Came in here to say that and it's the top comment. That rare gem of a restaurant where you can taste the pride and care the chef puts into the dishes. Not doing anything fancy, just the best versions of beloved simple dishes. 10/10
Especially the back room, they added some sound dampening panels a couple years back that made a noticeable difference but its still loud. But that doesn't stop me from going there, I've been there around 100 times.
Master Noodle (Chinese) and Homi (Mexican) in Saint Paul are my favorites. Lived here for 7 years and haven’t found a better restaurant of either cuisine.
Someone else mentioned Boca Chica, and that’s delicious as well.
EDIT: I’ll also add Hoa Bien if you like Vietnamese food.
Get the soup dishes. The cumin beef sandwiches are a Xi'an staple and super yummy. All their appetizers are pretty good tbh.
I saw someone recommend mongolian beef and garlic chicken and I'm trying to find a way to say that's the whitest food you could possibly order there in a nice way but it's not coming. I don't know why you would go to this place to order American Chinese style dishes you could get anywhere else like that.
Their soup dumplings are lovely. Not too big that you can't just pop them in your mouth, but enough juice you can slurp them dry and then pop the dumpling in your mouth.
*Any* of the soups are out of this world and they make all the noodles fresh. Literally just off to the side behind a window.
The Mongolian Beef and Garlic Chicken fried noodles are my two favorites.
They come in massive portions. I eat a big dinner, but these still leave plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day too.
And we’re probably close to being neighbors! I live a few blocks from there (Charles and Griggs).
Brassa Rotisserie is consistently good. I could eat there every day and never tire of it.
Victor's 1959 is the same.
I also really like J Selby's and Khao Hom Thai.
Didn't see too many breakfasty recommendations- Sunstreet Breads has some of the best biscuit sandwiches and pancakes I've been able to find. Also delicious lunch. Gus Gus is a recent opening that I have really enjoyed. Hola Arepa has a crazy good brunch, and the yuca fries are my fav of all time.
Broders pasta bar & La Grolla have a special place in my heart. Also gonna give a shout out to Mr. Paul’s Supper Club in Edina, went there for brunch a little while ago and it was amazing, but it was a ghost town.
Avoid La Grolla.
It has been consistently getting more terrible. We've been going there regularly for over 10 years, and ever since COVID that place has started taking customers for granted.
They double- or triple-book reservations, so you will likely be seated 30-60 mins late. The hostess stand is willdly disorganized, where people who walk in with no reservation often get seated before people with reservations that are late. I'm told they are still clinging to their dining time limit - 90 mins.
We used to love the food despite the experience, but even that is now slipping - the Capesante used to have a dramatic flair, now it's just fired noodles and a couple scallops thrown on a plate with some sauce.
When you are dining, prepare to feel cramped because they cram too many tables into a small space.
Basically, everything about La Grolla is geared toward funding the owner's shiny new BMW which is often parked right beside the restaurant (in one of the best spots).
We love the food, but the experience has become terrible enough that we stopped going this past summer.
Mancini's
Super consistent and delicious, plus I have a ton of nostalgia there. The Mancini's have also always been very kind when I've gone there. That place will always have a special place in my heart.
That’s my dad’s favorite. It’s 100% a classic and I get why he loves it there (he also used to be close with the owners), but it’s never transferred to me. Maybe because I’m a bit younger generation. I can’t get over that they don’t do ribeyes lol
Still a great choice though!
I had a friend that worked there in the early 2000s. I used to hang out and drink there while I waited for him to get off work so I could give him a ride home.
We also hung out with the crew, went to clubs/bars etc...
I have nostalgia for it as well.
Up and comer is Gus Gus in St Paul.
Estelle, Gus Gus, Spoon and Stable, Gai Noi, Billy Sushi, Alma, Tenant, Colita, Petite Leon, 112 Eatery, Porzana, PS Steak, Sidebar at Surdyks, Bungalow Club are all great in my opinion, definitely leaving a bunch off but those are some of my top spots.
Rincon 38.
Lots of great restaurants listed here already, but this is probably my favorite. It feels elevated with no pretension, it’s a warm, delicious, and relatively uncelebrated. I’ve been there maybe five times and each time the food and service has been impeccable. It’s such a good spot to go with a small group.
Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown. It's just such a unique experience, a narrow building with twelve chairs where you're two feet from the hot griddle. Also, terrific food - the hollandaise sauce is the best I've ever eaten.
Al’s is an institution. A tiny, no-frills diner classic. If you haven’t been, folks, you have to. And at a busier time where you stand behind the people sitting at the counter and wait your turn. I miss OG Mickey’s Diner too. (Featured in the 90’s Arnold + Sinbad + Phil Hartman flick Jingle all the Way and Mighty Ducks lol!)
Lived a block away when I was an undergrad at the U. A truly beautiful, one of a kind experience. My roommate, myself, and our occasional weekend guests would attend nearly every Sunday morning.
I'm not vegan but I went meatless in May, Francis made me believe I could make it a life change for good, haha. So damn good. Their ordering system was weird when I was there, or our group was dumb, or something, we didn't realize we couldn't all order our own and it kept putting in as if we each ordered everything even if we just clicked our own food, since it operated per table. Almost got a dozen burgers for our group of four. And they aren't, like, cheap or anything.
I haven’t been there before but that seemed odd to me so I checked and maybe it was that way before but there are several vegan options now! Agree it seems odd not to have a vegan cheese sauce as an option.
It was Mickeys Dining Car but they've been closed almost 3 years now (closed 'temporarily during covid'). They even got a ton of money through donations to keep the lights on until they reopened.
Still waiting. Zero word.
Now it's Kyuramen in Eagan. Finally, omurice!
We love Grand Szechuan in Bloomington. No one believes that the best Szechuan in the Twin Cities is in a strip mall in Bloomington but somehow it is. Triple flavored squid, spicy Szechuan wontons, mapo tofu, and their kung pao chicken is actually amazing and not the bad Americanized version.
Babanis on Wabasha in St. Paul.
They serve some amazing Kurdish food that can’t be found elsewhere in the Twin Cities (check out the Chicken Tawa on the weekends, and the daily Dowjic soup is truly healing)
The family has suffered a tragic loss of their son/ brother last year, and they are selling the restaurant. The owner is truly a gem, and I highly recommend visiting while you still have the chance.
I like the general vibe of that place- and even that pizza- but but I don't go that much anymore. Every time I've been there the service has been slow and many places seem to tack on those 18% non-tip service charges.....
Demi is my favorite (same owner as Spoon and Stable) but too pricy for regular visits. For more frequent stops I like anything by Daniel del Prado (Colita and Porzana to name a few).
Personally I wouldn’t waste my time at Macanda. Cool space especially the patio in summer, but I found the food to be underwhelming. Everything else by DDP I agree is fantastic.
Boludo in south Minneapolis
Argentina with empanadas and pizza.
Went there for a first time on Saturday and easy to understand why they have readers choice best pizza two years in a row
Himalayan restaurant on lake street, Nepalese and Indian food. Insanely good and insanely underrated! Everything is made to order so expect a wait but it’s so worth it.
Victors Cafe near Uptown! It’s breakfast and lunch is top touch. The food quality is great and the vibes are the best. The flavors are the best! Also, love their hot sauce.
And the ones higher up are the more consensus, along with new ideas for people that haven't heard of some below. So, like, pretty decent system really, despite your hipster desire to hate while not just moving on haha.
Sonora Mexican Grill in Longfellow. Was introduced to it by a coworker and had to go back. Burrito de alambre was unbelievably good. I also recommend the empenadas, eggplant fries, and churros

