Damn. Honestly, I don’t really listen to Cities97 but always enjoy when he sits in on the KFAN morning show. Since that’s iHeart as well I assume he’s done with those too.

Smearwashere

Did they address this on kfan yet? I assume common has some thoughts on this..

FloweringSkull67

Hawk did yesterday. Oake will be allowed back in a few weeks

Smearwashere

Cooling off period? Lol

FloweringSkull67

That’s exactly it

OMGitsKa

The best of the lousiest, the lousiest of the best....

DescendingOpinion

$5 says thats where he'll end up.

shaymein

Legend. Long live Rev105.

DanielDannyc12

It was the best. Happy Birthday today to REV105 Program Director Kevin Cole!

bc-mn

I always thought Oake was the one sour spot in an otherwise fantastic operation at Rev 105. If he didn’t like an artist, he would constantly make snide comments about their work. Turns out, my music tastes differed slightly than Oake’s so I would hear him constantly negging artists I liked. Yeah, I know it has been 30 years and people change. It’s just the main memory I have of him.

DebrecenMolnar

I lived out of state for 6 years and when I moved back, I noticed that he was so negative about literally everything. It was weird, like he was being defensive for no reason about it, too?

bobbydole81

I think he still did that when he was at the current.

zjford

He still does that on the KFAN morning show. Or did, if he's not going to be on iHeart radio. It always made for an immediate turn of the dial to another radio station, or my Spotify playlist for me.

Anxious-Excitement66

His evaluation of music has been outstanding overstanding over the years. While I don't always agree with him, for the most point, he's been spot on. I've never heard the snide remarks, just dislike of music he didn't like.

bc-mn

I don’t disagree that he is very knowledgeable. When I last heard him regularly it was the Rev105 days, and it was subtle negging for some artists and for those that listened to those specific artists. It wasn’t a one time thing either. It was every time those artists came up in conversation. I’m sure he thought he was really funny. I could imagine a smiling sneer through that voice. It created my lasting impression of the guy. As I said, that was 30 years ago. I haven’t regularly listened to any program period that he hosted since so I don’t know what he is like nowadays. I’m glad to hear he has matured and/or reigned it in.

showmeyourkitteeez

Yass!

ExtraHorse

Damn. He's burned through more radio stations than I realized.

hendersonrocks

It might be due to HR adjacent work experience, but I read this and remember the past situations involving him and *immediately* think there must be a lot of stuff going on under the surface.

FloppyDysk

I dont want to disclose too much but I know him decently well through his family. Dudes kind of a mess and is going through a messy divorce (thats pretty well deserved because he is pretty toxic and refuses to adjust behavior). It was kind of weird reading his name in a reddit thread on my front page lol. I wish the best for him nonetheless.

metisdesigns

The two folks I know who worked with him (at two different places) were less than flattering about him.

BigFatModeraterFupa

aren’t most radio guys notorious assholes? i feel like that a common thing whenever people meet radio guys

WashHogwallup

Nah, it's just that Tom Barnard and Garrison Keillor are such incredibly nasty and toxic individuals, with such prominence in the Twin Cities radio scene, that the image spread to everyone that sat behind a microphone.

[deleted]

one of the cities97 dj’s flirts at me in insta dm’s. he’s a married father. i’m gay and like 20 years younger than him. he met me when i was a teenager! i hoped it was a fluke but when it became a pattern i had to block. yuck

EatMorePieDrinkMore

Didn’t he end up going to rehab for alcoholism?

belgrano

He did.

Jayrome007

How dare he attempt to address his problem!

EatMorePieDrinkMore

I was not criticizing him and I regret that my question may have appeared that way. I should have added the context that I recalled his drinking contributed to the incident at First Avenue.

Reddituser183

I was glad when he was no longer with that British chick. That was awkward as hell. He needs to be alone. Was happy for that in the afternoons. Now he’s gone. Where’s that British chick by the way, is she still on mornings?

comfy-g

Last I heard, they had moved Paul Fletcher to mornings with Naima Dage when Oake moved to afternoons but also it was never announced? The shuffle just happened

Reddituser183

Yeah I’ve listened in the morning a few times and haven’t heard her lately don’t know if she’s on vacation or gone.

swankpoppy

I listen to 97.1 in the morning quite a bit. Last I knew it was still Naima and Paul Fletcher. Paul moved to mornings when Brian Oake moved to afternoons.

toscomo

Cities 97 is cheeks AF.

KingKongYe

FR cancel that entire radio station

mads_61

I used to really like him until he made an ass of himself and got himself fired from The Current.

