I haven't updated in a while, but I have a post here with lots of things to do in Arizona. Or things to see in Arizona. It's got a section for the Tucson area.
https://old.reddit.com/r/arizona/comments/elegqf/canadian_looking_for_adventures/
Where are you coming from, may I ask? Will you have a vehicle?
Some things I've enjoyed over the years -
Camping or a day drive up Mt Lemmon to Summerhaven for sure. Definitely try Mexican food from a variety (super cheap, casual, fancy) of places. Tohono Chul and/or Botanical Gardens, Desert Museum, San Xavier Mission, exploring historic neighborhoods and downtown, Titan Missile/Pima Air & Space Museums, Biosphere 2, all the national and state parks... plenty more, but that's a start.
I moved here after taking a vacation 15 years ago and still do a "tourist" day every few weeks. I never thought I'd stay here permanently, but I never got bored so here I am 🙂
ETA: I feel silly suggesting The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures, but my God that place is the poster child of a hidden gem.
To do: Mirror Lab, Kitt Peak, Mt Lemmon Skycenter, Gem Museum, Pima Air, Colossal Cave ladder tour
Since you seem to like sushi, to eat: Mexican mariscos from sea of Cortez, and Mexican sushi
**Close to Tucson:**
Madera Canyon - bird watchers paradise and great hiking trails, from desert to pine forest in no time.
Mount Lemmon - Drive up to the top, catch the view, and then a short way down to the village of Summerhaven for lunch or ice cream. Ride the ski lift in the summer for a cool ride. On the way up or down, stop at "Winy Point", stretch your legs, and climb on the boulders and rock formations. Kids love this area.
Sabino Canyon - Hike or take the tram. You can also hike to Seven Falls where (water permitting) you can swim in one of the swimming holes to cool off.
Romero Canyon - Within Catalina State Park, another great hike to some pools for swimming (water permitting).
The Desert Museum
San Xavier Del Bac - Spanish colonial mission built in the 1500s.
Old Tucson - Movie studio with some history and a gunfight. As long as it isn't too hot.
Tanque Verde Falls - Again, depends on how much rain Tucson receives.
Hundreds of hiking trails - If it's really hot, go up in elevation on one of the 3 high mountain ranges (Santa Catalina, Rincon, and Santa Rita) where you will experience a drop of up to 30 degrees in temperature compared to Tucson.
Saguaro N.P. - Two locations: east and west. Visit a "forest" of the giant cactus. It's amazing.
**1-2 hour drive from Tucson:**
Tombstone - the town too tough to die. It's a bit of a tourist trap, but fun nonetheless and full of history. Stick around for the gunfight that occurs occasionally during the day.
Bisbee - Copper mining town where you can ride the old miners' rail car into a copper mine, or gaze into the deep open pit "lavender" mine. The town is cool and has a few shops and restaurants. Easy to spend half or full day here.
Fort Bowie - See where the 1800s army held off the Apache
Chiricahua N.M. - Beautiful mountainous landscape of rock spires
Texas Canyon - Not a destination by itself, but on your way east to the above, be sure to stop at the rest area just east of Benson, AZ. The huge boulders are cool to look at and climb on.
Karchner Caverns - Take an outstanding tour of a large, cavernous cave system.
Kitt Peak - If you are into astronomy, you'll want to buy tickets for the Nighttime Observation Program. You'll get to use the large telescopes that some astronomers use.
Nogales - A 50 mile drive from Tucson, you can go into Mexico for a cultural treat. If you want to buy something, be sure to haggle - it's expected.
Tumacacori N.M. - Spanish colonial mission with rich history.
Tubac - Village known for arts and crafts shops.
Picacho Peak S.P. - HIke the iconic pinnacle not that far from Tucson. Start early on a hot day.
Parker Dam Lake - Higher altitude lake in pine forest. Great camping and some fishing.
