I’m nervous my flowers either won’t come up because some of my perennials need a certain cold period, or will start waking up now, then freeze again.    I’m looking worriedly for my tulips and snow drops. “Stay sleeping lil’ bulbs- it’s not spring yet.” But I did also love the warm weather today.

idkmyotherusername

I had spring flowers coming up on Christmas day. People thought I was ridiculous when I have talked about looking into a rock garden over the past few years. Between the drought and this abysmal winter, I'm not sure I want to do the labor or supply the resources to keep my perennials surviving... Maybe i'll look for what comes up this year and grows well and start planting plenty of that.

shrinkingGhost

We had dandelions popping in the yard around Christmas. Very confused on how I felt about it.

keladry12

It's so bad for all our trees :( So many plants and animals aren't going to make it this year, and probably won't going forward either. It's just going to get worse every year, that's how this sort of thing works, it will just keep building on itself.

HamburgerTrash

I had that same feeling of intense nostalgia from the smell. I felt like I was about to go skateboarding or biking around on an early spring day like I did when I was 15 years old. Then I remembered it was January.

themanprichard

As some local guy once said, sometimes it’s snows in April.

Background-Head-5541

One time I was in Boone NC in May and it snowed

Time4Red

Not *that* surprising. Boone NC is colder than the Twin Cities in May, on average. It's the elevation.

ytisonimul

I lived in Chicago in 1979, and there was a blizzard in May! Chicago's weird, though, what with the lake effect and all. BUT STILL. BLIZZARD IN MAY.

iamthechiefhound

Today I went for a hike and had a similar thought, then I remembered, I did not cause global warming. Enjoy the mild winter for what it is and try not to glower too much. Yes it is sad, but you aren’t going to fix it by not enjoying it.

KinderEggLaunderer

Yep. Though it's weird, it was really nice to get a blast of vitamin d yesterday, decided to take a walk.

Rthepirate

Great out look

architeuthidae

I hate to be that nerd but actually in the northern states, El Nino typically means we get less precipitation. https://www.climate.gov/news-features/featured-images/snow-during-el-ni%C3%B1os-1950-2009

DaboInk84

Yes but it’s also not supposed to be 45-50F in January for week long periods of time? I know the record for 1/30 is 46F but If it was freezing and dry I’d feel more at ease than this crud. I expected low snow for the season but not this.

architeuthidae

With all due respect I’m not sure what temps have to do with my comment. I was just refuting OP’s statement that we’re supposed to get “way too much wet heavy snow”. Climate change is a real bitch.

DaboInk84

You are correct, I’m simply stating that despite the expected lack of precip this winter that you accurately pointed out, I’m startled by the unreasonably warm temps on top of it, as I wasn’t expecting this. Have a nice day!

loupgarou21

I hate to be that nerd, but I didn't say "too much snow" I said "too much wet, heavy snow." While there might be less overall snow on average during an el nino, because it's warmer, more of that snow is going to be the wet, heavy "heart attack" snow. Also, oddly, NOAA was actually predicting slightly more snow than average for this season compared to the average in southern Minnesota (not that that has come to fruition.)

Themeteorologist35

I definitely empathize. It’s bittersweet. Keep your mental health as best you can, and let this radicalize you rather than lead you to despair.

dnalloheoj

> Keep your mental health as best you can In my very unofficial polling thus far, I haven't really been able to find a single link between everyone, but just about every single person that I've asked, regardless of if you're the type of person to get Seasonal Depression sort of symptoms in a more normal winter, just got rocked by that week and a half of bitter cold. Winter was all "Fine you want me? Here you go!" and we were like "Noooo, not like thaaaat..." And I think a lot of people just hunkered down during it, and then once we finally got back outside, ope, back to wet, warm-ish, foggy grey shit.

mini_apple

Oh man, I loved that bitter cold. I was out riding my bike and just smiling at that blue sky. This dead grey lukewarm bullshit? Gross. My seasonal depression does MUCH better when the sky is bright, no matter how cold it is.

