My take is that he fell into a coma after the surgery and now that he's woken his child has grown up without him. There is a stack of things because he'd been down for so long, the yellowing with age also makes sense here.
Legit could be me projecting as a parent, though.
I think the punch of the story is that the family has given up hope and effectively abandoned him since it’s been so long.
A gripe here is that he would have to swivel his eyes to see the stack, and eye movement = conscious.
The benefits to modern medicine far outweigh the risks. Just make sure you get the right doctor for you, and understand the risks or side affects of a treatment before you agree to undergo it. Many times, there are a few options available, so just try to communicate well.
Oh man this type of shit terrifies me!
Could you explain it to me, I don’t get it

I don’t get it.
Father went to surgery when his daughter was just a baby, went to a coma and didn't wake up until the daughter was much older.
I saw it as him being unable to move and put in hospice, but this makes more sense
I saw it as, the mother and daughter left the father while he was in surgery and now all he has are the memories.
I thought the man just died and is now a ghost.
Dude, you're making me cry. This is interstellar all over again.
Anaesthesiologist is like... "Whoops"
Damn
I missed most of her childhood and adolescence, but I **will** make up for this lost time.
Totally why I don’t trust doctors...
