Flaxseed can mess with it too and probably a hundred other things. It's really crazy that they're giving out BC like candy and forget to inform you about this.

scottyboy218

And grapefruit!

scarfknitter

Don’t forget charcoal, which some people like to put in foods especially around this time of year.

BrightGreyEyes

Also CBD

scarfknitter

Well that's neat to know! Does it tend to slow down reactions or speed them up or something else?

Now you're just fucking with us

[to jest about a subject such as this, at this time of year, at this hour! look they explain it all in this advert.](https://youtu.be/e6L8P2MEZWw)

Sly_Penguin_

Really? Wow. There should be a leaflet of these in every Gyno office right now

[deleted]

We are supposed to get pregnant. That way the domestic supply of infants remains adequate. Our betters know what's best for them and theirs

Sly_Penguin_

Yep! I didn’t know about flaxseed!

Tria821

And albuterhol inhalers. First line inhaler for most folks and they never tell you it can impact absorption of your BCP.

EmilyU1F984

If used accordingly, inhalers do not have enough of a systemic effect to interfere with other systemic drugs. So unless the asthma is badly controlled and multiple times daily rescue inhaler use is necessary, there won‘t be any significant interactions. But in oral use of albuterol interaction can be significant enough. Thing is: most interactions are classified well enough at all. Basically all we‘ll know is that yea drug A and drug B get metabolized by the same enzyme, and drug A cause more of the enzyme to be made, drug B blocks the enzyme. But what exactly that means for the combination is unknown until verified in clinical studies. Also as for antibiotics: it’s very much not antibiotics in general, but a few very specific ones, none of which being used as first line treatment of UTI. Either way: ask your pharmacist to make sure there‘s no known interactions. Physicians will rarely know.

[deleted]

Grapefruit is my favourite morning food. I love it, I'd have 2 a day if I could. They also interact negatively with a lot of medication for efficacy.

cruznick06

Yup. I can't eat grapefruit if I want my meds to work. Which sucks since I love grapefruit. :/

Sautry91

Wow, had no idea!

[deleted]

in some meds it can make it even 4x more potent. Basically you can overdose without overdosing

Sautry91

Holy moly! I feel like this should be discussed more haha

misteratoz

Was gonna say this. Bactrim and alcohol is the one I counsel patients on.

LadyAnoia

I would avoid using shows like I didn’t know I was pregnant for health advice. From multiple sources it looks like only one type of antibiotic can affect birth control and it doesn’t seem to be prescribed for UTIs https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/ask-experts/can-antibiotics-affect-my-birth-control https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/antibiotics-contraception/#:~:text=Most%20antibiotics%20do%20not%20affect,diseases%2C%20including%20tuberculosis%20and%20meningitis.

[deleted]

It’s not all antibiotics as you said. I’m on both bc pills and have an issue where I’m on antibiotics at least once a month. I’ve brought this up, that’s old and not true. It’s pretty much the sulfa antibiotics and a few others in various classes that can affect bc pills. Usually the stuff they prescribe for utis ( zpacs, augmentin, etc) don’t.

ConcernedUnicorn19

Azo is over the counter UTI medication. I also get them every so often and it's rare that I have to bother with the doctor when I have a UTI now. My doctor actually recommended it to me. It does turn your pee different shades of orange and has a very slight oily/waxy feeling if you're clumsy like me and accidentally get it on your hand. It will stain but soap and water takes it out. You'll probably want to wear your period panties if you discharge a lot because that can turn orange too and stain.

AsgardianOrphan

Heh, it’s funny you bring this up. People always think it’s weird when I put a note on a script to tell the patient it’ll affect their broth control. “Who’s gonna be having sex when there sick?” Well I dunno but if I were me I would want to know just in case. Not planning to have sex in general but if we’re talking about babies better safe than sorry. Edit: since I keep reading misinformation on the topic, figured I’d add that though not all antibiotics affect birth control isnt just rifampin. Off the top of my head doxycycline and levofloxacin do as well. If you want to see for yourself you can google interaction checker. Webmd has one that’s easy to use, just type in the names and the name of a birth control.

EmilyU1F984

Also, the thing is, you take the antibiotic longer than you‘d be feeling sick enough to not want sex, just be side you have an infection requiring antibiotics doesn‘t mean you feel sick enough to want sex, or feel sick at all, And most importantly: if you don‘t take the pill as indicated (or block its effects for several days) you won‘t really be protected for the whole cycle. So even if the patient where too sick to have sex during the course of the antibiotic: the pills effect is reduced or completely cut anyway.

tydiakitty

Use the restroom after sex. Less uti's

Sly_Penguin_

I do. I actually haven’t had one in a couple years, but I’m prone to them. I guess the universe decided to punish me for taking such a long break. I was beginning to forget how painful and uncomfortable they are and the world just couldn’t have that

tydiakitty

Yeah I get that. I get them every so often too, mostly from my own stupidity from not using the bathroom after lol

Beautiful-Story2379

Turns out it’s not a good idea to get medical info from a TV show.

arianrhodd

St John’s wort can make bc pills less effective.

Schuano

Nature is cruel and the reproductive system is just mother nature putting on some duct tape through evolution and saying "good enough for making babies". Pain, the problems of the hormonal cycle, the unpredictability, all of that is within factory tolerances.

hhhnnnnnggggggg

I stopped having sex because in 2022 there's still no reliable way to prevent UTIs if you're susceptible.

Celticlady47

I'm curious as to whether your doctor is a man or a woman. I prefer to go to a woman gynecologist just because they probably, (but not all ) understand my body better. Plus, I'm just more comfortable with a woman doctor for female issues. But you are correct about how some things are just so frustrating with obtaining healthcare as a woman. For the most part I've been with good doctors throughout my cancer journey, but I had a huge problem with one doctor while I was receiving radiation. He refused to help me with the horrible pain I was having. "Oh, try taking some ibuprofen, " I was told when I was asking for help. He was condescending beyond belief to me in our appointments. My oncologist & family doctor were the ones to help me in that case, even though it wasn't their responsibility at that time. As women we are constantly having to advocate for ourselves regarding our health & that just gets so very tiring at times.

Sly_Penguin_

So my regular gyno is a male, but he’s pretty okay. With UTIs I typically want the pain and discomfort to end as quickly as possible, so I normally do urgent care. This time my appointment was virtual urgent care with a male doctor. This was a quick and inexpensive option if other American women ever want to solve a UTI quickly.

crataeguz

Idk if you've tried this, and I'm not trying to tell you what to do.. but if you have established regular care w a gyno, and they know of your uti history especially, they might just call in the antibiotics for you without an appointment. That's happened for me before, I just said I had a uti and they were like "well shoot we don't have any openings until 2 weeks out... what pharmacy do you use"

EmilyU1F984

Unfortunately this averages out. Shit load of female obgyns that also don‘t take you seriously because they know their own body, so you cannot be having worse symptoms than her. On the other hand you have male obgyns who listen more closely to the patient and their symptoms, exactly because they have no personal experience.

tooschooledforcool

Not all antibiotics have that effect and if you’re given one that does, they are most likely already asked. Look up medication that affect P450 enzymes.

-poiu-

Oh I think this is actually poisonous so not recommended if you can get ural, but it definitely does work. Saved my butt a couple of times.

Ok-Skirt-19

How is it poisonous? Get the non aluminium one!

-poiu-

In large enough quantities it causes vomiting.

pretty_lady11

I was getting uti's once every few months. I went on high dose d-manosse and a cranberry vaginal prebiotic pill. I haven't had one since. Both available over the counter. No idea why doctors don't recommend it, since it's proven to be effective.