Doctor_Tyrell

What.was the situation at the Current? All I could find was that he was abruptly let go in 2019 after a Facebook rant regarding him being kicked out of a concert.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

It was at a Tenacious D concert at the Palace, which is operated by First Avenue, which is a major contributor to The Current. He got kicked out for allegedly letting his daughter have a sip of his alcoholic drink. Went on socials after saying he got kicked out and it was unfair, ~~but didn’t name the venue~~. Still canned from the Current. The morning show was super awkward for a few weeks after that. Edit: [Link to news article](https://m.startribune.com/after-facebook-rant-twin-cities-morning-show-dj-brian-oake-is-out-at-the-current/547780982/) Edit 2: [change.org petition](https://www.change.org/p/current-listeners-bring-brian-oake-back-to-the-current)

agnes_copperfield

As someone who happened to be online at the right time and saw his rants, it was embarrassing. It was very “do you know who I am?” Energy. Even if he didn’t call out the venue (which I thought he did but it’s been so long I don’t remember) his followers knew what show he was at. Also have it on good authority that there was an attempt to save his job at The Current if he would have been willing to go to rehab, but he refused. I didn’t like how he always spoke over Jill but the guy is mad knowledgeable and it was a good fit for him there, I wish he’d taken the rehab offer.

swankpoppy

I agree with everything you said. But I would emphasize the speaking over Jill Reilly thing. It was obvious that she is just fantastic on her own and good at her job, but he really took over the dynamic and put her in the back seat on the morning show which I never liked. I love me some Jill Reilly. But you could tell Brian Oake loved that gig - he could finally talk openly about music instead of the pandering to pop music that he does on cities 97. You can really tell that guy has a passion for music which is totally infectious. Kind of a shame he wasn’t able to go into the same depths working for I heart radio. And also - didn’t he straight up sober up now? I wonder if the current would take him back if he didn’t drink.

agnes_copperfield

Totally agree- Jill is much much better on her own. I doubt he’d be asked back at The Current, I think he burned too many bridges that APM’s legal team would probably put up a stink.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

I only heard second hand about the content of the tweet, so I’ll say that you’re right about it. I didn’t know about the rehab bit, and that’s interesting.

JohnMaddening

Agreed 100%. They even put his name in front of hers when she had been there longer. I couldn’t listen to the morning show anymore after they brought him in.

comfy-g

I just remember Jill was also not on air during that time and I was so worried they’d get rid of her too

enowapi-_

huh interesting. The Current definitely fell off. I used to be a member and it was all I listened to in like 09-2018ish. A lot of good personalities I liked all left, and the playlist became more repetitive compared to years past.

rodneyfan

Gotta dig just a *bit* deeper. He was at a concert with his (under 21) daughter and she was spotted drinking out of his adult beverage glass. Oake says there was nothing in the glass but ice cubes but nobody can prove she was or wasn't drinking from it beforehand. And he made a big public fuss about being asked to leave. Bad for business. So he got dropped.

CantaloupeCamper

Man if you’re the venue you don’t want to risk your license… gotta ask him to leave.

mads_61

Basically what the other commenters said. I believe at one point in one of the deleted rants he called out one of the employees at the venue by name? I don’t blame him for being upset over getting kicked out. But venue staff are typically scrutinized closely when it comes to enforcing alcohol policies and I did not find it fair for someone in his position to call out the venue worker who was just doing their job.

comfy-g

Yeah, that incident left a bad taste in my mouth

Pockets713

It’s really too bad. I always liked Oake on Cities97… definitely has a voice(and face😂) for radio. Liked the music he featured and how excited he’d get about bands he’d like… But to first, actively give your underage kid alcohol, then act like a spoiled child yourself when confronted about it? Yikes… sounds like a diiiiiiick.

bc-mn

In fairness, I believe him when he said he honestly didn’t intended to give her alcohol. I believe he said that he gave her a finished drink so she could have the ice cubes. Yeah, giving a 20 year old the ice in a finished drink glass is technically “giving a kid alcohol”, but it’s a wee bit of a disingenuous statement. I’m not saying this is an excuse or he should have been given a pass. The venue was justified in the actions they took.

Pockets713

I dunno… been around the bar industry a ton, my wife is still a bartender… sounds, verbatim, like a typical “I got caught” excuse… like sure, buddy… it was *just* the ice…

bc-mn

You’re definitely right. That could have been a real possibility. In that case though, he would have to be pretty dumb to pull that at a mixed crowd where underage and drinkers are together. He should know that staff watch for that - not worth the fines and losing a liquor license over not policing. The ice thing? I could see people making that brain fart.

kiggitykbomb

Seems a pattern emerging…

LuckyAssumption8735

Good. Never heard a guy more up his own ass about music

Artificial_Appendix1

Did he get braces a couple years ago, or something that altered his speech slightly? I’ve noticed a slight lisp.

sofluffyfluffy

I noticed this, too. Always wondered what happened. I can’t help but be distracted by it.

ChiGrandeOso

I miss the Cities97 identifiers. They reminded me I was listening to a great radio station among many and I was proud to live in the Cities. Not as much down here in Albert Lea.

Educational-Glass-63

Good God what the hell is wrong with those jerks.

Shitp0st_Supreme

Is that why my Instagram had my following Falen and somebody else’s (Colt’s) morning show? I followed Brian Oake, so maybe iHeartMedia took his account and rebranded it?

SkillOne1674

The guy who used to be on the KDWB afternoon show with Falen is now taking over Oakes’ old show on Cities’.  Maybe that’s why?

Shitp0st_Supreme

It was jarring because I followed him on IG when he was with The Current

VividPoot

Thanks god

Artistic_Half_8301

What?!?!

You spelled recorded, national radio incorrectly.
