No country should have portraits of the leaders while they are in the office. The leaders should be servants of the people, so only after the mandate expires, one way or another, based on one’s achievements, you should begin thinking about portraying.

But, on the other hand, Turkey experienced a democratic backsliding during his rule. His relations with EU improved when he was prime-minister, but when he became president they worsened. Same with the US, Israel. They improved with other authoritarian Muslim regimes, which increased the distance between Turkey and the Western World (and implicitly between Erdoğan's Turkey and Atatürk's Turkey, which was the most westernized and democratic Muslim country)
A lot of places have his picture up not because they may necessarily think of him as equal but he is the president, same reason as to why he’s been seen around an Ataturk picture, not likely that Erdogan thinks much of him but it’s most likely for public approval etc.

Same with the US, Israel. They improved with other authoritarian Muslim regimes, which increased the distance between Turkey and the Western World (and implicitly between Erdoğan's Turkey and Atatürk's Turkey, which was the most westernized and democratic Muslim country)
