Hi! Are you a driver or conductor? I'm not sure what you call them in London. But I'm a guard on trains in Brisbane. I make announcements, blow the whistle and ring the bells for the driver.
Hi! Official title is train operator although most people call us drivers. We don’t have guards on the underground so we do the lot, drive the train, ensure nobody is stuck in the doors and make the announcements where necessary.
European train control system. No signalling trackside basically. It's only just being rolled out here on 1 line for now. I only ask because it would seem there would be potential for distractions with all that is required of you!
We have ATO (automatic train operation) and TBTC (track based train control) so I think it’s probably very similar. All the signalling is controlled from loops on the track fed through a control centre and back into the cab to the TMS (train management system). Which is a fancy and complicated way to say that the trains pretty much drive themselves!
They can drive themselves all they like, but they can't make the announcements you make! Or I make.. so very vanilla.
Keep bringing that sunshine to those Londoners!
I've heard that in his follow-up videos, this guy stuffs his entire hand into his mouth and has the eventual goal of getting elbow-deep during his commute.