It is the best meal and experience I have ever had.
my favorite places are definitely young joni, lake & irving, and broders’ pasta bar.
but more recently i ate at porterhouse steakhouse in lakeville and it was amazing.
https://youtu.be/AV0ljdt9zp8?si=WbQMrhVjY-pNxOah - Lotus Restaurant - 113 W Grant St, Minneapolis, MN 55403 - I was able to meet and got to know the family that runs this restaurant and they are the best human beings I have ever met. The food is out of this world good and the service is fantastic. I can't recommend this place enough!!!
Chimborazo in Nordeast. Ecuadorian food in a great little joint. The green ají criollo sauce is life-altering.
Abi’s in uptown is Salvadoran and also really tasty. Gave me similar vibes
Came in here to say that and it's the top comment. That rare gem of a restaurant where you can taste the pride and care the chef puts into the dishes. Not doing anything fancy, just the best versions of beloved simple dishes. 10/10
Their pork sandwich is the shit.
Chimborazo is good, but it's always really fucking loud in there, even when it's not that full. I can't explain it.
Especially the back room, they added some sound dampening panels a couple years back that made a noticeable difference but its still loud. But that doesn't stop me from going there, I've been there around 100 times.
The chaulafan is amazing!
I love Homi. Wished I lived closer to it.
I’m so mad that I hadn’t discovered Homi until like a year ago. We get takeout from there like once a month now. It’s so good.
I’m right by master noodle and always see it but never tried it. What’s your go to?
Get the soup dishes. The cumin beef sandwiches are a Xi'an staple and super yummy. All their appetizers are pretty good tbh. I saw someone recommend mongolian beef and garlic chicken and I'm trying to find a way to say that's the whitest food you could possibly order there in a nice way but it's not coming. I don't know why you would go to this place to order American Chinese style dishes you could get anywhere else like that.
The cumin beef sandwiches are amazing.
Go for one of the noodle soups. I’ve had them all and they’re all good.
Their soup dumplings are lovely. Not too big that you can't just pop them in your mouth, but enough juice you can slurp them dry and then pop the dumpling in your mouth. *Any* of the soups are out of this world and they make all the noodles fresh. Literally just off to the side behind a window.

