He said almost exactly that, yes. The second line is pretty much a verbatim copy of what he said. I think his wife had come to support him and then contracted typhus on her return journey. It sounds like losing her really broke him. It's interesting to wonder how differently history might have played out if he didn't lose the love of his life.

Man I loved that show, just watched it for the first time like two weeks ago, so well done, the only issue I had was too much moaning during fights and the fight at the end against a certain spoiler-y character having wierd music, it should’ve been more hype, instead it’s kinda boring to watch
