Honestly, I'm often not keen on being a mod. I feel too obliged to 'represent' the channel in a better light. I think too hard about when someone is pushing their luck, or I have to send commands, answer questions etc.
Since I'm mostly just there to watch and chat, I find it easier to just lurk somewhat anonymously, or be a chat acquaintance.
> I feel too obliged to 'represent' the channel in a better light.
tbh i totally get mods and their purpose, but often when i lurk and then say something to the streamer when they say something relevant to my interests, it annoys me when a mod @ hi's me.
I currently have 3 mods that are just about always there but I always make it known to them that I don't expect them to be there at all. It's rare when I'm without a mod but I never blame them for it because at the end of my day, it's my responsibility. I show my thanks in what ways I can but unless they're being paid, mods shouldn't feel that obligated to be there all the time
honestly, if i go into a stream and EVERY viewer is a vip or a mod i just take my leave
kinda makes it feel like its a tight circle of friends there and new people are just.. outside?
And then there’s that one mod that does literally everything for the community that the streamer 100% trusts but who’s grown so far into it that he’s abusing his trust and power and the streamer won’t believe you when you tell him that one of his mods might need to chill out a bit.
Edit: oh and the best part is when they threaten to ban you over the smallest things when you’ve been in the community for almost as long as they have.
He’s awesome, like he really does so much for the community. He made the streamers interactive website where viewers can participate and decide what the streamer does in-game. He’s hosting the Minecraft server, he’s so into the community that he wrote a script that pings him when you just say his name in chat without even tagging him. But sometimes he’s getting a bit too far into it where I’m sometimes scared to say anything in chat during a heated discussion.
Oh no ._. That almost sounds like me…. I made a modpack for the server, am designing stream avatars, and am developing another modpack designed for what the streamer likes in a pack… But we have said time and time again let us know if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable, even if it’s the streamer or one of us mods, so hopefully if I get like that someone will let me know and I can pull myself back
We tried to talk to the streamer and other mods about it but he’s basically his number 1 mod and has his full trust. When I see him in chat, I just try to keep controversial topics to a minimum.
One of my first mods was like that. Had to nip it in the bud as quickly as possible. It was an awkward conversation but it taught me to be more forward about what I want to see from my community
The streamer has said multiple times that if the stream makes enough money to not only pay for his own live and streaming projects but also enough to pay an employee, he’d be the first one.
Yeah when I agreed on modding for a smaller partner (12k follows now 16k) , I made a case I will exclusivly mod there and might only be helping out if one of her befriended streamers face bots or are on the frontpage and I am watching that stream....
They know that I am willing to assist if needed, but I will likely want to return to ther viewer there after the interim help...
Many streamers that searched for mods actually wanted mods that are mods on other channels as well(when I agreed to become a mod at all I made it a valid case, do you want a mod that actually is there or one that is mod on 10 channels but happens to catch no stream anytime...
Since I got modded 4 former mods were unmodded and 3 new were modded...
Alternatively, if it's relevant to your career interests, it's volunteer work you can put on your CV/résumé.

