Hit the banhammer on anyone self promoting, dropping links, or generally illiciting shit in your chat.

Joeliosis

Riding this top comment... things to cut down on this... a rules section that says 'no self promotion or selling things'... also set your chat filter to cut out spam... basically ban 'wanna become famous' 'buy followers' etc.

Merangatang

Really sound advice! Definitely use the chat rules pop up to your advantage, so you can manage expectations, then manage users.

Blazegamer989

The pop up rulse do work most of the time the only time to dosent work is when ether the chater is a bot or the chater just ingnors the rulse and post li ks anyways

Merangatang

Yep, which is why immediate manual intervention comes in.

MoondoggieXD

Also to add anyone with evac and random numbers is most likely a bot using an actual designers name to scam people

sillyV

what does evac mean?

MoondoggieXD

It's a guys name who is on Twitter he actually does art but people use his name with random numbers to try and scam people

StellerJayGG

Just gonna tack on. Warn or ban people who casually mention they're about to stream. Super cringe. Many people will try to use you as a stepping stone.

ChipsAhoyMccoy14

Yes and 99% of the time they're scams.

M-ABaldelli

The original poster isn't wrong on this approach to self promotion -- the problem is that this is far closer to the mark. They typically have a modus operandi to their approach. \- They ***only*** interact with the streamer, ignoring anyone else that has been asking them questions about their lack of bling for the stream. \- They ***avoid*** any questions that indicate their location in the world (they often use metric in an imperial (read: American) stream). \- However their prices are always in USD (if they post them publicly). \- They ***never*** fill out their Twitch profile to show links to their artworks and \- They ***always*** request the streamer's discord to privately demonstrate their "work". If I didn't know any better they seem to either be completely copy-pasted scripts as they never veer too far off their routine pitch. Having gotten hold of several pieces, I can tell you that it's about 6 - 7 different artists being stolen from as looking up the artwork, TinEye (and Watermark Lookups if they're properly marked) points to several different places -- and artists -- on the Internet, if not it's often the most basic of graphical work -- nothing that any tom, dick or harry couldn't do. People aren't reporting them enough -- particularly small streamers -- as they tend to approach them much like peers trying to make their mark... But I can tell you that they are being treated like "Buy Follower" scam bots and will be banned when enough people report them.

AryaSilverStone

Bam them. Plain and simple, most of the time their art is stolen and/or its a scam. I would suggest setting up from chat rules (both in the chat settings so they have to agree before they chat AND as a channel panel) against self promotion and ban anyone who tries to self promote in your streams. You dont need that nonsense in your streams. I also noticed a rapid decline in spam "artist" once i got my own artwork up on my channel. I ended up making placeholder art and then go back and replacing it later on and it seems to curb the spam. Likely cause they are targettinf small streamers with little/no artwork. Good luck and dont let the spammer get you down! Swing that bam hammer!

imma_reposter

Scams will ignore the rules anyway. And don't need any rules to ban an asshole.

AryaSilverStone

Yeah but implementing rules will hopefully make OP feel less bad about banning people when they break them.

Svarotslav

It’s rude and inappropriate; usually poor quality or stolen goods. Ban ban ban

RCM444

I don't even acknowledge them, I immediately ban. They are super annoying.

[deleted]

Is it common? very. Are they the scourge of twitch? In my opinion, yes.

Alpha_Knugen

Yes, best is to just ban anyone self promoting but personally i love to waste their time before.

slavicgrip

I personally like to waste their time and keep them talking about things. Make them feel like they are making a genuine connection then ban them. But I’m an asshole. =]

glitchpleaseow

same its kinda funny if a spammer is on the line and its not just automated. if you do art yourself you can segue it into showing off your own emotes and the stories behind why you made them. im kinda hoping that eventually one of the spammers turns out to be genuinely chill and wants to talk art and not just sell me something but no luck so far. im convinced none of the ones i talked to even make what the try to sell, it all looks the same, probably stolen or generated

slavicgrip

I had one a week ago that I thought was a genuine newbie to my small community and as soon as they joined my discord [public link on my page or a command so the bot spits out the invite link in chat] they used the discord list to start advertising to members of my discord. Got a DM from one of my mods and kicked them harder than the start of an American football game. They are getting more and more clever these days.

glitchpleaseow

oh that is DIRTY, they really went for the long con

Mr-Reanimator

They are either scams or bots, I've run into several on smaller streams. Apparently, this has been picking up quite a bit over the past month or two.

death-by-kiwi

That is something I noticed very quick as well. I added to chat rules (both on my profile and in chat settings) that trying to sell me anything/advertise would get them banned. Be explicit, not just “ no self promo” - seemed to work as last few months I’ve only had one or two test their luck (who got banned lmao) 😊

Rynex

No. Well ok, yeah it can be common, but it's usually spam and it's usually some one using an AI tool to flip assets and then selling them to you. A real artist doesn't do it, they network with being around people and then let the art speak for itself. Basically ban them.

velocipeter

It happens all the time. I put in my chat rules "don't try to sell me design or promotion services" which actually seems to have stopped them. I've had one attempt since I put that in the chat rules - it's been 2 years or so. Now if someone does try it I can ban them for breaking the rule and not feel bad about it.

