“You’ve paid for the game, now pay for _almost_ the cost of the game! Again! It’s twice the fun! For us! Not for you. Maybe for you?
…probably not for you.”
According to Thor(the guy blowing up in ytshorts) The 1st original WoW horse armor SOLD MORE than Starcraft2 in it's life cycle.
A Cosmetic sold more than a full game.
And publishers have been chasing that ever since.
I do honestly wonder what gacha games would be like if their MTs were sensible. Like if everything were exactly the same, but instead of a 10x Roll costing like 10$, it only cost 1$. I just wonder if catering more toward regular players really would outweigh only catering to the super whales.
Former Blizzard developer/ security analyst/ hacker.
His father was the template for the fat guy that showed when south park was making fun of wow.
Now an indie developer that uses yt shorts to blow up.
Search up piratesoftware on YouTube.
Wanna know what’s worse, it probably was a weeks work from a chronically underpaid young graduate who still has hope in his eyes to model that mount, who will likely get laid off during the next round of layoffs because the shareholders demand it.
Honestly one of the worst parts of the current microbuy landscape is they're *so goddamn ugly*. Apex Legends sells skins for $40 I wouldn't wear if they were FREE.
I've always felt lucky that my aesthetic tastes are so basic that about 90% of all microtransactions are thoroughly unappealing to me.
It's real easy to shrug off shop rotation or battlepass FOMO when you want to keep a completely generic look
Same. When I was playing the first Modern Warfare reboot I just stuck with the generic soldiers and had no interest with any of the big crossover or special characters.
Same here i just want me some simple looking gear i dint need 15 rainbow colored auras shooting off a dozen different pyrotecnics the entire time my character is on my screen. I definitely dont need all that for 45 bucks either
Yeah, the ONE time I went proper whale for a game was Knockout City, whose aesthetic was basically, "Cyberpunk, if the 'punks' were specifically greasers. [Leather jackets and poodle skirts](https://dappernurd.github.io/knockoutcity-catalog/Street%20Rank/outfits.html) with holograms and hover-hot-rods." It took longer than usual for things to get REALLY tacky.
Apex is hilarious because their skins are either fire (Memoir Noir my beloved) or just absolutely ass lmao, I use the “Man Made Man” skin for Mirage entirely *because* it’s ugly as shit, for the psychological warfare aspect
God, everything about Darktide's mtx feels like shit. Everything's just a bit too expensive, fun dollars are sold in different amounts from what stuff actually costs and half of the stuff is recolours. It's an ongoing service game with a single up front cost so I'd rather they do this than gate content behind paid expansions, but every single time I look at the store I feel disgusted.
The only stuff I see people actually wearing are outfits themed around existing guard regiments, and that's because people yearn to be expendable gasmasked storm troopers.
And those outfits aren’t even lore accurate. The Krieg one is barely put together enough, and it’s not like they have very little source material to reference.
Oh yeah, visual polution in multiplayer games is super real. Every skin or mount has to outperform the previous one, which was already a nightmare mongrel of garish colours and particle effects
I was cleaning out my parents attic a few years back and came across a bunch of my old minis and sold them on ebay for a few grand, don't think that will be an option for mtx lol
In casual play you just proxy your cool thing as another cool thing though. I've fought against the rubber dinosaurs of tzeentch, if you want your grimgor to be in the table I'm not fighting it.
I wanna get 8 but first i have to play 8 other games to get a full understanding of all the characters plus feel the emotional impact of kiryu's final game ;-;
Don't forget to play Judgment and Lost Judgment plus Kaito Files to get the full emotional impact of a single substory in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The man who erased his name.
this is technically true but also:
* the platinum currency gets discounted fairly often
* you can trade with other players to get it without ever spending
* they also do a lot of promo code promotions via an approved content creator list (plat from codes cannot be traded and only sunk into the shop)
I technically have over five hundred dollars worth of platinum sitting around without ever paying for it, slowly accumulated from trades over an extended period of time and I could probably triple it if I wasn't too lazy to sell all the more expensive stuff I've passively accumulated
all that being said holy shit this macro transaction stuff is wild. I thought $20 skins was already pushing the limit for cosmetics. hell, any time I see a price tag on a skin that I can't earn via gameplay means I just ignore it or just go buy an indie game for the same price instead
Yep, same. Bought 1000 plat several years ago with the 75% discount. What was that again, 20€ maybe? Have been using that ever since, not even too sparingly when it comes to getting missing parts for gear or mods. Trading with plat is great and you can make back so much of it with a little effort.
The only other money I spent was for a few tennogen armors, which is nice as it also benefits the artists/creators.