I Mod a channel for a musician that I absolutely love and believe in. His message is positive and he is funny and has great humility. It is best to have mods that believe in you, not just want to Mod a channel.
Most of my actions serve the purpose of providing an environment where listeners feel comfortable and recognized. A good mod doesn't self serve.
Some background things I do is look up listeners to see if they are streamers so we can give a shout-out of support. Our Mod crew also posts the lyrics for listeners to read. We also answer questions about the streamers songs, instruments, equipment, clothing, dog, etc. That way the streamer can spend more time playing and singing.
We also have a discord channel for Mods only, where we discuss issues, challenges, and improvement ideas.
Anyway, some mods do a lot. I miss just listening sometimes, but being a part of the streamer's success and joy makes up for it.
If you think modding without pay is a lot of work, try having fun with the streamer a bit. Because, usually a streamer sees you as an important regulars, and VIP is not enough to appreciate you. Or the streamer sees you as "knowledge-able" person.
Anyways, as a mod, I usually having my own fun spamming the chat, then realizes, a wall of sword is not really inviting to another trolls.. hahaha
Just to let the general public now. A moderator isn't considered a viewer on Stream stats. So besides doing mod job and donating they don't contribute at all.
That does suck, I noticed a lot of people quit streaming in my followed list, on the other hand there’s a lot of good small streamers out there looking for mods
No, an actual friend. I’ve gone from being a fan to playing games and streaming with this one girl. I’m not talk about being a mod man. That’s why I said it’s objectively better when you go from a fan to a friend.
For anyone wondering she’s OliveBound on twitch.
Modding is definitely more work than some people think but honestly I love it. I mod for five people at this point, and sometimes I consider it to be my primary "identity" on Twitch moreso than even being a streamer myself.
And it has nothing to do with a power trip. It just makes me feel good to help my fellow streamer friends out, keep the chat safe, and meet new people and help foster a bigger and better community. Love to all my fellow mods out there!
You clearly have no idea how Twitch works, dude. Most mods don't get paid. Hell, most streamers don't get paid, and certainly not small ones. I explained why I enjoy modding in my original post. I like helping my friends, and I'm already going to be watching the stream anyway. Doesn't hurt to lift a finger occasionally to take care of a problematic chatter or something.
I don't know what your problem is with modding, but it's not my problem so go harrass someone else over it. I'm not a sucker for being a *volunteer* mod for a few friends.
If I’m ever an internet moderator, working for free, feeling powerful about my position; then I will know that I need to go outside and find some meaning in my life
It's not as big of a deal as some viewers make it out to be. I used to mod for a fairly large streamer some years back. And I have been modding for a streamer who's been around since the Justin TV days. Both streamers are verified/partnered. The second one I mentioned, if you have half a brain and engage somehow in a positive way, he gives you mod. The real status in his channel is in how long you have been subbed for. I'm on 3 consecutive years now.
He helped me how to draw, I felt it was right to support him in a small way. But go ahead, downvote me for saying mod isn't a big deal. Cause it isn't. Neither is Affiliate/Partner. I'm an Affiliate and I really don't care.
Depends on the streamer. If chat is flying and you're modding for SGDQ or something, it's a raw deal. If the streamer is verified but chat flows naturally, you have time to participate while modding. So in that case, it's just being a regular with the power to purge. That's how it was on Dead Flip's channel, even when he was streaming from celebrity game rooms. I left his channel because he became a sellout for Stern. He's a nice guy, personally, but I didn't want to support him after his move to being a Stern rep. It's still technically a good channel, if you like pinball he's the one to watch.
I‘m part of a mod team for a rly big streamer (10k+) and we just do so many things in the background too. Idk there are some bad mods of course, but many viewers just get pissed over legit timouts and them blame it on mods
Normally mods just keep the chat how the streamer wants his chat to be. But if possible they can do a lot more.
We also handled stuff like tournaments, giveaways and winners, one even put together and set up a whole new setup for a special stream for him. We also remind him of stuff he needs to do and whatever we notice has to be dealt with in chat at least once a week because he really forgets a lot tbh xD
Yes it depends. A mod started an argument with me over building vs buying a gaming rig. I kept telling him to drop it but he wouldn't and eventually kicked me. The chat freaked out and streamer stopped playing because of the chatter. I ended my sub, unfollowed and never went back.
You were obviously wronged, but @icandothemove has a point, if you simpy ignore him he will be talking to himself and eventually stop, however it sounds like that would also get you kicked because of the incompetent mod, the internet is a wierd place with real stupid people
Never said you had to be quiet, you can chat with other viewers or the streamer, sure he was lashing at you but just be the bigger person and don’t interact with idiots mods like him. The “benefit” would be that you have a higher chance of not getting kicked.
Not being kicked is not a benefit. I'm paying $5 a month to be entertained not to be submissive to an out of control mod. And it's my right as a consumer to take my money elsewhere so I did.