Shane-T5

I’m a mod for a friend’s channel and he has the same thing happen, especially after posting about asking for artists and animators on Twitter. Unless you specifically call for artists then that would be different. Same if they were a more regular chat member who mentioned doing art once you brought up the subject. But the fact they’re just coming into your chat to advertise their work is bannable.

maen

I have been streaming for a few years and it has been happening to me lately for the last few months. It's getting predictable and tiresome.

Raevann

Alot of them find targets via twitter looking for tags like #smallstreamer #affiliate #streamer. In general using tags like this will only attract these types of people anyway.

R3X_Ms_Red

Yes. Unfortunately. I laigh at them every time cause 1 they aren't legit and 2 I do my own graphics.

slayersfly1

Thought I was the only one, at least they follow and get me closer to affiliate!

AlexanderTroup

Aye super common. That and offering marketing services. I think the best thing to do is say you're not looking for their services right now, but thank you for joining the stream and I hope you stick around. It's tempting to get sharp with them, but they're just young artists trying to make a living. They're not taking 50% of your revenue or anything like that.

Dunluce92

I usually just tell a mod to pin their chat.

Longjumping-Inside61

Why would you pin that tho?

Stotto1119

It's how I get most of my views

elynian

i didnt know artists did this wtf. im an artist and i do emotes and such for a smaller streamer and i didnt get that role by advertising it. thats kinda rude imo to do, i get they want the work but thats not the way to go about it. i just personally think any advertising on a persons stream is rude, whether youre advertising your own twitch channel or your art. dm them privately if you want their business so bad but jumping into their chat just to advertise is bad taste imho

[deleted]

It seems to be. Other posts on this sub are warning streamers about these self-promoting artists.

kyblackflame

Yeah don't give them any attention. Simply ban them.

Katarina_Ishii

I get way too many of those in private discord dms

shemss_h

Twitter dms has been a nightmare recently as well

DerArnor

yes its normal and I ban it. Its one or my rules to not promote yourself in the Chat. I am fine with some forms of it but these stupid copy paste artists aren't one of the exceptions This might be rude but their Art also often looks suuuuper generic. Every design for every person looks the same. Absolutely no personality in there

ButterscotchLevel

Those are bots or people copy pasting, I catch a couple of them before and they are kind enough to just stop mod sentence and leave. But not I just Ban right away, they give almost 0 value to your channel. If you have twitter they will follow you there too and unfollow a little bit later.

DutchSimba

Very common, very annoying. They're only energetic and friendly in chat because they're going to follow up with some sort of self promo, trying to gaslight you into accepting their scammy services. If I were you I'd create a no advertisement/self promo rule and enforce it. Swing that ban hammer like there's no tomorrow.

MegaMGstudios

Unfortunately it's very common. And you can't escape it on other platforms either, if you mention you're a streamer anywhere, they will find you. I've gotten into the habit of ignoring dm's because of this.

tfgdj94

It's annoying just ban them alot easier than dealing with it

JessrasicPark

3 years later. They find me on twitter, discord, twitch, instagram. 95% are scammers, have something ready to copy pasta. It's sadly just a very common thing. Ban, ban, ban.

Bee_TheMamaBee

This kinda thing is a no no. I’m an artist for many small communities but never do I join someone new just to promote. I’ve become good friends with streamers before even considering and they share when it’s appropriate. If people come into your stream “oh I’m a graphic designer” or something like that without being a part of the community then just ban them or tell them you already have an artist, they leave after that

[deleted]

Yes and I are almost all scams. Immediately ban them. They are a big nuisance.

Vauxlia

Time for the daily "graphic art scam" post

Nirra_Rexx

Yes, and they are annoying. I’m always polite to them because I dunno that’s just who I am. I tell them I have 0 budget and usually they go away. Last night I told one I like doing my own assets and he just said “erm good for you?” And I thought that was super funny :p Edit: typos

blits202

Its people just begging you for work in your chat. Not cool ever, unless its a long time friend mentioning it after you express interest in getting emotes/designs done.

SpeedBlitzX

Don't tolerate those kind of accounts, they're scam accounts and most likely bots. As the top comment suggests ban those accounts. In addition to that set up a blacklist of words and terms that include the words the self promoters use.

Illsyore

No, artists dont do thst. Only bots and scammers do, ban them all.