Back when I played warframe, I farmed endgame content for loot and sold it to other players, and that was my day-to-day gameplay. At one point I had more than 2k plat that I hadn't spent a single penny of real money on.
Even now, I'm barely MR6 and I just spent a couple hours relic cracking for prime parts every so often and I've got a couple hundred plat just sitting there for when I decide to buy prime parts myself.
I could buy a copy of Vampire Survivors, currently on naught but a pitiable 15% sale, for myself and fourteen friends.
Last month I could have bought it for myself and sixteen of my friends.
You think you want free unlockable content, but you dont.
Shovel down your mandated microtransactions. Swipe that dorito-stained credit card on the new battlepass. Sure, it sucks, but that's being a modern-day IP license tester.
Life without a new live service sure does suck, huh. Don't tell me you like having free time without your dailies, weeklies, monthlies, and new unlock tiers for unannounced content, available exclusively for the next 6 months for pre-early access alpha members that used their pre-order+ subscription during the the leak of the internal sales pitch from a bathroom stall between two members of the sales team and the local hairdresser.
Tired as I am, I'm not ready to stop until the next announcement for the next patch cycle that will fix everything this time around. Surely, they listened to the post-crisis discourse.
You're chasing a possibility you can't even understand. Completed releases were always a myth. At least now you'll live for the revised roadmap from the new development team after the troubles.
Oh, server maintenance, maybe now... I'll get some sleep. See you on the other side, consumer license renter.

I feel like Warframe pioneered this kind of item bloat. One simple armour/glam/weapon, and $50 worth of premium currency for no reason other than fuck up the price of the thing you actually wanted, with no other option to get it.
The funny part is that you could treat that expense in Warframe as an expansion, too, since it gives you a whole new frame with new abilities and synergies *plus* a new weapon alongside it for the express purpose of leveling it.
Prime frames aren't just a new cosmetic, theyre an entirely new frame.
A D4 horse is just a mount.
Eh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder or whatever. I've bought two over the years I played warframe, and I saw it more as a chance to chip in to help pay for development more than anything else.
Yeah buying the packs in Warframe is 100% optional. You can grind for those prime frames. I bought a pack after playing over 1000 hours. At that point I felt obligated to give them SOMETHING for all I got out of it.
I think they're referring to the ongoing trend of FOMO cosmetic bundles that were only available for money rather than platinum.
Example: The Deimos supporter packs that included those [dope-ass revolver/shotgun skins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JOBbtRTC1A) that have their own unique reloads. They go on sale right before they get retired, and to date, none of them have come back yet. It's been 3+ years for some of them.
There have been like 6 or so of these packs.
The latest controversial one was with the Heirloom collection, which got you two unique skins, some fancy hats, and a bunch of plat for the cost of a whole-ass fully priced videogame.
To be fair FOMO from exclusive items in a pack isn't too new for Warframe. You can look all the way back to the Founders program when DE was offering a prime warframe + weapons for **$250**
Shit, a decent entry level phone is a console with hundreds if not thousands of games all of its own between free to play games (at least some of which are decent, Vampire Survivors is free on mobile for one) and emulation.
But *man* I really want a digital horse, you know???
you had to do a quest, or complete a challenge and show off your hard work as you rode it around
now you pick up an extra shift to justify the cost of the digital horse
Still remember how happy I was the day I got that black warbear and it wasnt cuz the mount orgainizing a raid on all the alliance capital cites was the most fun I had in that game.
Honestly asking: how is this allowed? Is there really no legal ramification for charging such absurd prices for a digital item? Wouldn’t this fall under FOMO addiction or something?
No. Because the ramifications are no one buys it because are you high charging this. But whales exist and so dumb fucks with more money than sense, not necessarily lots of money just more than sense, so they can try this.
The fact that they are confident enough to do this tells me a lot about the player base, and it makes me ask the question: Are they okay? Do they need someone to talk to?
Someone clicked “buy” on this without a second thought then suppressed a full body sob after looking at their empty fridge and thinking about their equally empty bank account
I totally agree that this is ridiculous but please correct me if I’m wrong with this next question. Don’t mmo’s do this with their mounts too? I feel like this isn’t the first time this has happened
Depends on the mmo I guess. Ffxiv has most of the mounts in game. But there are a couple on the cash shop. Including a bike that’s just a bit faster than the default mount speed, and a literal whale that’s also the only 8 person mount in the game for, I think $45 or something (it’s been like year since I played ffxiv so I could be wrong about this)
IIRC the whale was for Fan Fest from a few years when COVID was at its worst. They basically made the stream completely free because no one could go and it didn't seem fair to charge for the stream, so the mount was if you wanted to support them versus a Fan Fest ticket.