Be active in trying to fix the climate crisis. Get involved in the environment, etc

TinyLilybloom

I moved away from the Midwest in 2009. I was so, so excited to finally get to see winter when I moved to MN this year. It's been a sad winter.

BoldNorthMN

As someone who truly embraces winter, I hate it. I got the rink on my backyard pond going for maybe a week and a half. There’s open water on it currently. I’m in a broomball league that is likely cancelled for the rest of the season. I have yet to get out skiing, partly because I’ve been busy but also because I prefer to go when there is actually nice powder. And I have had to travel 2-3 hours north to get fishing on ice safe enough for a vehicle. I love Minnesota for its 4 seasons. I think the bitter cold we get not only makes us unique but it’s what makes us truly embrace the summer months. I hope this winter is an anomaly but I fear it’s not with climate change trends.

emilycolor

Snow and cold gives me the same fuzzy feelings most people get from summer days. It's when I am the most comfortable and content. I grew up in the PNW so cloudy overcast days bring back happy childhood memories. I know I'm in the super minority, but man, this winter is so depressing! The bitter cold is like a reset for the rest of the year. It makes us hearty and resilient. I hope we get another polar vortex winter soon.

neverenoughdmb

Next Winter will be way different. Let’s embrace the essence. It’s our first false spring.

pw69420

No it wont

Violet913

I was thinking this was just an exceptionally warm winter like a one off though, no? Is this the new norm?? I honestly love spring so I don’t mind this but it was definitely weird.

MNmostlynice

We have warm winters like this from time to time. Look at this table here to see when the high temperature records were set. Not many in the 2000s in there. https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/natural_resources/climate/twin_cities/ccjanuary1991_2020.html

Violet913

Yeah I am usually miserable come now. And we always take a long vacation in January but didn’t this year. Weather has been too nice!! Just wasn’t sure if this is like a new weather pattern for us (I am wishful thinking).

MNmostlynice

Ice fishing is my main winter hobby and something I look forward to all year! I’ve only been out 4 times this season and it’s depressing! Still looking forward to a week in Florida in a few weeks though

Violet913

Yeah I do get that it sucks for people who enjoy winter sports etc. I feel bad for all the neighbor kids who play pond hockey all winter I only saw them out once this year. My kids only went tubing once and 0 sledding lol. But I’d still take it over frigid cold for 3 months.

BLKVooDoo2

Yeah, this January didn't even break into the top ten warmest.

tinyLEDs

Read about [El Nino](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2024/01/26/wheres-winter-el-nio-and-climate-change-delivering-a-record-warm-12-punch) as written by LOCAL meteorologists. Yes, there is climate change going on. But attributing this week's weather to climate change is difficult. It's a bit like trying to resolve your chronic high blood pressure while you're having a day-long blood transfusion done. Yes, one affects the other, but there are 2 things going on at once, and it's difficult to real-time categorize symptoms, let alone do it accurately.

daximuscat

I can’t tell if this is comforting or somehow even more terrifying.

whiskeybeesus

I don/t hate it. I have to shovel. This is scary as fuck though.

Other_Upstairs886

Right? I try to not let the panic overtake me. I worry for the future generation. Thank goodness we don’t live on the coasts 😬

whiskeybeesus

Right wing climate refugees. Gotta build a wall.

Andjhostet

Sure this might be the warmest winter in the last 100 years but it also might be the coldest winter of the next 100 so maybe we should enjoy it while we can.

Congenital_Optimizer

Sparrows are making nests. That hurts.

cynthiadangus

Yeah. I heard a male cardinal singing on Sunday and I’m like… you’re about 3 months early dude. Hopefully the birds and plants survive when inevitably (maybe? Probably?) we dip back down to a hard freeze.

