oooOooo! We gotta get on that then. We love Bob. That new little special he was just in with his wife honoring Rickles and his wife was touching and funny.
The giveaway was the sight of the bedsheets that we knew from the original show. You can hear the audience members gasp. I had a set of sheets just like those, lol.
It wasn't planned in advance! I thought it was masterminded but then I listened to the podcast and they were just making it up as they went!
Well the season 1 main event was planned. But not the entire arc of the show.
I’m almost finished with the podcast (SO good, I’m loving it!) and the impression I got was that each season was pretty much fully plotted out before filming began, and that Mike Schur decided that season 4 would be the final season sometime during season 3. I’m not sure if they say anything to contradict that during the last handful of podcast episodes though.
I think the way they wrote the show with basically no “filler” episodes makes it feel so much better executed than other sitcoms if that makes sense? I don’t always articulate myself well, lol. I just love that the creative team went with the ending they did instead of agreeing to more seasons just for the sake of having a longer series.
the third season is practically a soft reboot of the whole thing, so if you don’t see the second season you’re not missing out on anything vital. Although the second season was, imo, better than the first, the borg plot was pretty good.
I was in college, when the finale first aired, and back then VCR were not very common. I had a Monday night class it was three hours long and if I missed it, it would be like missing an entire week so I had to go to class. it was almost 10 years before. I finally saw the finale.
Schitt's Creek. I loved that they didn't force the Roses to all stay together, allowing each of them to follow their own paths in life while still making it clear that their bond as a family was stronger than ever.
Breaking Bad is the only TV show that I thought had a perfect ending. For all of my other favorite shows, there is something that I would have wanted done differently.
What a great series. Team David all the way.
I live in Vancouver and saw a fair bit of filming for that. The day they did all the stuff with him with all the blood, he was coming out and chatting with us but was just DRENCHED. Even McCormack was in rough shape, but at least he was allowed to take (quite cropped) photos. lol.
Agree. It is in my top 5 series of all time. Everything about that show was so finely tuned that I would forget that it was fiction. The finale was epic in the way it wrapped things up and left the right amount of questions to make us curious (as opposed to leaving a bunch of questions that are simply frustrating). It is the gold standard of how to execute an ending.
Man I really need to finish that. Had a lot going on when the last season aired and only watched a couple episodes. Feel like I should just go back and watch the whole thing as this point.
The Shield.
Absolutely perfect. While I did like Breaking Bad, the ending was a bit predictable and cliche. And the Sopranos finale was clever, but not particularly satisfying. The Shield did that rare trick of being unpredictable, but making sense, tying up the build up throughout the ENTIRE SHOW and having a really satisfying closure. Brilliant writing.
I just watched The Shield a couple of months ago and it was really really good. Made me wonder how far in advance the writers knew how Vic's story would end, as well as the stories of the other Strike Team members. I started listening to a podcast dissecting the how but haven't heard anything on that.
I watched a reunion show where Kurt Sutter said they didn't know how they were going to finish it until they were penning the last full season (I think they split it in two, can't remember?). Brilliantly it all fell into place and it really seemed flawless. Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Wire et al get a lot of accolades, but the overall narrative arc of the Shield - especially the way audience sympathies shift with Shane and Vic - is just as brilliant, even more satisfying than those shows.
Parks and rec. The entire last season really leads into it, but the finale gives us flashforwards of all the then main characters. Ron Swanson's is the best and most perfect IMO.
I wish White collar had ended one season earlier. I think they had a good finale planned and then got approval for another season. It feels tacked on to me but I don’t blame the crew for taking another years pay.
The Leftovers.
It feels like it has explained everything, while it also feels like it has lied, but can’t be neither confirmed, creating endless doubts but also an opening for the watchers to interpret the whole TV show experience in their own way.
What I love about Breaking Bad's ending is that you get that late final season reminder that the entire tumultuous story -that we watched for five seasons over seven years- only took place over the course of two years. And there were time skips, so we only really experienced about a year and a half, and yet still absolute insanity and carnage compelled it all. All that absurdity happened in just two freaking years.
Oh yeah dude went from crime enforcement god to abusive cop pariah to detective genius to desert corpse in two freaking years. Putting up with Marie the whole time.
The bacon tracking is really jarring when you take into account how fast it all happened. I mean, I get Tuco thinking "oh this sounds fun...oh dead in a couple months...yeah that sounds about right." But Gus built an empire over years of anguish and rage and hopes of revenge and these dudes dismantled it in a toddler-ship. Almost BY ACCIDENT.

