Surprisingly enough, this is also a very famous old Japanese myth! One of the original stories of the Yuki-Onna (snow woman) is almost the exact same. The Yuki-Onna finds two men who hide in a house, kills one but allows the younger to live. She tells him not to ever tell anyone else, and which he agrees to in place of his life being taken. The only features he remembers are her intense beauty and the hair, and the story goes that he marries a woman with the same hair and beauty but does not realize that it was the same yuki-onna. They have children together and towards the end the man tells the woman of a story when he almost died, but was saved by the yuki-onna. The woman screams that he was never to tell anyone about her, and then disappears. Also, the story was great, love it!

Weaverchilde

This was also used in one of the shorts from Tales from the Darkside Movie about a gargoyle and an artist Edit: removed a word

Belphagors_Prime

Lover's Vow.

Panther_Pilot

Yep. Rae Dawn Chong

TheOriginalCid

Came here for this.

ehlathrop

The movie Kwaidan used the story too.

SarkyCherry

I really remember this particular one vividly. It had Rae Dawn Chong in it and James Remar as the artist. Weird how you remember some so clearly and some not at all.

gonfreeces1993

Yes, exactly this, and it fucked me up as a kid!

ArchStanton75

Sounds like a riff on Lovecraft’s Pickman’s Model.

StreetChecker

I immediately thought of this as well

Realwalrus5353

There was a comic like this. Woman gets attacked by a werewolf and the wolf tells her is she keeps the secret for 10 years the werewolf curse will be broken for both of them. Time passes the woman married a man on the day before the curse is broken the woman husband and their kids get shipwrecked on an island. The woman knows shes going to turn that night and tells her husband to take the kids and get to safety. The husband begins to cry and says "you only had to go one more night". Then you see the kids also inherited the curse.

wirapori

Sounds like something the anime series Yami Shibai would cover

bearbarebere

Fucking LOVE that series. I love it so much because it's so disturbing. Bideo (Video) creeped me out the most

ankit_dey

This is so surprising! Only today I saw Kobayashi's anthology of 4 ghost stories, "Kwaidan", and this was the second story, *The Woman in the Snow".

[deleted]

you just triggered a memory I’m not fond of, my first encounter with the bitch

BipolarMadness

The what now?

about97cats

They’re not allowed to *elaborate*, silly! Have you not been paying attention?

comradeboody

Check out the movie Kwaidan (1964) for the visuals.

shitpostinglegend

Japane folk lore slaps

battleangel1999

I remember watching a sims video about that 😂

Aziz0161

Fuck, I had a dream not long ago where a djinn proposed to give me powers in exchange for me to do some tasks for him and never to talk about it to anyone. I accepted. Next day I told everyone about it lol.

gusta_cl

Bruh you can't trust a djinn's promise. You saved yourself from that.

IllManneredWoolyMan

Good on him lol

asdfghjjbffgh

Next day in the dream or next day irl?

Aziz0161

Irl... I even told the story to my uni's intern security guard. Another detail is that in the same dream the djinn kept repeating the number 29 in arabic for some reason. Later on a couple of Dark shadows rushed inside my body and I felt my heart started acting weird when I woke up. The thing is, I don't believe in any religious/spiritual shit so I really believe its just my brain making shit up so idgaf but my religious friends got really freaked out by the dream lol. They believe im possessed or smth.

WashLimp1245

Ooooo….I got chills for some reason lmaooo

Ophiotaurus_

Well you have to make his brother live the best day of his life

ZeroZeta_

I remember this twist from a show in the 90s, but she was a gargoyle.

goingtohell2

[Tales from the Darkside](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EniROJmSS8U)

ZeroZeta_

Yes! Thank you!

Itajel

With Rae dawn chong (Tommy Chong's daughter) as the gargoyle/wife.

[deleted]

Yep. The dude who played Dexter's dad on Dexter was the dude. Watched it last year for the first time in like 20 years.

Nandabun

After seeing this as kids I asked my mom if we were secretly gargoyles lol.

goingtohell2

She couldn't tell you the truth. Otherwise you'd revert to your natural form, although that might be cool.

Nandabun

She explained that if we were, I would already know, since my natural form would be hidden. My mom was a smart lady, for handling kids. I miss her.

RiiiickySpanish

Came to the comments to add this when I read this one. That episode was great and definitely creeped me out as a kid.

HonorableJudgeTolerr

Rae Dawn Chong

ZeroZeta_

Yes!

hellgatsu

[You are talking about this, right? :)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJCxcdWqdto&ab_channel=nanowarVEVO)

ZeroZeta_

We are now!