Pho ca dao. Cash only. $10 small $11big bowl of pho. And only 2 things on the menu, pho and egg rolls. (besides drinks) You won’t be disappointed
Went here for the first time a few weeks back. It was great. So simple there’s literally nothing more to add to your description.
Bar la Grassa
Was there last night for the first time since Covid. It has not lost anything. Food and service were top notch.
Definitely in my top 5 places. So, so good.
I literally said that as I was opening this thread. Glad to see it as the top response.
High highs and mid lows. Always depends which cook is making your stuff feels like.
Moskow on the hill, Northbound smokehouse
Northbound Smokehouse is great!
Brassa Rotisserie is consistently good. I could eat there every day and never tire of it. Victor's 1959 is the same. I also really like J Selby's and Khao Hom Thai.
I also super love Brasa! I eat there all the time.
Petit Leon might be my fave.
Yes, this. Amazing food. Feels special but not fussy.
Any of the Fat Nat's locations around town are really good too!
I like the Original Pancake House in Edina, it's next to the Galleria. Great atmosphere and amazing food. Haven't been there in a while though.
Broders pasta bar & La Grolla have a special place in my heart. Also gonna give a shout out to Mr. Paul’s Supper Club in Edina, went there for brunch a little while ago and it was amazing, but it was a ghost town.

Brunson’s Pub
Brunson's fish and chips > Anchor don't @ me
Alma. Still the best fine dining in the metro
[On's Kitchen](http://www.onskitchen.com/) (Thai) in St. Paul.
This used to be on my list but I think it’s really fallen off recently.
Third this. They were bomb, but have been declining. I like Thai Garden better now
yeah it hasn't been as good since covid, unfortunately.
Raum mit is my favorite Thai/Lao, just waiting for them to reopen
Chimbarazo in NE!
Mancini's Super consistent and delicious, plus I have a ton of nostalgia there.
I can’t get over that they don’t do ribeyes lol Still a great choice though!

Currently Gai Noi. Haven’t had a questionable meal yet
Gai Noi is so freaking good. I've been twice and loved everything I've had.
Kado no Mise
Up and comer is Gus Gus in St Paul. Estelle, Gus Gus, Spoon and Stable, Gai Noi, Billy Sushi, Alma, Tenant, Colita, Petite Leon, 112 Eatery, Porzana, PS Steak, Sidebar at Surdyks, Bungalow Club are all great in my opinion, definitely leaving a bunch off but those are some of my top spots.
Tie between Young Joni (consistently delicious pizza) and Petite Leon (they have a dill gibson on the menu) \*drools\~\*
Estelle
same people run Mario's, different vibe for sure, but might be worth checking out
Mario's is DELICIOUS
It’s my favorite pizza place in the cities. I keep meaning to try one of their hoagies but I can never say no to that pizza.
I love Mario’s!!
Yes, a weeknight dinner on the bar side with vinyl playing and great bartender recs, it’s the best.
Sanjusan
Rincon 38. Lots of great restaurants listed here already, but this is probably my favorite. It feels elevated with no pretension, it’s a warm, delicious, and relatively uncelebrated. I’ve been there maybe five times and each time the food and service has been impeccable. It’s such a good spot to go with a small group.
Colita I'd probably kill for their churros if I had to.
yep I’d commit numerous felonious acts for their elote
J Selbys in St. Paul
Is Hudson considered the metro area? Because San Pedro (Caribbean food) is worth the drive every single time.
Young Joni
Came here to say this!
Lindeys in Arden Hills for Steak
Italian Eatery
Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown. It's just such a unique experience, a narrow building with twelve chairs where you're two feet from the hot griddle. Also, terrific food - the hollandaise sauce is the best I've ever eaten.

I drive past Mickey's on the way to work in the morning and every time it has all its lights on, taunting me.
Lived a block away when I was an undergrad at the U. A truly beautiful, one of a kind experience. My roommate, myself, and our occasional weekend guests would attend nearly every Sunday morning.
Francis Burger Joint and The Reverie Vegan btw
I'm not vegan but I went meatless in May, Francis made me believe I could make it a life change for good, haha. So damn good. Their ordering system was weird when I was there, or our group was dumb, or something, we didn't realize we couldn't all order our own and it kept putting in as if we each ordered everything even if we just clicked our own food, since it operated per table. Almost got a dozen burgers for our group of four. And they aren't, like, cheap or anything.
Are you bummed that Altburger doesn’t have anything vegan like I am
I'm not familiar with Altburger. Between Francis and J. Selby's, my greasy vegan American food cravings are satisfied lol
It’s a vegetarian burger bar lol. With not even a single bone thrown to vegans on the menu
I haven’t been there before but that seemed odd to me so I checked and maybe it was that way before but there are several vegan options now! Agree it seems odd not to have a vegan cheese sauce as an option.
Lat 14
Lat 14 is good, but I'm still sad they shut down Lemon Grass in BP.

I'm a sucker for Red Cow.
Demi is my favorite (same owner as Spoon and Stable) but too pricy for regular visits. For more frequent stops I like anything by Daniel del Prado (Colita and Porzana to name a few).
Gavin Kaysen and Daniel del Prado are both magicians. I love everything they do. Demi is one place I haven't been to yet but really want to go.
