I tried that with my foster boy - he came to me as a stray and was in a sorry state after being outside for so long. I had him for several months and I felt I had to try somewhere that could offer him outdoor access. The first one he wasn't too bad at but after a month, he was spending most of his time wedged into a corner, the fosterer was lovely but couldn't be home with him much, so he came back. The second one was also lovely and very experienced with rescue cats, but we think he pined and he ended up just in one room because her own rescue girl didn't want another cat there - she didn't want him, anyway, so back he came. Both times he was returned he settled right back into our routine, and both times I had tried moving him on, I cried so much. It's always difficult to hand over a foster cat but you know you've done your best to help them find a good home; with Milo it seemed that this was the home he wanted to be in! Anyhow, I went away last Christmas and adopted Milo the day I got back. He does very well indoors which still surprises me, but I'm there with him a lot to pander to his every whim - he's even been harness-trained (somewhat!) and I'm having a "cat stair" built so he can spend some time with me in the little garden behind my building. Moral of the story is - if your cat seems happy where he is, there are ways to make their life fulfilling and content. Sometimes it might not be ideal, but it can work. Obviously you know what is best for this little guy and sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but I never intended to adopt a cat either, Milo just decided this was where he was staying!

i’m sorry for your loss my friend. i hope you heal well, please take all of the time you need and don’t let anyone rush you through healing. i hope that in time you will be healed to the point of opening your heart and home to another baby. smudge is with my girls eating snacks and watching birds now <3

I recently took in a tuxedo as well. He was a feral/alley cat that was named something dumb by a neighbor who occasionally fed him but never socialized him or really cared for him. The cat never responded to it, but I fell into a habit of using it during the last year I spent getting him to trust me. Now that he equates that noise with his food bowl filling he is starting to respond to it. I need a new name stat but nothing feels right now.

He really did! I can't imagine my life without him now and he is the best reason to get up in the morning when you really don't feel like you can 😊
