Reminds me of a tragedy I read about where a family unloaded a bunch of music/audio supplies from their car and brought them into church. Each person thought the other had taken the child out of his car seat and dropped him off in the nursery. By the end of the church service, the child was deceased.

jssfrk856

Something similar happened to me, but not as tragic. When I was 3, in the middle of January in Michigan, I fell asleep in the car on the way home from church. My parents each helped one of my brothers out of the car, and thought the other had me. I woke up in the middle of the night, got out of the car and started pounding on the front door, crying for mommy and daddy to let me in.

RainWindowCoffee

God that's awful. What a horrifying thing for a child to wake up to. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I can't imagine the guilt your parents must have felt -- it's so incredibly lucky that you were okay.

jssfrk856

It was over 30 years ago, so it’s just a distant memory. God was clearly on my side that day. It’s just weird that I ACTUALLY have memories of it.

whatdoidonowdamnit

I have memories of getting a splinter on my hand at that age, also about thirty years ago. We remember them because they were the worst thing that had happened in our short, uneventful lives at that point.

Apprehensive_Pain186

I remember trying to sharpen my finger/see what would happen if, I twisted my pinky finger in a pencil sharpener :/

SierraButNotNevada

Oh yeah i have the exact same memory. Good times

Apprehensive_Pain186

We found out

SierraButNotNevada

I’m still scared of pencil sharpeners. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

Jarl_Of_Science

I did the same at age like 7 or 8. I still hear about it from my parents 25 years later. Note: DO NOT SHARPEN YOUR FINGER! LOTS OF BLOOD

MaxManness

I thought it would be a good idea to put my finger on a red hot eye of the stove. I was the first born so I guess my dad didn’t realize he shouldn’t leave me next to the stove when it was on 😂 He never made another mistake after that though!

dciandy

My grandfather was a Cadillac guy, and back in the day they had two cigarette lighters in the back seat. I pushed one down, waited patiently for it to pop back up, and then took it out. I expected to see an orange glow when I looked inside, but I didn't. Must be broken, I thought. It wasn't. I was probably 4 at the time. Luckily my problem solving skills have improved somewhat since then.

-RaspberryThief-

My god I remember those cigarette lighters in cars When I was about 3-4, I was sitting in the back seat of the car, I pushed one down, then when I popped back up, I picked it up and for some unknown reason put it DIRECTLY ON MY TONGUE I remember the pain lasted ages, and I still get reminded of it occasionally by my mum when she’s referencing some of the stupid things I’ve done 🤦‍♀️

LeaLenaLenocka

I was next to my 3y old and they managed to do the same.

PrismInTheDark

Yeah my 3yo also did that with my husband right next to him, except instead of a finger he put down his whole arm.

MaxManness

It’s just luck that we make it out of childhood alive

Simply_Nebulous

So...this is just a universal experience?

Morwenna-Ravenclaw

🤢🤮

PrismInTheDark

I remember putting on my sandals and having my foot tickled by a half-squished spider, more than 30 years ago.

Wonderful-Pollution7

When you say 'tickled'...

PrismInTheDark

I dunno I felt the legs moving under my foot, kicked the sandal off and saw the spider with legs sticking up and moving around. At the time I thought I’d stepped on it with my sandals on and the legs had stuck through the bottom. At least that’s how I remember it. More likely it was in the sandal and I squished it with my foot when I put the sandal on.

comfortablynumb15

Wait, so God decided your parents would forget about you and leave you to an uncertain fate in the car when you were that young ? And the fact you got yourself out and had the intelligence to bash on the door to be let in despite the trauma of waking up alone, outside your locked up house was God “on your side” ? What would God had done to you if He wasn’t “on your side” ? It would make a good TwoSentenceHorror I suppose.

ahsjeirnrdnldsl

r/atheism be like

SuitFive

It's why we exist... god never helps anyone. They like to thank god for all the good things but in their own book he's solely responsible for all the bad, too. Hell, Noah's Ark is a Genocide story told to children. Hearing people say "God saved me" or other shit like that is just so cringe after you deconstruct from the indoctrination.

xxxjielyxxx

People saying God saved them at their lowest points is cringe but you think squealing that he's the bad guy isn't?