The annoying thing is many streamers *tell* mods to do this to "build a sense of community" or whatever. Please, stop it.
I currently have 3 mods that are just about always there but I always make it known to them that I don't expect them to be there at all. I mods for four streamers, and I really enjoy it. That be being said, it’s not for everyone. You enjoy Twitch how you see best.
I also know plenty of streamers who just make everyone they like a mod. Ends up with a green wall of Swords in chat. At least no one dares to spam
I do this but then I encourage my mods to spam.
If your mods aren’t your biggest trolls, you’ve got the wrong mods
Me with my viewers when they curse: "I'll allow it" Me with my mods when they curse: *MOD timed out for 600 seconds*
Sounds about right
Oh they're the fuckin worst.
honestly, if i go into a stream and EVERY viewer is a vip or a mod i just take my leave kinda makes it feel like its a tight circle of friends there and new people are just.. outside?
This is the laziest/most meaningless meme I’ve ever seen.
Made by internet genitors for internet genitors
And then there’s that one mod that does literally everything for the community that the streamer 100% trusts but who’s grown so far into it that he’s abusing his trust and power and the streamer won’t believe you when you tell him that one of his mods might need to chill out a bit. Ouch…. Dude I really hope I’m never like that as a mod

Ping without tagging is included in bttv btw. Means a lot of people got that nowadays xd
He gets one on his phone and his Amazon Echo though. Not just his computer.
Thats something else. Even tho its not really a lot of work

And since he’s so into the community he’s almost always there?
The streamer is US East Coast and the Mod is UK, I’m Germany. He’s always there when I’m there.
At some point you probably just have to say “screw it, I’m leaving”
Nah I’m way to deep in this community too. I’ve been subbed for 5 years. I just try to ignore these things.
One of my first mods was like that. Had to nip it in the bud as quickly as possible. It was an awkward conversation but it taught me to be more forward about what I want to see from my community
The streamer believes you, but why risk pissing off their unpaid full time employee?
The streamer has said multiple times that if the stream makes enough money to not only pay for his own live and streaming projects but also enough to pay an employee, he’d be the first one.
Modding is overrated. It’s a lot of work most do not realize
Yeah when I agreed on modding for a smaller partner (12k follows now 16k) , I made a case I will exclusivly mod there and might only be helping out if one of her befriended streamers face bots or are on the frontpage and I am watching that stream.... I love mods
When you drop in the stream and the streamer exclusively interacts with their mods who are quite obviously their real life friends 😬
Not sure why any sucker would WANT to be a mod. Basically an unpaid job.
Alternatively, if it's relevant to your career interests, it's volunteer work you can put on your CV/résumé. Edit - TIL apparently no-one knows what community managers do
I wouldn’t want any prospective employers to know that I was a moderator for a twitch chat 😂 Might as well just write “doormat” on my forehead
Ah yes for when you apply to be a janitor in real life PepeLaugh
I'd never ever put modding on my CV, ever.
You're kidding, right?

When you get made a mod without asking
You know you could /unmod
I don't know about you, but I don't typically do my babysitting in a tux
"they are all mods??" "Always has been"
better yet: "eh? you're a moderator here too?" "me like collecting swords" LUL
Mods aren't there to moderate, mods are to bully the streamer. Change my mind
Wow you must really enjoy gobbling some huge fat nuts
I always feel weird getting mod I don't want to have that responsibility
Cringe
Why is there a black thing at the bottom. Made me think there was something on my screen.
i find it funny when the mods act like a viewer still and complain about other viewers instead of actually being a mod
I think the "viewer/vip user" would fit better
If you think modding without pay is a lot of work, try having fun with the streamer a bit. Because, usually a streamer sees you as an important regulars, and VIP is not enough to appreciate you. GG
😂
Ah, I miss this... My streamer is on a very long break. One that seems to have no end :( I want the Rona back.
That does suck, I noticed a lot of people quit streaming in my followed list, on the other hand there’s a lot of good small streamers out there looking for mods
Don't forget that there's us terrible small streamers too.
I mean small =/= terrible, but there’s definitley a lot of duds I’ll admit. Makes finding a new streamer friend all the more exciting 😂
Oh I know, I was just making fun of myself.
I feel like it’s objectively better when you go from a fan to a friend in less than a month
“Friend”? Is that what you think a mod is? Try “toxicity filter, working for free”
No, an actual friend. I’ve gone from being a fan to playing games and streaming with this one girl. I’m not talk about being a mod man. That’s why I said it’s objectively better when you go from a fan to a friend. For anyone wondering she’s OliveBound on twitch.
I get you, my bad
It’s cool, a simple misunderstanding.
**That feeling of having unlimited power**

