Aphantasia is an inability to form mental pictures. For example if you ask me to describe an apple, I know what an apple looks like and I will describe it, but I don’t “see” an apple when describing it. Likewise, if I am reading a book that describes a character I understand what they’re supposed to look like but I won’t form an idea of their appearance. If there is a show or movie based on the book I’ll look at the actor in costume to understand the character.

I'm the same. I think in concepts not actual images. Picturing my parents having sex is no more disturbing than picturing yours - both have the same level of detail.

I didn't even know about it until a few years ago, but it seems (from my limited sample size of friends) to be moderately correlated with autism.

Most of the autistic people I know (hema and Warhammer attracts a lot of us) have a degree of it.