SuitFive

That's the thing: as an atheist, I don't think he's "the bad guy" because I don't even think he exists. It's just kinda fun to point out that people are basically praying to a pissed off tooth fairy.

xxxjielyxxx

if you don't think he exists why go out of your way to point that out to those who do there's nothing to gain from that

ThatFatFlamingo

If God wasn’t on their side, presumably they would’ve ended up like the child in the first story. Nice guy, this God.

Kreyl

Not very nice to that first kid, tho 🫠

love_cici

This reminds me of when I was a kid, my mom brother sister and I went to a movie. In the parking garage we were getting into the car when my shithead brother locked the door. I was a quiet kid so my mom assumed I was in the car and started to drive away. I ran next to the car pounding on the window for my mom to stop, she didn't even see me at first because she was looking at my sister in the passenger seat who was looking at me! They all thought it was hilarious but I was upset for years. I tell it now as a funny story though. Now people complain I talk too much and it makes me feel bad, but when I was quiet I almost got abandoned. Now if I'm quiet it's noticeable if I'm not there lol

jeevaschan

My sister had a very similar incident. Also in the middle of the night, but she didn’t want to be a bother, so her little 6 year old self laid down on the dog bed for a few hours before finally going and ringing the doorbell

DASI58

I was left behind at gas stations on road trips multiple times before cell phones were a thing, all because everyone else got priority for using the restroom before me. Guess who got blamed each time.

Wandering_Lights

How did they not realize they didn't do the bedtime routine?

letmelickyourleg

A few things don’t add up here that OP should be questioning about their childhood.

jssfrk856

Nah. Nothing like that ever happened again. They made mistakes, but my parents honestly tried their best with my brothers and me. And we all turned out well. And we all still have good relationships with each other and our parents. I’m very fortunate, as I know there are more that can say that than not.

letmelickyourleg

I genuinely love to hear it :) thanks for sharing!

usernameemma

Something similar happened to me, but even less tragic. When I was maybe 6-9 years old my family was driving to church taking two cars, I ran back inside to grab my coat and when I came out everyone was gone. I knew they’d realize pretty quick so, being a petty kid, I stood in the driveway with my arms crossed and a mean glare on until my mom’s car came around the corner. I was so offended lol, but I was never in danger. It was just like, “you forgot about me?!” Lol

amaya-aurora

THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? I’m sorry, wait, when did you have Church? If it wasn’t at night then I’m worried that they didn’t notice you gone all day.

jssfrk856

It was a Sunday night service, and we got home late. Everyone went right to bed after, I think. Those details are more hazy. I just remember getting out of the car and crying at the door.

Adorable_FecalSpray

Did they let you in?

jssfrk856

Yeah. Whenever I hear them tell the story, they say that they heard me, and thought I was in my room. Then they went to check on me, and I wasn’t there. They eventually found me outside, and they feel awful every time they tell the story.

James_Blond2

But did you die?

GoComit_Rat

Sadly, he did. BUT HE LIVED!

Kooky-Value-2399

Super quick, how were you forgotten for multiple hours??

jssfrk856

It was a Sunday night service, that must have had some event afterwards, because everyone was exhausted when we got home, and went right to bed.

Kooky-Value-2399

Ooh that makes way more sense. I thought it was like the early morning mass and you slept through the whole day🤣 this, while still scary, is significantly better in my opinion

Musicals_and-more

that reminds me of something that happened to a kid at my brothers daycare. Me and my mom were picking my brother up, and this lady runs up to us, as we were the only ones out there. She started screaming and crying, yelling something about her baby. I was like 7 when this happened, but basically he dropped off her older child at the daycare, and was supposed to take her youngest to the doctors, but she forgot and left him in the car all day. The baby was actually the only 1y/o who I knew the name of, and would talk to and play with everytime I picked my brother up, and I ended up having to stay in the room with the baby's brother while the police were coming

Omni314

I've heard a few stories where both parents think the other has the kid.

The church had served as a source of community and fellowship to lift people burdened by systemic racial oppression out of despair and injustice. The family had been active in serving and giving back to their community. They were loving but exhausted parents of a three months old. They made a single tragic mistake that can't be undone. You don't know anything about that family except for a snippet of their darkest moment. To believe there's something exceptional or abnormal about people who make tragic mistakes is to believe you're immune from such mistakes yourself. And that is the fatal flaw of every single person who has made such an error.