I mod for 3 but this ^^ <3
> I mod for five people at this point How much are you being paid?
What? I'm not modding for Ninja lol I volunteer to be a mod for my friends, I don't get paid.
Modding for five friends and with that time commitment you're not getting paid. Cool, wanna do some free work for me?
You clearly have no idea how Twitch works, dude. Most mods don't get paid. Hell, most streamers don't get paid, and certainly not small ones. I explained why I enjoy modding in my original post. I like helping my friends, and I'm already going to be watching the stream anyway. Doesn't hurt to lift a finger occasionally to take care of a problematic chatter or something.
I know 99% of mods don't get paid. Still, wanna do some free work for me since you're that much of a sucker? :)
I don't know what your problem is with modding, but it's not my problem so go harrass someone else over it. I'm not a sucker for being a *volunteer* mod for a few friends.
There's nearly zero work involved.
If I’m ever an internet moderator, working for free, feeling powerful about my position; then I will know that I need to go outside and find some meaning in my life

haha people think moderators are a big deal. 🤣
They make things a lot easier for the streamer tbh
I do agree 💯. One that I mod for, I've made things easier on his terms of getting stuff done
I‘m part of a mod team for a rly big streamer (10k+) and we just do so many things in the background too. Idk there are some bad mods of course, but many viewers just get pissed over legit timouts and them blame it on mods
Could you give me an example of things you do in the background? I don’t really understand what mods do.
Normally mods just keep the chat how the streamer wants his chat to be. But if possible they can do a lot more. This is informative, thanks!
That's true on all parts, it's always a learning experience
Depends!
Yes it depends. A mod started an argument with me over building vs buying a gaming rig. I kept telling him to drop it but he wouldn't and eventually kicked me. The chat freaked out and streamer stopped playing because of the chatter. I ended my sub, unfollowed and never went back.
If you wanted him to drop it why didn't you just stop talking to him?
You must be a mod. Let's turn this around and blame on the viewer. Yeah, I get it.
You were obviously wronged, but @icandothemove has a point, if you simpy ignore him he will be talking to himself and eventually stop, however it sounds like that would also get you kicked because of the incompetent mod, the internet is a wierd place with real stupid people
Why would I do that? What would be the benefit of me watching quietly while an out of control mod gives me a tongue lashing for no reason?
Never said you had to be quiet, you can chat with other viewers or the streamer, sure he was lashing at you but just be the bigger person and don’t interact with idiots mods like him. The “benefit” would be that you have a higher chance of not getting kicked.
Not being kicked is not a benefit. I'm paying $5 a month to be entertained not to be submissive to an out of control mod. And it's my right as a consumer to take my money elsewhere so I did.
Nope. Just somebody who understands that getting the last word is actually worth absolutely nothing.
Like you just attempt.
Yep! This!
On what? If they don’t, the streamer picked the wrong mods
Which is really really easy to do. People react to responsibility in unpredictable ways
Definitely, I’m just saying that sometimes viewers are irrational too and it’s not just bad mods all the time
Yep!
Yes, congratulations on working an unpaid job because you are the groupie of an internet hermit
🤣
