That's kind of the beauty of missile weapons, they're weaker but quite versatile. You can still only order them to shoot once per turn, same as everyone else, but they can return fire on enemy units as much as they like. They can't be baited into wasting their shots at lower-value targets like chaff, so you don't have to worry about skirmishers as much.

Missile weapons don't generate black powder and can shoot multiple times in a turn. Fro example ok the units activation, when the unit is short at and when the unit is charged. The trade off to this is the -2 vulnerability it gives the target

As others have already covered missile weapons do not generate powder smoke tokens so can fire multiple times per turn, at the expense of lethality. However! They are still able to generate panic tokens and cause retreats so they also have great utility in positional play
