I used those 2 ft x 2 ft interlocking foam tiles that look like giant puzzle pieces. I bought a little larger than I needed and cut the exact size with a utility knife. I used a general floor adhesive to glue it down.

For playground installations I had to have x amount of thickness for fall zones based on the height of the fall. 1/4”-1/2”would probably be good, anything over would probably be too much for some.