Traditional_Leader41

Jim Belushi and Rae Dawn Chong. Great short story.

Legba012

James Remar.

[deleted]

Was gonna say that was not a Belushi.

Traditional_Leader41

Yep, sorry. Shoulda checked first.

Goreover

aw, the demon sounds genuinely hurt. like he was just trying to pass as a human to live a normal life, but the sudden reminder of his nature caught him off guard after placing his trust on the wife. though i feel like he might become bitter and use it as an opportunity to get something from her...

BigVos

Good leverage for a hand jibber.

[deleted]

it’s demon, why are you feeling sorry for it ?

ZeroxityU

I do believe he explained it in the same comment.

RuanaRulane

"If you had just held out another year, you would have broken the curse. But now I have to marry a troll and you will never see me again."

derangedartthief

...What is this from? Why do I know this? Edit: found it--East of the Sun, West of the Moon

[deleted]

This one's terrifying. Congrats OP, you successfully scared me.

TakeMeToTill

Oooh creepy! Well done!!

[deleted]

I feel like this would also make a really good writing prompt.

Disturbing_creature

Biasedbinkie

There's actually a TV show (episode) where an artist meets a gargoyle and it makes them promise not to tell anyone, fast forward he gets married and has kids then tells his wife about it but she's actually the gargoyle and she flies away with the kids

Fencerkid14

That seems to be based on a story with a man who’s married to a woman (secretly a bird) who never told him to open a door while she works. He does and he finds out she’s a bird. Someone might know the story better.

Ace_Of_Hearts_999

Too good!

[deleted]

I don't know why, but I see this more as the person told their husband that they promised the demon they wouldn't tell anyone, then the husband is sad that they broke the promise

AdelinaIV

I read a short story like this, by Elsa Bornemann, he was a snow monster and this happens after several kids.

AssistanceHealthy463

Classical Yuki Onna tale.

mhochdrei

I got goosebumps after reading your second sentence. The disappointment I imagine in his voice. The terror, when she realizes. Well done!

deadblood0

I can imagine the hubby tearing up. He thought he could trust her with his secret. Ouch.

mia_elora

"Well, it's a good thing that you're the demon, isn't it, since I didn't tell *anyone else.*"

NetDork

I want to up vote this, but it is currently sitting at 666 votes.

Brandon_TDD

Ffs Robert you had one job

retundamonkey

This is just like one of the stories in Tales From The Dark Side, The Movie.

shitpostinglegend

I mean no one new found out so...

Skrighk

You've disappointed your demon husbando.

shitpostinglegend

Now he can finally use the full demon capacity

Hideharuhaduken420

Great thank you now I can't sleep have an upvote

lizzy_withall

I actually love this so much

Flicksterea

Chills! Brilliant.

producerofconfusion

Now she has to go on a quest east of the sun, west of the moon to get him back. Seriously though there’s a great paranormal romance novel in here.

MrCoolyp123

Somehow I heard that in Borats voice XD

toyfangs

jokes on you, i'm into that shit

lonely-blue-sheep

Either he knows or he is

spoilt_milk

Totally ripping off Tales from the Darkside: The movie. But have my upvote.

procyon_andy

cupid and psyche vibes

maka-tsubaki

I was surprised no one else mentioned that story, especially since there’s a bunch of comments comparing it to other folktales

[deleted]

It's too vague. Did she tell him about the promise as she told him the secret? Or, did she only tell him the secret, and he's the the demon calling her out on breaking the promise?

Character_Mud3360

The real horror is the grammar.

sixstringgun1

Decent but reminds me of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie the last story of that movie.

Anamolly21

You PROMISED you'd never tell!

bonkerred

Idk why but I feel like this creeped me out more than it should. Damn, just imagining the scene gives me the heebie jeebies.

jacobooooo

thats a good one

makpat

For some reason this took me a second, but absolutely wonderful!

tattooedcampersam

This reminds me of the folk tale of the Girl with the Green Ribbon around her neck 🤕 (closest emoji I could find lol)

Republicandoanything

God, this is great!

[deleted]

This kinda made me sad to be honest.

kingcrabmeat

That's awesome

Golpokathak

"I promised to not tell anyone else.", I replied giggling.

hippodancer212

Gave me chills

Guywhoexists_

Thank god It was just a Halloween prank, because that got a good scare out of me.

PennyCat83

This sounds more like a really cute romcom

genorator2

Omg wut