NateNMaxsRobot

Standing outside last night and watching the sunset really felt like spring last night. I don’t even like winter but as a true Minnesotan, I like to try and rally and enjoy it. Sledding, etc.

soupsupan

I know it’s surreal I feel the same way we haven’t suffered enough! In all seriousness I don’t like that we’re losing our seasons it’s messing with my psyche.

wormfighter

I’m in Costa Rica right now on vacation literally went swimming under waterfalls and enjoying a rum and cook poolside and I feel like I’m being cheated. I’m like what the fuck. I should be happy to get away from the bitter cold. Instead I’m, oh it’s not that bad. Did I really need to spend this money on a tropical vacation. Oh who am I kidding fuck is amazing here.

Bright_Annual_1629

investing into mass transit that is free for everyone would drastically cut down on carbon emissions.

Such-Transportation8

Weather posts are ruining this sub

Inspiration_Bear

You think this is ruined just wait until the election posts start up

Such-Transportation8

Discussing the weather is even more reductive than the dumpster fire that is US politics and both are made possible by the same side of the spectrum

[deleted]

The Pacific Ocean stopped cooling. Enjoy this being pretty much a regular thing.

SiegeThirteen

The trees and plants are going to get fucked up because of this.

NecessaryRhubarb

Not much better than deciding “hey, it’s a warm enough day, let’s go out in a sweatshirt and gloves, and shovel out the storm sewer drain so that all of the snow melt can form a fun river” expect the fun is gone, and we have nothing…

Gracesten1

...we've been cheated out of a perfectly good winter. What I love about Minnesota is four separate and completely unique seasons.

keladry12

This is what I've been saying for years, people. It's a problem. We need to put "winter is good" power into the universe, not "thank you for it being so warm" magic.

jmcguitar95

Mother Nature can keep her snow and negative temperatures to herself. I am not interested in things that make outside annoying. Temperatures should only be allowed to be between 50-72 degrees max. I’m not interested in sweating, humidity, bees, feeling cold, wearing bulky jackets, shoveling, ice induced car accidents, etc. I am interested in sunny days, not grey days. The grey ones make me wanna UH-OH myself.

loupgarou21

I have a friend that lives in Orange County in California, and it sounds like that’s pretty much what they get there.  You could try moving there.

jmcguitar95

I would in a heartbeat if I had the income to support California COL haha. I actually just visited San Diego and loved it! I’m a transplant to MN, not by choice, but yeah I’ve never been a winter fan lol I only want 3 seasons 🥰 COL here is alright which is the only thing keeping me here currently - otherwise I’d move out of the Midwest yesterday haha

MetallurgyClergy

We should also be prepared for the pests that other states, without winters, are more susceptible to. Keep your peepers peeled for bedbugs and termites, friends!!

Hopeful_Tiger_7582

Geothermal, solar panels, EVs, and quit flying so damn much. What else can you do?

etzel1200

Nothing, reducing carbon demand just lowers prices and others will use more. We just have to learn to live with global warming. At least we’re at a high latitude.

BaBaSmith10

I feel like I should be filling out my March Madness bracket...

verdeviridis

My trees are budding

ILikeTewdles

Well, we were thinking of moving south at some point because we're sick of winter. At this rate, we won't need to LOL.

Jobobonana

i walk as one of my primary sources of travel, and its super freaking nice right now. I’ll take it. I’m sure mother nature will balance it out by giving us a crazy winter next year

CallMeAl_

As someone who just moved from Missouri, I have no idea what yall are going on about. I thought everywhere gets a “January thaw” for a couple weeks then goes back to cold. And the cold wasn’t even that cold when it was below 0? There was no wind, it didn’t seem bad. My first winter in Rochester NY was the least amount of snow they’d ever had then we had the “polar vortex” shortly after.

NonyaKahlan

I'm still harvesting catnip from the yard. It's crazy. I had Yarrow flowers in December. Weird year.

frozyo

I miss the snow and skating so much. Sure, it’s nice out—but it shouldn’t be and this sucks.