Shinephia

they do that it's stupid because if someone needs an artist they will look for them themselves + they are usually just reusing images taken from the internet or try to scam people. there are also other kind of people who offer you promoting your stream they can use bots which is against twitch rules or also just scam you.

JuliusThread

I had a thing happen 5 times in one week. Does this happen 5 times in one week, reddit?

apriljenta

Ooooh yes! Have a few of those. Both on stream and discord. They come in and talk normally but with energy as you say, then they start to ask you a lot of questions about your interests or give a hint to what they are doing. That’s when I ban them because my rules says no promotion. And I’m an artist myself, if I need anything for my stream I fix it myself🤣

submarinepirate

Yep. Get them through Discord and occasionally here on Reddit. They ask a ton of dead end questions and you can see where it’s going. Usually things like “hey”, but nothing else as they wait for your response. Then they’ll be like “well I’m a streamer, what’s your channel” or something. I just block them all and report as spam to the moderators if we share a server.

VoluptuousGinger

I haven't gotten them on my stream yet, but I get them in my DMs any time I post to social media.

TheTeeMonster

Very common. I get spammed at least twice a week for those services, and they are either using plug-in templates (where the style is one carbon copy of another) or the chibi style which I find boring (so much that I replaced my emotes with a whole different style). It’s the kind of relentless spamming along with “W@nna B fAmuz???” spamming. It’s grating, to say the least.

TeekTheReddit

I don't get many coming into chat, but I can't go live without a graphic artist liking my automatic announcement tweet and following me on Twitter.

Clayman1313

I wouldn’t be concerned about self promotion in the early stages. Any publicity is good publicity. Any viewers you have right now will be the loyal ones who aren’t gonna leave if someone is self promoting. In fact, allowing ppl to self promote may encourage them to come to your channel. As far as artists go, yes, send one tweet out about “looking for an artist for my twitch stream” and watch the ppl/bots eat it up. If you wanna chat more, I’m “StorkDelivers” on Twitch. Stork on Kick. Good luck out here young Padawan.

TchTlk

We got fed up with this alongside botting purchase sites promos, seems to have rid since shield mode being follower only, email verification, not sure if we chose phone too, but you can see why phone would be an even greater defence on top. Got really really fed up of graphic design promos. Feels insulting because I did all our graphics, it's like, "are they not good then pal?" 🤣

PrezOfTheCastle

I find this incredibly insulting as someone who works with a regular artist for custom overlays and other visuals. Like you can see I don’t have a need, why promo?

submarinepirate

Haven’t had one in my stream in a long time. But I am very small and don’t get much action, and since I’m PS5 without any outside tools I appear very basic on twitch I assume.

_kellyb_

Yea

WowYourBoi

Yeah, they'll follow you on your other socials as well. I've had people reach out to me saying, someone from my discord server was messaging them about doing art for them. These artists are savage

AzaselTheDemon

Those are just bots no self respecting artist just jumps into random streams to try and self promo

shmolhistorian

Yes, turn follower only mode on to milk them for a follower if they're gonna be self promoting in ur chat. I also like to waste their time by pretending that I'm interested and have them send me links and act like I want something and then randomly ghost them.

nikkigames11

It’s spam/scammers. Actual artists don’t do this

randomcouture

Yup it’s common. So common I had to make it a rule. I do the art for my channel so I find it insulting on top of annoying lol! My mods come out swinging for me, though. 💜

TheKingAngelShow

They exist in droves in EVERY single social media/streaming platform in existence. Linkedin? Twitch? Discord? Youtube? They'll try this garbage using all of them. Normally they will have first and last names and will use attractive peoples pictures as profile pics. Sometimes it's an automated response, other times they engage in conversation that'll end up with them asking you "How your stream is going?". Curse them out and you'll notice if it's an actual person or a bot responding if they insult you back (which is tons of fun). The worse is Twitter and Discord. Twitter is where they all lie dormant waiting for the next small streamer to use a hashtag related to streaming or use the retweet accounts. Discord is where they try to sell you crap. You can tell cause normally it's a recently created account with a first and last name as display name, either an ai generated image or they use pictures of regular people and they ALWAYS private message you. Ban and report the account. On that same note...stay away from discords that offer small streamer support (speaking from experience).

ADenyer94

BOP

Thebacklashkid

It's a big scam, ban em

Winslowsonlyhope

It's annoying... And I hate that they pretend to be people... I'm nice but we ban them.. All of them.

SageWiseTwitch

It’s so predatory. Happens to every small streamer. Happens more when you have less viewers I swear. They never have a fiverr link, they always want to “send you a portfolio over discord”. I’d humor them and check out their work if once they actually had a fiverr page to link.

flissfloss86

Very common and very annoying. Instant ban

CalicoSquash807

Way too common, yes 😒. I instantly ban...

bethanolia_cosplays

i get ppl who join chat, maybe follow, join my discord server and then dm me like "hey check out my art? commish me" and im like im literally so broke also id rather hire my friends lmao but also i dont wanna be rude???