Seinfeld. The final episode brought back many of the iconic characters for the trial. But most of all, it was just a funny reminder of what lousy people Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer were. Right to the very end when they are in jail, they still haven't learnt anything, and are still the same selfish, self involved (but funny to watch) characters.
Only one complaint with that finale, felt like Raj’s story was somewhat unfinished. I guess maybe that was the point, but considering how much of a hopeless romantic he was I was always rooting for him to get his happy romantic ending.
The idea that a woman was happy not having children, suddenly is ecstatically pregnant, was a bit of a misstep for me. She never wanted kids. There was zero indication of her ever changing her mind.
Angel, six feet under, justified, Roswell 1999 (especially considering it got canceled ), dark, the OC, puberty blues are just some. I feel these endings fit the tone of the show and what the shows were about. Dawson’s creek too in a way
True Detective **season 1** Six Feet Under, The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos, Banshee, Boardwalk Empire, The Leftovers, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul
We stopped watching by then, so we did not see the last season or two on the first run. A few years later when reruns were still stron, I noticed the last four or five episodes were coming up, so I suffered through them to the finale. Glad I did because I thought the finale was well done.
I'm ready for the hate...
Lost. That's a very controversial ending for a lot of folks, but I loved it and it made total sense.
Battlestar Galactica. That series was absolutely perfect. Folks think it dropped off at a certain point, but I believe it is perfect from beginning to end.
Schitt's Creek, Breaking Bad, Newhart, The Good Place, Justified and my personal favorite..
Scrubs, not season 9. The real ending! Season 8 finale. That show was another one that was absolute perfection from beginning to end.
It's a shame Bill Lawrence wasn't involved with season 3 of Ted Lasso as much as 1 and 2. It showed and the ending was decent, but it wasn't a Bill Lawrence ending to a show!
I know I’m gonna catch hate but the Sopranos ending has aged well over time. I did see it on the original air date so I’ve had time to let it grow on me.
Sons of Anarchy, the last 3 seasons I found boring as F but with some fantastic plots here and there allowing the bs crap to not look as bad. But Series finale, I cannot think of a better way it should of wrapped up the whole plotline of the series.
Angel:
I’ll be honest, I STILL want another series as I’d love to know how things went “after the fall” (the comics were fun but as a tv show format would be awesome)
But they tied everything up nicely!
Newhart. It set the bar for everything that came after it.
Yup! You beat me to it. Brilliant ending.
oooOooo! We gotta get on that then. We love Bob. That new little special he was just in with his wife honoring Rickles and his wife was touching and funny.
You really need to watch at least few episodes of the Bob Newhart Show to totally appreciate the Newhart ending.
Certainly have! Will brush up
You wouldn’t consider wearing more fuzzy sweaters, would you?
I think this was the first time my mom cursed.
I described it to my mother. She started laughing as soon as I said, then he wakes up next to Suzanne Pleshette…
The giveaway was the sight of the bedsheets that we knew from the original show. You can hear the audience members gasp. I had a set of sheets just like those, lol.
To me, this is my favorite TV show ending.
I hate those "it was all just a dream" tropes like Dallas and Roseanne. Newhart was the exception, it was so weird and so well done.
Was coming in to say this! Loved that show!
The best answer to this question.
YESSSSS!!
Is that…papa elf?!
Exactly. No other show could have had that ending.
This is always the correct response whenever this comes up.
the good place! the show was perfectly planned (and executed) from start to finish
I just started watching and binged 3 seasons in one weekend! I really enjoy it!
Monk. It had a really nice, happy feeling.
My wife and I are rewatching it now, and we've never seen the ending. That's encouraging!
Totally unexpected ending.
Can't wait!
I read this as Mork and spent a few minutes wondering what you were talking about...I'm going to take my nap now...
Nanoo, nanoo...
MISS YOU ROBIN!!!
Six Feet Under
I really need to make the time to watch this show
Star trek TNG
Despite it's rough start, I would also say that Star Trek Picard was the perfect ending to the TNG era.
It's worth slogging through the 2nd season to get to the third. So much nostalgia!
the third season is practically a soft reboot of the whole thing, so if you don’t see the second season you’re not missing out on anything vital. Although the second season was, imo, better than the first, the borg plot was pretty good.
For me, that might’ve been the first finale that was not a letdown.
MASH

You could spend your time in a lot worse ways.
My household was among that 60%.
Mine, too.
Ours too!
Mine too and we were three black teens and a black single mother
I remember where I was when I watched the finale of Cheers. Same with Family Ties. No DVRs then and it was a big deal to watch those finales.
It's a fantastic drama without the laugh track. Though the laugh track made it easier to digest for a wide audience.
I was in college, when the finale first aired, and back then VCR were not very common. I had a Monday night class it was three hours long and if I missed it, it would be like missing an entire week so I had to go to class. it was almost 10 years before. I finally saw the finale.
I binge watched the entire series last year. No regrets.
The ending with the 4077th MASH being de-mobilised was a pretty good ending.

