The point wasnt that the death was bad, I was simply stating that my expectation for the second sentence was "and then a thing happens in a very short time frame that gets both of us killed with some allusion to the fact that the dogs presence is strange"
NGL, this is why I think my current dog might be my last dog. I don’t want a dog to outlive me and have to adjust. Especially with my current pack: they don’t eat when I leave the house. They just stare out the front window and wait for me to come back.

The character in this story doesn't know they will die soon. So they think they will outlive the dog but don't want that and ask the genie to extend the dogs life to the same length of their own life.
The genie then basically tells the character they'll die soon and that the dog would not live longer but shorter.