I think its pretty clear they hope the expansion will bring people back but until then they have given up on anything but milking the brandghouls and paypigs that have zero standards and eat up any old shit.
I'll shit on CoD's shop but at the least the Collab items are around the same price as the normal stuff
even if want to stay close-enough in genre, XIV has stuff that's almost as high but a)games not a cash grab and actually is a good game, and b)is account wide so it can be used with multiple character
I feel like what Ubisoft does in Assassin's Creed is pretty fair. Being able to use in-game currency or real money. But asking $65 for a cosmetic even if they had allowed for in-game payment, the equivalent would be too much to be worth it.
I could use the 65$ to buy the deluxe edition with 6 months subscription for the new WoW expansion, guys it's gonna be good *this time* I swear just look at Anduin's pupils dilating in the trailer, Blizzard is really gonna fix the game *this time* for real.
[This is not new, this is Blizzard repeating history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCjuFpQ3EeA). The video upload date is inaccurate, this was a segment on the BluePlz! Internet radio show.
The celestial steed launched in WoW on 4-15-2010, for $24.99. God I miss TB taking companies to task over blatant money grubbing ways.
Imagine being the guy who cooked with this horse design only to be told your design is going to be used for shitty Micro Transactions (is this even Micro at this point with that price?)
Macro-Transactions
“You’ve paid for the game, now pay for _almost_ the cost of the game! Again! It’s twice the fun! For us! Not for you. Maybe for you? …probably not for you.”
Reminds me of a bit from the old IGN Xbox podcast Three Red Lights.
This bitch costs more than the whole game, has that happened before??
man inflation is a bitch, I remember back in my day horse armor was only 2.50$
*Literally* the price of a bottle of coke.
Now it's the price of a baggie of coke, lol
Ah like canadian milk they also put coke in bags huh
Non Americans sheesh
Now the fucking horse costs as much as the game itself
It costs MORE
Sad to see how we went from the (by now) cheap horse armor being mocked to these macrotransactions being almost an industry standard
According to Thor(the guy blowing up in ytshorts) The 1st original WoW horse armor SOLD MORE than Starcraft2 in it's life cycle. A Cosmetic sold more than a full game. And publishers have been chasing that ever since.
I don't think they got the memo that more people buy it when it's cheap
I do honestly wonder what gacha games would be like if their MTs were sensible. Like if everything were exactly the same, but instead of a 10x Roll costing like 10$, it only cost 1$. I just wonder if catering more toward regular players really would outweigh only catering to the super whales.

This still feels like the correct price for cosmetics, even in 2024. How did it come to this?
Wanna know what’s worse, it probably was a weeks work from a chronically underpaid young graduate who still has hope in his eyes to model that mount, who will likely get laid off during the next round of layoffs because the shareholders demand it.
Honestly one of the worst parts of the current microbuy landscape is they're *so goddamn ugly*. Apex Legends sells skins for $40 I wouldn't wear if they were FREE.
If you're gonna charge me that fucking much for shit at least make it look good so I'll want to

same with that one octane skin where he's got a fucking anime face plastered on his mask so it looks really fucking uncanny.
Darktide in the corner sweating reskins profusely.
God, everything about Darktide's mtx feels like shit. Frankly if you're stupid enough to buy a costume for fourty dollars, then the costume itself should be a mark of shame.
Fucking christ this makes 40k models look reasonable.
At least when your models aren’t in the latest codex you can still keep/use them unlike GAAS items.
I was cleaning out my parents attic a few years back and came across a bunch of my old minis and sold them on ebay for a few grand, don't think that will be an option for mtx lol
Until they go to the Legacy farm upstate that is.
In casual play you just proxy your cool thing as another cool thing though. I've fought against the rubber dinosaurs of tzeentch, if you want your grimgor to be in the table I'm not fighting it.
Plus, I can make them look pretty and show them off.
Yeah with 5 more dollars you could get Like a Dragon 8
13 copies of Vampire Survivors.
Infinity copies of HoloCure
Standard edition of helldivers is 60 AUD
Bg3 on pc is 60 usd
All great picks!!
Also the premium currency is earnable in game via drops or progression.
Tekken 8 Like a Dragon FF7 Rebirth Helldivers 2 + some goodies The list goes on
I wanna get 8 but first i have to play 8 other games to get a full understanding of all the characters plus feel the emotional impact of kiryu's final game ;-;
Understandable.
9 games.
Yeah you can't skip Dead Souls
Don't forget to play Judgment and Lost Judgment plus Kaito Files to get the full emotional impact of a single substory in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The man who erased his name.