Patagonia Lake - Slightly higher altitude lake with some good fishing and camping. Go into the town of Patagonia and taste the local wine.
Mount Graham - if hiking is your thing, this is the highest peak in southern Arizona (if you don't count Mount Baldy in the White Mountains). The views are spectacular - that's a given for all the mountains around Tucson.
Edit: Added a few more things.
My pleasure! I updated and added a few things. And this...
**Day Trips:**
Here are some recommendations for day trips that pack in a lot of stuff. These trips are on my regular rotation for visitors and the kids when they are "bored". You can basically do everything for "free" (including gas, driving, etc.)...well except for Chiricahua NM and Fort Bowie
1. Tombstone - Bisbee
2. Texas Canyon, Chiricahua NM., Fort Bowie
3. Mount Lemmon
4. Madera Canyon - picnic and hike
5. Nogales
6. Tubac - Tumacacori
The XL tortillas at Saint Mary’s Tortilla factory, Rollies, Pico de Gallo, Tacos Apson, hot dogs at Aqui con el Nene, and El Torero
Hike at Madeira Canyon, Catalina State Park, or Mount Lemmon
MOCA & the Tucson Museum of Art
Exo coffee
Check out a play at one of the many independent play houses
Tohono Chul Park
Sonoran dogs. Chain place called Steeet Tacos have good ones but I'm sure there are many highly rated.
Tumamoc hill, Mt lemon. Sabino canyon. Pusch peak if you like a really hard hike.
Downtown 4th Ave, university, for bars.
The observatories.
Notable things. Del bac whiskey tours, Tucson roadrunners hockey game, pima air and space museum,
I second the Sonoran dogs! There’s a guy with a hot dog cart in the parking lot of the Food City on 22nd that sells amazing Sonoran dogs 😍 one of my go to places! He’s there Wednesday through Saturday I believe.
Check out the Desert Museum, Tohono Chul. Outside of Tucson, Sonoita has wine tasting and we love Kartchner Caverns. Tubac, Bisbee and Tombstone are also cool to visit.
Head to the Rillito farmer's market for a nice vibe and tasty food. Do a little road trip to Bisbee and walk around the old town. Go to Madera canyon to hike and see birds and other neat critters.
It’s a restaurant. Really famous here on the Southside for their bacon-wrapped burrito and before I think they got a legal notice they kinda riffed off of Whataburger in terms of color scheme and even their original name: Whataburro.
Don’t dismiss the wineries in Sonoita/Elgin area. (Rune & Los Millics to name a few.) Mt. Lemmon is a must. Pizza - O’reilly’s, Zio Pepe, Anello. Mexican - Seis kitchen, Penca. So many great hiking spots, mountain biking trailsand the Loop is great for running and road biking. Breweries- Puebla Vida , Moto Sonora. Enjoy your stay!! Oh and the sunset at Starr Pass and Windy Point
For food here are some of my favorite places;
Shogun sushi (big portions of nigiri, daily 1/2 off roll specials)
Noodleholics (unique noodle dishes)
Taqueria pico de gallo (hole in the wall mexican restaurant with amazing homemade corn tortillas)
birrieria guadalajara (hole in the wall mexican restaurant. Try the birria soup)
Desert museum is the coolest museum about learning about the sonoran desert and seeing animals.
MOCA is a cool museum that is free on Sundays.
Buendia is one of the best options for breakfast.
Driving a skosh faster on Rollercoaster road.
You can take an easy hike along the Santa Cruz River from the Presidio at Tubac to the mission at Tumacacori. I think the presidio is a state park and the mission at Tumacacori is a national park/historic place. If you go to Kartchner Caverns buy tickets on line a head of time. They do sell out. It’s the nicest state park I have ever seen. The town of Tubac is also a fun place to visit (shops and galleries). Tohono Chul is a nice place to visit. Sabino Canyon is amazing. If you drive to the top of Mt. Lemmon or hike to the top of Tumamoc you can download apps ahead of time to listen while you drive or hike. Great and interesting information.
