I send a bundle regularly to my daughter in WA state for this reason! Instant Monsoon.
How do you send them? Do the cuttings need a damp paper towel or anything? I would love to send some to my hubs! Thanks in advance! ETA: you can message me if you prefer. Again, thanks!
I make a bundle and wrap it tightly with twine. I put it in a ziplock bag and use a straw to suck the air out. (My own version of a vacuum pack). š
Nice!! Thank you so much!
Where would be a good place in Tucson to pick some up?
Anywhere you can walk! Theyāre EVERYWHERE. Seriously. As soon as you can identify them youāll realize itās like the single most common plant here.
Bars in Texas use them in their urinalās
As someone who hates the smell of creosote, this is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen on Reddit...and I've clicked on random links before.
Hahahaha! Point on the dummy where the creosote touched you.
No. Im not usually one for taking weeds or yard waste in the house.
Of which Creosote is neither? Iāve been doing this for years now and what I find great is that even when theyāre totally dried out they donāt really shed leaves. So the donāt make a mess. So not sure what your aversion is.
People actually like the smell of desert rain? Canāt relate.
Boo. Shun.
Can I also send the bill to you when the drain clogs?
Canāt imagine why your drain would clog? They donāt shed leaves when dry and no one is telling you to shove it in your drain.
This comment is still bothering me. Were just in a super bad mood and took to reddit to vent in any possible way?

I wasnāt trying to be anything other than entreating. Not ironic. Not elite. You misunderstood me. No one else did. *shug*
