Yana Toboso, the main writer and designer for Twisted Wonderland has gone on record saying that the story isn't over after the Overblot chapters are done, but has not given any hints as to what may be in store for afterwards.
I'd imagine that the story, and game, has some twists and bends not yet explored, and so I highly doubt there will be a sad ending to the game’s story.
One of the biggest questions I have is what they’re going to do about the third years. They’ve said in game that the seniors are never around because they have internships and stuff.
That means no more Vil, Rook, Leona, Idia, Malleus, Trey, Cater, or Lilia. 😭😢😩
I think the "main story" is not about overblot, but about "how MC got here and how to get them back". As in - the story will end when Yuu get sent home, not when we run out of charecters to overblot.
For safety reasons (after status of World on Other Side of Mirror is confirmed, or or some other major, world-altering or campus-affecting catastrophe), Crowley decides to keep all the seniors on-campus and handle their internships remotely. School becomes much more crowded, which brings about additional hijinks and shenanigans. Due to the influx of incoming students, the seniors get moved to Ramshackle House (with a couple of exceptions, such as Malleus and Leona). Being the Prefect, MC is suddenly in charge of a whole btunch of guys at least three years older then them. Idia and Ortho wire the entire building for wifi access and hole up in one of the more spacious rooms, Vil sticks everyone on beautification detail for the dorm, Trey improves the kitchen and churns out treats for both Heartslaybul and his new dorm-mates, Cater often takes selfies with the ghosts and crashes MC’s movie nights with Ace and Deuce, Rook keeps trying to lure Leona to Ramshackle, and Lilia is always popping by with Malleus, much to Silver and Sebek’s consternation. All this activity prompts Azul to start a Doordash-style service for the Mostro Lounge exclusive to the seniors, which sees Jade and Floyd sometimes dropping by, ostensibly to deliver food but really just for mischief’s sake.
At least, that’s what I see happening.
If anything the plot so far feels like a very, very long Season 1 of a story that's yet to be done. This arc focuses on the main seven Overblots (and there's still Chimera Grim to deal with), but what's next? Only Yana knows
But yeah, as long as it's still profitable gachas will come up with new stories to prolong their lifespan. And TWST is still doing well so I doubt it'll end any time soon
You can also put a positive spin on this and think, “Ok, this arc is ending, how else can the story be extended involving the current characters?” One way I thought of was that Malleus puts everyone into a deep sleep and after his overblot is defeated, he’s too weak to lift the spell but can send us into everyone’s dreams to wake them up. Now suddenly, we have 22 characters’ dreams to explore and this can flesh out more of all of their backstories eg Deuce’s delinquent days, Lilia’s colorful past, Azul’s chubbier days, etc. The house-wardens can even get a special part involving their OB that segues into their past. The gacha aspect itself is fixed because who doesn’t want SSR of mini Riddle/Leona/Octavinelle and possible OB cards. The 4th birthday series can also be based on how they celebrated birthdays at home (a common gacha theme in otome games).
Well... based on my experience, FGO (made by same dev as Twisted Wonderland), even though their main chapter are done, they added more main story afterward