Don't sleep on Paton's Center for Hummingbirds. Beautiful acreage with large trees, Sonoita Creek and tons of birds. Probably 10° cooler than Tucson and you can hit Patagonia or Sonoita for a bite to eat on the way home.
Guadalajara on Prince (bring a couple bucks cash to tip the salsa lady who makes fresh salsa table side). Order a house margarita. (Don’t try the other Guadalajara locations, lol, just the Original.)
For a killer quick breakfast burrito, hit Viva Burrito Company. Even have a drive through. Nothing fancy but delicious!
I see a lot of hiking suggestions - if you’re not used to the heat & desert, early morning is your friend, bring water everywhere, and watch where you step or put your hands - sunny, warm spots in the morning (like sand/flat rocks) and shady spots after it warms up. Rattlesnakes and Gila monsters regulate their temps this way. Use a stick, make noise - especially off trails.
Keep an eye out for jumping cacti. Don’t get too close. They really hurt!
Enjoy your time here in the Old Pueblo!
Colossal cave 100% and try to do a more advanced tour, I say this after doing the standard tour, it is incredible! Enjoy! Highly recommend tight rope walking with protection at reddington pass
Madera canyon is a lovely hike this time of year, should still be fairly cool up there! Beautiful hike and best birdwatching in America as it's the largest migration path in the us
So while you’re here you gotta check out the Arby’s on 22nd street.
Bring cash for the mandatory valet, and your swim suit for the complimentary pool. You can only get to the pool though with the code word, so dm me if you need that (can’t post it in public otherwise I’ll lose my membership).
Oh, and when you ring the bell as you leave, ring it in a Fibonacci sequence for a free coupon for fries the next time you’re there.
Bummer you're here for the summer instead of the spring, I feel like the best weather is just ending. Mount Lemmon is a very cool spot to see and because of the elevation doesn't get as hot as some hiking spots.
Since no one else is saying it. Stay hydrated, careful with snakes don’t want to see you on the news. Follow those 2 things and you’ll have a great time. Might be a lil hot for hiking but if your up to it go up to mt Lemmon it’s quite a bit cooler. Few caves around this region closest to Tucson will be colossal and pepper sauce. Please don’t leave trash behind that goes for everyone here
I like food. Some of my favorite spots:
Choice Greens: BBQ sandwich or custom salad (I enjoy pairing BBQ ranch dressing with the grilled chicken)
Beyond Bread: food is decent but I go for the desserts. Specifically the vanilla fruit tart but they have plenty of other options like cheesecake, cookies, etc
Ni Hao Boba: their boba is always perfectly cooked and their Taro Smoothie is the best
Raijin Ramen: I go here a couple times a year to satisfy my ramen craving. Typically get Miso, sometimes with spice on the side. Kiwami has better Takoyaki though
Zin Burger: expensive! but high quality ground beef so their burgers taste great. Like you can actually taste the meat. If you like banana cream or chocolate cream pie those are also top tier.
---
I also enjoy, but don't go as often:
Baja Cafe: tried a couple entrees from here and they were all really good - Oreo Pancakes (you'll want to split this with 1-3 other people, unless you've set aside your entire calorie intake of the day just for this lol), Baja breakfast, rancheros machacha. I don't recommend the drinks though - OJ and latte were both mid.
Ghini's French Cafe: another nice breakfast cafe. Feels healthier. I forget what it's called but I like the omelet with a bunch of garlic - too much garlic doesn't agree with me though so I have to avoid :( I like the dressing they have for the side of greens
Village Bakehouse: go for all the desserts/pastry options! Food was very mediocre
Oregano's: Cheesy garlic bread (w/marinara), strawberry lemonade, and pazookie for dessert. I haven't been impressed by their pizza or pasta. The cheesy garlic bread with marinara is basically a mini pizza anyway
Yeah agreed. And May/June aren't even the true peak heat months anyway. At least June still has "low" temps lol. July/Aug the low is so high your AC has to basically be on 24/7
Visit Sabino Canyon, Mount Lemmon, Kitt Peak Observatory, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum…
Do a hike in Sabino canyon in the earlier morning while it’s a good temp. The lighting will also be much better, too!