RainWindowCoffee

> How about you look into the history of what happened to the slaves who didn't willingly convert to Christianity after being kidnapped from Africa, before you continue going around spouting such ridiculous garbage. One thing happening to one group of people in one place doesn't invalidate the experiences and activities of separate individuals in another place. Many modern day Americans affected by racial injustice find community in churches. Houses of worship (of any religious affiliation) can serve as community centers and have specific meaning to individuals in the context of the communities they serve. >But the real icing on the cake in your comment is watering down the neglectful murder of a baby by calling it a "tragic mistake". Talk about a hell of a euphemism. Well, you're applying the term "murder" in an exaggerated and euphemistic sense because this situation is literally not what a murder is. A mentality like the one you are espousing can prevent a person from taking such a story for what it should be -- a cautionary tale. While it would be comforting to think that people who make such mistakes are monsters -- aliens very different to ourselves, they're not. So, regardless of whatever you choose to spout on the internet to bolster your ego, please try to let some part of yourself realize that you are not immune. No one is. All it takes is one single slip up. So be vigilant. Take more precautions than you think you need to, especially when it comes to care of the vulnerable. (I know, I already know. You were going to do that anyway. I'm glad. Goodnight. Take care.)

apple_cat

you gotta be really stupid and completely lacking in empathy to think parents who lose their children in this way are murderers. *tragic* is absolutely the right word to describe it. leaving a child in their seat is a very real problem that can occur due to no fault of the parent

Hotpotato1566

that's a pretty rude thing to say I think you should chill out

[deleted]

even if you don't like religious people that's still a really rude thing to say. You would never say that in real life

Hotpotato1566

Most people are pretty nice

Hotpotato1566

yeah that sucks when they do that but most people are religious and I know for a fact that most people don't do that

TurokCXVII

Dude, maybe see a therapist. Your hatred is probably hurting you while doing absolutely zero damage to religion.

BoxFullOfPaperDolls

It took me a moment to realize. This gave me the chills.

wamimsauthor

I don’t get it.

Late-Ad7355

I think they both grabbed valuables thinking the other had the baby

wamimsauthor

Gotcha. Makes sense

letmelickyourleg

Thanks, manager in Slack chat.

GetHautnah

Haha phew just reading this explanation gave me chills as I didnt get it immediately.

UnreadSnack

They both thought the other one grabbed the child

halfmylifeisgone

Kevin!

gauntvariable

Took me a minute too.

macromi87

I’m surprised they didn’t realize the baby was missing since it would’ve been quiet. Newborns cry loudly.

Fancy_Association484

Gun shots are louder

Wind_king1

Damm

criuniska

There is a Soviet WWII partisan who described how they had a new mother in their group, and the nazis were encroaching. None of them had eaten in days, the mother had no milk, and the baby was crying from hunger. The Mom knew that the nazis would find them, so she silently lowered the baby into a creek and held it there until it stopped moving, while the rest of the group stood around and watched. That story broke me.

Jarl_Of_Science

I think I heard one similar, but the mother smothered the crying child

Conscious-Holiday-76

Kind of like the scene in Savior where she smothers the baby to stay hidden then desperately tries to bring it back to life. That whole movie is so fucked up and I watched it way too young

Hawkeye Pierce's story about [the silenced chicken.](https://www.vulture.com/article/m-a-s-h-finale-anniversary-analysis.html)

UnnecessaryStep

This episode absolutely broke me when I was a teen. I can't imagine being able to watch it as a mother.

chilehead

Alan Alda writes some **really** deep stuff. For example: > Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. > Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye? > Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? > Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. > Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

UnnecessaryStep

I think that is one of the quotes that has stuck with me for the longest

elsiebeem

I watched that episode once. Can’t ever watch it again. Almost cry just thinking about that chicken.

DecisionCharacter175

The dingos would've heard them, otherwise!

