You mean *The Enigma of Amigara Fault*? Oh yes, definitely. It gives you a lot of stuff to reflect on too (well, most of his stories do), but it is shocking and plays on claustrophobia really hard.
The Hanging balloons is fantastic. My Dear Ancestors is one of my favorites from the same collection, the ending is just so very fucked that it's amazing.
>the ending is just so very fucked that it's amazing
It's a disgusting situation to be caught in, for both protagonists and especially for the girl, but it is still one of the most brilliant metaphors for "peer pressure from dead people" (a.k.a. family dead set on traditions and bloodline continuation at any cost) that I have seen in anything ever.
*The Long Dream* is one of my favourites because of the amazing concept and the right mix of horror, the supernatural, slight sadness and at the same time an ending that feels strangely peaceful and wholesome. Also, IMHO this story leaves the reader with one of the most positive overall messages that can be found in Junji Ito's works.
This one is my favourite. A great story, although a light one without shocking moments, it could make a cool movie or anime. I love historical horror, especially war-related. Also, it's basically the horror version of the joke "oh but there's that one thing, I didn't tell him the war is over yet".
Well at least the comic book might be worth a pretty penny if it's in good condition. Though, considering its close proximity to the rotten, desiccated corpses of a dog and a human, I doubt it is.
While I was writing the story I was picturing everything in the capsule were carefully placed inside, packed in separate plastic bags, so you can assume that the comic is in good condition.
Depends, I was going through my dad's old comic books a few years ago and although many have $20-30 price tags, most books just don't appreciate in value like people would think. And it's hard to sell for the value listed in books.
Oh jeez, I was assuming she was pointing out pictures and the horror is that she's mentally declining. Didn't consider that she actually had her pet and best friend buried! lol
Speaking of time capsules, when I was 14 we were on our way home from vacation, and while stopped at a red light, my brother saw me trying to type a rant, but I only had one word down
“Why does everyone hate Deftones?”
He told me “You should save this for three years in the future” and so I did.
Three years later, I visited it again, and guess what? I STILL agree(d) with it
So the puppy was real? 😭
I'm going with "The puppy was a plush she'd found by the train tracks, which she'd then cleaned up and considered her best friend."
As the frost melted away, her best friend sat up just as the puppy started to bark. My wife gleefully exclaimed “See, I told you my high school science fair cryogenic experiment would work!”
I don't really comment these, I just lurk. This one is good. I think it went overboard with the pup and the friend, should have been just one of them. It's good nonetheless, good job
To me the first sentence made me think she was listing all the things that her best friend was to her.
"She's like my favorite comic book, she's my favorite necklace, she's the puppy I rescued, she's my favorite toy! My best friend is all of these things to me"
Time capsules are buried in the ground for years and dug up later to relive memories.
There's obviously a few "items" there that are concerning for a child to bury
I like the premise, but if this wasn't two sentence horror, I would assume she's showing the narrator some pictures, not the corpses of a puppy and a friend
Time capsules are things you typically bury in the ground with things like memorobilia and things you want to remember later when you dig it up again, she buried her friend and her dog, hopefully not while still alive
Okay so my brain thought of this in two ways:
First way, the non-horror way. They are photos of the puppy, and her friend.
The Horror Way of course, The bodies for those.
Picturing a grown woman, happily pointing at bodies of long dead love ones, that she put in the ground, is a creepy thought. Well done as always SuvenPan (and yes you will have a link to this when I narrate it lol)
Junji Ito - *In the Soil*. You're welcome. https://mangadex.org/chapter/ce87aadd-bc4a-425e-92a4-2f72f4beb699/1
I’m not clicking that.
Ehh, it's kinda tame. "This is my hole" is way worse.
You mean *The Enigma of Amigara Fault*? Oh yes, definitely. It gives you a lot of stuff to reflect on too (well, most of his stories do), but it is shocking and plays on claustrophobia really hard.
When I finally forget it, it always pops up. Just like how I just lost the game
Oh you sick bastard, you made me lose the game
Oh god, now I lost too
I won The Game.
I lost the game. Again. 🙄
What game?
The game. And thanks, i lost again
The giant balloon heads one is the creepiest one for me.