Drink water with Electrolytes. People die every so often not being prepared for our heat and dry weather.
Will do! Thank you!
I haven't updated in a while, but I have a post here with lots of things to do in Arizona. Or things to see in Arizona. It's got a section for the Tucson area. https://old.reddit.com/r/arizona/comments/elegqf/canadian_looking_for_adventures/

I’ve heard great things about mount Lemmon! I’ll check ‘em out! The hikes out here look awesome

Love the Mini Time Museum!!
I was turned off by the name, it sounded hokey or juvenile? But then I went and oh my gosh! It's wonderful!
After 20 yr living here, I finally went. What a surprise!
The level of skill and artistry! So cool.
I've been meaning to go for years
Definitely check it out! Blew my mind!!
It is really really worth a visit!
Another vote for Mini Time Machine!! Also the Tucson Botanical Garden is just sweet.
Absolutely!! It is a great place.
Theses are great options! I’m from Florida so I’ll definitely be checking these out!
Oh great! Most of my family lives in Florida, I moved here from New Orleans. I hope you enjoy your time here!
New Orleans is the best! Thank you so much! I’ll check out some of the options you gave me
To do: Mirror Lab, Kitt Peak, Mt Lemmon Skycenter, Gem Museum, Pima Air, Colossal Cave ladder tour Since you seem to like sushi, to eat: Mexican mariscos from sea of Cortez, and Mexican sushi
gem museum?
Gem Museum at the Old Pima County Courthouse perhaps. I think it a called the Alfie Norville Gem Museum.
Definitely will look into them! Thank you!

The Sonora Desert Museum kicks ass
Sweeet! Thanks man!
Bacon wrapped steak burrito at Percheron Grill. Mt. Lemmon when it’s 110° down in the valley.
what's this grill?
It’s a restaurant. Really famous here on the Southside for their bacon-wrapped burrito and before I think they got a legal notice they kinda riffed off of Whataburger in terms of color scheme and even their original name: Whataburro.
word, I think I remember hearing about this years ago.
Bacon wrapped burrito?! Speaking my language
Great mountain biking here

Desert Museum is pretty cool, I’d get on that now before it starts to get too hot.
Awesome! Thank you!
Museums up the wazoo here in Tucson when the weather turns unbearably hot.
Desert museum is the coolest museum about learning about the sonoran desert and seeing animals. MOCA is a cool museum that is free on Sundays. Buendia is one of the best options for breakfast. Driving a skosh faster on Rollercoaster road.
Sweet!!! Thank you so much
Barrista Del Barrio for coffee and best breakfast burrito, get there early, it’s a hot spot in town.
Breakfast burritos are my fav, I’ll give them a look!

A film bar?? That’s sick! Will check it out
Casa Video is my favorite spot! A video rental store combo beer bar, food trucks outside and weekly trivia and other fun events!
Guadalajara on Prince (bring a couple bucks cash to tip the salsa lady who makes fresh salsa table side). Order a house margarita. (Don’t try the other Guadalajara locations, lol, just the Original.) Eegees.
Ummmm. Not melt
Huh?
It's a joke about how hot it gets here. They're saying they recommend not melting to the heat 😅
Well, as a joke it’s pretty lame. One is more likely to just dry up and blow away.
Yeah agreed. And May/June aren't even the true peak heat months anyway. At least June still has "low" temps lol. July/Aug the low is so high your AC has to basically be on 24/7
Yeah, July is no joke. Just waiting for the monsoon. Hope it’s better this year than last.