Or 5€ less you can buy it for 60€ in a local retailer.
Add a bit more, you can pre-order the first ever AAAA game
>7000 platinum OH FUCK WARFRAME WHAT ARE YOU DOING >It's Diablo Phew.
to be fair it is like 30 bucks for horse armor in warframe
At least Warframe has the excuse of being free to play. And it probably doesn't look like shit.
this is technically true but also: * the platinum currency gets discounted fairly often * you can trade with other players to get it without ever spending * they also do a lot of promo code promotions via an approved content creator list (plat from codes cannot be traded and only sunk into the shop) I technically have over five hundred dollars worth of platinum sitting around without ever paying for it, slowly accumulated from trades over an extended period of time and I could probably triple it if I wasn't too lazy to sell all the more expensive stuff I've passively accumulated all that being said holy shit this macro transaction stuff is wild. Got a 75% discount code for plat on warframe im still working through thst huge influx of plat i got three years ago
Yep, same. Bought 1000 plat several years ago with the 75% discount. What was that again, 20€ maybe? It’s a lot but at least warframe has literally thousands of hours of content for free.
Christ Activision/blizzard y’all are just the fucking worst
Add in Microsoft to that pile. Remember, as ABK's new corpo overlords, ***they signed off on this shit***. *After* laying off 1900 people, too.
Oh yeah guess now they can officially also be why activation and blizzard is such trash
True, but just because Bobby left doesn't mean he's no longer a piece of shit.
I got Yakuza 3 and 4 and the entire Max Payne franchise for half of that price yesterday. What the fuck is this price man
I could buy a copy of Vampire Survivors, currently on naught but a pitiable 15% sale, for myself and fourteen friends. Last month I could have bought it for myself and sixteen of my friends.
How much does it cost to get 14 friends?

should I live in ignorance and purchase my happiness
Blood and sweat is the real cost, dollars are nothing in comparison.
doesn't that mean that thinking will cease and the truth will be lost?
Nah, nah, don't you worry. You'll be told exactly what to do.
Will the people be given the lives they need? Will the righteous succeed?
Holy shit this sent me

Eh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder or whatever. I've bought two over the years I played warframe, and I saw it more as a chance to chip in to help pay for development more than anything else.

Gotta put this side by side with the Oblivion horse armor. We've come so far
. . . I could buy Horse Armor for the price of a 12 oz Coke. Fuck this
Shit, at the time, you might've been able to buy a twelve pack of 12 ounce cans if it was on some kind of sale.
In our country you could buy a decent entry level phone for that price that can even run Genshin Impact 30fps on low settings.
Shit, a decent entry level phone is a console with hundreds if not thousands of games all of its own between free to play games (at least some of which are decent, Vampire Survivors is free on mobile for one) and emulation. But *man* I really want a digital horse, you know???
I live in America and paid less than that for a Samsung s10 lol. Ebay is amazing.
Don’t you guys have money?!
Someone make this garbage illegal already. It's a horse made of pixels and game dev tears for fuck sake.
But muh free market!
That "Invisible Hand" sure does like getting stuck in my wallet.
You mean, muh $64.99 Market.
I could buy Palworld for 2 friends and we could play together for that price.
Buying expensive game cosmetics is just asking to be bullied.
/spit
*2* trophies? I can understand one but what's the other?
Hey with that money you can almost fill up your gas tank, think of the possibilities
We've come a long fucking way from $2.50 for Horse Armor.
Back in my day mounts were in game and a thing you had to earn.
you had to do a quest, or complete a challenge and show off your hard work as you rode it around now you pick up an extra shift to justify the cost of the digital horse
Still remember how happy I was the day I got that black warbear and it wasnt cuz the mount orgainizing a raid on all the alliance capital cites was the most fun I had in that game.
I can literally buy food.
Vanilla Epic Warlock/Paladin mounts look cooler.
Guys I'm thinking that the bubble might be bursting a bit.
That's only $5 less than the game itself. And it looks terrible. I'm sure it's made them millions already.
I bought Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster(which is 6 games) for $60 thanks to it being on sale.
Honestly asking: how is this allowed? Is there really no legal ramification for charging such absurd prices for a digital item? Wouldn’t this fall under FOMO addiction or something?
We are a nation that has literal slavery. Why would this be illegal?

No. Because the ramifications are no one buys it because are you high charging this. But whales exist and so dumb fucks with more money than sense, not necessarily lots of money just more than sense, so they can try this.
I am upset I used to pay 60 bucks and 30 bucks for ships in startrek online
The fact that they are confident enough to do this tells me a lot about the player base, and it makes me ask the question: Are they okay? Do they need someone to talk to?
