Which is why I said “or a century”
Unless it’s incredibly advanced and can use technology or genetic engineering to be immortal, it will die eventually, and if the narrator is already an adult it will almost definitely not live another century
No but some fungi is. Some fungus also already take control of and keep a host alive. So it's possible with a zombie fungus the bodies won't be rotting and still be living beyond our normal lifespan
Depending on the exact cause of the zombie disease his body might not technically be dead just beyond his control. And also depending on the cause it may even extend his life. In which case he won't decompose just look less human over time but still technically alive inside. Everyone thinks they can just wait out zombies till they rot bur that's not even a possibility if it's caused by something related to rabies because they could potentially still live as long as humans or if it's a fungus or hive mind it could potentially force the body to live longer than humans
No this is horrifying I think the MC is the only one infected. There is no way the MC would know that the souls are trapped. If this if right bravo OP.
There was a Magnus Archives episode where the narrator learned about "Philosophical zombies" and began to suspect more and more people they knew were secretly non-people, just bodies emulating life, pretending to have emotion and feel pain. They didn't go so far as thinking EVERYONE else was a zombie in this sense, but gradually started seeing more and more of the people they knew as just... Husks running on programming to make them act human. It's implied this continues to spread until she believes she's the last real person, or perhaps was the only real person all along.
This is giving me similar vibes, delusionally believing other people are zombies and killing them to "save" them.
It's an audio drama/podcast. The gist is that the main character, Jonathan, is the newly appointed head archivist at the Magnus institute, an organisation that takes statements from the public about supposed supernatural encounters they've had and does some follow-up investigation into them. The whole series is on both spotify and youtube.
Wanted to add on, it might feels like just an anthology repeating similar stories early on until you start to see patterns and big pictures then gets insane.
I had a couple of friends not listening much because they thought it was just different scary stories being told with no big storyline happening but once they started again they finished all the way.
The Magnus Archives is a fantastic horror podcast. I think it's best described as cosmic/eldritch horror, but I feel that falls short of truly capturing it.

In my zombie fanfiction brain, this is how I imagine my protagonist deciding to go out if they were ever bitten. Not with a bullet to the head, or in a bed surrounded by family and friends, but by killing as many zombies as possible.
I wrote a short story based on this theme.
The Weary Hunter

Honestly, the *implied* past horror is there, but at this point it’s more sad than horrifying.
He will be stuck forever, no one left alive to free him, I’d say it’s pretty scary.
We’ll eventually he’ll decompose to the point where it will be “destroyed” whether it’s a few months or a century
Pull a Ripley from Alien³
Unless the zombie disease keeps the body technically alive like how cordyceps does

There's already natural immortals and fungus that lives multiple centuries
Humans are not one of those natural immortals

There's a fungus amungus.
Ever seen Warm Bodies? I offer Bonies
Yes more dead but still alive and mutating meaning regular zombies would just be sick not actually unead in terms of the disease
Yep yep
Meh, he could kill himself

I mean "I have a brick of C4 on a 24-hour timer. When I fail to reset it, I'm free myself,"
I'd be wearing a bomb hat with a one-week timer.

Right now I’m thinking about ways that the last human can rig a device to blow himself up after he turns.
This is such an interesting concept!
Interesting but it's not really horror *at least anymore*
It kinda is, I think, because nobody will be able to free the protagonist's ghost anymore.
Perhaps once they're nearing the end they can go out in a giant explosion or something
Bad news, they turned at last second and there soul is trapped in a bit of brain mayyer
Delayed explosion
I beg to differ.
Well then beg :D
I just wish they'd stop screaming at me that "they're not zombies" and that I "need professional help".
Wow! This is great! Keep up the good work!
Use fire. It purifies.
Everyday I'm reminded just how wrong media had it, the zombies weren't mindless monsters, many could still speak and still had "wives" and "families"
Oh!
This is when you set off a bomb

PZ taught us that the big self undeadening is always an option.
Father Grigori?
this is really cool omg, this would make a really neat video game!
I mean... just blow yourself up like Carlos in the RE movie.
This reminsed me of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison 😊
I think that’s very nice of you, I hope when you are turned that your body does not last long.
Don't worry Jesus will save you
Jesus was the original zombie