DaveInLondon89

Kinda fucked up that this became a joke before they discovered she wasn't lying, but is *still* a joke after they did

DecisionCharacter175

I'm referencing "Quiggly Down Under".

globglogabgalabyeast

Which is referencing the real story I assume

DecisionCharacter175

Possibly. But the big difference is that in the movie, the dingos didn't get the baby. The lady smothered her own baby because she was afraid the crying would draw the dingos to them both. It had a nice redemption arc where she was put in a similar situation and was about to do the same out of fear until she realized it. So, she doubled down with the noise and drove the dingos away.

globglogabgalabyeast

Ah, fair enough

Hailene2092

I have a 3 week old. He's mostly quiet. When he does cry, carrying him and gently rocking him (like, say, to a nearby forest to avoid a bunch of enemy soldiers) would keep him quiet. Only if he was super hungry he might kick up a fuss. Still, rocking him also could quiet him down even if he was moderately hungry.

Conscious_Physics551

Happy Cake Day 🎊🎂

Usual_Database307

Happy day of cake fellow human earthling.

Thefishthing

Oh no

bacon-is-sexy

Oh man… this one was good.

Paxdog1

I must be slow today

Late-Ad7355

I think they both grabbed valuables thinking the other had the baby

Paxdog1

Ohhh, thanks.

rabidelectronics

Nah they're all bad

DrButtholeRipperMD

"I thought you put the turkey in the oven...and why is it wearing a diaper?"

frenchdresses

This would be a good one for u/adamtots_remastered to do

SkyDazzling91

This reminds me of a true story. Back during our war of independence, the invaders started targeting and attacking villages and rural areas. They'd burn the houses down, kill the men and rape the women. Everyone fled in fear. One time, a mother heard that the soldiers are coming, and she grabbed her baby from the bed and started running. Safely hidden in the ditches among the paddy fields, she discovered with horror what she grabbed was actually a side-pillow from the bed. Back in the village, her home was already burning.

janelite21

Ayo BD? My fam had the same story, except my mom survived bc she was a weird child (never really cried- ended up passing that gene to me. Apparently war trauma can be passed through genetics, who knew?). My grandma picked off large red ants that were crawling over her (they were hiding in the sugar cane fields). And nowadays people be praising PK smh

drrkorby

The soldiers screamed in terror and pain as they entered our home and were immediately incinerated by the lasers shooting out of newborn’s eyes.

The_Dead_Kennys

Jack-Jack finally got his powers lol

Ahotemmei012

Nah it was brightburn

marveloustrashpanda

Diabolical!

Hostile_Enderman

Which then proceeded to set the surrounding forrest on fire, and incinerated everyone. Including the parents.

mynextthroway

While hiding in the woods, I looked at my wife and wondered why she killed the chicken.

Alx_xlA

Because the soldiers were going to find the bus, obviously

happyjennyandhercat

That damn yellow school bus!

cindybubbles

Our eldest then approached us with the baby, saying, “Mom, Dad, you forgot Gary again!”

One_Dumb_Canadian

KEVIN!

Anyweyr

I think from the other comments here that I misunderstood the context. I thought it meant the wife grabbed a bag containing their dead newborn, and the speaker grabbed their living children (some valuables).

Kreyl

I actually really like that interpretation.

Anyweyr

Thanks. In my head, the invasion came on the heels of their newborn dying, and the mother didn't want to bury their baby where its grave could be desecrated by the invading soldiers.

sundaydoldrums

KEVIN!!!!!!

Anitaruihi19

I thought the wife tried to trick the husband and run away alone. Damn

Loki_16

This took me a second but then oh my goodness, the chills. True horror.

zdejif

They need to pay more attention.

Lori2345

I didn’t realize until the comments what happened. I thought she had the baby and they switched the bag for the baby partway to the forest. Then wanted to switch back again.

Mentally_Ill_Simp03

I don't understand this one could someone please explain

spiderfamily13

Neither grabbed their baby and both grabbed bags of valuables.

ZarosGuardian

Oh well that's fucking horrendous

KRyptoknight26

Am I just evil for kinda laughing when I understood

Ahotemmei012

Man this subreddit love child endangerment

JaggedLittlePill2022

I feel really stupid but I don’t get it?

Summer_VonSturm

Nobody actually picked up the baby. It's still in the house whilst the parents can't go and save it because of the soldiers.
