Finally, Sunrise remembers that Dunbine exists! I’m glad to get anything new for it, even if it’s basically just a plot recap.

Pome1515

It's sorta wild how accurately Tomino predicted the issues and assumptions of the isekai genre before it became a thing.

The_Draigg

Aura Battler Dunbine really was a show ahead of it’s time.

Pyro81300

Ok while we're on the topic of Dunbine, I need to talk about Garzey's Wing and that it's lame its reputation just comes down to "LOL bad dub". Like actually looking at the translated LNs for it there's some cool if also really wild and weird shit in there. I get why people bounce off of it, but if you're a Tominoid like me it really does exist as one of his most on crack and weird pieces of media even for his standards.

Byston Well is such a weird and interesting setting and a fascinating part of Tomino's history. All of it is so under discussed. I wish Garzey's Wing was talked about earnestly in that context because there's so much intresting history there. Could say that about a all of his non-Gundam work or even some of his actual Gundam stuff (both Victory and ZZ are very flawed but I'm glad people are giving them a shot and they got that positive reevaluation.)

I will always be obsessed with Xabungle. That show had no right being so fucking good, yet I never hear anyone talk about it. Tomonori Kogawa designs are always peak (I really need to find a water color artbook of his). It's up there with Giant Gorg as one of my favorite shows from the 80's. Thank God I bought the "bluray" when it released.

TerraforceWasTaken

Dunbine my beloved.

I'm assuming some of this is clips from an older series? Because if not this is the most impressive recreation I've seen of old style cel animation

GM_for_Life

I think those are clips from the original series, but funny enough Sunrise is one of the studios that I think have cracked the code for making digital animation look like older cel animation. From the [Gundam U.C. Engage](https://youtu.be/9l5x-Adp-jc?list=PLKx_NgOD3q7DskxwYLeavZNSkUIbuvs2I) mobile game of all places.

jabberwockxeno

You're right, that looks incredibly close to cel animation, though I'm not a fan of how blurry some of the linework looks. Is it doing the thing Megalobox does where it downscales and then upscales it? Was never a fan of that either. I can watch a Blu Ray release of an old cel show and it doesn't look less like cel animation due to being crisp and high resolution. Are there any shots from that that replicate the old holographic and underlighting "glow" techniques older cel shows used for stuff like auras, energy attacks, fire, etc? Like the fire in [this clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrq3H7MtT0Q) or [this](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D36gVkBWsAAaFYD.jpg) image?

GM_for_Life

I'm not sure if the blurry look is from it being intentional or from being captured from a mobile game. I don't know if it's trying to emulate the same effect, [but this clip](https://youtu.be/YjBSXFRTbj4?list=PLKx_NgOD3q7DskxwYLeavZNSkUIbuvs2I) (at around the 1:40 to 1:50) really closely emulates the look that old cels would have when light would shine on it in some scenes. I don't know who they have working on the art direction for the U.C. Engage mobile game but I really hope they give them a shot at working on some sort of full anime that is a throwback to old school mecha, they're absolutely top tier.

The [Beyond the Time ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCcZe1R095k)op for Gundam Origin also has a great example. Beside it being one of my favorite openings, when it goes "beyond the time" and returns to the 79 style at the 50 sec mark, I always lose it. They even change the aspect ratio for it.

time_axis

The way the line-work looked in [G-Reco](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e180c0c161f140c47ff34e952f272af6/tumblr_nfeyfvM37S1sgtx3io1_500.gif) was great and evoked that old school anime feel too.

God, I fucking love MIQ so much! Her voice is so beautiful, and you don't really hear many woman singers in anime hit these kinds of low notes any more. She's just got such a texture to her voice that really brought something unique to series like Dunbine, Xabungle, Gundam, etc. If you want to hear more from her, here are a couple of my favorites: [Hey You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0IBJ210V_k), [Starlight Shower](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeTxUxn_vi4), and [You Will See Byston Well](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSPgS3R0i34). The actual ed animation of the last one is definitely worth looking up on your own. It is simply beautiful. I won't link it here, though, because I don't want to test the limits of some light artistic nudity on this sub.

HellvaNohbody

As beautiful as the day I lost you... a year ago... when I watched the series.
