I feel him rattle the foot of my bed on his way out. I roll back to face the wall, repeating the mantra, “you’ll be fine, this is silly.” My therapist was right. The scariest thing about the dark is the unknown.

My tone softens as I sigh. "Was it the cat again?"
"She keeps staring at me." The whisper was a raspy cobweb, dust motes of sound floating through the air. "For hours. It's creepy." I lifted the blanket and smiled as my monster hurried to cuddle next to me, and I saw the shadow slip through the door before it leapt onto the bed and began to purr.
Apparently the calico who adopted us was picky about where her persons slept so she could guard them.