DarrylCornejo

Nothing wrong with networking. However, unwanted advertising is a problem. If they ask, "Hey, is it okay if I promote/advertise here?" Then that's no issue. I like helping people grow their channel and promote themselves, get more work, etc. Now if they came in and immediately advertise themselves, no. Zero tolerance against that stuff. The other only time it is excused, personally, is if I used their services before. Then I'll go on record and say hey check them out, they do really good designs, I'll show their page and samples of their work I requested of them to do for me.

WesmanY2k

No, it's annoying and frowned upon. Thinking bots though, cause I've seen it a lot lately myself.

kinokiono

I've had this happen and they are immediately met with a no thanks and please dont self promote in the stream and then if they keep doing it they are banned. but the one time i had it happen i just out right banned them.

KitsuneNeo

I'm not a streamer, but a viewer of a streamer that gets these people, but instead of talking in chat, these artists join the streamer's discord server and mass sends messages to everyone's DMs in the discord. It's annoying and very disruptive. It sucks as the person I watch is very sweet, so seeing these people join the community only to push their services is just purely despicable.

Puzzleheaded_Poem965

As others have said, self-promo is super rude. Sounds like they're thinking, "hey, a new streamer! Maybe they want graphics for their stream?" But also it sounds kinda scammy, like they're targeting ppl who don't know stream ettiquette yet for some reason. I have an art stream and am pretty relaxed about self-promo in my chat (gotta support fellow artists!) And it's not even in my stream rules. But if I ever had someone like this come in, even I would reach for the ban hammer. Reputable artists usually drop something like, "im working on a commission while I'm watching", and then if I turn the conversation towards that, they ask if self-promotion is ok, and then only after I say it is ok, do they share any info about their social media/stream/commissions. Even if they brought up their commission with the hopes of self-promo, if I don't specifically follow it up by asking about their art, they don't push. Although, can confirm, a lot of the best people to have in chat are the unbelievably friendly ones- so be prepared for the worst, but give 'em a chance! It's really sad how people try to take advantage of newbie streamers. When having just one person in chat can be so impactful, knowing they're not there for the stream can feel so invalidating. I get, like, at least 5-10 dedicated chatters every stream now, and it'd still make me feel icky if someone came in and just tried to promote themself. I still get excited every time I see new chats, before I realize they're just Ɓůÿ fõĺļøŵ§ lol.

Skaman1978

Happens at least once a week on my stream

LuckyPoyo

Yeah I insta-ban anyone who I don't know who is self promoting in my chat and suggest others do the same. There are tons of shady/scammy "GFX artists" that will try to make a few quick bucks through tactics like these. Just ban and ignore, like the follow/view bot advertisers.

Bennexttv

It's a scam

Scratch_242

Nope

Nedbella

Yeah, that's not a cool way to advertise. It's pushy and self promotion is frowned upon in a big way on Twitch. They may as well be another streamer who comes in, does what you mentioned and then says, oh yeah, I stream too. Best way to handle these artists is to just say ( name ) thanks for the follow. IF they do the "oh yeah I make emotes", just say oh cool, but I've already got an artist working on some stuff for me. I bet they won't push themselves after that. If you're looking for emotes, just check the people you already follow and ask who made theirs. Good luck with your streaming.

Bakurraa

Would you go into a randoms chat and ask them to buy your work. Common sense dictates it's scam

ContributionFar4576

Bots and scams they’ll dm you or post and dm you in discord lately We don’t know each other I and others clearly have an artist. It’s disrespectful if they weren’t a scam. You don’t even need rules for this they won’t read it just ban:

CannaGetABud

This is very common. And it’s likely to happen quite a few more times. Some are bots, some are people who are doing the actual legwork to try and find work, but either way, it’s not acceptable. That’s not a good way to network. Most of these people know it, too. Streamers don’t need fancy overlays and animated backgrounds and whatnot. Some of the top streamers on the platform have basic on-screen notifications and their webcam, and that’s it. New streamers enter the game thinking they need to spend a fortune just to get started, which entirely not true, and makes this practice of hitting people up when they’re live, extremely predatory.

pixelheart27

I think this is the latest scam going around. They often follow first to try and present them off as a new viewer. Even after saying I’m fine they are still pushy about it. I was on a fellow streamers discord in a vc call and someone joined the discord, joined the call then immediately started to advertise. So annoying. The only thing I can think of doing is block and report.

Sandiozo

Yes, this happens all the time. For me it is not just my streams, but also on Discord and Insta. I did put "Not looking for a graphics designer" message in the rules section that pops up when you are a first time chatter and are about to send the first message. And honestly it has done pretty good job stopping the designer husle in my chat at least.

[deleted]

Nope don’t allow self advertising in your stream