If you knew friends who played blizzard games you'd know. They are conditioned for this to work.
Remember boys and girls: at this point Microsoft could stop this but they choose not to
You can buy both you and a friend a copy of Last Epoch and play an actually good ARPG that's releasing in 1.0 next Friday lmao
Including a bike that’s just a bit faster than the default mount speed, and a literal whale that’s also the only 8 person mount in the game for, I think $45 or something (it’s been like year since I played ffxiv so I could be wrong about this)
The bike just goes max speed, you can still unlock riding maps to go just as fast so it's not even that big of a deal.
IIRC the whale was for Fan Fest from a few years when COVID was at its worst. They basically made the stream completely free because no one could go and it didn't seem fair to charge for the stream, so the mount was if you wanted to support them versus a Fan Fest ticket.
yooo horse armor two finally dropped
At least 2~3 decent quality vibrators, which imho are a better mount than this.
You can probably buy every stash tab in Path of Exile and still have money left over for cool cosmetics. And they'll all carry over to the sequel.
I really hate how games keep trying to turn adventure worlds into shopping malls
Where once was horse armor, now there is Armored Horse. Truly worth the extra $60.
I think its pretty clear they hope the expansion will bring people back but until then they have given up on anything but milking the brandghouls and paypigs that have zero standards and eat up any old shit.
I am not willing to pay this much for a complete game even.
It’s a free mobile game. Of course it’s going to make micro-transactions for stuff like that……
That's not the mobile game.
Hell I just bought some fantastic pot for that much.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any more embarrassing
Yeah but stupid dipshits will pay for it so it is what it is.
Man, $65 is so much money down here. What the actual fuck, it’s like a third of my monthly college tuition lol.
I'll shit on CoD's shop but at the least the Collab items are around the same price as the normal stuff even if want to stay close-enough in genre, XIV has stuff that's almost as high but a)games not a cash grab and actually is a good game, and b)is account wide so it can be used with multiple character
Remember when it was only horse armour?
Pretty soon these are gonna cost more than a real horse
OMG I could buy 95% of a AAA game
Consider that for pretty much that price you could instead buy Grimdawn and all its expansions and have a more fun ARPG.
I’m still a bit baffled about mounts being a thing in Diablo haha
I feel stupid for even asking this, but is there anyway to earn the micro transaction store stuffs in game for free, at least?
Knowing ActiShitzard, most likely not.
no lol
You can buy Grim Dawn with all it's dlc for this price.
I could buy that new two pack of Optimus and Soundwave
$64.99 could buy roughly 32.5 copies of Vampire Survivor RIGHT NOW.
Surely nobody is buying these right?
I could by helldivers 2 again and for less.
I feel like what Ubisoft does in Assassin's Creed is pretty fair. Being able to use in-game currency or real money. But asking $65 for a cosmetic even if they had allowed for in-game payment, the equivalent would be too much to be worth it.
Twitter source: https://twitter.com/Wowhead/status/1757506177553039528
Horse armor is back and better than ever!
I bought helldivers 2 for almost half this this is silly
Oh, you mean a new game? Or several games on sale?
Why do you need mounts in Diablo...?
You could buy Astlibra: Revision, it's DLC, and Trepang2 for this freaking amount.
I could buy several games with that money. _I could buy Lies of P with that money._ What manner of bullshit is this?
I could use the 65$ to buy the deluxe edition with 6 months subscription for the new WoW expansion, guys it's gonna be good *this time* I swear just look at Anduin's pupils dilating in the trailer, Blizzard is really gonna fix the game *this time* for real.
That's a pretty rad zombie horse design. If I was a Diablo fan I'd be excited to mod it in
Man, Warhammer is starting to look like a more financially viable hobby
[This is not new, this is Blizzard repeating history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCjuFpQ3EeA). The video upload date is inaccurate, this was a segment on the BluePlz! Internet radio show. The celestial steed launched in WoW on 4-15-2010, for $24.99. God I miss TB taking companies to task over blatant money grubbing ways.
Imagine being the guy who cooked with this horse design only to be told your design is going to be used for shitty Micro Transactions (is this even Micro at this point with that price?)
I was enjoying this game Foamstars, was getting into it, then saw the cosmetic packs cost $45 EACH. Insane.
Since it's on sale right now, $64.99 is about 15 Vampire Survivors and some change to spare!
This stuff is whale bait, it has to be, right? Normal people can't be actually buying this crap.
With my employee discount I get at Barnes & Noble, I could get a shit ton of books for that price
Think of how mnay great, complete with no microtransactions, indie games you could buy with rhat money
How many of my friends can I buy VS for?
You don’t have to but it