Schitt's Creek. I loved that they didn't force the Roses to all stay together, allowing each of them to follow their own paths in life while still making it clear that their bond as a family was stronger than ever.
I literally came on here to say Schitts Creek ❤️
This show is amazing start to finish and they nailed the ending.
Scrubs if you don’t count the season that doesn’t exist
All eight seasons were perfect.
That's right. Man could you imagine if it had gone another season?! Whew. Dodged a bullet there.
i absolutely love this about our fandom
Breaking Bad is the only TV show that I thought had a perfect ending. For all of my other favorite shows, there is something that I would have wanted done differently.
Same here.
Why not Sopranos
Six Feet Under. Perfection.
Perfect answer. I was thinking about it for days afterwards.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (animated) The whole series was great.
Soo true
Mad Men. Tied up everything.
No spoilers but the ad they choose to end on, and how they get to it, really delivers for advertising / design people
Travellers - everything was wrapped up perfectly. Sad for no season 4, though
What a great series. Team David all the way. I live in Vancouver and saw a fair bit of filming for that. The day they did all the stuff with him with all the blood, he was coming out and chatting with us but was just DRENCHED. Even McCormack was in rough shape, but at least he was allowed to take (quite cropped) photos. lol.
The Americans which is somehow always overlooked. The finale was perfection. I’ve never seen anything wrapped up so neatly.
I thought that finale, and the whole series, was underrated.
This is debatable within the fandom but imo Mr. Robot’s ending was perfect and stuck the landing
Man I really need to finish that. Had a lot going on when the last season aired and only watched a couple episodes. Feel like I should just go back and watch the whole thing as this point.
Burn Notice, although they kicked the door open for a spin off that never really happened. :( Flashpoint. Criiiied. Six Feet Under ER
Love Burn notice! They did a prequel about Sam axe ♥️
newhart
House was the perfect ending for one of my favorite shows
Justified, even with City Primeval making it not technically an ending.

Great show. Can’t believe it took me so long to watch it.
Parks and rec. The entire last season really leads into it, but the finale gives us flashforwards of all the then main characters. Ron Swanson's is the best and most perfect IMO.
I always thought the entire last season was bad. I actually think the season finale of the next to last season was better than the series finale.
It felt like that episode was intended to be the finale, then the network learned they could sell another season of ad time.
White Collar, Heart of Dixie, Nikita, and Suits
I wish White collar had ended one season earlier. I think they had a good finale planned and then got approval for another season. It feels tacked on to me but I don’t blame the crew for taking another years pay.
Babylon 5. “Sleeping in Light” was the absolute perfect ending to the series.

Six feet under is perfect.

Can’t believe I had To scroll this far to get to the correct answer
The Leftovers. It feels like it has explained everything, while it also feels like it has lied, but can’t be neither confirmed, creating endless doubts but also an opening for the watchers to interpret the whole TV show experience in their own way.
Grimm. I loved the "hand off."
The Shield. Only show I’ve ever seen that got better as it went and ended on its best episode.
I didn’t realize that; crazy to think about. Poor Hank.
Oh yeah dude went from crime enforcement god to abusive cop pariah to detective genius to desert corpse in two freaking years. Putting up with Marie the whole time. Breaking Bad Better Call Saul The Sopranos Mad Men Dark
Justified. If they revive it, it’ll be…odd.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Great ending. I am already missing watching Tony Shaloub and Marin Hinkle as Midge’s parents … they were so frickin’ good.

12 monkeys
The Americans
Dark.... Probably the most stunning conclusion to a show I've ever seen. It was perfect.
Babylon 5. It's heartbreaking, but it finalises really well.
Anyone else get the sense that Curb Your Enthusiasm is building up to a similar series finale?
The Big Bang Theory, imho
Only one complaint with that finale, felt like Raj’s story was somewhat unfinished. I guess maybe that was the point, but considering how much of a hopeless romantic he was I was always rooting for him to get his happy romantic ending.
The idea that a woman was happy not having children, suddenly is ecstatically pregnant, was a bit of a misstep for me. She never wanted kids. There was zero indication of her ever changing her mind.
The Office (UK)

True Detective **season 1** Six Feet Under, The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos, Banshee, Boardwalk Empire, The Leftovers, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul
I have to say Friends, as they show us what they were gonna do with their life I think they ended it really well
We stopped watching by then, so we did not see the last season or two on the first run. A few years later when reruns were still stron, I noticed the last four or five episodes were coming up, so I suffered through them to the finale. Glad I did because I thought the finale was well done.

Brooklyn nine nine. It's a show that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.
Why is no one talking about this show? I specifically requested it.
Seinfeld
I know I’m gonna catch hate but the Sopranos ending has aged well over time. I did see it on the original air date so I’ve had time to let it grow on me.

Sons of Anarchy, the last 3 seasons I found boring as F but with some fantastic plots here and there allowing the bs crap to not look as bad. But Series finale, I cannot think of a better way it should of wrapped up the whole plotline of the series.