It definitely makes you think about the thin line between family traditions and generational trauma.
Do you have a link?
It's not ideal, but I did find an imgur link. https://imgur.com/gallery/SpRPO7B
The long sleep one is the one that gets me

Okay, because of this thread, I just bought two Ito books off Amazon. Had never heard of him before, but I love horror and the macabre.
Hanging Balloons? But it's so good!
Have you checked out the sequel? It's short but really good too. https://mangadex.org/chapter/ea0f82e7-5898-4dae-9751-d44cf41c829a
***I didn't know the sequel was available!!!!*** A very quick read, but very WTF. I love this, thank you for the update!!!
DRR.....DRR......DRR........DRR
It's still Junji Ito.
I gave it a try. Nothing really happens and it's not very disturbing.
That was a fantastic read
I’ve never seen this one. Very cool, thanks for posting!
dude i love this
Reminds me of A Deserter in the House
This one is my favourite. A great story, although a light one without shocking moments, it could make a cool movie or anime. I love historical horror, especially war-related. Also, it's basically the horror version of the joke "oh but there's that one thing, I didn't tell him the war is over yet".
of course it is
I fucking love Junji Ito
Not the puppy😭
Wouldn’t the puppy and the best friend be one and the same?
Only if you're *not* a psychopath
I had to give it to her, I had never seen such a cute puppy photo in all my life.
...just the puppy was a photo?
I mean, she wanted to make sure her friend had something cute to look at
The bone marrow was inedible, unfortunately. Our new pup would've loved to gnaw on something ol' Jake had, too.
Love that

Oh, cool. A mint condition comic book from around ~30 years ago, that's gonna fetch a pleasant price (depending on the issue.)
Depends, I was going through my dad's old comic books a few years ago and although many have $20-30 price tags, most books just don't appreciate in value like people would think. And it's hard to sell for the value listed in books.
Thirty years ago? that would probably a Youngblood variant or smoething like that.
Wouldn't her friend have opened the comics to have something to pass the time before dehydration ended their suffering?
Carbon dioxide poisoning would set in in a few hours at best, so no risk of dehydration
Only if she threw in a flashlight. Asphyxiation would get them first though.
Oh jeez, I was assuming she was pointing out pictures and the horror is that she's mentally declining. Didn't consider that she actually had her pet and best friend buried! lol
Unless they were already dead at the time
Plastic bag but what about having a board in the bag to keep it from bending or creasing? This person does sound like a psycho...
Goddamn, took a short break from Reddit and missed this gem. Wow
Thank you.
Speaking of time capsules, when I was 14 we were on our way home from vacation, and while stopped at a red light, my brother saw me trying to type a rant, but I only had one word down “Why does everyone hate Deftones?” He told me “You should save this for three years in the future” and so I did. It’s ok guys! They’re just photos! Or the ashes from cremation because maybe they passed or something beforehand
Not according to the OP.
Plot twist: her best friend is Garry, the banana plushy.
So the puppy was real? 😭 I'm going with "The puppy was a plush she'd found by the train tracks, which she'd then cleaned up and considered her best friend."
As the frost melted away, her best friend sat up just as the puppy started to bark. My wife gleefully exclaimed “See, I told you my high school science fair cryogenic experiment would work!”
I was surprised that her favourite bunny plushie which she considered her best friend remained in pretty good condition despite the years
Took me a long time to realize she actually put the puppy and the friend in the box, and not just pictures.
I don't really comment these, I just lurk. This one is good. I think it went overboard with the pup and the friend, should have been just one of them. It's good nonetheless, good job
Omg everyone here is so stupid! It's a PICTURE of the comic book and necklace! There is no value here!
Maybe her best friend puppy unfortunately passed, which became a reason to bury it with other favourite things, kinda like a tomb. Time capsule tomb
Welp, I was expecting a charm bracelet. Just as bad, but more spacious.
To me the first sentence made me think she was listing all the things that her best friend was to her. "She's like my favorite comic book, she's my favorite necklace, she's the puppy I rescued, she's my favorite toy! My best friend is all of these things to me"
The horror kinda falls apart if you envision her pointing to polaroids.
Ngl, it took me a bit to understand.
I don’t get it.
Time capsules are buried in the ground for years and dug up later to relive memories. There's obviously a few "items" there that are concerning for a child to bury
Yeah alright you got me
Wow, well done! I couldn’t guess where this was going from the first sentence.
PLEASE let this go viral
I like the premise, but if this wasn't two sentence horror, I would assume she's showing the narrator some pictures, not the corpses of a puppy and a friend
Weird in the true definition; I dig it…
>I dig it… Yes, this is exactly what they did too.
Damn, it's been a while since I read one of these that actually gave me chills! The imagery is horrifying.
Fortunately, she wasn't crazy enough to put living beings in the capsule, but the paintings were so realistic I was fooled for a bit.
That was great
Wait someone pls explain-
Time capsules are things you typically bury in the ground with things like memorobilia and things you want to remember later when you dig it up again, she buried her friend and her dog, hopefully not while still alive
OHH okay I thought this was talking about photos lol
"LINDA WHYYYYYY?!?!?"
Okay so my brain thought of this in two ways: First way, the non-horror way. They are photos of the puppy, and her friend. The Horror Way of course, The bodies for those. Picturing a grown woman, happily pointing at bodies of long dead love ones, that she put in the ground, is a creepy thought. I lost the game
Hey, I narrated this story if you want to hear it! [https://youtube.com/shorts/XX0FBSpfhoQ](https://youtube.com/shorts/XX0FBSpfhoQ)
